London's unstoppable Matsuli imprint, home to legendary reissues such as BATSUMI and African Song Bird, comes rolling through with another masterful stroke of South African jazz, this time by Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, a visionary and an untapped source of inspiration for many contemporary musicians. "Genes & Spirits" first came out in 2000, and is Moses' third studio LP, a follow-up to his debuts in the 90s. "Spirits Of Tembisa" is the real killer for the diggers and DJs here, touching down with fast breakbeats and an engulfing bass that reminds us of Photek in his late 90s golden era. However, there are also plenty of moodier, more ethereal moments like "Itumeleng" or the charming tones of "Genes & Spirits" itself. Whatever your needs, Molelekwa will undoubtedly satisfy them. Highly recommended.
