Having come to the fore as part of South Wales quartet CRST, Cardiff producer Che Ahmed has quietly grown in repute, be it his solo endeavours as Chesus and Metabeats as part of The Darkhouse Family. Clearly one for adopting aliases, a new one is borne in the form of Earl Jeffers with a worthy two track drop for regular outlet Catapult. Run out of the Cardiff record shop of the same name, Catapult have deftly carved out a spot on the house music map for the Welsh capital - their success qualified by the recent signing of Chesus and Organ Grinder to Addison Groove's Lost In Translation label. As Earl Jeffers, Ahmed doffs his New Era cap respectfully to the sounds of Detroit on "Surely Not", specifically Mr Mahogani Kenny Dixon Jnr. There's a delight in the way that looped up vocal gets gently pushed around the channels amidst the dusty groove that is immediately gratifying. Complementing this, "British Knights" is perhaps our second favourite sneaker referencing track after Beautiful Swimmers forthcoming "New Balance" and deftly merges elements of UK Funky with old school Chicago jack. Tipped cos it's top!
