Review: Simply Red's Love & The Russian Winter is one of many great modern soul albums from the flame-haired Mancunian and one that really captures his band's signature blend of soul, pop and jazz styles. Released originally back in 1999, the album is now a full quarter of a century old and features smooth melodies and rich instrumentation with Mick Hucknall's emotive vocals shining throughout. Tracks like 'The World and You Tonight' and 'Love Is a Long Road' highlight the group's ability to weave heartfelt lyrics with infectious grooves while the lush arrangements and sophisticated production create a warm atmosphere which makes it perfect for both relaxed listening and intimate gatherings. Overall, this one still sounds great and is a great testament to Simply Red's enduring appeal.

Review: Originally released in 1984, Powerslave would serve as the fifth full-length from homegrown metal giants Iron Maiden and is often considered to be the project that finally catapulted the band to mega stardom. Filling out larger arenas than ever before, the World Slavery Tour undertaken in support has gone on to become well known as the band's longest and most arduous jaunt across the globe. Boasting some of their most iconic hits such as '2 Minutes to Midnight' and 'Aces High', as well as the fan (and band) favourite musical re-telling of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner', the project is also notable for being the first Iron Maiden album at that time to consist of the exact same line up as its predecessor (1983's Piece Of Mind) while this stable would stay in place for both 1986's Somewhere In Time and 1988's Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.

Review: With the tragic, untimely passing of lead vocalist Chester Bennington in 2017, it naturally appeared to be the end for nu-metal/alt rock juggernauts Linkin Park, until recently shocking their fans with the confirmed news that Dead Sara vocalist Emily Armstrong would be taking Bennington's place, while new drummer Colin Brittain would step in to replace Rob Bourdain who decided not to join the reformation. Serving as the follow up to 2017's pop focused One More Light, the band's upcoming eight full-length LP From Zero takes its title from their original early day name Xero whilst highlighting this newly defined creative origin the members have found themselves cornered into, bearing clear signs of a desire to celebrate their nu-metal beginnings without undoing the decades worth of progression they have accomplished since. With 11 tracks and just over a half-hour runtime, it's evident the project appears to be prioritising brevity and a succinct introduction to this new era without losing site of what sonically drew their legions of fans to them in the first place. It's a brave, delicate time for Linkin Park with From Zero championed as the heralding of this new chapter, aiming to hopefully bridge and appease listeners from all spectrums of their back catalogue.

Review: Say what you will about Green Day's career resurgence record but 2004's American Idiot slaps far more than any hater will have you remember. While many still bemoan the band's shying away from the slacker college rock of 2000's Warning, it's impossible to deny the massive staying power that came from the ludicrous hit singles of the title-track as well as 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams', 'Holiday' and even the nine minute opus 'Jesus Of Suburbia'. Leaning further into concept and theatricality than ever before while essentially serving as the torch bearer album that saw Green Day be passed from Generation X to the millennials of the 21st century, it's easy to understand why American Idiot has become a victim of its own success in the two decades since release, but that doesn't excuse the selective amnesia for how potent of a record it truly was upon arrival and just how prevalent Green Day became in the cultural rock music zeitgeist for an entirely new generation of anxious kids. This 20th anniversary expanded edition arrives in a 4xCD box set complete with a bonus 2xBlu-ray.

Review: The Sisters Of Mercy's enduring album Floodland presents an 80s throwback; this was a time in which many bands were experimenting with gothic and shadowy musical and visual themes, and the Sisters were no exception, having been progenitors of this trend in their native Leeds since as early on as 1980, only shortly after the term "gothic rock" was coined. Floodland followed a much-mythologised tour fallout in June 1985, after which the band effectively split up; dusting themselves off, and/or rising from resurrective Transylvanian mists, they soon returned with Floodland in 1987, albeit with a revised lineup. Still aided by the trusty Doktor Avalanche, lead brain Eldritch would this time hire former Gun Club and Fur Bible bassist Patricia Morrison for performance duties; packing the hit singles 'This Corrosion', 'Dominion' and 'Lucretia My Reflection', this is a caliginous cascade of doomy sound, tempered by both lonely moments of piano catalepsy and high moments of hellish hysteria.

Review: Some 19 years later (and not a moment too soon) this great compilation from Nu Metal legends Deftones is seeing its much-needed repress - with an added remastering to sweeten the deal. A tough record to find at a stomachable price for a while, 'B Sides & Rarities' is full of acoustic versions, demos and covers of the likes of The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, The Cure and - most amusingly - Sade. 'Wax and Wane' is a severely underrated cover, a wicked interpretation filled with punchy guitars and, of course, Chino Moreno's mastery of blending metal and new wave vocals. The most popular of the tracks on offer here is, without doubt, 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want', their cover of The Smiths' 1984 B-side to 'William It Was Really Nothing' . It's a rollercoaster of a cover, with a wild guitar solo and filled with the same rumbling, underlying sadness that made the original such a staple. Who doesn't love a melancholic metal song?

Review: Originally released in 2014 and now celebrating its ten year anniversary, The Hunting Party served as the sixth full-length from nu-metal turned alt rock heavyweights Linkin Park. Marking their first full-length since 2003's Meteora to not be produced by the iconic Rick Rubin (with members Mike Shinoda and Brad Delson opting to handle production duties inhouse), the material bore a notable turn from their more accessible electronic-tinged U2-esque stadium rock and saw a rediscovery and embracing of their more aggressive nu-metal roots. Certified platinum and praised for their ability to still replicate their feral early days, the album is also noted for being the band's first LP to feature guest musicians such as Page Hamilton of Helmet, Daron Malakian of System of a Down, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, and hip-hop artist Rakim. Review: It's difficult to describe to those too young to have been there and to those too old to give a toss, just how rife the anticipation was for the sophomore full-length from nu-metal giants Linkin Park following on from the global success of their multi-platinum selling debut album Hybrid Theory in 2000. Following what felt like an eternal three years, both shortened and lengthened by the bloated remix album Reanimation, 2003's Meteora was nothing short of lightning striking in the same place twice. Debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200, certified 8xPlatinium and currently ranked as the 8th highest selling album of the 21st century, to call the band's second album a success seems like a very muted understatement when anthems such as 'Somewhere I Belong', 'Faint', and, 'Numb' are still some of the highest charting and most world-renowned metal singles to ever blare out across the airwaves. While musically drifting further away from their nu-metal beginnings with each subsequent project, both Meteora and its predecessor belong to a subset of genre-defining classics that appear to become more embraced and less maligned with age, as the nu-metal subgenre becomes less of a dirty word. It also goes without saying that the incomparable vocal presence of late frontman Chester Bennington as well as his vulnerable and cathartic lyricism take on a far more bleak and oppressive shade with the folly of hindsight.
