Review: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Déjà Vu stands as a landmark in rock history, a stunning blend of folk, country, and harmony-rich psychedelia. Released in 1970, the album showcases timeless tracks like ‘Teach Your Children,’ ‘Our House,’ and ‘Woodstock,’ each carving their place into the annals of pop culture. With a sound as lush as it is groundbreaking, the quartet’s masterful musicianship and soul-stirring lyrics define this essential piece of rock's golden era. Simply put: unmissable.

Review: A limited-edition version of one of the high-water marks of The Cult's back catalogue. Originally released in 2001, it was their first album in more than six years and showcases the band's return to their signature rock sound while also dabbling with new techniques. It's the only Cult album to feature one of rock's all-time greats - Guns N' Roses' Matt Sorum - on drums. And it's immensely powerful, with 'War (The Process)' and 'Take The Power' leaving you breathless thanks to flashy guitar solos and head banging choruses. Elsewhere, 'Nico' slows things down a bit - a lighter in the air moment perhaps. Overall, it's an epic rock production singing all the right notes by bringing a dash of goth to classic rock.

Review: This album, originally released in 1989, and now expanded for a deluxe edition, is god-tier stuff from The Cure. The 'Pictures Of You' melody is emotional enough to draw tears from those with stone hearts. And similarly to many of the tracks on this album, 'Lovesong' still forms a really important part of their live set as there's beautiful interplay between keys and bass, whilst Robert Smith's heartfelt poetry is filled with conviction. In terms of album openers they don't come much stronger than 'Plainsong', which is a melancholic, dark synthgaze-y masterpiece that will stop you in your tracks whatever you're doing.

Review: Japanese Whispers stands as a crucial juncture in The Cure's evolution, capturing a transformative period for the band. Amidst lineup changes and creative exploration, this compilation album bridges their gothic roots with a newfound synth-pop sound. Tracks like 'Let's Go to Bed' and 'The Lovecats' showcase Robert Smith's emerging versatility as a songwriter and producer, marking a departure from their earlier introspective rock. Despite its status as a compilation, Japanese Whispers is a gem often overlooked for its significance. This reissue offers fans a chance to rediscover its brilliance. With its effervescent melodies and cheeky nods to jazz and dance music, Japanese Whispers laid the groundwork for The Cure's future endeavors and remains a testament to their enduring influence.

Review: Machine Head is the 1972 sixth LP from Deep Purple, best known for its pandora's box-style unleashing of one of the best-recalled rock riffs in the world: 'Smoke On The Water'. Now Warner and Rhino honour the album's boisterous legacy with a comprehensive reissued version, with new mixes and previously unreleased live recordings all in tow. The new indie exclusive mainly recalls such intensive wildouts such as 'Never Before', 'Lazy' and 'Highway Star', all of which betray the tightest of tight early heavy metal playing, as the genre transpired gracefully outwards from the groundwater spring of rock & roll in the early-to-mid 70s; in fact, the band and album were considered somewhat responsible for the development for the heavy metal genre as a whole; no wonder Machine Head was their most successful album.

Review: The album stands as a bold testament to progressive metal, combining complex arrangements, heavy instrumentation and deeply introspective themes. The band's musicianship is in peak form, with the guitarist delivering stunning solos that blend intricate leads and rhythmic precision. The music oscillates between hard-hitting tracks and melodic ballads, with standout moments in songs like the aggressive 'Lie', the challenging 'The Mirror' and the emotional depth of 'Lifting Shadows off a Dream'. There are also reflective acoustic pieces and an instrumental, showcasing the band's versatility. Lyrically, the album explores existential themes with sharp, cynical undertones, while recurring musical motifs provide a sense of cohesion. The album is ambitious and complex, balancing heaviness with moments of subtlety, making it a rewarding experience for listeners who appreciate intricate compositions and raw emotional expression.

Review: Images & Words remains one of Dream Theater's most defining moments, blending the technical precision of progressive metal with rich, lyrical depth. 'Pull Me Under' is, of course, the standout, its intricate guitar work matched by an anthemic energy that never loses its grip. But it's tracks like 'Another Day' and 'MetropolisiPart 1' that reveal the band's ability to juggle complex arrangements with emotional resonance. The remastered vinyl brings a fresh clarity to these multifaceted compositions, allowing each layer of sound to breathe without losing the album's raw intensity. For anyone looking to delve deeper into Dream Theater's world, this reissue offers a chance to experience it in all its dynamic glory.

Review: Yet another addition to Rhino Records’ Start Your Ear Off Right series hears a reissue of prog metal band Dream Theater’s fifth studio album and first ever concept album. A sequel to the thrillingly titled Metropolis-Part I: The Miracle and the Sleeper, this record builds an intensive recollective sonic theatre out of the mosaic themes of memory and depersonalisation. Themed around the subject of a young man undergoing past life regression therapy, the record is a compelling, initially psychotic howl into the night, and yet it proves an ultimately integrative, recursive experience, adding themes of murderousness and prophetic fate.

Review: Dream Theater's 1997 recording finds the band balancing their complex progressive roots with a newfound accessibility. The intricate instrumental passages and shifting time signatures remain intact, but the melodies lean towards a more streamlined approach, offering a sharper focus on hooks and emotive delivery. There's an underlying tension between technical virtuosity and a desire to connect on a broader level, creating a record that feels as exploratory as it is deliberate. The production captures the weight and precision of their sound while adding a polished edge, making for a deeply layered yet approachable listen.

Review: This brilliant 1980 debut release by the The English Beat set them on course to become one of the most influential groups to emerge from the British Two Tone Ska movement. This album is wall-to-wall bangers and showcases some of their very best tunes, with earworm melodies encasing punchy and irreverent lyrics. Opening cut, 'I Confess' is a case in point: "Just out of spite / I confess I've ruined three lives / Now don't sleep so tight." Musically, The English Beat had style, substance and the ability to baffle and challenge their heroes. Guitarist Dave Wakeling stumped guitar heroes with his "Dad-Odd" guitar tuning. It's said that Pete Townshend phoned Wakeling up and said: "I'm sitting here with David Gilmour and we're having a bit of trouble finding your tuning for 'Save It for Later'." A superb endorsement for The English Beat, who grew up inspired by The Who and Floyd.

Review: When this was recorded at the Record Plant, San Francisco on 1December 15, 1974, Fleetwood Mac were in a state of flux. They were led by singer-songwriters Bob Welch and Christine McVie, but Welch was poised to leave and be replaced by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Welch's stint in the band was brief and the five studio albums he's on are overlooked compared with their imperial phase that was on its way with the next line-up, but he's not to be slept on. The band were laid back but grittier with him in it. He's a slick, cool singer and a mind-blowing guitarist. This live set, which spans early classics and more recent favourites, makes it plain to see just how good he was.

Their second live album was originally released in 1971 and showcases them - in quintessential quintet form - blending rock 'n' roll energy, Bakersfield twang and psychedelic exploration. The album features a diverse setlist with a healthy hit of covers, from the hard-hitting version Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B Goode' and the Stones' 'Not Fade Away' to the heartfelt balladry of 'Me & Bobby McGee' and the cosmic depths of 'The Other One'.

Review: Go To Heaven is a solid record musically, showing the band's musical evolution. The biggest change is the arrival of keyboardist Brent Mydland, who replaced the late Keith Godchaux and introduced a wide array of piano, organ, synth, and vocals, adding a fresh composition style. Produced by Gary Lyons, Go To Heaven merges elements from the band's previous styles, including jazz, prog-rock, and disco, while incorporating modern funk and synth motifs. Drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann provide consistent but reserved rhythms that anchor the album's diverse sounds. The album opens with 'Alabama Getaway,' a short blues rock jam, followed by Mydland's catchy rocker 'Far From Me.' Garcia's 'Althea' stands out with its bluesy slide guitar and buzzing bass by Phil Lesh. Bob Weir's co-written tracks with John Perry Barlow, such as 'Feel Like a Stranger,' bring funk/rock vibes with Mydland's wild analog synth. 'Lost Sailor' and 'Saint of Circumstance' add jazzy elements and upbeat pop, respectively. Mydland's 'Easy to Love You' offers smooth vocals reminiscent of Michael McDonald and the traditional 'Don't Ease Me In' closes the album with a bluesy, country-infused jam.

Review: The Grateful Dead's Reckoning, originally released in 1981, stands out among their many live albums for its completely acoustic set. This album captures the band's exploration of their roots in folk, country-western, and traditional music. Highlights include Garcia's heartfelt rendition of 'Been All Around This World' and the charming 'Monkey and The Engineer,' a nod to their jug band days. Tracks like 'Jack-A-Roe' showcase Garcia's emotive storytelling and guitar skills, while 'Dire Wolf' and 'Cassidy' bring an upbeat vibe and folk rush to the collection. The album closes beautifully with ''Ripple,' featuring Garcia's heart-felt vocals and flawless harmonies. Now reissued by Rhino Records, Reckoning offers a pristine version for both new listeners and longtime fans to enjoy.

Review: This compilation brings together ten standout tracks from Jefferson Airplane's influential descendants, Starship and its predecessor. Opening with the smooth, soulful 'Miracles,' the collection spans the evolution from Airplane's psychedelic roots to Starship's polished rock anthems. Side-1 features the dreamy 'With Your Love,' the uplifting 'Count on Me,' and the classic 'Runaway,' offering a diverse glimpse into the bands' extensive catalog. The side concludes with the quintessential hit 'Jane'. Side-2 is dominated by Starship's most iconic tracks, including the anthemic 'We Built This City' and the rousing 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now,' both embodying the band's 80s rock ethos. The side also includes 'Find Your Way Back' and 'Sara', each track highlighting the band's ability to craft enduring pop-rock hits. The final track, 'It's Not Enough', wraps up the compilation with a dynamic flourish. The enduring legacy of Jefferson Airplane's and Starship can not be denied.

Review: Behold Little Feat's Time Loves A Hero, a 35-minute masterclass in redefiningrock music. This album transcends generations, proving that if your parents were right about rock music being great in their days. Little Feat's sixth studio effort effortlessly blends New Orleans blues, urban funk, and jazz fusion without losing its signature southern rock swagger. Kicking off with the assertive funk of 'Hi Roller,' the band showcases complex keyboard lines and intricate drum work. The standout track, 'Day at the Dog Races,' is a cosmic odyssey of southern rock grooves and wild jazz fusion. Tracks like 'Old Folks Boogie' balance experimental sounds with playful, tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Little Feat's ability to merge eclectic song structures with muscular musicality makes this album timeless. Thanks to Rhino Records, this classic is now reissued on vinyl, inviting a new generation to discover the magic of Little Feat.

Review: Madonna's fourth studio album was, and remains her most explicit artistic statement. Though aiming for a "serious" sound, the album dazzled with a kaleidoscope of pop styles from the funk of 'Express Yourself' and 'Keep It Together' to the haunting 'Oh Father' and the alluring and still classic track. Praised for its songcraft as well as for pushing so many bundlers, Like a Prayer remains Madonna's most consistent album and though it was released 35 years ago, it still resonates. Over 15 million copies were sold in the years after release and the album produced six singles, spawned four top ten hits and now gets reissued as a special Silver Edition to celebrate 40 years of her groundbreaking career.

Review: Ministry's The Land of Rape and Honey is a pivotal release in both the band's discography and the evolution of industrial music. This genre-defining album marked their shift from synthpop to industrial metal, characterised by distorted guitars, pounding beats, and aggressive, sample-rich compositions. The deluxe edition enhances this landmark with iconic tracks like 'Stigmata', 'The Missing;, and the haunting title track, along with exclusive remixes and extended cuts. Tracks like 'The Missing' and 'Deity' highlight the album's metal edge, blending thrash aggression with industrial elements. 'Golden Dawn' introduces a dark, ritualistic tone with samples from occult sources, showcasing Ministry's skill in merging industrial and post-industrial aesthetics. Songs like 'Destruction' and 'Hizbollah' expand the sonic palette with chaotic percussion and Middle Eastern influences. The title track, despite its controversial samples, reinforces the band's anti-fascist stance with its militaristic atmosphere. Closing with 'Abortive', the album offers a reflective end to its intense journey. The Land of Rape and Honey stands as a crucial bridge between early industrial soundscapes and the metal-influenced industrial of the 90s.

Review: The 2022 remix of The Monkees' Headquarters revisits the pivotal album where the band seized creative control, marking a milestone in their musical journey. Produced by Chip Douglas, Headquarters captures Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones and Peter Tork stepping beyond their TV personas and establishing themselves as a real band. Featuring remixed tracks from the original multitracks, the release restores the album's original pitch while expanding its stereo separation. Highlights include Nesmith's jangle-pop gem 'You Told Me', Dolenz's inventive 'Randy Scouse Git', and the Boyce & Hart-penned 'I'll Spend My Life with You'. This edition also unearths gems like Neil Diamond's 'A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You' alongside bonus tracks, alternate takes, and insightful studio chatter. Complete with a 28-page booklet this set illuminates The Monkees' creative revolt, delivering a fascinating glimpse into the band's groundbreaking rise to artistic autonomy.

Review: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie stands as Alanis Morissette's most intriguing album. Following the massive success of Jagged Little Pill, which became the tentth best-selling album of all time, Morissette faced immense pressure to replicate its style, but Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie landed like an autumn leafilargely unnoticed but deeply affecting. The album is a complex collection, often pulling Morissette in various directions, making it less cohesive. Morissette's voice remains its strongest feature, resonant and more mature than on her previous work and tracks like 'Baba', with its pre-nu-metal fury, and 'That I Would Be Good,' a heartfelt ballad, showcase her considerable range. 'Thank U' and 'UR' hint at the direction of her next album, while 'Would Not Come' explores trip-hop influences. Morissette's most compelling work and definitely worthy of rediscovery.

Released initially in 1994, the album is a cornerstone of East Coast hip-hop and cemented Biggie Smalls as a pivotal figure in the genre. This special edition breathes new life into classic tracks like 'Juicy,' 'Big Poppa,' and 'One More Chance,' thanks to meticulous remastering that enhances the raw energy and lyrical brilliance of Biggie's original recording. This album leads the way with the gritty sound of 90s hip-hop. The packaging is equally impressive, featuring updated artwork and liner notes that provide fresh insights into the making of the album and its impact on music culture. Flaunting two of Jane's' founding members, Porno went on to forge a bombastic alternative rock sound that defined the 90s. This is the band's first ever greatest hits collection, coinciding with a nascent world tour drive and reuniting in 2024. Pressed on multicoloured vinyl and with brand new art, the record also includes a brand new remix of 'Pets' by Daniel Avery, and three brand new recordings, 'Fingernail,' 'Little Me' and 'Agua'.

Review: Are The Ramones now best known for being on t-shirts worn by people who have never heard the band? Maybe. But either way, Too Tough To Die, which was released 40 years ago, is often seen as a return to form. Really, it deserves a more radical categorisation. Released in the mid-1980s, the album felt out of step with the era, not in a negative way, but in how it captured the contradictions of its time. Made without a clear direction, its incongruity became its defining feature. As Joey Ramone noted in a 1988 interview, "Around '84, the world was changing drastically... Things were getting scary. So, our songs started changing." This shift in tone marked a new chapter in their musical evolution.

Originally released in 1987, it captures their raw spirit and is packed with gritty rock licks and infectious melodies.
