Les Sylphides/Love For Three Oranges
Review: Arthur Fiedler's long tenure with the Boston Pops produced a vast archive of recordings, many leaning into fan-serving territory, but this collection proves the orchestra's range extended far beyond light classical fare. Here, Prokofiev's 'Three Oranges Suite' gets a full wax treatment, moving well beyond its often-isolated 'March' into the suite's other vivid vignettes. The rearrangement of 'Les Sylphides' tiptoes between charm and kitsch, while Liszt's symphonic poems receive unexpectedly muscular renderings. 'Mazeppa' bursts with theatric flair, while 'Les Preludes' is approached with drive and precision, opposing overcooked symbolism. Fiedler's flair for drama never came at the expense of control, and this set captures a conductor who bridged populism and classical heft with confidence.

You Got It In Your Soulness
The Generation Gap
Review: One of soul jazz's most electrifying live recordings and a spontaneous triumph born from an unrehearsed, last-minute collaboration at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival. Pianist and vocalist Les McCann, alongside tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Baileyiwho had never played together beforeideliver an exuberant, groove-heavy set that captures the raw energy of the moment. Despite the lack of preparation, the chemistry between the musicians is undeniable and the resulting performance remains one of the most talked-about live jazz recordings. The set opens with 'Compared to What', McCann's politically charged anthem railing against Nixon and the Vietnam War, propelled by a relentless groove and impassioned vocals. The band locks into a deep pocket, with Harris and Bailey trading fiery, blues-inflected solos. 'Cold Duck Time' follows with an irresistible bounce, its bluesy vamp providing the perfect backdrop for extended improvisation. The mood shifts with 'Kathleen's Theme', where Harris takes center stage, exploring the melody with fluid grace before 'You Got It in Your Soulness' brings the session back to its gospel-infused roots, McCann's percussive piano stabs and Donald Dean's driving beat igniting the crowd. Decades later, Swiss Movement still exudes an infectious, unfiltered joyiproof that great jazz can thrive in the most unplanned circumstances. It's a high-spirited, deeply soulful document of musicians seizing the moment with dazzling results.

Review: John Coltrane's exploration of modal jazz shines through in this energetic and thought-provoking performance. Opening with 'Naima,' the track takes an introspective yet powerful approach, allowing us to see Coltrane's unique ability to blend intricate melodic lines with a deep sense of emotional expression. The rhythm section, led by Elvin Jones on drums, locks in with Coltrane's saxophone, creating a sense of tension and release throughout the album. Tracks like 'Cousin Mary' introduce a playful, upbeat energy, offering a contrast to the more meditative moments. This release is a testament to Coltrane's ability to push the boundaries of jazz while maintaining an innate emotional depth.

Review: It has been a full half a century since legendary Brazilian outfit Azymuth made their debut and their new album, Marca Passo, reaffirms their place as legends of jazz-funk. It was recorded in Rio and produced by Daniel Maunick and is the group's first album since drummer Ivan "Mamao" Conti's passing, with bassist Alex Malheiros now the sole founding member. He's joined by Kiko Continentino and new drummer Renato Massa to continue Azymuth's tradition of blending samba soul, funk and cosmic jazz. Highlights include a tribute to Conti, 'Samba Pro Mamao,' and a refreshed take on 'Last Summer In Rio.' The album is a vital, heartfelt continuation of Azymuth's enduring legacy.

Review: By 1973, Soul Media, formed in Tokyo by saxophonist Jiro Inagaki, had spent a good many years blurring the lines of jazz and rock, of course in what we Westerners would interpret as distinctive "J import" style. With In the Groove, their studio output took a decisive leap, injecting a tighter funk sensibility into an already well oiled jazz membrane. Refusing to mimic the overseas jazz-funk scene, Inagaki and his band offered their own take: confident, dynamic and layered with a distinctly Japanese stance on groove and arrangement. The Crusaders' influence looms large, where Inagaki was closely following their evolution. But this isn't aphonic pastiche; the record finds its own voice in its interplays of brass and rhythm, with 'That's How I Feel' causing a slow trickle then downpour of funktastic piano-funk flections to come, such as 'Joie De Vivre', 'Papa Hooper's Barrel House Groove' and the brilliantly corvine 'Raven Speaks'.

Review: Now reissued through Hostile City, Will Wood's 2015 debut under the Tapeworms name lurches across extremes with messy, psychotheatrical glee. Everything Is A Lot indeed, and you can say that again. Through cabaret-punk, piano bar balladry and bedroom noise experiments, Wood's abrupt tonal shifts mirror the volatility of early adulthood, coming as a bratty, jarring absurdist masterpiece, and an unlikely initiation into the rarely contiguous world of avant-garde freak folk and comedy. And yet its honky-tonk piano and sharp squeezebox left turns reveal a fondness for the grotesque, signalling the restlessly shapeshifting career to come.

Review: Ben LaMar Gay expands his musical lexicon with mala-morphemic glee on Yowzers, a wide-berthing new LP trading in exp points racked up as a soloist, bandleader, and key player in Chicago's music scene. Conscripting his long-running quartet (Tommaso Moretti, Matthew Davis, Will Faber) for dispatch on a new instrumental regiment, the record snaps the intimate language they've developed through years of live performance, captured here in a rare set of real-time recordings. As always, Gay pushes outward from folkloric roots, incorporating choir arrangements, in-studio experimentation, and contributions from frequent collaborators like Rob Frye and Ayanna Woods, be that through the looped minimalism of 'Yowzers' to the mournful swing of 'For Breezy' and the guttural blues of 'John, John Henry.'

Review: Virginia's legendary Afro-jazz ensemble Oneness of Juju return with their first international release in over three decades, a multigenerational work of spiritual jazz, spoken word, and funked-out ritualism. Made Through Ritual sees founder James "Plunky" Branch collaborating with his son Jamiah "Fire" Branch and producer Jamal Gray, son of Black Fire Records' late co-founder Jimmy Gray. Built from demo beats and samples, each track is reinterpreted by live musicians, fusing sequencing and improvisation into something rich with intent. 'Share This Love' opens with Chyp Green's mantra-like vocals, while 'Free Spirit' and 'Broad Street Strut' blend groove with cosmic vision. 'Children of the Drum' closes things with Roscoe Burnem's resonant poetryian ode to Black legacy that roots the entire record in ancestral memory. This is an album not just made, but summoned, a vibrant continuation of the sonic revolution Plunky began in the 70s.

Review: Boston-based drummer and producer Terri Lyne Carrington reconvenes Max Roach's 1961 landmark with a sharp eye on both lineage and forward motion. Originally conceived as a civil rights-era protest suite, the project blends jazz, voice, and African-diasporic rhythm to address racial justice with clarity and force. This reinterpretation is not a soft tribute - it's a generational handover. Christie Dashiell takes on Abbey Lincoln's vocal role with arresting precision, while the ensemble (including Morgan Guerin, Matthew Stevens and Milena Casado) brings freshness without losing tension. Julian Priester, the sole surviving member of the original lineup, offers a subtle but weighty cameo. Tracks like 'Driva' Man' and 'Triptych' are stretched into wider shapes, drawing on funk, gospel and Afro-Latin idioms without softening the message. As Carrington puts it, this isn't just homage - it's a new freedom suite for now. The message, more than 60 years later, still burns brightly.

Review: In the 70s, Hiromasa Suzuki's synthfluence knew few bounds. A key architect of 70s jazz, the keyboardist's seventh LP High Flying heard him heighten his parabola, enlisting a killer ensemble including Jiro Inagaki, Jun Fukamachi, Shuichi Murakami and Kayoko Ishu to produce a dense cyclorama of cosmic funk and jazz fusion. Suzuki's arrangements are restless and daring, with opener 'High Flying' leading the way through pearly angelics and attention-grabbing title sequence vocals, before clincher bodyworkers like 'Screwdriver', 'Smash' and 'Out Of Focus' pitch heady reprogrammable synth patches against fiery rhythm sections. Having then already shaped defining moments for Terumasa Hino and Akira Ishikawa, Suzuki here pushed even further. Pressed and printed in Japan, and with due respect to original intent, no digital release planned.

Review: Released without a hint of fanfare first time round in 2021, this deeply intimate collaboration between Ukrainian vocalist Yana Pavlova and Berlin-based producer Pavel Milyakov continues to command attention, almost of its own accord. Built out of minimal guitar patterns, submerged dub-influenced bass and spectral saxophone contributions from Alex Zhang Hungtai, the LP unfolds through a mix of improv and aleatory algo-synthesis, where rather than smoothing over imperfections, the artists lean into them; mic rustle, background clicks and ambient irregularities all inform on its dark jazzy, trancelike post-humanoid atmos.

Review: At just 21, Lee Morgan was already a seasoned presence in jazz when he cut Here's Lee Morgan for Vee-Jay Records in early 1960. Joined by an impeccable quintet - tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Art Blakey on drums - the session shutters a fiery sonic snapshot of hard bop at its finest; and though the personnel lineup reads like a one-off, the interplay mirrors the energy and cohesion of a classic Jazz Messengers date. Morgan, fresh off stints with Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie, channels the melodic clarity of Clifford Brown while pushing toward his own more assertive voice. The album stands as a sharp document of a young artist already in command of his instrument, and of a group who, even outside their usual configurations, deliver a set swinging with power, raunch and finesse.

Review: Recorded in November 1959, this classic American hard bop session finds the young artist already forging a distinctive voice on the tenor. Backed by an all-star cast with trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, the album captures a moment of transition for Shorter, just as he was beginning his tenure with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The tenor saxophonist's first session as a leader, stands as a confident and engaging debut that hints at the genius to come. The six-track set is dominated by Shorter's originals, five in total, with the lone standard being a spirited and swinging take on 'Mack the Knife'. 'Down in the Depths' is the longest cut and is known for its moody development and dynamic solos, while Cobb's drumming is tasteful, commanding and endlessly musical. The rhythm section, then part of Miles Davis' working group, provides a locked-in yet supple foundation for the fiery frontline. A compelling portrait of a rising saxophonist surrounded by top-tier talent, delivering spirited and technically assured hard bop and a formative chapter in one of jazz's most iconic careers.

Review: Makanda Ken McIntyre's debut is a heady, off-kilter joy: angular but lyrical, warm but structurally daring, full of left turns and sly tonal shifts. The Boston-born reedist recorded it in 1960 at Van Gelder Studio alongside fellow alto saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy i an inspired pairing, given their shared fondness for flutes, extended harmony and unusual form. Released the following year, it's a document of two singular voices meeting in a moment of creative alignment. There's fire and freedom here, but also poise: 'Lautir' is both jagged and dance-like, 'Head Shakin'' lurches between hypnotic vamp and free-swinging release, while the ballad 'Dianna' quietly aches. McIntyre's originals hold their own next to the Gershwins' 'They All Laughed', which gets a cheeky, bop-leaning spin. Walter Bishop Jr. brings a clear-headed lightness on piano, Sam Jones is solid and swinging on bass, and Art Taylor's drumming balances control and fluidity, anchoring the group without ever damping their spark. At just over 44 minutes, the whole thing feels like a conversation in motion i thoughtful but unresolved, expressive but never showy. Still one of the sharpest and most compelling debuts of its era.

Review: British jazz producer Daylight Robbery gives us a run for our marooned money on Third Island Suite, a warped blend of mysticism and rhythm manifesting as a genre-sidestepping second album. Somewhere between modal jazz, 70s fusion and smoked-out hip-hop loops, it comes as a nod to John Fowles' tricksy novel The Magus, filtering metaphysical riddles through keys, drums and tape-saturated grit. Recorded with NYC pianist Nick Marks, the record dials up the moodier atmospheres that simmered on prior outing Moons Of Jupiter, swapping outer space for inner puzzles. Cologne artist Jens Roth supplies the dreamlike sleeve art, hinting at the record's shifting, illusory core.

Review: Agharta snares Miles Davis and his electric septet in full volcanic mode, recorded live at Osaka Festival Hall during a 1975 afternoon set. Sonny Fortune, Michael Henderson, Al Foster, James Mtume, Reggie Lucas and the incendiary Pete Cosey conspire with Davis to pour molten funk, noise and free improvisation into a dense, swirling suite moulded across four untitled sections. Davis barely leads; rather, the ensemble pushes forward through locked, polyrhythmic surges, Cosey's snarling guitar and FX rig driving much of the intensity. Teo Macero oversaw the recording, though here there's little of his trademark splicing; the chaos is left intact. Though once derided, Agharta is now rightly recognised as the hellish high watermark of electric jazz that it is. This 50th anniversary edition is limited to 2000 copies on translucent blue vinyl.

Review: With a new remaster, Souma dive deeper into the golden-era archives of Lebanese and record label Voix De L'Orient with a rare 7" cut from Beirut's very own Georgette Sayegh and Melhem Barakat. 'Belghi Kull Mawaidi' hears Sayegh's velvet-soft voice phrased with Barakat's bold, theatrical delivery, conferring a melancholic duet about cancelling plans for love. First released in the 70s, it remains one of Sayegh's defining moments, a singer whose early obsession with vinyl shaped her distinct style: part chanson, part Levantine lullaby. Tracks such as this eventually led to her subsidy by the Rahbani dynasty and to perform works penned by Ziad Rahbani. On the flip, a stereo instrumental version lets the strings and brass do the heavy lifting, sweeping through the melody with drama and restraint.

Review: Different Rooms finds its footing in the blurs between studio process and improvisation; lived space and constructed sound. Made across late 2024 and early 2025, it hears LA-London-Hamburgers Jeremiah Chu and Marta Sofia Honer fold field recordings, granular textures, and multi-layered viola sessions into a viscous yet meticulous shape. Core material stemmed from real-time editing and in-studio performances, interwoven with improvisations recorded back in 2023 alongside Jeff Parker and Josh Johnson. Compared to the outward gaze of their debut, Recordings From The Aland Islands, this second one turns inward, coming rooted in urban soundscapes: train stations, streets, domestic interiors.

Review: First we had Lola Young with 'Messy', and now we've Laufey with 'Silver Lining'. It seems that, in 2025, relationships gone sour are the main source of inspiration! Here the Icelandic singer-songwriter leans back into music hall jazz, swerving and dodging bullets through "go to hells" and other gotcha moments in the lyrics. But vindictiveness isn't the main meal, as Laufey also considers this moment paramount for self-reflection, contrasting her otherwise ruelessly resplendent Vingolf full-length, A Night At The Symphony: "this time, I was interested in seeing how I could draw out the most flawed parts of myself and look at them directly in the mirror."

Review: The enduring electronic musical gene sequence that was Virginia-born pianist and keys player Lonnie Liston Smith's spiritual funk-jazz opus, 'Expansions' from 1974, now hears another re-disco-scription by keyboardist Gail Johnson and her unstoppable band, Jazz In Pink. Renowned for her keytar uplifts and relentless live schedule, this is a rare 12" for the modern genius LA live musician. Her rendition of Smith's 'Expansions' both mellows and sharpens the mood in equal measure, providing a renewed euphony come euphoria. 'Glow' backs up the B-side with a sheeny original, with dramatic phrase stops and trademark peak-out pianos from Gail.

Review: Comprised of saxophonist Sami Pekkola, double bassist Eero Tikkanen, electric guitarist Topias Tiheasalo and drummer Veeti Hietala, a young talent steeped in the country's experimental tradition, Phardah are a fresh yet seasoned ensemble from Finland who merge free azz with a psychedelic edge. Their debut release captures the energy of their raw, collective musicianship. Recorded by Teemu Markkula of Death Hawks, the band channels an expansive and free-spirited sound that swings between intense improvisation and nuanced composition. From the opening moments, the tracks allow the music to breathe, and the group explores vast sonic landscapes, where Tiheasalo's intricate guitar work steers the flow, aided by the groovy, pulsing rhythm section. The material showcases Phardah's signature balance of abstraction and clarity. The music flows with organic ease, moving from frenetic bursts to meditative grooves. Side B in particular elevates this fluidity, as the band captures an otherworldly energy, blending improvisational chaos with deliberate structure. Markkula's mix enhances the sense of vast space in the recordings, allowing each instrument to be fully heard while maintaining the group's united, bold sound. Phardah's live energy, first ignited at the 2023 Odysseus Festival, is palpable, and their sound resonates deeply with the spirit of Free Jazz, evoking both a sense of chaos and catharsis. Their debut serves as a striking introduction to a band that thrives in the moment and pushes musical boundaries.

Review: He's played with everyone from Bowie, Lou Reed and Lennon - just the tip of a truly humungous session work iceberg - as well as his longstanding service with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, but Tony Levin's more than capable of whipping up a musical storm without any celebrity help. This is the bassist's latest solo affair, released in September 2024 and, together with a lengthy list of collaborators - among them KC guitarist Robert Fripp - it bends jazz, funk, rock and experimental soundscapery into numerous new shapes. 'Give The Cello Some' is a delight, answering the question "what kind of music would ZZ Top make if they were fronted by Captain Beefheart?" 'Road Dogs' kicks off half metal riffing, half Krautrock linear grooving before hitting a prog/jazz interface and 'Beyond The Bass Clef' is a serene, beatless, almost classical piece. Full of surprises, this is the sound of a master of the bass game following no-one else's lead for a change - and loving every moment.

Review: "Every day" is a noble ambition to uphold for any budding jazzor. On his eighth LP, Takuya Kuroda exalts the principle of tireless dedication to the craft by way of dedicating just a little bit of time to it every day. 10,000 hours is the ideal, but we wonder how many hours Kuruda has checked off? Front covered by a depiction of the Kobe artist bent tongue-extended over his next batch of sheet music, the record attests to the ingenuity and import of genre-fluid jazz. On the stylistic front, the now Brooklyn-based trumpeter continues the trajectory set by his earlier Midnight Crisp, leaning further into hip-hop beats, neo-soul textures, and electronic layers, though the formative jazz sensibility is not lost, having been shaped by nearly three proud decades of dedicated commitment to the craft.

Review: Exploring life and love's angsts, Icelandic singer Laufey (Laufey Lin Bing Jonsdottir) presents A Matter Of Time, revealing a more confrontational lyrical side to her character, one stirred by a recent turbulent relationship. Headed up by the singles 'Silver Lining' and 'Tough Luck', Laufey straddles moods of wanness and last-laugh lyricism, edging her way through a romantic afterglow via tunnelling fusions of classical and jazz. Co-production by Spencer Stewart and Aaron Dessner, known for their work with Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, stretches out Laufey's sound: in her words, "people expect a pretty facade of girly clothes, fantastical stories and romantic music," but only half of this has been delivered on, the other half shorn in favour of realer storytelling.

Review: We Release Jazz proudly purr-loins Hiroshi Suzuki's jazz-fusion-funk gem Cat, first recorded in 1975 and released in 76. With liner notes by Edo jazz critic Teruo Isono, the scene is painted in vivid detail: after moving to LV in 1971 to record with Buddy Rich, Suzuki returned to Japan for a two-day session at Nippon Columbia. What he'd learned from Rich stuck to him like sticky viscidia, resulting in a smooth cross-pollination, spotlighting Suzuki's trombone and Takeru Muraoka's saxophone: this tomcat's territory had been assuredly marked. A prized find among jazz collectors and lofi beat remakers alike, Cat sits alongside Ryo Fukui's Scenery as a supernovaic classic of Japanese jazz.

Review: Bashed out in no time at all, Andrew Hill's Andrew!!! drew on an astonishing creative upsurge enjoyed by many a musician in the early 1960s, which proved fortuitous for the pianist's storied early-career Blue Note run. Captured in 1964 with a distinctive quintet including John Gilmore, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis, and Joe Chambers, this de facto debut showcases Hill's singular compositional voice across six dense, exploratory originals like 'The Griots' and 'Black Monday'; while his earlier Point Of Departure tends to attract the spotlight, Andrew!!! colours between the lines in a different shade. But like the former, it no less now benefits from BN's Joe Harley's audiophiliac oversight, preserving the subtle textures and telepathic interplay that define Hill's gauche-adroit playing.

Review: A new compilation from Spiritual Jazz shows the genre's predisposition to thrive despite heavy political oppression, with underworld eminents euphonating their radical music despite a hard immuring behind the Iron Curtain, which represented the gash between East and West during the Cold War. Contemporary jazz and European folk collide on the first of a two-parter record here, reflecting muted but reassuring sonic utterances sounding against oppression, a somewhat unspeakable sentiment whipping across the Eastern Bloc of the 50s and 60s. Vagif Mustafa Zade, an Azerbaijani pianist, and the Manfred Ludwig Sextett, from the same era, are only two such featured artists; they helped push the embrace hard bop and modal, and the boundaries of what was permissible under the regime.

The third instalment in Incense Music's Music For Dining Room series, it comes as yet another selection curated by Tohru Hashimoto and mastered by Calm. Review: The final album from Tokyo's Soul Media marks a shift from 70s jazz-rock towards something richer, more refined i less about force, more about feel. Jiro Inagaki's soundworld here is open-ended but precise, framed by Norio Maeda's meticulous arrangements and a studio band that breathes through every turn. 'Memory Lane' is as mellow as its name implies, full of soft brass swells and swirling keys that hint at nostalgia without sinking into it. 'I Will Give You Samba' offers contrast i sharp-edged, quick-stepping and filled with rhythmic crosscurrents, while 'Take My Hand' struts with effortless cool, its groove compact but expressive. The palette is wide, from ballads like 'Dried Flowers' to the cinematic sweep of 'Double Images', all held together by a sense of elegant restraint. Everything is placed just so i from Eri Ohno's gliding vocals to Tadayuki Harada's moody baritone i but nothing feels stiff. This isn't fusion in the usual sense: it's more like the closing of one chapter, the opening of another, and a deliberate nod to a musical future Inagaki seemed to sense coming. Still a vivid listen today, it's far more than just a footnote in Japanese jazz history.

Review: A standout in Rahsaan Roland Kirk's early recordings rep, We Free Kings (1962) snaps the young multi-instrumentalist from Columbus, Ohio in sharp and fitted suited form, striking a confident balance between bop-rooted sophistication and latent warm expression. The album has two rhythm sections - Hank Jones and Wendell Marshall on one, Richard Wyands and Art Davis on the other - with Charlie Persip anchoring on drums throughout. While the majority evidences Kirk's prowess as composer and arranger, his interpretation of Charlie Parker's 'Blues for Alice' curves the ball with a fierce, swinging homage; clearly, there's no peace for this mouthpiece. Part of Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series, this one comes again with all-analog remastering from the original tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl and housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Review: Boston-born baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff was an early bebop innovator who delivered his defining work with Blue Serge in 1956. He was admired for his lyrical agility on an often unwieldy instrument and apparently overcame some personal struggles to record this standout session for Capitol Records, which finds him backed by jazz greats Sonny Clark on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Philly Joe Jones on sticks. The album features a simmering, relaxed set of standards, including 'A Handful of Stars' and 'All the Things You Are' plus his own 'Susie's Blues.' Review: Helsinki-based sextet Soft Power return with their fourth release i a richly detailed and expansive jazz-rock record that confirms their standing as one of Finland's most original ensembles. Formed in 2015, the group continues to push forward with a sound rooted in Nordic jazz and progressive traditions, but always shaped by clarity, control and sharp melodic thinking. It's a new release that leans into modal harmony, rhythmic intricacy and instrumental colour, without ever tipping into excess. 'Zeppelin' unfurls with measured power, while the title track 'Space To Breathe' delivers a slow, immersive build full of harmonic subtlety and textural weight. Lush electric keys and layered horns give the record its warmth, while tight ensemble playing keeps the edges crisp. There's a sense of atmosphere here that's as important as any solo or theme i a carefully built tension between groove, abstraction and mood. Without falling into pastiche, the band channel the mysticism of 70s European fusion and reshape it for the present, offering a record that's cool, grounded and quietly complex. A standout addition to the Finnish jazz-rock catalogue and a clear sign that this group continues to grow with purpose.

Review: The Iron Curtain, a politically charged term of the 20th century, symbolised the divide between East and West. Winston Churchill famously referenced this metaphor, describing how an "Iron Curtain" descended upon Europe, obscuring the actions behind it. This two-parter record from Jazzman does the impossible, lifting the curtain through sound alone, representing jazz's ablation of political and cultural barriers, as it flourished in Soviet states and exposed the contradictory histories of Soviet jazz, from the 1960s to the 80s. Despite Cold War tensions and MADs, the Soviets didn't hold their breath for a second, embracing the jazz modernisms of hard bop, modal, Latin jazz and Eastern folk-jazz. The resilience of jazz artists during an era of geopolitical conflict thus offers a sprightly affirmation of spirituality and formal reinvention, in the face of adversity.

Review: The first album by saxophone player Takao Uematsu heard him flaunt his diaphragmatic abilities solo after a moment away from his merry band, the George Otsuka Group, which in turn took its name from the drummer whose rhythms you also hear on this record. Drawing clear inspiration from Joe Henderson, Uematsu's playing is marked by a distinctive blend of power, precision, and expressive depth that set him apart in Japan's jazz scene. Here on this curt suite in four movements, we hear insouciant tones meld with latent recuperations of structure, as on the bell-curving emotive peaks of 'TI' and the drum brushing deconstructions of 'Sleeve My Love', with gaping, catch-up rhythms handled masterfully by Otsuka.

Review: Casimir Liberski dives headfirst into the 8-bit dreamworld of Hyrule on The Z Suites, a full-length jazz reimagining of music from the Zelda series, refracted through improvisation, hands-on harmonies and playful abstraction. Drawing from the game series' NES and N64 eras (The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time) the Belgian pianist takes Koji Kondo's foundational themes and spins them into something both whimsical and exploratory. With his ReTRio, Liberski reshapes pixel-era melodies into living, breathing compositions that lean as much on spiritual jazz and 70s fusion as they do on cartridge nostalgia. Not just for Zelda heads, but anyone curious where game soundtracks and modern jazz collide.

Review: American jazz visionary Miles Davis teams up once again with Canadian arranger Gil Evans for a final collaboration that remains one of the most ambitious moments in either artist's catalogue. Originally released in 1960, this project blends classical Spanish motifs with the cinematic scope of Evans's orchestration and Davis's haunting, flugelhorn-led introspection. Built around Manuel de Falla's 'Will o' the Wisp' and Joaquin Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez', the album avoids jazz orthodoxy entirely in favour of a lush, hybrid form that feels less like a fusion than a full transformation. 'Solea' remains a high point, with its mounting tension and spacious arrangement capturing Davis at his most exploratory. This 65th anniversary reissue is pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing and sourced from the original masters, yielding the most dynamic and immersive version of this milestone to date. A timely reminder of just how singular Davis's vision wasiand how powerfully it still resonates.

Review: This vinyl-only survey refracts Okinawan folk traditions through vivid jazz-funk and big band arrangements, creating a prismatic, highly listenable archive of Japan's southern soul. Kiyoshi Yamaya's influence runs deep, his arrangements glowing with cinematic elegance on 'Ryukyu Miyabi 2' through to the festival-like drive of 'Ryukyu No Matsuri 1'. The percussive triptych 'Nishinjo-bushi/Asadoya Yunta/Tanchame' shifts with deft energy, while his solo pieces like 'Ryukyu No Sora' feel airier, almost impressionistic. Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys stir big band verve into 'Tanchame-bushi' and 'Hatoma-bushi', while Minoru Murayama's 'Asadoya Yunta' leans more contemplative. Kifu Mitsuhashi's takes on 'Tanchame' and 'Asadoya Yunta' feel grounded in breath and space, balancing the brassier moments with shakuhachi-led intimacy. The sequencing cleverly blurs the line between groove-heavy reimagination and respectful homage, shaping a dialogue that's rhythmic, emotive and alive. A treasure trove for collectors of Wamono, Asian jazz and crossover rarities and a striking monument to the genreless fluidity of folk, when placed in the right hands.

Review: American jazz drummer, composer and songwriter Max Roach's original song 'Freedom Day' formed part of his landmark 1960 album We Insist! Freedom Now Suite, made with lyricist Oscar Brown Jr. and sporting a searing vocal performance by Abbey Lincoln. The piece infamously rejoices at the emancipation of enslaved people in the US, yet it also refuses to shy from the continuation of racial injustices in the present day. Now, still amid the post-COVID fug, whence the messages of BLM and other movements resound as relevantly as ever before, Terri Lyne Carrington and Christie Dashiell's new reinterpretation of the Roach anthem hears a revivifying remix over jazz, electronics, and soulful vocals, retrofitting the original with signature percussions, electronics with a vibrant ensemble of Matthew Stevens, Simon Moullier, Morgan Guerin and Milena Casado.

First up he flips the age old classic 'Love and Happiness' into a smooth and seductive sound with lush chords and warming melodies. Flip it over and you will find a rework of 'How Can I Forget You' which becomes a Northern Soul great with big hooks and driving rhythms that will get big reactions in the club. Review: Spring has sprung into something resembling summer, and perhaps the best record through which to celebrate this transition is Brandee Younger's latest, Gadabout Season. The title - sparked by a word-of-the-day email on tour with longtime collaborators Rashaan Carter and Allan Mednard (gadabout meaning "someone who roves about aimlessly seeking amusemnt") - came to represent the Younger trio's mission to seek spontaneous lightness through movement and music. Writing from a cabin in upstate New York, and later recorded in her Harlem apartment, Younger embraced a slow, intentional process, fine-planing a canny compositional set informed by ancestral, influential sottos of jazz, hip-hop, classical and soul; all are heard to whisper in Younger's ear as she rides each song. It's the first major body of work made almost entirely on her own, and crucially, contains pieces crafted using Alice Coltrane's restored harp, now appropriately left in her care.

Review: Mexico City based "street jazz" maestro Soni Orbita are on a spiritual quest in sound. Jazz is what they use to communicate messages of love and freedom, and this new album for Departamento does just that across 8 magnificent new tracks. They are brilliantly complex in their arrangements but also hugely accessible thanks to their universal grooves and emotions. Elements of house, funk and disco all feature with piano anchoring each piece. The result is a deeply personal and meditative body of work that invites introspection while moving the body and soul with endlessly rich harmonies. This is bold, brilliant jazz for anyone seeking a path to higher consciousness.

Bluebell
Review: London-based producer Sholto (Oscar Robertson) teams up with Melbourne pianist Finn Rees for two collaborative pieces recorded in a short session at SFJ Studios. 'Love In Memory' and 'Bluebell' were laid down over consecutive days using analogue equipment, including mellotron, Wurlitzer and ribbon mics and mixed through a 70s Studer desk. The result is a measured blend of jazz-inflected composition and cinematic texture, leaning into the soft-focus feel of Italian film scores and 70s library music. 'Love In Memory' is the more stripped-back of the two, built around glissando keys and lightly arranged strings while 'Bluebell' adds bass from Matthew Hayes and develops in longer arcs, with warmer low-end and more defined structure. Both tracks avoid excess, favouring tone and pacing over virtuosity. String parts from Clementine Brown further the record's focus on texture rather than drama. The collaboration doesn't aim to be definitive but lands confidently as a quiet, well-formed experiment between two artists working with a shared vocabulary.

Review: Canadian-born, LA-based artist Mocky brings a disarmingly human touch to his first release for Stones Throw, a project centred on the richness of the voice as a communal instrument. Built with close friends gathered in his garage, the album resists digital sterility in favour of warmth and grain, with layered harmonies, live instrumentation and tape-recorded charm capturing something deeply analogue and alive. 'Infinite Vibrations' and 'Just A Little Lovin' balance gospel warmth with minimalist groove, while 'Wiggle Room' and 'Choir Beat' lean into playful vocal percussion. There's a through-line of intimacyitracks like 'Walking (Theme)' and '1000 Goodbyes' carry a sketch-like immediacy, like overheard ideas mid-bloom. Somewhere between soul, choral experiment and soft psych, this record feels like a family room jam reimagined as quiet protest against digital alienation. A celebration of imperfections, of singing together, and of sound as something tactile, felt, and free.

Review: Yet another star slice on Japan's genius jazz label Three Blind Mice, who've now reissued it again here, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio's Midnight Sugar, originally released in 1974, remains a landmark in Japanese jazz. Led by pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto - and with Hideto Kanai on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums - this stilly nighttime masterpiece is a true bask in a lamplit witching hour, nailed in the simple contrast of skeletal, swirling drum-brush playing and distant pianissimo. With striking renditions of jazz standards, including 'I'm A Fool To Want You' and 'The Nearness Of You,' where Yamamoto's delicate phrasing shines; the record's appeal rests in the trio's evident chemistry and Yamamoto's expressive yet precise touch.
