Review: Self taught, 70s- born London-based artist Mike Bandoni dropped his concept EP Lost Communication in 2020. It now finds its way to vinyl and invites listeners on a journey into "interstellar space and on towards a super massive black hole. A discovery mission in alien territory fraught with lost communication." It blends together heavy drums and more funky and organic drums, plenty of cosmic synth sounds and always with a strong groove at its core. While classic sounds of the 70s are referenced this remains a thoroughly futuristic album perfect for both close headphone listening or nice and loud on a proper good sound system.

Review: R&b and funk singer, rhythm guitar musician and songwriter Rickey Calloway hailed from Jacksonville, Florida but earned himself a global reputation. His style borrowed from James Brown but brought something new, inspired by his time playing in clubs from a relatively young age. He was active in the 70s and much of his music has been reissue do newer audiences since and now comes his King Of Funk album on Funk Night which, from the title down, pays homage to the aforementioned Brown. It features his most well known tune - the wonderful 'Tell Me' - as well as plenty of other big hitters like there particularly hard hitting 'Shake It Up, Shake It Down.'

They know how to serve up the most potent dancefloor bombs for DJs who like to make an impact and after countless 7"s to that effect, they now drop an entire album's worth of high-grade tackle. 3rd Drop from this Russian quartet takes in 12 of their most signature sounds, from the rolling and cosmic-tinged open 'Adventures Begin' via the bristling broken beats of 'Not Good, Too Bad.' There is a 60s American feel to many of these cuts as well as some more slow and sentimental moments like the organ-laced melancholy of 'From Darkness To The Light'.

Review: Despite the Afro-centric name, Kenako band is actually a jazz, fusion and acrobat outfit from Saint Petersburg in Russia. The band came together in 2017 and has 10 members that takes in various skilled musicians of the Petersburg underground scene. Their orchestra is a like a hurricane that sweeps you off your feet and takes you on a good-spirit trip through big riffs, wind and percussive sounds that celebrate the warmth of the sun. This self titled debut is a fine statement that is filled with vital rhythms.

Review: This new album from Les Truffles is as delicious as the thing they are named after, and as classy too. It's a deep dive into their smoky and seductive late night instrumental funk sound. The drumming is deft and feathery, the chords like puddles of bliss and the melodies hypotonic. Sometimes there is caution in the stick work to make for an unsettling mood, at others these sounds are warm and controlling for evening relaxation. Fans of El Michels Affair and Bad Bad Not Good will surely lap up this double album on Funk Night.

Review: This new record from Misha Panfilov came after just two days rehearsing and recording time. That pressure and restriction has got the very best work out of him as these four new compositions are offered up in expanded formation on Gala and make for the musicians most soulful and intimate sounds yet. He played them in a large hall with the septet painting grand musical structures that draw on all sorts of jazz. Say Misha Panfilov of the process, "While observing the condition of the experiment, this group enters energy fields of cosmic balance. The mellow framework allows music to unfold and fill you up with harmony, beauty, love, and respect." They're not wrong, too.

Review: Misha Panfilov, the Estonian contemporary jazz mover whose many Janus faces amount to more than just two, resulting in many album avatars - here shares a live recorded rendition of a recent pair of shows, played back to back in Stockholm, then Tallinn. The first recorded at Fasching, Stockholm, on August 16, 2023, and the second recorded at Paavli Kultuurivabrik, Tallinn, August 19, 2023, this live record is composed of pieces otherwise heard on Panfilov's earlier albums, and they're chopped and changed to an exclusive running order here. Review: Talk about a sonic time capsule. Misha Panfilov never ceases to impress with his compositions, but on Rain he arguably breaks the mould. The tracks are as groove-laden and funky as anything the 1970s could possibly have come up with, all laidback funk rock stylings, and play out across this album like a series of found sounds in full song form.
The phrase 'library music' springs to mind, only here it means the kind of eye-catching accidentals that would perfectly soundtrack a classic TV show, movie introduction or cut scene. They exude so much cool you can almost see the record strutting its stuff through the streets of Paris in the throws of youth revolution , and the smoke from a hundred Galwans wafting over your head. At times mysterious, often playful and occasionally raucous and rabid, it's all very sexy indeed.

Review: In 2022, modern-day Estonian jazz superstar Misha Panfilov dropped 'Momentum', one of six albums by the composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer to be released. Themed after the gothic image of Panfilov and his band playing in an abandoned mois (manor), this is a twilit spiritual jazz opus, backed by a troupe of percussionists (Leonid Galaganov, Madis Katkosilt, etc.) eager to accompany Panfilov's instrumental avarice; the master musician plays a grand total of twelve instruments on this dubious dream of an album, including, besides your typical jazz band inclusions, a waterphone and a Mellotron.

Review: There's a good chance the name Misha Panfilov doesn't mean that much to you. Yet. The Estonian producer and musician is indicative of the thriving Tallinn music scene, and has worked with the liked of US maestro Shawn Lee, and also released work as Misha Panfilov Sound Combo. Despite those exceptional outings, though, Penza Penza might be the artist's finest project of the lot, with Neanderthal Rock the best outing to date.
Incredibly detailed, almost cacophonous stuff, to put it mildly, what's here is a trippy, psychedelic ride through the furthest reaches of rock 'n' roll, touches of folk, shoegaze, jazz, and downtempo electronic pop ensuring things rarely remain the same for very long on a full play through. Overall, though, the feeling here is one that has at least a foot stood in the 1960s, and another in the vast expanse of space itself.

Recorded at Studio Des Fontaines in just 25 hours, and using the very Hammond organ owned by a former member of one of the house bands at the Zoom Zoom nightclub in Saint Tropez (which would have been used onstage for Brigitte Bardot, Michel Polnareff, Jacques Dutronc, Serge Gainsbourg, and Jane Birkin), Themes et Atmospheres is a no-fluff compendium of funk instrumentals, rolling down the tinteds and clouding the glasses with bass-centric riffers from 'Pop Psychedelique' to 'Dans Le Sac', erring on the serous and erotic.
