Review: Lewis' gentle and bewitching L'Amour, which came complete with a bizarre backstory involving the disappearance of the blonde-haired would-be-matinee-idol on its sleeve, was one of the surprise delights of the year. Yet the release of the hitherto unsuspected follow-up Romantic Times, which was originally recorded in 1985, only adds to the mystique surrounding this off-kilter auteur. The abstract croon and expressionistic mood may remain, yet the pastel shades and beachside calm of his earlier effort are gone, replaced by brooding atmosphere and vocals that betray a troubled soul beneath the luxurious veneer. Residing somewhere between lounge lizard thrills and outsider art chills, Romantic Times is a portrait of a true one-off.

Review: Light In The Attic brush dust off the crates once again, this time lifting Karen Dalton's 1971 classic yet mysterious country LP 'In My Own Time' out from the murk. The Oklahoma singer-songwriter's debut is technically a country-folk-blues covers album, but Dalton's signature vocal style and distinct manner of banjo playing renders each song unique. In time with its 50th Anniversary, this new and remastered LP version contains unseen photos, liner notes and other contributions from artists influenced by her such as Nick Cave and Devendra Banhart

Review: Reissued again (following an initial 2009 run) via Light In The Attic, It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You The Best is the debut album by American folk blues musician Karen Dalton, originally released in 1969 by Capitol Records. The Native American singer made her mark on the seventies folk scene through a distinctly yearning sound, evoked through an unmistakable, tremolo'ing alto. On the album, her voice, exemplary of this, effortlessly pokes out from each quiet miasma of guitar, a template soon to be fleshed out by latter-day chart-toppers such as Lacy J. Dalton (whose name is a tribute) and Bob Dylan. Covering classics by Lead Belly, Fred Neil, and Tim Hardin, this is tender, one-of-a-kind country folk, with this edition coming as an all-analog version featuring remastered audio from the original Capitol masters.

Review: With her first album in 1973, Betty Davis arrived like a stick of TNT sizzling her fuse right down and ready to blow the funk scene wide open. A woman singing, writing, recording and producing her music herself, the world wasn't ready for her, and on this debut album you can hear how fully-formed and charismatic she was even at her rawest. Backed by her band Funk House, she lays it down any way she pleases, which more often than not is strongly seductive. Light In The Attic's dedicated reissue series is shining a light back on Davis' landmark run of records and this is without a doubt one of the best of the bunch.

Review: Betty Davis may have had had an unjustly short run in the public eye when she recorded her seminal 70s funk albums, but she left a lasting impact. As a potent creative force she wrote, recorded and produced her music with the backing of her own band Funk House, but the machinations of the industry hampered her progress until she retreated from view after this record from 1979. Light In The Attic have gone some way to righting the injustice by giving her stellar albums the reissue treatment they deserve, and on Crashin From Passion you can hear Davis spread her wings stylistically without dulling the impact of her hard-bitten soul. This edition comes pressed up on clear blue wax - an essential gem for anyone who takes the evolution of funk seriously.

Review: A new early cornerstone for Velvet Underground fanatics, 'Words And Music May 1965' is Lou Reed in his earliest incarnation, spanning some of the artist's earliest-known recordings. Demo versions of 'Heroin' and 'Pale Blue Eyes' both make appearances, while seven further completely unreleased and unheard songs also come to fruition. The earliest is a doo-wop serenade recorded in 1958, when Reed was just sixteen years old.

Review: Light In The Attic's continued series of Lou Reed reissues follows up the outstanding Words and Music, May 1965 with this wholly different side to the legendary singer-songwriter. As a devoted student of Tai Chi, Reed composed some ambient pieces for his own personal use while practicing. It was only as friends started to ask for copies that he decided to round the project out and present it as his last solo album - in his own words, "I then wrote two more pieces with the same intent: to relax the body, mind, and spirit and facilitate meditation." As well as the music, remastered and pressed onto double vinyl, there's bonus reading material in the form of interviews with people close to Reed in the context of his Tai Chi, yoga and meditation practice.

Light In The Attic teams up with Laurie Anderson and the Lou Reed Archive for a thrilling retrospective, Why Don't You Smile Now: Lou Reed At Pickwick Records 1964-65. An expansive selection of songs all written by Lou Reed, during his mid-60s stint as the staff songwriter for the long-defunct label Pickwick Records, this is a rare glimpse of a master rock musician stepping out of the limelight over the course of 25 songs, yet still letting the form and contour of his voice and sensibility be heard. All this was achieved before Reed had at all launched his career with the Velvets; it may indeed be said that this pubescent 60s period was the firelighter to Reed's flame, as the label specialised in soundalike records that emulated the major pop hits of the day - it's no wonder Reed would absorb such emulations and take them in as his own, albeit with a Century-defining twist. Channelling everything from teenybopper pop to soul-inflected garage rock, whether byJeannie Larimore, The Hi-Lifes or The Hollywoods, we get a thorough look-in here as to what made Reed and his contemporaries tick, and what Reed made tick in turn, before the fame.

Review: Why Don't You Smile Now: Lou Reed at Pickwick Records 1964-65 offers a fascinating glimpse into Lou Reed's early work as a hired songwriter before his iconic days with the Velvet Underground. Released by Light in the Attic Records, this 25-song anthology captures the raw beginnings of Reed's journey in music. The double vinyl format showcases Reed's ability to navigate a range of styles, from the surf-infused doo-wop of the Hollywoods' 'Teardrop In The Sand' to the gritty garage-rock of the Roughnecks' 'You're Driving Me Insane.' This collection not only features Reed's contributions to Pickwick Records, a label known for its budget sound-alike recordings, but also includes the pivotal track 'The Ostrich,' a song that would eventually lead Reed to meet John Cale, laying the groundwork for the Velvet Underground. The anthology also highlights Reed's first collaboration with Cale on 'Why Don't You Smile,' which was later covered by Spiritualized. With detailed liner notes from Richie Unterberger and an essay by Lenny Kaye, this double vinyl release offers a deeper understanding of the roots of Reed's legendary career.

Review: The 1967 album Country, My Way by Nancy Sinatra, reissued by Light In The Attic, highlights her distinctive blend of pop and country. Recorded at RCA Studios in Nashville, the album shows Nancy's ability to fuse her own style with classic country elements. The album opens with the upbeat 'It's Such a Pretty World Today' and includes the hit duet 'Jackson' with Hazlewood, rivalling Johnny Cash and June Carter's version. Nancy's take on George Jones' 'Walk Through This World with Me' and Don Gibson's 'Oh Lonesome Me' prove her command of country ballads. The album's other great tracks also include the emotional 'When It's Over' and the joyous 'Lay Some Happiness on Me'. Remastered from the original analogue tapes by John Baldwin, the reissue adds five bonus tracks, including the James Bond theme 'You Only Live Twice' and the non-album single 'Tony Rome'. With its expanded gatefold jacket and a 20-page booklet featuring a Q&A with Nancy, this reissue pays homage to her pioneering musical contributions.

Review: The definitive reissue of Nancy Sinatra's 1967 album Country, My Way brilliantly show her unique fusion of pop and country, a sound she pioneered alongside producer Lee Hazlewood. Review: The definitive vinyl reissue of Nancy Sinatra's iconic 1967 album, Sugar, serves as a timeless tribute to her artistry and cultural impact. With hits like 'Sugar Town', 'In Our Time' and 'Coastin'', the album showcases Sinatra's sultry vocals, blending contemporary pop with 1920s compositions, all wrapped in producer Lee Hazlewood's innovative Dixieland jazz fusion style. This reissue, remastered from the original analog tapes, breathes new life into the tracks while maintaining their authentic charm. Featuring two bonus tracks, including the non-album single 'Leave My Dog Alone', this edition is beautifully packaged in an expanded gatefold LP format, complete with a 20-page booklet containing a Q&A with Sinatra and unseen personal photos. The eye-catching cover, featuring the groundbreaking Ron Joy photograph of Sinatra in a pink bikini, solidified her status as a fashion icon. Sinatra's confident delivery and playful, yet empowering lyrics redefined female pop music in the 1960s. As a pioneering artist, she established a unique identity that inspired generations, blending her personal struggles with a fierce independence that resonates today. This reissue not only celebrates the music of Sugar but also cements Nancy Sinatra's legacy as a trailblazer for female artists in the music industry.

Review: Nancy Sinatra, with her strong, sultry voice and savvy approach, has been a pioneering force in music and business, shaping the path for future female artists while dropping many a great record. On a chilly spring day in 1966, a then twenty-five-year-old Sinatra recorded 'Strawberries, cherries, and an angel's kiss in spring...' for her third LP within four months at London's Pye Studios, known for having hosted The Kinks, Petula Clark, and David Bowie. The album, produced in just three days, features a distinct British flavour with tracks like 'On Broadway,' 'Wishin' and Hopin',' and 'This Little Bird' and also includes the classic Nancy & Lee Hazlewood duet 'Summer Wine.'

Review: Stone Flower was a little-known, short-lived record label licensed exclusively to Sly Stone himself. It produced but four singles in the period 1970-74, and beyond that, saw to a short run of LPs from the likes of Gladys Knight, Herbie Mann and Eddie Jefferson. However, thanks to a series of retakes and bonus material, LITA were able to reproduce this compilation; a compendium of all the best music the label had to offer, with choice bits from Joe Hicks, Sly, Little Sister and 6ix in tow.

Review: The 'Pacific Breeze' series documents the best of Japanese city pop, the genre that took such metropoli as Kyoto and Osaka by storm in the mid 1970s and from then on. With blistering optimism, the tracks on this third compilation blend funk, surf and R&B elements, forming a heady stew of music, all of which has been remastered in only the most pristine multi-channel quality.

Review: Even the Forest Hums: Ukrainian Sonic Archives 1971-1996 stands as a monumental collection, capturing the evolution of Ukraine's music from the Soviet era to the dawn of independence. This compilation, meticulously assembled by Matt Sullivan and producers David Mas, Mark McNeill, and Shukai Records, offers an unprecedented glimpse into Ukraine's rich musical heritage. The collection spans from Soviet-era folk and rock to underground electronic experiments, reflecting both political dissent and creative evolution. Through rare tracks from folk-rock group Kobza's 'Bunny' to the Caribbean-tinged 'Remembrance' by Vodohrai, the compilation showcases a diverse array of genres and influences. The 80s and 90s contributions highlight Ukraine's vibrant underground scene, featuring experimental sounds like Vadym Khrapachov's synth-driven 'Dance' and Radiodelo's industrial '90'. Review: Light In The Attic only deals in records you absolutely must own, but this Pacific Breeze series in particular has been fantastic. Happy it now gets up to a third instalment with another laser focus on Japanese City POP, AOR and Boogie between the years of 1975 and 1987. And there is a wealth of material for them to go out. Across four sides of glorious green vinyl, we're treated to high-grade sounds from plenty of known and lesser-known artists such as Atsuko Nina, Yukako Hayase, 1986 Omega Tribe and many more. There is a melodic joy and cathartic cleanliness to these sounds that always leave you wanting more.
