Rocket No 3 (limited 7")

Rocket No 3 (feat Jan Delay) (3:59)
Rocket No 3 (version) (3:59)
Review: Back in the early 2000s, Stefan Schwander (better known these days for his Harmonious Thelonious project) released a handful of fine 12" singles as A Rocket In Dub that successfully blurred the boundaries between minimal house and dub techno. Here, one of the series' most renowned cuts, 'Rocket No. 3', is revisited. Like the 2002 original mix, the A-side version is a hypnotic, softly spun delight, with echoing organ motifs, bubbly electronics, opaque synth sounds and new spoken word snippets (provided by fellow German artist Jan Delay) gently rising above a deep, dubby bassline and sparse, shuffling tech-house beats. Over on the flip, there's a dub style 'Version' mix that takes the track further into vintage Rhythm & Sound territory.

Dirty South Dirt
Dirty South Dirt (Anticipation dub)
Review: Kai Alce on FXHE is a real coming together of two US powerhouses, and so it proved when this EP first landed back in 2010. It finds the Atlanta house mainstay in fine form on 'Dirty South Dirt'. It's a humid, stripped-back, dusty house cut with supple synth daubs adding warmth and soul. All these years on the track has lost none of its magic, and on the flipside is an 'Anticipation dub' which layers in some sensors vital whispers to the dubby, cuddly and deep house drums. These are two classy cuts.

Cat: POPR 006. Rel: 26 Mar 25
9 1391919 21 (4:36)
17151425 (4:57)
Review: Delivering two boundary-pushing deep house cuts that fuse Detroit influences with global rhythmic elements, this little 7" packs a punch. Side-1's '9 1391919 21' rolls in with deep bass and a laid-back yet funky groove. The Detroit foundation is undeniable, but the infusion of world-inspired instrumentation adds a rich, cultural texture, making it both smooth and dynamic. Flipping over, '17151425' shifts into high gear with an uptempo, warehouse-ready energy. Sci-fi atmospheres swirl around tribal drumming, creating a hypnotic, alien-like rhythm that feels raw yet futuristic. A forward-thinking release from a producer deeply connected to both underground traditions and global sounds.

Stevie? (Caserta Sunday Saint mix) (6:04)
Stevie? (JoDaCe Saturday Sinner mix) (5:57)
Review: Caserta is legendary digger Kon's long time engineer, and he sure does have a wealth of tricks up his own sleeve. Here he gets to tackle his own super 7" on the Bridge Boots label and first off he serve sup a lovely take on a Stevie Wonder tune. 'Stevie?' (Caserta Sunday Saint mix) has mid-tempo grooves rolling away nicely beneath exquisite synth work and a well-treated vocal from the man himself. JoDaCe steps up on the flip for a Saturday Sinner mix that is more driving and ready for the club. The bass is rugged, the vocals more looped and freaky, the effect just as brilliant but in different ways.

Damp & Warm
Review: A near daily ritual at the Juno offices in recent months has been to sit through the grainy YouTube footage of Dungeon Acid aka underground Swedish techno legend Jean-Louis Huhta drop some amazingly disjointed techno dripping with acid flavours at last years Nordberg festival. Now, finally, the first fruits arrive on this classy little seven inch courtesy of iDEAL Recordings. The stripped back "Warm & Damp" lays the emphasis on a slowly bubbling cloud of acid effects, with the pitter patter of drums barely noticeable, whilst its flipside counterpart "Damp & Warm" cranks up the schizoid acid action exponentially across a backdrop of skeletal drums. Whispers of a Dungeon Acid album later in the year are real cause for excitement!

Holland
Review: With "Covers" we welcome Jimmy Tamborello back into the murky world of Kompakt-influenced techno blended delicately with American Indie - something that we first witnessed on last year's bizarrely titled '"Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake". Recording here as James Figurine, "Covers" is the first of a trio of limited edition vinyl-only 7" releases coming out on Plug Research. Harnessing a softer sound than his aforementioned album, Tamborello steps back into Postal Service territory to lay down his own versions Big Audio Dynamite's "Other 99" and The Untitled's (Cynthia Dahl and Bill Callahan's project) "Holland".

Get Down (3:58)
Dirty (3:42)
Review: Florence is back on their own self titled label for a fifth outing that once again brings hardcore funk groves laden with great samples. 'Get Down' is raw and driving with hard hits and bouncing bass all delivered in a lo-fi style under guttural vocals. 'Dirty' is more sleazy and low slung with a more seductive vocal sound and plenty of modern synth lines next to the authentic rhythm section sounds. Whoever is behind this project sure knows how to cook up the funky goods and then some.

Mystical Dub (2:48)
Review: Jamie McCue, who is behind the classic Silent Season label, steps out here with a new label called Moon Garden. Hidden Sequence inaugurate it with a limited edition 7" that sets a great standard from the off. 'Studio A' is a liquid dub with delicate hi-hats sprinkled over loose, tumbling drums and rich sub-bass. It's vast in sauce and impossible not to sink into. 'Mystical Dub' on the B-side is an even more paired back ambient dub with a barely-there rhythm slowly unfolding beneath conscious mutterings and distant, muted melodies. It's late-night weed music of the highest order.

Kolorit (1:41)
Review: Workshop is one of those labels that has always operated at the fringes of genre. Deep house and techno are the loose starting points in many cases, but artists never fail to veer off into the shadowy nether worlds that surround those basic forms. Kolorit does that here with two intriguing cuts all with the same name. The first has lumpy scattered drums, scraping sounds, ticking hi-hats and freaky noise samples all peppering them. The second has haunting chords sequences over a ticking sound that is coated in hiss and crackle. It's late night and mysterious. The third has clattering percussion and shimmering synths that rise and fall and build in tension and intensity.

People Talk (acapella) (3:37)
Review: Brazilian tech house up and comer L_cio, known to his Mum as Laercio Schwantes Iorio finally gets his day on wax with this new one on the DOC label. On the A-side is "People Talk" with pop induced tech house reminiscent of the Kompakt style, moody as hell and big on atmosphere with uber cool male vocals courtesy of Japan based Brit Aroop Roy. On the flip is the accapella but it's more of a beatless version, keeping the druggy mesmerising melody and said uber cool vocals by Roy. A fine little 7" nugget from DOC.

Review: Acid Cuts is a label based in Athens, Greece, that was founded in 2016 and has since released several records by Melatonin Man, Wata Igarashi, Kovyazin D, Drvg Cvltvre, and JTC among others. Its latest comes from Craig Stainton aka Mantra, who follows up his excellent Into Motion LP on the label with another swift release which features two strong tracks. On the first side, you've got the slinky and hypnotic late night 303 jack of 'First Born', while over on the flip 'Stand Together' is a good old fashioned acid house stomper that's perfect for those heads down moments.

Mondpfad (4:11)
Review: Emerging hero of the Russian techno underground Pavel Milyakov aka Buttechno appears here for new Kiev based imprint Muscut. A diversion from his usual dusty, lo-fi techno experiments, here Milyakov presents some surreal dark ambient excursions ike on the dreamy opener "Mondjazz" and the jagged and disjointed arpeggiation of "Audiopfad" which is supported by textured and noisy field recordings for added measure. On the B side, "Mondjungi" rinses snares through tape delay so that they disperse frantically across the audio spectrum, while some woozy and sinister pads keep you calm amidst all the madness. Finally the title track creeps you out nicely with its gradually evolving pad chord swimming amidst haunted layers of odd tonality.

Legacy (4:33)
Legacy (Dubstramental) (4:33)
Review: Yoruba has always done tech house with a difference - a genuine sense of spiritually and Afro groove permeates the music it put out. A prime example of that is this new collaboration between Oveous and Don Kamares. The former lays down spoke-sung lyrics that muse son legacy and being true to yourself. They're stream of conscious and never stop as the production from Kamares shines. It's a deep house cut with lithe drums and shiny synths that move about the mix and grow in stature. If you prefer to keep it more striped back, a flip-side instrumental will do the trick.

Morrison Hotel (3:50)
Crab (3:51)
Review: Edit labels never seem handier than when the sun is out and the dancing moves outdoors. There is something about a beefed-up classic or tweaked disco cut that just works when we are all at our most fun-loving. Te Pina label is here to help on that front with a tenth EP of exquisite edits. 'Morrison Hotel' is low-slung house with samples of The Doors and skewed leads all powered by a fulsome bassline. 'Crab' is a funky disco number with chunky drums and claps.

Work (4:50)
Movedat (4:49)
Review: Ben Hixon has steadily released house gem after house gem on his Dolfin imprint. The label in just a little over eight years has created quite a robust discography with no signs of letting up. The newest 'Work', almost goes without saying that it reminds of us classic Chi-Town tracks from the heyday. But as the track moves on, you quickly forget the comparison as those beautiful keys play and the atmosphere sets in. Both 'Work' and 'Movedat' feature vocals from Rami who is co-credited on this wax. 'Movedat' is a bit more a minimal house banger but still is full of soul. Both tracks are strong winners and are sure to get a big response from patrons of the dancefloor. This 7" is limited to only 200 copies so grab one quickly!

Review: One of the most requested releases in the UR catalogue and now seen as an absolute classic. Out of print for 3 years now, this is a well overdue repress. "Transition" is an amazing piece of work and features both English and Spanish voices urging you to make that transition. "Inspiration", a live favourite from last years Galaxy 2 Galaxy shows is Mad Mike at his most uplifting and soulful.

One Pill (Reversed) (5:29)
Review: Minimal and tech house doesn't often come on 7", let alone a picture disc, so this one has got us interested and it doesn't disappoint. VNSSA is behind the tune which comes in two different versions. 'One Pill' is a chunky party starter with monstrous drums and raw bass, spooky vocal leads and a generally trippy, haunting feel that will get big reactions. 'One Pill (Reversed)' is the freaky B-side that plays the vocal backwards for even more occult madness. Wonderfully weird!
