Review: Originally released in 1993 and dedicated to the then recently departed Larry Levan, La Ronde and it's sequel La Ronde II represented one of the earliest documentations of Japanese house music, not to mention providing the precursor to the legendary King Street label. There is an undeniable classiness at work across all the tracks, even if they have aged a little. Smooth deep house is the order of the day, with a few distinctive exceptions including Jazzdelic's low-slung downtempo cut "Love Is In Us All" and Toshihiko Mori's relaxed breakbeat jam "Jungle Fever". For some high grade vocal action head for Khison's sublime "Why Must We Be This Way".

Review: Back in 1991, Hisa Ishioka joined forces with New York's King Street Sounds to launch BPM Records, a label largely dedicated to exploring the potential of Japanese deep house. The label's first release was La Ronde, an expansive double-pack containing material from some of the Japanese scene's brightest lights, and a smattering of US producers (most notably Pal Joey, whose dreamy and melodious "Harmony" remains a highlight). Here the package gets a timely reissue, allowing a new generation of house heads to bask in the spine-tingling beauty of killer cuts from Soichi Terada (alongside an impressive cast-list of collaborators), Toshihki Mori (the new Jersey-influenced loveliness of "Cold Sweat") and Men From The East (the brilliant "Midnight Cowboy", which predictably samples John Barry's harmonica-laden theme from the film of the same name).

Review: Releases on the Ilian Tape label are nearly always two things - a) shrouded in mystery, and b) a little unconventional. Given that the painter who created the artwork gets a credit on the 12"s label but the musician or musicians themselves get no mention, it's fair to assume a) has been fulfilled. The music itself fulfils b) too, as hard edged rhythms clocking in closer to electro than techno provide a vehicle much softer, more sensitive musical flourishes. 'WantU' is probably the overall highlight, with its crystal clear arp riffing and Kraftwerk-esque bumping, but 'Chiemgau606', the rawer 'OSC' and 'Sinister808' should all appeal to those who like their grooves esoteric and full of personality - but ultimately still dancefloor slaying.
