Review: Originally released in 1974 and now reissued on vinyl, this album transformed the legendary Byrd's career direction. After years as a hard bop heavyweight and collaborator with the likes of Art Blakey, Coltrane and Herbie Hancock, Byrd found commercial and creative renewal through his partnership with producers Larry and Fonce Mizell. The third album in their five-record run on Blue Note, this pushed their progressive sound to deeper, darker territory, riding a funkier, more introspective current than his previous albums. The title track remains a defining work, its hypnotic groove and haunting optimism making it a favorite of future hip-hop artists like J Dilla and A Tribe Called Quest. Byrd's trumpet glides with elegant restraint, weaving through Chuck Rainey's basslines and Gary Bartz's saxophone work. Mizell's signature synthesiser textures add a lush and cosmic layer. Review: Born in New York and raised in San Francisco, Eddie Henderson came up in rarefied company, his parents having been friends with Miles Davis; nothing felt accidental about the fact that he would go on to study at the San Francisco Conservatory, even though he was able to juggle this with a life outside of music too, near concurrently earning medical degree from Howard. But it was in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band that his singular path through jazz really gun-started: by '76, Henderson had emerged as a sharp jazz-funk infused voice, cutting Heritage, his is second album as leader for Blue Note, with producer Skip Drinkwater and a band stacked with heavy improvisers. As heard better than ever on this signature Blue Note via Kevin Gray remaster, the driven stutters of 'Acuphuncture' and the murky slakes of 'Dark Shadow' sure do lock in a grand sense of cosmic unease.

Review: American saxophonist Joshua Redman returns with a new quartet featuring pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Nazir Ebo i a group formed during touring dates following his previous Blue Note debut. The eight new compositions were written during the pandemic and reflect a more subdued register, with pieces often built around modal phrasing and pared-back forms. 'A Message to Unsend' and 'So It Goes' open the set with slow, measured arrangements that favour tone over speed. 'Words Fall Short' and 'Borrowed Eyes' continue in that vein, trading solo space across saxophone and piano without crowding the frame. 'Icarus' introduces more movement and sharper shifts, while 'Over the Jelly-Green Sky' pushes into freer rhythmic interplay without abandoning the central theme. Review: Bashed out in no time at all, Andrew Hill's Andrew!!! drew on an astonishing creative upsurge enjoyed by many a musician in the early 1960s, which proved fortuitous for the pianist's storied early-career Blue Note run. Captured in 1964 with a distinctive quintet including John Gilmore, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis, and Joe Chambers, this de facto debut showcases Hill's singular compositional voice across six dense, exploratory originals like 'The Griots' and 'Black Monday'; while his earlier Point Of Departure tends to attract the spotlight, Andrew!!! colours between the lines in a different shade. But like the former, it no less now benefits from BN's Joe Harley's audiophiliac oversight, preserving the subtle textures and telepathic interplay that define Hill's gauche-adroit playing.

Review: An album that stands as one of American jazz pianist Silver's last great albums for Blue Note. Recorded in early 1968 with two mostly different quintets, the album features trumpeter Charles Tolliver, alternating tenor saxophonists Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, bassists Bob Cranshaw and John Williams and drummers Mickey Roker and Billy Cobham. Silver's rhythmic, economical piano style is often described as funky and nowhere is this more evident than on the album's standout opener, 'Psychedelic Sally'. With its jubilant horn theme and funky Memphis soul-inspired bass riff, the track is a rollicking seven-minute classic that blends 60s funk with 50s bop. The rest of the album maintains a playful spirit. 'Rain Dance' presents a campy, American Indian-style theme, while 'Jungle Juice' offers an exotic, tribal flavour. The warm, loose-swinging title track, 'Serenade to a Soul Sister' and the ethereal 'Kindred Spirits' add depth to the set. The album closes with the gentle piano trio ballad 'Next Time I Fall in Love'. While the first half of the album leans into a bluesy, funky vibe with Turrentine's soulful saxophone, the latter half shifts to a more boppish feel with Maupin, is a different but equally engaging dynamic. Through it all, Silver's philosophy of keeping politics and anger out of his music shines, delivering a joyous and tightly performed soul-jazz classic.

Laid down in a single session at the PJ studio, Groovin' Blue is a timeless and idiosyncratic experiment in jazz, its specialty being tss-tss rhythms, unhindered lead instrumental melisma, sax counterpoint, and smackout drum fills and solos from Butler, which more than transcended the strictures of the swing form of the time.
