Aside from Coldcut's incredible 'Journeys By DJ' mix, we can think of few mix albums that have been quite as celebrated as Soulwax's 2002 outing as 2ManyDJs, 'As Heard on Radio Soulwax Part 2'. While of its time in terms of some of the track selections - it was the era of fuzzy electro-house and electroclash - the album's genius lies in its' breathlessly brilliant eclecticism and the no-holds-barred, party-starting insanity that marked out the Belgian duo's DJ sets at the time. Out of print for many years but now back in stores in limited quantities to mark its 20th birthday, the mix remains a peerless advert for creative DJing, with the Dewaele brothers giddily mashing together acapellas, tracks, grooves and song snippets in a breathlessly brilliant, endlessly entertaining way. If you missed it first time around, you need this edition in your life.

Review: In recent months, PIAS has re-released numerous albums from Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, a cult post-hardcore band that found fame by developing their own distinctive brand of "doom-ridden jazz music". The latest album to get the reissue treatment is 2005's Geisterfaust. It originally appeared three years after Black Earth, a macabre and unsettling full-length that remains their most celebrated work. The five epic tracks that make up Geisterfaust are a little lighter in tone, though still thoroughly absorbing and cloaked in the band's usual hazy atmospheres. At times the music tends towards the melancholic, with 20-minute opener "Zeigefinger" offering a near perfect blend of slowly evolving ambient jazz motifs and foreboding drum hits.

Review: It's hard not to feel a sense of empathy after about a minute of Alice Boman's intimate and heartfelt debut, "Dream On". "Wish We Had More Time", the sombre and wistful opening track, marks this out as the kind of album that tells us all the heartache, and tears of the last decade are likely to be just as pronounced in this one. Glittering keys atop plodding melody reminding listeners that there's still beauty in and among the pain. Following with the choral "Heart On Fire" you may think the mood has switched to a more positive outlook. With lines like "I wish we'd never met" front and centre. Which is where the genius here becomes apparent. Love songs in the most honest sense - disempowering, terrifying, desperate, uncertain and, ultimately, devastating when threads unravel. Backed with scores that suck you in like lullabies, their depth difficult to countenance, you've got yourself something special.

Review: Baxter Dury, son of legendary cockney rebel Ian, first started writing music and moving out from his father's shadow fifteen years ago. Blessed with his old man's bone-dry wit and the instantly recognizable voice, he's been quietly and unabashedly asserting his individuality ever since, bringing us to his fifth full-length, 'Prince Of Tears'. In a similar fashion to 2014's 'It's A Pleasure', Dury explores the dark underbelly beneath a sun-drenched sound, but this time framing the murky sleaze with a little sharper focus. The album opens with 'Miami', setting a threatening and skulking tone that's upheld on tracks such as 'Porcelain', 'Letterbomb' and 'August'. Contributing vocalists provide some contrast, with Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods mirroring Dury's sharp spoken word on 'Almond Milk', while Rose Elinor Dougall provides warm comforting refrains throughout. Baxter's nonchalance is infectious as he ambles into his fifth release, and 'Prince Of Tears finds him at his most complete, convincing and confident to date.

Review: In many ways the bare truths spoken-sung by world-weary MC and producer Ghostpoet may not be the best thing to land late-April 2020. His fifth long form offers up more anxious calls to arms, this time on issues including far right politics and passports, painting a particularly bleak picture of the world at a time when we are already struggling to stay positive. But then perhaps that's why we really do need the lackadaisical lyrical delivery, pared back scores and melancholic moodiness of this two-time Mercury nominee. Still willing to explore themes that are often uncomfortable and regularly personal, still making heavy beats that sound deceptively easygoing, and still creating an atmosphere that's somewhere between dark UK hip hop and menacingly hypnotic trip hop. Here's proof the formula is still a breeding ground for boxfresh tunes.

Review: On her sixth album as Joan As Police Woman, Joan Wasser dives into deeper and darker waters than on her previous work. 'Damned Devotion' draws the listener in close with Wasser's heartfelt sentiments of romantic honesty and intimacy to powerful effect, vocally balancing frailty and strength on a knife-edge in a way that continues to assert her strength as a vocalist and performer. Her ambient melting pot of R'n'B, beats, dimly lit atmospherics, soulful harmonies, eerie samples and crunching riffs strikes perfect balances at every turn, showing a depth of songwriting full of a tension that feels calmly restrained at one moment and threateningly coiled in the next. It's these levels of tension and atmosphere coupled with Wasser's instrumental and vocal breadth that make 'Damned Devotion' a real gem, an album whose many virtues become ever more apparent with every listen.

Review: This shoegaze supergroup (featuring members of Mogwai, Slowdive and Editors) turned heads with their debut of last year, proving to be rather more than the sum of their parts, yet they've surmounted expectations here by producing something if anything even more special. Whilst the title of this new work might suggest a more ornately arranged and overblown variant on the shimmering guitar overload of their earlier incarnation, 'Orchestral Variations' triumphs by stripping these songs back to their bare essence, arriving at an emotional resonance and wintry melancholia that is a wonder to behold.

Review: Despite her obvious chart-bothering credentials, former Moloko chanteuse Roisin Murphy has tended towards the experimental end of pop on her solo albums. Hairless Toys, her first full-length for eight years, continues this trend, delivering a range of woozy, fluid and unusual tracks that combine strong lyrics and vocals with catchy hooks and a variety of musical backdrops that slyly make reference to everything from jazz, disco and Italo to off-kilter electronica, skittering deep house and Americana. It's a truly unique combination, but one in keeping with the exiled Irish singer's curiously eclectic career. More importantly, Hairless Toys may be her strongest solo set to date.

Review: Once again using an ambitious conceptual framework to house a record which draws on historical texts and multimedia sources alongside their widescreen melange of post-rock, prog, dance and ambient stylings, 'Every Valley' deals with the Welsh mining industry and its trials and travails in the last half of the twentieth century. A project as mighty as the industry it chronicles, it resonates with emotive heft and atmospheric power whilst being careful not to overly romanticise its subject matter - this is fundamentally a deeply melancholic album, chronicling the slow demise of a way of life with spirit, clarity and sensitivity, not to mention musical invention.

Review: Will Holland is Quantic and with this project he has explored myriad different musical worlds, has traversed many different areas, most notably immersing himself in many aspects of Latin American music culture, often through collaboration. He's switched it up for this new record after first starting out with some experiments that soon turned into a love letter to disco which has long been a powerful emotional tool. He brings his own sense of percussive energy to the genre and has again worked with an array of talented mates including Connie Constance and Rationale plus vocalist Andreya Triana.

Review: Belgica is a new movie about two Belgian brothers who run a club of the same name in Ghent. Who better to provide the soundtrack, then, than two Belgian brothers who reside in Ghent. Despite the myriad band names name-checked in the track list (each of whom is seen or heard performing in the film), each of the 16 tracks was written and produced by Soulwax, sometimes in association with guest musicians and actors. It's a neat trick, and one that leads to an impressively eclectic mixture of songs and styles, from post-punk era industrial dub and jangly West-coast indie, to minimal wave, krautrock, dub disco and frazzled post-boogie synth-pop.
