Review: Kristin Hersh and Bernard George are best known for their work in iconic US indie stalwarts Throwing Muses, but outside of that project and their solo endeavours they also have a long-running project called 50 Foot Wave. Originally emerging around the turn of the century, the band has been quiet for some time but now returns with their first album in 18 years, Black Pearl. From the heavy riffs of 'Staring Into The Sun' to the spidery guitar and baroque qualities of 'Hog Child', it's a masterful album which explores new paths for Hersh and George alike, ably assisted by drummer Rob Ahlers.

Review: It's a strange magic that's driven Bardo Pond in their quarter century as a band, yet it's one that effortlessly separates them from any other band operating in similar shoegaze, drone or psychedelic worlds - the drifting, languorous soundscapes, jammed-out abstractions and Neil Young-style guitar workouts of 'Under The Pines' coalesce into a glorious soundworld of trippy rapture and trance-inducing transcendence, steered by Isobel Sollenberger's radiant and reflective voice. Bardo Pond's extensive archive recordings series opens up once again with Volume 9, an incisive journey into their hypnotic sound. Recorded in the early 2000s, this one's a heady mix of acoustic ambience and menacing distortion. Infamous purveyors of longform stoner rock, Bardo Pond embrace their sludgestorms with graceful nods to Hawkwind, Earth and My Bloody Valentine. For anyone uninitiated with the band's tranquilizing sound, Volume 9 leans into their mesmeric practise with reckless abandon. Featuring two tracks recorded with ace percussionist Michael Zanghi and the seminal two-parter 'War Is Over', a lilting Floydian strum that's invaded - quite literally - by unreconstructed noise. The Zanghi collaboration, meanwhile, is an Eastern-facing mantra with percussive flurries and distorted modal shifts.

Review: Swedish duo Death and Vanilla, who apparently take their name from a Nick Cave song, are purveyors of a very particular kind of psychedelia, one that takes its cues from the more exotic, esoteric and experimental strains whose lineage began with United States Of America and Silver Apples and later found powerful adherents in Broadcast. As rich in celestial arrangement and atmosphere as it is in melody and instrumentation, 'To Where The Wild Things Are' is possessed of a sepia-tinted melancholy and a narcotic charm. A better display of sonic super-8 B-movie radiance would be hard to find in 2015.

Review: Are you a dreamer? Swedish band Death & Vanilla ask across eight contemporary takes on German Krautrock, French Ye-ye pop and 60s psychedelic. Vocals are breezy, their moog synths fat, with guitars drenched in reverb and delay. At times the band's sound aligns with other kindred groups like Goldfrapp, Portishead or even Bjork (with "Vespertine") through their subtle take on downbeat, alternative '90s pop and this is heard most in "Let's Never Leave Here". "Are You A Dreamer?" delivers the Malmo trio a fifth studio LP following last year's conceptual soundtrack for stage and screen entitled "A Score For Roman Polanski's The Tenant", and this time around, our highlights include the spacey western riffs of "Eye Bath" and the ever-so dreamy "The Hum". Esoteric modern pop for sure.

Review: Sweden's vintage gear loving Death and Vanilla continue to defy expectation with their singular take on pop music as they present this new album Flicker. It's a record that holds a mirror up to these difficult modern times in which awe live and mixes up an array of different sonic foundations to do so. They are dub reggae, motorik Can kicks, Philip Glass's minimalism and dreamy but dark pop spins from The Cure. Add in elements of Spiritualized and Talking Heads with a hint of Brian Eno and you chose have a good idea of what to expect here.
