Review: 30 years ago in August, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery aka Janes Addiction put out their second album. It proved the most critically acclaimed and successful of all their work and in fact was their last for 13 years. Few other alternative rock albums have ever come close to the impact of the one. Fact fans will know, of course, the original record came with three different covers, and might also have read that the tortuous recording process behind the album is what eventually lead to the group's demise.

Review: What is left to be written about the debut Joy Division album that hasn't been written already? Well, not much except to say if you've never heard it, you must. This is the more raw of the two studio albums, powered mainly by the foundations laid down by bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. But although the rudimentary electronic experimentalism of its successor Closer are missing - with the possible exception of 'She's Lost Control' - Martin Hannett's production job creates an uneasy world of magical reverbs and echoes that lure in the listener. From its iconic, Peter Saville sleeve to classic songs like 'Shadowplay' and 'Interzone' - which started life as a cover of Nolan Porter's Northern Soul cult hit 'Keep On Keeping On' - this is the template that effectively launched a thousand bands, from indie and post punk to goth and beyond.

Review: Love's Now Playing on translucent red vinyl is a compelling collection from the iconic American rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1965 and - helmed by Arthur Lee - one of the first racially diverse rock bands in the US. Their music, a blend of garage, folk-rock, and psychedelia, never reached massive commercial success but earned critical acclaim and has grown in popularity in time. It's effectively a greatest hits comp and from the epic longing 'My Little Red Book' and 'Alone Again O' - which The Damned subsequently turned into a hit in the 80s - to the more introspective 'A House Is Not a Motel" and 'You Set the Scene', it's the perfect starting point for those wishing to dip a toe into these rich creative waters.
