Review: Interpol's seventh album sees the long-standing NYC indie rock giants teaming up with the legendary production team of Flood and Alan Moulder for a trip into sadness, darkness and introspection. For devoted fans of the band, those themes should ring true and spell out another record to be cherished for those downcast days. Daniel Kessler's serpentine guitar work cuts an imposing, but ultimately graceful figure on 'Into The Night', while Samuel Fograino's propulsive drumming continues to explore meters beyond linear motorik drive and Paul Bank once more speaks from the deepest reaches of his soul.

Review: Interpol are marking the 20th anniversary of their acclaimed sophomore album Antics with a special edition release. Originally launched in September 2004, Antics solidified the band's influence in the post-punk revival scene with unforgettable tracks like 'Slow Hands', 'Evil' and 'C'mere'. Antics represents the band's mature sound, blending dark, atmospheric elements with Paul Banks' brooding vocals. It maintained the distinct essence of their debut, Turn On The Bright Lights, while introducing a more refined, pop-leaning structure. Antics skillfully avoids the sophomore slump by not attempting to recreate their debut's shadowy allure. Instead, it embraces a lighter, more direct sound while retaining their trademark post-punk edge. The album has a pop-leaning confidence, driven by crisp guitars and more prominent vocals from Paul Banks. The album's shift toward a collection of singles, rather than a cohesive narrative, allows each track to stand out. With Antics, Interpol offers a more accessible yet still brooding evolution, confirming their place in modern rock.

Review: Mdou Moctar is a Tuareg, Niger musician best known for his personal sound; he calls it Tuareg guitar music, drawing on styles like takamba and assouf. His music was originally circulated not via the internet, but rather an informal trade network of memory sticks and mobile phones in the Sahel region of North Africa. This musical scarcity captured the imagination of the net-based musical audience at large, following Moctar's formation of a four-piece band and emergent touring schedule aided by motorcycle, not to mention his demo music being leaked on a compilation documenting the cellphone based music of the Sahel in the early 2010s. 'Niger EP. Vol. 2' tops up the artist's latest EP series, laying down a further four entrancingly electric songs recorded at various weddings, picnics and house concerts.

Review: Audibly energised by their global tour following the drop of 2021's breakout record 'Afrique Victime', Mdou Moctar and band return with an album of psychedelic assouf centring around themes of global unrest. Moctar's guitar sounds more frazzled and warm than ever, and the ever-cleaner production only serves to highlight the dazzling musicianship of his band. Quickly amassing an impressive and diverse discography of Tuareg rock heaters, Mdou Moctar further cements his reputation as the Nigerien Hendrix.

Review: The Mdou Moctar mixtape series started in 2021. It is music made from sounds captured in the back of a van while on tour including field recordings, cell phone voice memos, interview clips, conversations and more. The Niger EPs now continue on that theme and look closely at the roots of the band, which lay in long bus rides across West Africa sitting next to people and talking about music. As such the music here is solely from recordings in Mdou Moctar's home country of Niger between 2017 and 2020 when the band was at weddings, picnics, rehearsals, and impromptu house concerts.

Review: From their low-key discovery through the Sahel Sounds label via a leap to Third Man and now on to Matador, the rise and rise of Mdou Moctar has been a marvel to behold, albeit not exactly surprising. Led by Mahamadou Souleymane but now framed as a quartet, their Tuareg desert blues sound has a sharper bite than similarly popular acts like Tinariwen which responds very well to a bigger production. Long time fans fear not, the spark of Souleymayne's songwriting and playing is intact, but there's a vibrancy to tracks like 'Imouhar' and 'Funeral For Justice' as they play with dynamics and tension which bring an exciting new dimension to desert blues.

Review: Nigerian singer, songwriter, and guitar legend, Mdou Moctar should need no introduction if you keep an ear to the ground of sub-Saharan African music. Then again, the vague region covers a vast area - land in all four hemispheres and around 15% of the Earth's walkable surface. So you could be forgiven for missing out on an individual artist if, for example, you weren't already looking for them specifically. Or relied on Western culture media for tips on what to hear next. That said, problematically tunnel-visioned as the North Atlantic-hegemony of commentators can be, Moctar has been something of a darling to UK, European and US musos for a while now. On Tears of Injustice he presents a convincing case for their continued adoration. A master of Tuareg, a style of music also known as desert blues, it's an intoxicating sound that easily transports and invokes, even if the predominantly Tamasheq language he sings in remains a mystery - arguably another factor in the powerful mythology surrounding his legacy.

Review: Mdou Moctar's reimagining of his work presents a powerful counterpoint to the blistering original. Recorded in the wake of a political crisis that left the band stranded in the US, this acoustic version strips back the aggression, replacing it with raw grief. The band, recording in Brooklyn's Bunker Studio, brings a new, meditative quality to the music, with the songs remaining heavy but haunting in their unamplified form. The standout 'Imouhar' takes shape through two rapid-fire passes, seamlessly merged into one hypnotic take. Where the original album burned with anger, this version captures the sadness and sorrow of a nation caught in perpetual turmoil.

Review: You'll probably struggle to find an album that opens with two more contrasting tracks than the fifth long form effort from Mike Hadreas. Re-teaming with GRAMMY-nominated production talent Blake Mills, with the pair inviting a host of guest collaborators to help on this record (Jim Keltner, Pino Palladino to name but two), the record begins with the peaceful, reflective and hymn-like 'Whole Life', a classic slice of rock croonerdom, before the scuzzy guitars of 'Describe' drop in like juggernauts. Elsewhere, you have the proto-pop of 'On The Floor', a track heyday Cyndi Lauper would have been happy to call her own, and the haunting slow dance of 'One More Try', offering yet more shades of grey which, combined, create a complete picture of a man, or indeed men, in the 21st Century. Rebellious, tender, caring, carefree and deeply complex. Definitely one that will keep you exploring long after first pressing play.

Review: The work of Mike Hadreas has divided opinion up until this point, with observers being equally awestruck by his ornate and grandiose pop and slightly overwhelmed by it - however, 'No Shape' would appear to be the point at which all must acknowledge that this maverick is now operating at the absolute peak of his powers, and sculpting works of cinematic splendour that balance out tenderness of delivery and gloriously widescreen sweep. Lush orchestration marries with Hadreas' emotionally engaging croon and endlessly inventive arrangements to arrive at something both touching and transcendent.

Review: Too Bright, released in 2014, marks a daring evolution for Perfume Genius, the moniker of Seattle's Mike Hadreas. Departing from the sparse, piano-driven melodies of his earlier work, this album dives into raw, unfiltered emotion and experimentation. Hadreas channels a simmering rage that has been growing since childhood, resulting in an album that is both audacious and quixotic. Collaborating with Adrian Utley of Portishead and featuring John Parish, Too Bright navigates a transformative path reminiscent of Kate Bush's The Dreaming or Scott Walker's Tilt. It balances pure songwriting with bold, avant-garde explorations. The album's soundscape shifts from delicate and introspective to powerful and defiant, reflecting Hadreas' internal struggle and emerging confidence. Tracks like 'Queen' are full of newfound boldness, combining anthemic choruses with provocative lyrics, while others maintain a haunting beauty. Too Bright is a standout in Hadreas' discography and is a pivotal moment of his artistic growth. Ten years on, it still pushes boundaries and confronts personal demons, solidifying it's place as a visionary album in contemporary music.

Review: Matador Records top up their ongoing catalogue series Revisionist History - a series of reissues of the label's most esteemed albums, which "people tend to presume is our cheeky way of re-writing Matador's storied past to make it even more (ahem) storied" - with a new version of The New Romance by Pretty Girls Make Graves. Formed in Seattle in 2001, PGMG came together in the fallout of the breakup of a dozen other Seattle scene bands, and amounted to an intelligent and distinctively electric take on the post-punk they knew and loved. The second LP to their debut Good Health, The New Romance was anthemic in comparison to their debut's relative rawness, working in crossrhythmic guitar and synth arpeggios touching on minimalism, which formed a neat counterpart to the ostensibly screamy punk statement heard throughout.

Review: Queens of the Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme has had some tough time sin the run up to this one - his private life has made it to the music press pages and he has had tough custodial battles with ex-wives, as well as his own cancer diagnosis and losing some people close to him, including former Queens man Mark Lanegan. All that is channeled into this record which is unforgiving and at times surprisingly edgy place to be. Even in the sonically softer moments, for example 'Straight Jacket Fitting', there's a brooding moodiness recalling the heyday of unplugged grunge.

Review: It's been a rough old ride leading up to In Times New Roman for Queens of the Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme. Private life very much splashed across the front pages (of the music press, at least) amid custodial battles with ex-wives, cancer diagnoses and surgery, the loss of several close friends, including former Queens and latterly solo legend Mark Lanegan. As such we can understand why this latest album is an unforgiving and at times surprisingly edgy place to be.
It's been a while since the Seattle, Washington hard rockers allowed themselves to go this hard, and reveal so much about themselves. For the most part, In Times is their heaviest sounding outing in more than 15 years, essentially since Era Vulgaris dropped. Even in the sonically softer moments, for example 'Straight Jacket Fitting', there's a brooding moodiness recalling the heyday of unplugged grunge. Simply put, they clearly had a lot that needed to be let out, and that's exactly what they've done.

Review: If anybody thought QOTSA's previous offering '...Like Clockwork' indicated a band trying out new ideas, they're making far greater leaps this time around. Die-hard fans might be a little confused by the enlistment of Mark Ronson as the album's producer, perhaps even more so by the strong influence on Josh Homme of Ronson's ubiquitous 2014 hit 'Uptown Funk'. The outcome of this surprising collaboration proves to be a heady blend of the band's usual desert-rock sleaze and a crisp, infectious and floor-filling sound. This is an album to move to, and this new direction of dancefloor focus makes the blistering fuzzbox riffs and contortion-inducing solos sound even more cool and confident than ever.

Review: The band's self-titled debut in 1998 showcased Josh Homme's evolving sound, marrying stoner-rock roots with melodic hooks and quirky guitar work. Tracks like 'Regular John' and 'Avon' demonstrate Homme's emergence as a distinct vocalist, while bonus tracks like 'The Bronze' and 'Spiders and Vinegaroons' seamlessly integrate into the album's sequence, enhancing the overall listening experience. This remastered reissue provides a more accurate reflection of Queens of the Stone Age's evolution from their Desert Sessions experiments to their later best-selling albums. While their debut may not have foretold their platinum future, it remains a vital document of the band's early sound and a testament to their enduring influence on the rock landscape.

Review: Two years on from her much-loved album Valentine in 2012, Snail Mai makes a welcome return with this lovely new EP, Valentine Demons. All four of these tracks are intimate affairs with closely mixed, often whispered vocals. Every single finger movement on the strings can be heard which brings each one to life. Aside from one never before heard tick 'Easy Thing' these are demo recordings made in the lead-up to that last album using just a minilogue synth, interface, mic, and guitar in her parents' house in Maryland. Their rawness and immediacy makes them at least as good as the final products on the album, if not better.

Review: Celebrating the tenth anniversary of Spoon's eighth album, Matador Records is reissuing They Want My Soul as the Deluxe More Soul Edition. This expanded version not only includes the original ten tracksifeaturing fan favorites like 'Inside Out,' 'Do You,' and 'Rent I Pay'ibut also adds 11 demos and alternate versions, nearly all previously unreleased. This reissue underscores the album's significant place in Spoon's consistently stellar catalog and offers a rare peek into their creative process during a pivotal moment. After 2010's Transference, Spoon found themselves drained from years of relentless touring and recording. Frontman Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno sought a much-needed break, leading to side projects that reignited their creative energies. When they reconvened in 2013, they teamed up with producers Joe Chiccarelli and Dave Fridmann, whose distinct styles brought new textures to the album. The result was Spoon's most polished and vibrant work to date, blending Daniel's sharp lyricism with Fridmann's maximalist tendencies. Highlights of the deluxe edition include Daniel's solo piano rendition of 'Inside Out' and early demos that reveal the evolution of tracks like 'Do You' and the title song. These rough cuts showcase Daniel's relentless pursuit of lyrical perfection, offering a fresh perspective on an album that has only grown in stature over the years.

Review: Ten years on from its original release, Matador are revisiting Kurt Vile's masterful Wakin On A Pretty Daze album with a cheery yellow pressing. As Vile's fifth album, it came in the wake of his breakthrough LP Smoke Ring For My Halo and found near-unanimous acclaim, hailed as the perfect balance of open, impulsive songwriting and focus, with Vile playing to his strengths and creating some beautiful songs in the process. 'Wakin On A Pretty Day' proves you can write a ten-minute tune and not lose your way, if you have the right things to say.

Review: Adorning his long hair on the cover, Kurt Vile returns with his seventh solo album Bottle It In which has the charm of a rare, golden find inside of a dusty Seattle record store. At 13 tracks long, interestingly enough three clock in at an epic 10 minutes long. It's an album that graces various themes of dark psyche within dreamy soundscapes of crackles and feedback underneath an ensemble of roomy drums, finger-picking guitars and other folky sentimentalities. There's mellifluous flow to the record, with the hip lyrical content of "Cold Was The Wind" a highlight and stand out alongside the washed out beach blues of "Skinny Mini" and unique album closer "(Bottle Back)".

Review: This Stupid World is an album from Yo La Tenga that sounds more live than anything the band has done for a decade. It's their first new record in five years and was created top to bottom by the band itself, building on their strong foundations yet bringing plenty of fresh new ideas. All three band members are going for it throughout almost every moment of every track, so it has an urgent, of-the-moment feel that is immediately impactful. It comes on limited transparent blue vinyl - a great record for indie fans whether or not they are familiar with this band.
