Review: The 1950s marked the rise of Japan's modern jazz scene, with the Big Four, helmed by George Kawaguchi, playing a pivotal role. Over the years, the ensemble saw shifts in its lineup but maintained its influence on Japanese jazz. Originally released in 1969 as part of Victor's Japanese Jazz series, George & Sleepy captures both the essence and evolution of this revered group. While tracks like 'Lover' and 'Charade' reflect a sense of nostalgia, echoing the Big Four's golden era, the album is anything but a mere look back. Pieces like 'Tuesday Samba' offer a polished, contemporary groove, while the rhythm-forward 'Vietnam' adds an intriguing exotic flair. The balance between timeless jazz sensibilities and forward-thinking arrangements gives this record.

Review: Sharps and Flats, under the direction of Nobuo Hara, has significantly influenced Japan's big band jazz landscape. Their album Little Giant, originally released in 1970 as part of Victor's Japanese Jazz series, remains a key highlight in their extensive catalog. This release features the talents of notable composers and arrangers, including Masao Yagi, Kiyoshi Yamaya, Norio Maeda, and Masahiko Sato, alongside innovative arrangements of works by Oliver Nelson, a close collaborator. The albums intricate and bold arrangements reveal the band's exceptional performance caliber. The track 'Little Giant' radiates coolness, while 'Dark Horse' exudes strength. 'Orbit 8:11' introduces an edgy sound, and 'Flexibility' displays refined sophistication. The musicians deliver a compelling interplay of energy and calm, reflecting the band's versatility. Now reissued on vinyl, this work captures the distinctive charm and skill of Sharps and Flats, presenting an exciting experience for listeners. It's a vibrant representation of adventurous big band jazz that continues to resonate.

Review: In 1970, Akira Ishikawa, a key figure in the jazz rock movement, ventured into bold new territory with his album Electrum. This ambitious project shows his innovative spirit, pushing jazz boundaries with its intense, precise grooves and the musicians' quest for new heights. The album features standout tracks like the tempestuous 'Electrum,' the complexly layered 'Revulsion,' and the tranquil 'Speak Under My Breath,' which captures the serene clarity of dawn. The presence of distinguished pianists and arrangers Masahiko Sato and Hiromasa Suzuki adds further depth and brilliance to this already vibrant work. Electrum is celebrated as a major achievement in Ishikawa's career and is a notable highlight within the Victor "Japanese Jazz" series. Its revival brings renewed attention to Ishikawa's groundbreaking exploration of jazz fusion.

Review: Undeniably one of the most prolific anime soundtracks of all time, Yoko Kanno's band SEATBELTS was formed just to record this 1998 OST for Shinichiro Watanabe's smash success 'Cowboy Bebop'. Following the adventures of the crew of Bebop, a bounty hunter ship that chases criminals and turns them into the Inter Solar System Police for reward, Kanno's zany fusion of rock, blues and jazz oozes cool. The opening track 'Tank!' has been hugely influential, informing innumerable title sequences, from 'Danganronpa' to 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure'. Focusing, as the Japanese often do, on Americana hallmarks, there is a distinct New York slant in the horns with some Afro-Cuban percussive influences as well, most notably on 'Rush' from the first 'COWBOY BEBOP' album. This boxset serves as a comprehensive rundown of all things SEATBELTS, an 11-vinyl boxset featuring all 7 albums the band have made for the legendary franchise housed in a box with art from the show.

Review: 1969 was the year of release of this one and only album by Japanese jazz pianist Hideo Ichikawa, vibraphonist Hiroshi Matsumoto, bassist Kunimitsu Inaba and drummer Motohiko Hino, all in collaboration. A one-off coming-together, it centred on the valerian vibes of Matsumoto, whose star instrument, the vibraphone, was bound to take centre stage for its comparative novelty, not to mention the fact that Matsumoto himself had been practicing before the others. An honorary work, this urbane masterpiece hears tasteful vibraphonic panning in full stereo, as blue passing notes collide with expert steel brushings and untied chord playing, resulting in a unique but salubrious listen.

Review: One of many names in the pantheons of Tokyo's electronic music triumphs, despite their acclaim, reverence among boffins, and the sprinkling of high profile UK remixers that helped spread their output further (copies of reworkings by The Black Dog, Autechre and Global Communication fetch a fair song on the resale market) most will never have heard about Nav Katze. Their loss, and one we'd like to put right if possible.

Formed in 1984 as a trio - Naoko Iimura (guitar), Miwako Yamaguchi (vocals and bass), and Shino Furutachi (drums) - the band would put out two well received record on SWITCH before migrating to the far more prominent label Victor Music Industries for 1991's Kanki, at which point three became two with Furutachi stepping down. This package showcases not only why their original material was so sought after, with trance notes, IDM and ambient and pop meeting in beautiful soundscapes - but also what can happen when new parties get involved, with remixes from Aphex Twin, Sun Electric and Disjecta included.

Review: Shungo Sawada, a trailblazer in Japan's modern jazz scene, delivers a rare gem with his album Formation. Despite his status as a legendary guitarist since the 1940s, Sawada's discography under his own name is surprisingly sparse, making this release particularly noteworthy. Formation opens with a distinctive rendition of Wayne Shorter's 'Footprints'ielegant and refined, yet imbued with a cool, understated charm. The album then shifts gears with the energetic title track, 'Formation,' before diving into the jazz-rock fusion of 'Unlucky Guy.' It concludes with another Shorter composition, 'Chief Crazy Horse,' bringing the album to a thoughtful close. This collection has Sawada's versatility and mastery on full display, providing a polished and cohesive snapshot of Japan's "new mainstream" jazz movement.

Review: This remarkable live jazz workshop brings together the talents of Yosuke Yamashita, Itaru Oki, Yuji Ohno and Kimiko Kasai for an unforgettable listen. Recorded in 1970 as part of Victor's "Japanese Jazz" series, this album showcases three powerful trios-Yamashita, Oki, and Ohno-with vocalist Kasai and each artist contributes their own unique style. Yamashita led the scene with his vibrant playing, Oki brought fresh perspectives from Osaka, Ohno's versatility spanned modern to new jazz and Kasai's vocal prowess was just beginning to bloom at this time. Together, the seven artists create a dynamic two-disc trip that is full of the famous originality and intensity of Japanese jazz.
