Review: Are there many mixes as seminal as this one? When Soulwax adopted their 2 Many DJs alias for the landmark As Heard On Radio Soulwax series, they heralded a new era of genre-hopping, headsy blending that was fun and fearless in equal measure. It's absolutely of its time, capturing the electroclash zeitgeist and throwing in crowd-pleasing pop nous without diluting the product, and quite simply Pt 2 is one of the best party sets you're ever likely to hear. Released in 2002 and sounding as fresh and inspired as it did 20 years ago, this is an essential item for anyone who takes the art of the mash-up seriously.

Review: This warm and summery new offering from Australian siblings Angus & Julia must be ironically titled. 'Snow', the self-produced follow-up to their acclaimed 2014 album continues in a similar vein of breezy folk & pop, but with new found confidence. This is perhaps the effect of Rick Rubin's advice to them to write together as a duo, with sections of swapping verses, lyrical call and response, and vocal contrasts showing there's no sibling rivalry going on here. There are a few slow-burners that'll take a little while to sink in here, but overall this is another polished set from the duo, where each deceptively catchy track leans pleasantly into the next.

Review: The duo of Angus & Julia Stone share their sixth full-length album, Cape Forestier. A strikingly poignant and textured set of new recordings, the new LP immediately draws listeners into the simple and endearing vision of Angus and Julia Stone's world; this is a cloaked, atmopsheric Aussie folk album that flaunts the couple's talents in utmost equal measure. Cape Forestier is also a self-described exercise in recognising "how humans choose to treat each other, love each other, and make promises to build something beautiful together." By that, they mean marriage: Cape Forestier's ear for sentiment knows few bounds, with stripped-back, bridal-gowned romances like 'The Wedding Song' commanding an adept ear for candid space and finger-plucking nostalgisms.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Been there, done that, got remnants of a t-shirt. Anna of the North has obviously lived. Or at least that's the impression from "Dream Girl", an album that kicks, grooves, lolls and soothes in equal measure. Clearly the product of some very real experiences, and that's just the instrumentals. It's a record that wears everything on sleeve, calling on influences and styles that don't always find themselves centre stage when it comes to matters of the heart. There's more than a hint of hip hop on "Used To Be", the jazz inflections are crystal clear on "Lonely Life", R&B nuances spread across "When R U Coming Home". Themes range from challenges faced after finding real freedom - lack of direction and deep questioning of purpose - to problems that come with co-dependence and communication. Or lack thereof. Whatever relationship inspired this wasn't the simplest, but the things we learn from rarely are.

Review: Archive's Controlling Crowds has been reissued as a deluxe box set, celebrating their evolution while embracing their roots in trip-hop. This set includes the remastered Controlling Crowds I-III and IV, along with a bonus LP featuring seven previously unreleased tracks. The package is enriched by a 24-page booklet filled with extensive notes, unseen photos and contemporary band interviews. The album marked a significant return for the band, melding their classic trip hoppy sound with elements of alternative rock and progressive influences. While the electronic ambiance prevails, tracks like 'Bullets', 'Quiet Time' and 'Razed To The Ground' evoke nostalgia for their early work, showcasing the return of vocalist Rosko John. Archive skillfully navigated through genres, infusing jazzy undertones and soulful melodies, particularly evident in 'Collapse/Collide'. Despite their stylistic shifts over the years, Controlling Crowds felt both accessible and cohesive, representing a harmonious blend of their past and present. The album proved that Archive could still captivate audiences with their intricate soundscapes, reinforcing its status as some of their best work.

Review: Controlling Crowds I-III, originally released in 2009, is an expansive concept album by Archive that delves into themes of control, power, and manipulation. This reissue sees the whole album get a fresh remastering job and marks its first release on double vinyl so is a great way to experience the band's signature fusion of cinematic electronica and rock. With its intense atmosphere and thought-provoking lyrics, the album explores human vulnerability and societal influence and is one of Archive's most ambitious works.

Review: Sunshine Hit Me is the debut album from the British band The Bees. A testament to summery jovialty and DIY ingenuity, the album is as raw and earthen as it is soulful, with the band at the time only made up of founding members Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher, who wrote, performed and recorded the album alone using a home studio in Butler's parents' garden on the Isle Of Wight. Don't be confused by the LP's normative categorisation as "indie rock"; deft listeners can hear everything from reggae to neo-soul in this one, flaunting the pair's impressive musical education going into its making.

Review: Finally being repressed after almost two decades of utterly absurd mark-ups on Discogs, and arriving just in time for their Crystal Palace Park legacy show this summer, A Weekend In The City served as the seminal sophomore full-length from homegrown post-punk heroes Bloc Party. Originally released in 2007 as follow up to their still much adored 2005 debut LP Silent Alarm, the initially misunderstood successor exuded a rectifying of every gripe primary songwriter Kele Okereke had with the band's first attempt. While switching out lyrical opaqueness for specificity and clarity led to far darker, more vulnerable and personal subject matter unpacking drug abuse, failed relationships, grief and the faux nature of the industry they were now immersed in, the band would also sonically stray from the polished landfill indie style that began to clog airways and festival stages, and begin to embrace elements of art rock, synthpop and electro-punk. These experiments would ultimately alter the course of their career trajectory, and while legions will continue to argue that Bloc Party peaked with their debut, you'll always find an equal number of voices on the other side of the pulpit who insist that once the training wheels were removed, A Weekend In The City was the sound of a band truly discovering themselves and their untapped potential.

Review: Arriving only one year after their seminal sophomore effort A Weekend In The City, 2008 saw London post-punk auteurs Bloc Party pursue the more electronic-leaning aspects of their preceding work with utter abandon and disregard for those bemoaning a return to the guitar-based indie rock of Silent Alarm. Utilising a plethora of synths, loop stations and programmed drum machines, the subdued dance-punk of Intimacy is easily the band's most debatable album from their original run, with some praising their new sonic path while naysayers accused the members of overzealously rushing into their third full-length. Lyrically sequenced as a concept album based around the demise of a relationship in the city of London, complete with allusions to "Sitting in Soho trying to stay drunk", or the sobering, "When we started this it was paradise, not just Bethnal Green"; primary songwriter Kele Okereke continued to favour specificity and narrative clarity over the vague metaphors of his earlier writing, crafting an earnest, delicate, bombastic, seething and sincere collection of glitching trip-hop, angular post-punk and euphoric yet stoic synthwave. Long out of print, this overdue reissue comes complete with the two original deluxe edition bonus tracks 'Letter To My Son', and, 'Your Visits Are Getting Shorter', as well as the 2009 stand-alone single 'One More Chance'.

Review: Nearly, twenty years after its release, Silent Alarm remains a landmark debut that propelled Bloc Party to the forefront of British indie rock. When it first arrived, it felt like a shockwave, redefining expectations for the genre with its blend of jittery rhythms, angular guitars, and emotional intensity. Tracks like 'Like Eating Glass' explode with urgency, as Kele Okereke's desperate vocals drive home the album's sense of alienation and tension. While Bloc Party's influences were once compared to post-punk pioneers like Gang of Four, by Silent Alarm, they had carved out their own space. Songs like 'Pioneers' and the haunting 'Price of Gas' blend atmospheric textures with raw energy, creating an eerie yet electrifying soundscape. The ghostly reworking of 'She's Hearing Voices' shows the band's skill in turning their earlier work into something richer and more unsettling. 'Compliments', evokes a dark, Depeche Mode-inspired mood that lingers long after the music ends. Even two decades later, Silent Alarm stands as a testament to Bloc Party's innovation and enduring influence.

Review: The criminally underrated and often overlooked fourth full-length from post/dance-punk darlings Bloc Party marked the end of their definitive era, as it would be the final album to feature original bassist Gordon Moakes and drummer Matt Tong before creative differences would see them both vacate their positions. Originally released in 2012, four years on from 2008's electronically based Intimacy and two years following primary songwriter Kele Okereke's solo garage-house The Boxer LP; the material on Four harks back to a joke once made in an interview that each album would cater to a specific member's influences. Mixing the indie post-punk of Silent Alarm, the art rock grandeur of A Weekend In The City, and the glitchy dance-punk of the aforementioned Intimacy; what makes Four such a powerful statement is the sheer embracing of their differing forms. From the indie-pop lead single 'Octopus', to the Smashing Pumpkins indebted 90s alt rock triumph of 'Kettling', to the bluegrass-turned-hardcore banger 'Coliseum', there's no denying the swansong quality the project has retrospectively garnered when assessing the fearless and purposeful lack of direction or cohesion throughout. Repressed to vinyl along with the rest of the band's far-too-long out-of-print catalogue, this reissue also comes complete with 2013's The Nextwave Sessions EP; the final recorded output from the OG lineup.

Review: Bohren and Der Club of Gore has always been one of Germany's most intriguing and out there bands - a group rooted in grindcore and doom metal whose hard-to-pigeonhole output draws on a myriad of intriguing influences outside those intense styles. "Patchouli Blue", their tenth studio set since forming in 1992, is another moody and atmospheric gem: a challenging and experimental set that pits angst-ridden guitar textures against hallucinatory, David Lynch style cinematic sounds, hypnotic electronics and smoky, off-kilter jazz expressions. It's not a great departure from their previous albums, but when your sound is so distinctive - and inspired for that matter - why tear up the (Patchouli) blueprint?

Review: In recent months, PIAS has re-released numerous albums from Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, a cult post-hardcore band that found fame by developing their own distinctive brand of "doom-ridden jazz music". The latest album to get the reissue treatment is 2005's Geisterfaust. It originally appeared three years after Black Earth, a macabre and unsettling full-length that remains their most celebrated work. The five epic tracks that make up Geisterfaust are a little lighter in tone, though still thoroughly absorbing and cloaked in the band's usual hazy atmospheres. At times the music tends towards the melancholic, with 20-minute opener "Zeigefinger" offering a near perfect blend of slowly evolving ambient jazz motifs and foreboding drum hits.

Review: It's hard not to feel a sense of empathy after about a minute of Alice Boman's intimate and heartfelt debut, "Dream On". "Wish We Had More Time", the sombre and wistful opening track, marks this out as the kind of album that tells us all the heartache, and tears of the last decade are likely to be just as pronounced in this one. Glittering keys atop plodding melody reminding listeners that there's still beauty in and among the pain. Following with the choral "Heart On Fire" you may think the mood has switched to a more positive outlook. With lines like "I wish we'd never met" front and centre. Which is where the genius here becomes apparent. Love songs in the most honest sense - disempowering, terrifying, desperate, uncertain and, ultimately, devastating when threads unravel. Backed with scores that suck you in like lullabies, their depth difficult to countenance, you've got yourself something special.
