Dubwise EP
Dubwise EP (translucent red vinyl 12")
Cat: DSCI 4045. Rel: 13 Jun 24

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Blueprint (9:28)
Dubwise (7:38)
Looking To The Future (8:17)
Groove Creator (10:01)
Review: Four unreleased tracks from 1997 come back to the surface, recasting the luminant talents of Danny C and Mike Pears in a more contemporary light. Alleged to have been preserved on DAT for the last 27 years, there is still a consistent, clean quality to these four bits. Opener 'Blueprint' and its successor 'Dubwise' establish a utilitarian futuristic sound, betraying something of the now less popular sound that bridged jungle to techstep. The vibe on the former track lays down a mechanistic yet jazzy feel, with its semitonic Rhodes chords contrasting well to the track's outlying machinic qualities. 'Looking To The Future' and 'Groove Creator' similarly portray two death-driven, repetitious images of an automatic future.

Lostdubs 002
Cat: LOSTDUBS 002. Rel: 15 Jul 16

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Lost Eternity (Verb remix) (5:21)
Haze (DJ Future remix) (6:00)
Review: Six years have passed since jungle legend Trace last dusted off any classics and this time he's provided the parts to friends old and new. Veteran Verb brings the 21 year old "Lost Entity" up to speed with much wilder, heavier and faster drums but the same spine-melting chords. New(ish) face to DSCi4 DJ Future is let loose on 1995 track "Haze" and completely rebuilds it from its stark minimal roots into a steaming slab of paranoid hardcore grit. Muscular.

Spy Technologies 8: Pandemic (Album Sampler)
Cat: DSCI4LP 011S. Rel: 11 Jun 21

Drum & Bass / Jungle
DJ Trace & Emery - "Curfew" (5:42)
Malign - "Tearaway" (6:42)
Clearance - "Thunderin" (4:32)
J-Kon - "War Torn" (6:08)
Review: DJ Trace's 'Spy Technologies' series has come a long way since its 2002 inception. The original comp was a neurofunk milestone, and deftly justified Trace's status as a drum n' bass pioneer, run through with spy imagery and themes. Now on its eighth instalment, the DSCI4 sub-imprint has become increasingly star-studded, with Trace now curating the first 4-track selection from the upcoming LP. Straddling dutty jungle ('War Torn') to rap-sampling neuro rollers ('Thunderin'), one can only describe this EP as audio-nunjitsu, scoping out the desert compound for insider info on the full-length. Out on limited blueberry-coloured vinyl, it's an apt soundtrack for your next reconnaissance mission.

Spy Technologies X Sampler
Spy Technologies X Sampler (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: DSCI4 040S. Rel: 29 Feb 24

Drum & Bass / Jungle
DJ Trace - "Mutationz" (Concord Dawn remix) (7:48)
DJ Trace & Ryme Tyme - "Move" (8:50)
DJ Trace & Voyager - "Sniper" (7:45)
DJ Trace & Nico - "Replicants VIP" (7:16)
Review: DJ Trace's DSCI4 dropped the eight-track Spy Technologies X Sampler compilation last year, gathering together label classics, giving them a remaster and a digital release for the first time ever. Now this 12" cherry picks the strongest cuts and gets them back out there into the physical realm, focusing on Trace's own work and collaborations with his co-conspirators. The Concord Dawn remix of 'Mutationz' is a hyphy kick-off to the A-side before the dark n' deadly 'Move' link up with Ryme Tyme. Trace and Voyager turn up the pressure with the Reese attack of 'Sniper' and then it's Nico who joins the boss for a cooler, deadlier crusher called 'Replicants'.

Rice Bowl
Rice Bowl (clear marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: DSCI4 020. Rel: 05 Feb 16

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Gremlinz & Adrian Go - "Rice Bowl" (5:21)
Quartz - "Tachyon" (feat Nanobyte) (5:49)
Review: Stealthily relaunched last year after three years of silence, Trace's hugely influential DSCI14 label continues to forage at the very forefront of drum & bass. Following impeccable releases from Release, Survey and Verb comes this alarming slab of double-A darkness: Gremlinz and Adrian Go create a scarring reece and press it down over a pneumatic halftime arrangement while Quartz heads down to his local steel foundry and paints a sonic picture of molten metals and immense crushing machinery. Powerful.

Spy Technologies 6 Sampler
Cat: DSCI4LP 008S. Rel: 19 Dec 11

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Mindscape - "Flashback"
Mr Foul - "Land Of Look Behind"
Review: DSCi4 present the sixth release in their Spy Technologies sampler series, featuring the talents of Mindscape and Mr Foul. Mindscape's "Flashback" on the A-Side delivers some meaty old-skool action, with some satisfying low end going hand in hand with light melodic touches and cowbell percussion, while Mr Foul's "Land Of Look Behind" is a more sinister number, filled with terrifying ambience and a deep bass growl. Highly recommended.

Someone Else
Review: DSCi4 records in the past has been responsible for launching the careers of some of today's hottest DNB talent...BSE, Chris SU, SKC, Mindscape and STA + Paul B have all enjoyed successful EP's on DSCi4. It would seem fitting that in the summer of 2006 DSCi4 will present one of Canada's finest up and coming artists, Pacific.
