Review: The ill-fated Sex Pistols US tour of January 1978 has become as infamous and discussed as the band themselves, as it came at a time of rife turmoil between members whilst it was potentially beginning to dawn on them how out of place they were on their label, how inconsiderate and mismanaged they were being treated and how much more of a travelling circus show those in attendance were paying to see rather than genuinely caring for the music or message in the same manner of their homegrown fanbase. This exhaustion, frustration and evident burnout was all captured during these live performances, which after several semi-coherent releases have finally been isolated, properly sequenced and finally deliver the closest fly-on-the-wall experience to these implosive shows yet. Taken from their set at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, this is peak pissed off Pistols on the cusp of their ultimate breaking point. While the band are currently enjoying a celebratory jaunt with former Gallows vocalist Frank Carter replacing the MAGA man John Lydon, delivering the closest experience to the Never Mind The Bollocks era yet, those who'd rather not spend more than 100 quid on a ticket can now experience the authentic real thing from the comfort of their turntable.

Review: Seminal; containing or contributing to the seeds of later development: creative, original. Or at least that's one definition of a word that rarely feels more appropriate than when used in conjunction with Sex Pistols. Quite where we're supposed to begin writing about The Filth & The Fury is anyone's guess. A retrospective compilation encapsulating some of the punk pioneers' most cherished moments, alongside a slew of material that many less-informed fans may have previously been unaware of, let's start by simply saying 'it bangs'. Understatement of the century, despite their back catalogue of just one LP, Sex Pistols actually had an extraordinary output in terms of volume in the run up to debut (and sole) album, Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols. Review: Nowadays regarded as the stuff of punk legend, the chaotic and ill-fated jaunt undertaken by the Sex Pistols across the US in January of 1978 was hindered by so many differing factors, it was almost as if they were set to fail. Plagued by poor management while trapped on a label with no real idea how to market such a tumultuous roster outlier, the band found themselves performing for those there out of mere curiosity more than their targeted audience or genuine fans, culminating in severe burn-out in real time, captured on these recordings. Finally, for the first time, several of these shows have been retooled to their correct sequencing with this collection reflecting the debaucherous live sets in all their feral glory that took place on January 5th at the South East Music Hall in Atlanta, Georgia, January 10th at the Longhorns Ballroom in Dallas, Texas, and January 14th at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, California. Review: A band who never stood still from the moment they emerged in the punk explosion, Siouxsie & The Banshees were a vital force in alternative British music whose legacy is still being understood now. By the time they reached their final album, 1995's The Rapture, they had assimilated punk, goth, pop and chamber music into a compelling whole which gave producer John Cale plenty to work with. One listen to the epic scope of the album's title track proves the point on a stirring 11-minute arc of orchestration and unsettling undercurrents. If it was a lot to take in on release, it's aged beautifully and now sees reissue as a double blue vinyl edition for National Album Day 2023.

Review: An end-of-year reissue campaign makes for a nice retrospective of the best works of American rockers Steely Dan, formed in part by this reissue of their seventh studio album, Gaucho. A monumental effort in ensemble recording, Becker and Fagen exploited the labour-power of over 42 different session musicians and supporting cast members for. this feat, notably exceeding the budget advanced to them by MCA. With a greater focus on rhythmic progression and atmospherics than songwriting compared to their earlier works, it made sense for the group to lay down just seven tracks, with the likes of 'Hey Nineteen' and 'Glamour Profession' standing out as luminaries of their ever-so-yachty corner.

Review: National Album Day 2024 is here and as part of it, Sugarbabes' Angels With Dirty Faces album has been pressed up to limited translucent yellow vinyl. The second album by the group marked a pivotal moment in their career. Released in 2002, it showcased a fresh, mature sound that blended pop, r&b and electronic influences into standout hits like 'Freak Like Me' and 'Round Round,' both of which helped the trio solidify their place in the UK pop canon. The album's edgy production and catchy melodies helped it achieve critical and commercial success and it eventually went triple platinum. Angels With Dirty Faces not only redefined the Sugababes' image but also cemented their reputation as pop legends.

Review: Manafon by David Sylvain of Japan fame is an underrated gem. The electroacoustic improvisation, complete lack of drums, coupled with Sylvain's voice right at the front of the mix, makes for an ambient, freeform and highly experimental sound. The art-pop sonics that saw him gain success in the 70s and 80s is left firmly in the past and he's doing exactly the music he wants hear - not what's expected of him commercially. Now, on vinyl for the first time, comes remixes by classical contemporary genius Dai Fujikura - he wrote the string parts - of six songs from said album. There's also new songs, heavily influenced by Fujikura and an 18-minute piece ('When We Return You Won't Recognise Us') culled from a much longer sound installation that Fukikura and Sylvain created together for the 2008-09 Biennial of Canaries in Gran Canaria. How music this sublime hasn't been on vinyl from the start is beyond us. Thankfully, that's now rectified.

Review: You can go one of two ways as an artist when you've had pop success early in life: you keep the wheel because the wheel isn't broken. Or you change the wheel and reinvent yourself and make music that's true to yourself and not guided by commercial expectation. David Sylvain has done the latter with aplomb. At the time of making this album, which is the companion album to Blemish (2003) and now on vinyl for the first time, he was free from the shackles of a major label and diving headfirst into improvisation. You can't even faintly hear echoes of the band that made his name - new wave icons Japan. For these remixes Sylvian worked with the likes of Ryoji Ikeda, Burnt Friedman, and Readymade FC, although some songs were re-recorded rather than remixed. 'Late Night Shopping', remixed by Friedman, is a great entry point to this work, with dark beats and eerie noises, making for an atmospheric triumph. This is an album that pushes music as an artform forward. Long may Sylvain continue.

Review: It's been a missing artefact for years. It's a travesty that this compilation hasn't been on vinyl until now, but The Verve have set things straight in time for its 20th anniversary. Even though The Verve were only together for a relatively brief time (1990 - 1999 and 2007-2009) they left behind a catalogue of untouchable songs. 'Sonnet', Lucky Man' and 'The Drugs Don't Work' are all bangers, but that's just scratching the surface of what they were capable of. They're a band of incredible breadth. In their early years, they were more psychedelic and leant into sonic wig outs, led by the inimitable genius of guitar player Nick McCabe. Meanwhile, as Richard Ashcroft neared his departure from the band and set out on a solo career, their material got a lot more song-based and they would be reframed as a Britpop group. The addition of the eight-and-a-half-minute version of their second single 'She's A Superstar' (1992) on this version of the album for the first time, helps to emphasise their shoegaze-y legacy. Meanwhile, we're reminded how great the songs of their reformation period are with 'Love Is Noise' and 'Rather Be', which is the other additional feature for this anniversary release.

Review: The tenth studio album from Tom Waits, released in 1987 via Island Records, was yet another landmark in a career which, by this point, had already given us a raft of stone cold classics. The last two of those LPs, Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs, certainly swerved expectations, marking a new period in the life and times of an acclaimed jazz and blues man. Taking its name from a track on Swordfish, Frank's Wild Years is actually "Un Operachi Romantico in Two Acts" according to the subtitle, with several songs here taken from a play of the same name which premiered in Chicago a year prior. In many ways, the theatrical side story was an inevitability, with the previous records all pointing in the direction of a gravelly blues-jazz-rock core with a vaudeville, spoken word, and narrative disposition.
