Chords For Organ (15:51)
Chords For Guitar (16:53)
Review: As hinted by the stark but bold cover art, Stockholm-based experimental composer Ellen Arkbro has adopted a more minimalist approach on her latest album for James Ginzburg's admirable Subtext label. "Chords" comprises two lengthy pieces, each of which stretches out alluringly across a side of vinyl. A-side "Chords For Organ" sets the tone, with Akbro making merry with unsettling sustained notes, foreboding electronic tones and droning electronic pulses. It's pretty challenging, but strangely alluring in a mind-altering kind of way. "Chords For Guitar" applies a similar approach to effects-laden guitar passages, with individual notes - processed to resemble odd electronic tones - sparring with slowly strummed chords over 17 mesmerizing minutes.

Demiurge: Of Blackest Grain To Missive Ruin (Paul Jebanasam Variation)
Function: Vulgar Display Of Power (Roly Porter Variation)
Review: With an approach that takes inspiration from the industrial ambience of Throbbing Gristle and Regis into a particularly dense sound, Emptyset find material from their recent Demiurge album reworked by kindred spirits and Subtext label associates Paul Jabanasam and Roly Porter. Jabanasam's take on "Demiurge" is filled with juddering bass tones which grow out of a dread filled soundscape like arcane monoliths, while Roly Porter's variation on "Function" builds layers of drone into a sedate drift before pneumatic bullets of sounds disrupt the serene mood. Not for the fainthearted.

Interstice

Mirror
Review: Electronic music is meant to provide a release from the real world, but Medium, the latest missive by UK producer Emptyset, will bring anyone who hears it crashing back to the earth. Emptyset's approach makes nods to narratives from the past, taking influence from the tortured industrial noise of Throbbing Gristle, the eerie ambience of Regis and minimal techno at its most reductionist. On "Interstice", this latter trait manifests itself as dead paced beats and frost percussion disappear into nothingness only to re-appear a few seconds later. On "Other", Emptyset does more to reintroduce the spirit of industrial to contemporary electronic music than a shelf full of situationist techno releases; murderous sub-bass stabs provide the focus, but on the sidelines eerie sound scapes and textures are unfolding, accompanied by skittish percussion. "Mirror" meanwhile sees waves of white noise and static interference and a rave siren build over doubled-up death pace beats. These are the closest references to structured electronic music. "Divide" delivers a tapestry of detached sounds while on "Medium" itself, Emptyset wallows in menacing bass licks with background noise seething beneath the surface. This is music that matches the unparalleled dark age we are living through, and just this once, the Medium really is the message.

Review: Eric Holm's debut album, Andoya, was arguably one of the most impressive dark ambient releases of 2014. This follow-up, also released by Bristol-based purveyors of doom Subtext, is every bit as moody, atmospheric, bleak and otherworldly. Those inspired by electronic music's dark, damp corners will find much to enjoy, from the creepy, slowly unfurling drone textures of "Siebe" and melancholic dreaminess of "Enceladus", to the metallic iciness of "Nereus Vent", and the poignant, heart-aching wooziness of "AH-5". Given the album's construction and the slowly shifting nature of Holm's compositions, short clips really don't do it justice. It may not be a masterpiece, but it's hugely impressive nevertheless.

Track 3 (15:53)
Review: Bristol's Subtext is now home to a stunning mixture of artists from all over the electronic sphere, and aside from being one of Roly Porter's birthing grounds, the label has released plenty of choice output from both Emptyset and Paul Jebanasam, among others. The latter is back this week three untitled snippets of sounds under the Continuuum heading, the first of which is a noisy chance of industrial feedback-funk, and the second a fluttering wave of lonesome sonics, and lo-fi glitches. Lastly, the B-side hurls in a load of pseudo beats, all rolling and disjointed, to go alongside the steely pile of noise drones that engulf your ears with fury.

Review: The former Vex'd conspirator and Bristol-dwelling Mr Porter is carving out a fine new space for himself amongst like-minded noise-tinkerers such as Emptyset, and here he delivers a new long-player of nail-biting soundscapes that successfully refigure the bombast of his previous endeavours and applies it to more abstract realms. For every cacophonic crescendo there is an arresting lull, as fearsomely demonstrated on "Gravity", and it's astounding just how much this is about melody, harmony and timbre as much as sonic texture. Steeped in evocative string arrangements and ever moving through different scenarios, the tapestry woven here is a must for anyone craving the intersection between classical and avant-garde composition.

Review: While composing his first solo album in almost half a decade, Roly Porter apparently drew inspiration from Neolithic burial sites, though musically "Kistvaen" sounds more like it was partly influenced by early music and in particular medieval religious laments. Either way, the resulting music is melancholic and magical, joining the dots between atmospheric neo-classical movements, clandestine dark ambient electronics, experimental sound design and unsettling drone tones. It's a musical mixture that's gripping, poignant and otherworldly in equal measure, with Porter's extensive use of distinctively old-fashioned (and more than a little ecclesiastical) vocals only adding to the album's obvious allure.

Review: Three years on from the release of her acclaimed debut album, "Epoch Sinus", on Hotflush, Sophie Schnell once more dons the PYUR alias for a follow-up on Subtext. The Bristol-based experimental label says that the set explores Schnell's fascination with "the space between life and death"; it's certainly an unearthly, unsettling and occasionally hallucinatory affair that fuses neo-classical style musical elements (strings, operatic vocals) with evocative electronic motifs, crunchy IDM style drums and cutting-edge production techniques. It's a genuinely unique and mind-altering affair, but one that thrills and excites at every turn. A triumph!
