Chords (LP)
Cat: SUB 029. Rel: 11 Jun 19
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Chords For Organ (15:51)
  2. Chords For Guitar (16:53)
Review: As hinted by the stark but bold cover art, Stockholm-based experimental composer Ellen Arkbro has adopted a more minimalist approach on her latest album for James Ginzburg's admirable Subtext label. "Chords" comprises two lengthy pieces, each of which stretches out alluringly across a side of vinyl. A-side "Chords For Organ" sets the tone, with Akbro making merry with unsettling sustained notes, foreboding electronic tones and droning electronic pulses. It's pretty challenging, but strangely alluring in a mind-altering kind of way. "Chords For Guitar" applies a similar approach to effects-laden guitar passages, with individual notes - processed to resemble odd electronic tones - sparring with slowly strummed chords over 17 mesmerizing minutes.

Review: For the uninitiated, Blessed Initiative is a new project from Ketev man Yair Elazar Glotman. This debut album for pal James Ginzburg's Subtext Recordings label is little less than a sonic manifesto. According to the accompanying information, the album is the result of a long and complex sound design process that variously involved manipulating tape recordings, recording his own foley style sound effects, and putting the whole thing together with the aid of a customized workstation. The results are largely very impressive though, sitting somewhere between claustrophobic sound collage and drowsy, meandering ambience. In other words, despite the high-minded experimentation behind it, Blessed Initiative just sounds great.

Review: Bristolian noise merchants Paul Purgas and James Ginzburg show you where it all began on the re-issue of their 2009 debut album. Laying down the formations of their signature sound design skills, a while before they were mic'ing up abandoned buildings, recording the natural dynamics and reverberations of their extreme sub bass explorations. Nonetheless, their abrasive and textured experiments in bass driven techno are still of honorable mention on this release like on the sinister low slung grooves of "Gate 1" and "Gate 2" respectively. The extreme noise terror of "Gate 4" where they nailed their now signature sound and not to mention now classics such as "Beyond" and the grinding "Completely Gone".
