Review: Celebrate the 25th anniversary of AFI's All Hallow's E.P. with this limited-edition release on "Spectral Pink" vinyl. This cult-classic EP, originally released in 1999, is reimagined with alternative fluorescent cover art and includes a 10" x 20" black light die-cut coffin poster, evoking the eerie charm of the original Nitro Records promo. The EP, clocking in at a fitting 13 minutes, features AFI's standout tracks: a formidable cover of The Misfits' 'Halloween', the iconic 'The Boy Who Destroyed the World', the infectious 'Totalimmortal', and the fan favorite 'Fall Children'. This limited 10-inch pressing offers a nostalgic nod to the band's punk roots while showing their early foray into melodic and atmospheric sounds. AFI, formed in 1991, evolved from a hardcore act into melodic pioneers with their 1999 album Black Sails in the Sunset and subsequent releases. The All Hallow's E.P. remains a sought-after gem in their discography. With this reissue, fans can relive the magic of AFI's early days, now with a hauntingly collectible twist.

Review: Alter Bridge's debut album made a bold statement when it first arrived in 2004, showcasing a dynamic shift from the members' previous project. With a heavier, more aggressive sound, the band set themselves apart through thick basslines, intricate melodies and fiery guitar work. Myles Kennedy's commanding voice elevates the album, blending seamlessly with the instrumental intensity. 'Metalingus', remains a defining moment, pairing pounding drums with razor-sharp riffs that build to an explosive energy. Its enduring appeal is evident in its inclusion across various media, cementing its place as a fan favorite. Tracks like 'Open Your Eyes' and 'Broken Wings' balance the album's raw power with heartfelt emotion, offering a glimpse of the band's versatility. This deluxe reissue breathes new life into the album, adding five live recordings that capture the electrifying energy of the band's performances. The live versions of 'One Day Remains' and 'Burn It Down' amplify the album's intensity on the last side of this release. These additions highlight Alter Bridge's ability to bring their studio craftsmanship to the stage, delivering performances that resonate deeply with fans.

Review: Andrew Bird has finally dropped his debut album of jazz standards, Sunday Morning Put-On, with the Andrew Bird Trio, featuring Ted Poor on drums and Alan Hampton on bass. Recorded live at Valentine Recording Studios in Southern California, Bird produced the album which includes classics by Duke Ellington and Cole Porter himself. Highlights include 'Caravan' and 'You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To' and the album closes with the original track 'Ballon de peut-etre.' Additional contributors include guitarist Jeff Parker and pianist Larry Goldings and a tour has also been announced to support the album.

You & The Night & The Music
When You Wish Upon A Star
I'll Never Smile Again
Interplay
You Go To My Head
Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams
Review: A striking departure from the classic piano-bass-drums format, this 1962 session brings together a rare quintet configuration, weaving trumpet and guitar into the fabric of post-bop elegance all based around New Jersey-born pianist Evans. The interplay is both literal and musical between the musicians. With trumpet lines that alternate between burnished lyricism and bursts of fire and guitar passages that glide with subtle precision, the ensemble creates a sound that is both spacious and tightly knit. The repertoire leans into standards, yet each tune is rendered with a fresh rhythmic spark and harmonic sophistication. 'I'll Never Smile Again' shimmers with wistful melancholy, while 'When You Wish Upon a Star' is recast with a gentle yet cerebral charm. Fans of more intimate trio settings might initially find the added instrumentation unfamiliar, but there's an undeniable allure in the expanded sonic palette. The drummer drives the group with crisp energy while the bassist anchors with subtle authority and the collective chemistry elevates the session beyond typical quintet fare. This is a bold, beautiful detour in the legacy of modern jazz and one that rewards the listener. A reissue worth revisiting, or discovering anew.

Very Early
Review: The New Jersey-born pianist returns to the studio here for the first time since the sudden loss of bassist Scott LaFaro, whose death in 1961 marked a devastating rupture for one of jazz's most intuitive trios. Now joined by Chuck Israels on bass, Evans leads with a newfound clarityiless conversational, more contemplative. Recorded in 1962, this was the group's first step into a quieter but no less daring phase. 'Re: Person I Knew' (an anagram of producer Orrin Keepnews) sets the tone: ghostly, elliptical, and harmonically dense. 'I Fall in Love Too Easily' and 'Polka Dots and Moonbeams' drift by in breathy half-light, while 'Very Early', a waltz penned by Evans, closes the set with delicate finality. In the absence of LaFaro's dancing counterlines, Evans doesn't fill the space, but lets it speak. The result is a study in restraint: American post-bop pared down to its emotional core. Not a debut, nor a reinvention, this is a quiet reckoning and a beautifully unresolved response to loss.

Review: Violin extraordinaire and singer Andrew Bird teams up with an Americana icon, whose star has risen and is continuing to rise - Madison Cunningham. Bird says of Cunningham that she is one of the most talented musicians he's ever encountered. Together they've covered the 1973 album Buckingham Nicks - Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's pre-Fleetwood Mac LP and done a brilliant job of it. Buckingham Nicks was a flop commercially when it was released and despite the duo's subsequent success it was never remastered or re-released digitally, so hard to come by. Thankfully, Cunningham and Bird bring this underrated gem into the limelight and do so in style. "The best reason to cover anyone is that little part of you that thinks you might do it better. This album epitomizes excess and confidence and it only made sense to embody that spirit ourselves," says Bird in a press release. And he's quite right - there's no misplaced arrogance here - they've nailed this homage to a classic.

Review: The Blackbyrds, Washington Direct-Current pioneers of jazz-funk from the early 70s, overloaded the jazz circuit with City Life, a hair-frying album renowned for its flowing, fulminous rhythms. Core tracks 'Happy Music' and 'Rock Creek Park' set the stage for a long sampling legacy: the latter was famously sampled by both De La Soul and Nas, on 'Bitties In The BK Lounge' and 'Fried Chicken' respectively. This reissue, cut from the original tapes (AAA) by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, reupholsters the Blackbyrds' debut worm-catching funk pecks for the world's ears to witness once more.

One of the leading hard bop gangs of the time, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell, and bassist George Morrow all featured and gave rise to these lively and energetic cuts. The likes of 'Cherokee' certainly blow away any cobwebs with the fluid and florid trumpets dancing over sizzling drums, and the more swinging (and excellently named) 'Gerkin For Perkin' is super short but sweet.

Review: Bush's Sixteen Stone, celebrating its 30th anniversary with a striking apple red vinyl reissue, remains a cornerstone of 90s alternative rock and a pivotal entry in the post-grunge scene. This debut album, released in 1994, features iconic tracks like 'Glycerine', 'Everything Zen', 'Comedown' and 'Machinehead', showcasing Gavin Rossdale's emotive vocals and the band's raw energy. Unlike their American counterparts, Bush's sound leaned towards melody rather than textural complexity. Critics often dismissed their abstract lyrics, but beneath the surface lies a wealth of clever imagery, as seen in songs like 'Swim' and the self-deprecating 'Testosterone'. The album thrives on catchy hooks and face-melting riffs, with tracks like 'Monkey' and 'X-Girlfriend' delivering relentless energy. Yet, it's the tender moments that shine, notably 'Glycerine', where Rossdale's sincerity resonates and 'Alien', which features delicate guitar work. 'Comedown' encapsulates the album's essence, reflecting on fleeting highs with a sense of nostalgia. Sixteen Stone epitomises the band's raw rock roots and remains an enduring classic that captures the spirit of a generation like no other.

Review: Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Butcher Brown are a five-piece band with a solid run of heavy-grooving records behind them, but they're switching things up on this new record for Concord Jazz. The album finds band member Tennishu leading as he grips the mic for a big band approach to hip-hop which draws on the band's considerable skills to render a widescreen twist on rap with more than a little jazz informing the sound. Nodding to past hip-hop legends (shouting out Biggie Smalls on 'Unbelievable', for example) but bringing their own bold and brassy sound to the fore, this is an assured and hard-funking record with mass appeal.

Review: Virginia collective Butcher Brown flaunt their lapidary, multifaceted flair for transversal jazz on their new album for Concord Jazz, via a seamless blend of funk, r&b, soul, bossa nova and much, much else. Through the collective persona of Butcher Brown - an imagined philosopher jazzmaster king, whose grasp of music is said to owe much to legacies of garage punk and jazz funk - the smooth quintet say this "joint" was recorded with the intention of recreating the kind of music one might find oneself dancing to in a club in New York and the UK, attesting all of the band members' compounded skills as music producers. Chopping up samples whilst performing on the fly, the record takes its name from the fact that all members were "pulling samples from across the Atlantic", building their grooves around them.

Review: The recordings that make up Afro Blue Impressions were acquired by jazz impresario and auteur Norman Granz, during the tours he produced for many jazz artists during the 1960s, though they weren't issued until 1973. Recorded at shows in Berlin and Stockholm, the John Coltrane Quartet - comprising pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones - is in tremendous form here, using a familiar repertoire in order to expand upon the group's own building blocks in creating the new post-harmonic system that the saxophonist was developing at the time. Reissued on vinyl by Craft Recordings, this one comes released as part of the Craft Jazz Essentials series.

Review: Originally released in 1970, the band's fifth album combined rock, blues, country and r&b into one of the most powerful, cohesive and electrifying packages that was ever released. The album features an unparalleled string of hits, including the anthemic 'Who'll Stop the Rain', the rollicking 'Travelin' Band', the brooding 'Run Through the Jungle' and the jubilant 'Lookin' Out My Back Door'. John Fogerty's songwriting strikes a balance between apocalyptic dread and whimsical nostalgia, creating a vivid tapestry of post-'60s America. The band's cover of Marvin Gaye's 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' transforms the Motown classic into an 11-minute blues-rock odyssey, showcasing their exceptional musicianship and Fogerty's fiery guitar work. Opening with the dynamic 'Ramble Tamble', the album embodies the restless energy of a band pushing its creative limits. From the wild country-funk of the opener to the soulful balladry of 'Long as I Can See the Light', Cosmo's Factory moves effortlessly between moods. Review: A defining moment in the evolution of swamp rock from the opening notes of 'Born on the Bayou', the album pulling listeners into a world of misty Southern nights and raw Americana. John Fogerty's gritty vocals and evocative storytelling are perfectly matched by the band's tight, blues-infused instrumentation. 'Proud Mary' stands as the album's crown jewel, with its timeless melody and heartfelt lyrics, cementing the band's place in rock history. Tracks like 'Bootleg' exude a carefree, backwoods groove, while 'Penthouse Pauper' burns with bluesy intensity. The sprawling 'Graveyard Train' drips with atmospheric melancholy, its hypnotic rhythm creating an almost trance-like experience. Now reissued on Tangerine vinyl, the album closes with 'Keep on Chooglin'', an energetic jam that shows the band's ability to build momentum and deliver electrifying performances. Fogerty's searing guitar work and the rhythm section's relentless drive make it an exhilarating finale. With Bayou Country, CCR fused blues, rock and country into a sound that feels timeless and uniquely their own.

Review: The Ruby Anniversary of Creedence Clearwater Revival's fourth studio album is upon us. An intriguing conceptual detour by the swamp rock swashbucklers, Willy and the Poor Boys was at first thunk as concept record, centring on a bizarro alternate version of the band; also the album's namesake. This idea was quickly scrapped in light of its inspirations, which took after the commercially unappealing idea of a wandering jug band, busking their way through great depressive dog days. It proved the right move: anthems 'Fortunate Son' and 'Down On The Corner' proved monumental hits. This edition also includes bonus tracks and live versions, as well as an unreleased studio version of 'Down On The Corner', recorded with Booker T & The MGs.

Review: This early gem - in fact, it was the maestro's first ever 12" record - shows a masterful command of space and melody, spotlighting a warm, muted trumpet tone alongside a pared-down ensemble. Without a saxophone, the spotlight remains squarely on the lead, providing ample room for expansive solos and lyrical interpretations. Anchored by a stellar rhythm section featuring a buoyant bassist, impeccable pianist and dynamic drummer, the performances exude a relaxed yet precise energy. Highlights include a fresh, distinctive take on the Dizzy Gillespie classic 'A Night in Tunisia', where the group reimagines the piece with effortless ingenuity. Original compositions add further depth, with a witty riposte to a well-known standard and a contemplative piece that lingers in the listener's mind. A transitional moment for one of the all time greats, hinting at the greatness to come all the way back in 1955.

Review: Craft Recordings' Miles '54: The Prestige Recordings is an excellent retrospective that has Miles Davis at a transformative period in his career. Spanning 20 tracks, this collection highlights the pivotal year of 1954, where Davis honed his signature sound and emerged as a leading figure in jazz. The album features contributions from luminaries like Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, and Art Blakey, who together elevate the sessions to iconic status. The set includes insightful session notes by Dan Morgenstern and a thoughtful essay by Ashley Kahn, providing historical context and depth. The collection is a journey through Davis' evolving artistry, from the melodic 'Four' to the innovative 'Bags' Groove.' Tracks like 'Walkin'' and 'Oleo' reveal a confident, boundary-pushing musician on the brink of greatness, while his use of the cup mute foreshadows the cool, introspective sound that would define much of his later work. Miles '54 is not just a celebration of a milestone year in Davis' career but also a tribute to the enduring legacy of Prestige Records.

Review: DIIV's fourth album, Frog in Boiling Water, is a haunting yet mesmerizing testament to the band's resilience and creativity. Produced by Chris Coady, the album emerges after a tumultuous four-year journey that nearly tore the band apart. Drawing inspiration from Daniel Quinn's The Story of B, the album explores themes of societal collapse under end-stage capitalism, symbolized by the metaphor of the boiling frog. The lead single, Brown Paper Bag, sets the tone with its intersection of dream-pop and post-rock, capturing the band's blend of dejection and angst. Throughout the album's ten tracks, DIIV navigate a musical landscape that balances rhythms built from breakbeats with ethereal guitars and vocals. Despite facing internal conflicts and external pressures, DIIV's commitment to creating meaningful art shines through on Frog in Boiling Water. Each song reflects the band's collective struggle and resilience, offering a poignant commentary on the precarious state of the world. While the album's creation was fraught with challenges, including personal struggles and creative differences, DIIV emerges stronger than ever. Frog in Boiling Water is a testament to the band's ability to confront adversity head-on and channel their experiences into music that is both introspective and evocative. With its haunting melodies and introspective lyrics, Frog in Boiling Water is a special addition to DIIV's discography, showing the band's evolution and maturation as artists.

Review: Long based sax supremo Nubya Garcia's debut album was a real thing of beauty so it only makes sense it now gets revisited by a team of super remixers for this special Record Store Day release. Presented on limited edition turquoise marbled vinyl it opens with Makaya McCraven's airy and floaty light remix of 'Source' before DJ Tahira layers up 'Stand With Each Other' with ethno-grooves that are loose and off kilter. That tumbledown vibe continues on the scruffy deep house version of 'Together Is A Beautiful Place To Be' by Shy One before big jazz house feels from Mark De Clive-Lowe close things down.

Review: Nubya Garcia is one of the icons of the current, thriving jazz scene. Her album Source was a deserving Mercury Prize-nominee and here she reworks it through a series of new collars with the likes of DJ Harrison, Moses Boyd, Dengue Dengue Dengue and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Each of the new versions retains plenty of the soul and invention of the originals but adds in a range of other influences that take them in a more driving, groove-orientated direction. The results are stunning, with plenty of great options for DJs who like to play slow and sensuous. The Kaidi Tatham remix of 'La Cumbia Me Esta Llamando' is our personal pick.

Review: To red and black splatter vinyl comes Nubya Garcia's latest full-length record Odyssey, out of which which a nascent batch of volcanic red jazz, dub and hip-hop fusions effuse. Produced by Garcia in collaboration with London legend Kwes, Garcia returns with Joe Armon-Jones (keys), Daniel Casimir (bass) and Sam Jones (drums), also enlisting the aid of such featured guests as Esperanza Spalding and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Leading with the felsic dance that is 'The Seer', across which what sound to be microtonal saxophone improvisations move across dark interregnums and moodily rapacious razzes, the ensuing album is equally as explosive and never settles or sets, despite its molten presentation.

Review: For every artist who reaches immense heights early into their career, a second album brings much anticipation, and the exceptional tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia's Odyssey, is no exception. Musicians of the calibre of Garcia and her band have been honing their craft forever, and like this double album's name, all musically travel long and hard paths... Those that arrive at Garcia's deliciously distinct compositions on the legendary Concord Jazz record label, home of that other pioneer Esperanza Spalding, who guests on 'Dawn'. Garcia's luscious orchestrations fuse jazz with d&b, Latin, r&b, dub and beyond, in thoughtful syncopations and intriguing harmonics that speak of journeying. So, relish the funky intro of 'Set it Free' and Garcia's sultry tones with Richie's sweet and endearing siren-like vocals... On 'Seer' enjoy Garcia's precision, locked in heavenly reverbs and echoes playing off Jones' junglism and Armon-Jones' keys in a free jazz blast, and on 'Clarity' let Garcia, with her sisters-in-brass Maurice-Grey and Turton interweave Casimir's Bass in a luxurious cinematic embrace. Garcia with Kwes produce this adventure, one that undoubtedly will receive even more accolades. Odyssey, an album for lovers of all manifestations of jazz excellence to collect and treasure.

Review: Tenor saxophonist, bandleader and composer Nubya Garcia returns with her sophomore album, Odyssey, her second release on the Concord Jazz imprint, out in September 2024. Backlit by a decidedly crimson red, Garcia comes back by the likes of Kwes. and Joe-Armon Jones for a full dozen tracks of epical spiritual jazz travails. Laconic yet ipso facto expressive, Garcia remarks of the record that she felt that it ended up 'transversing so many things'; rather than settling on just one universe as a homeward base, Garcia finds freedom in the continual movement between universes. Led by the tense but no less joy-inflective 'The Seer', on which moods of broken jazz, and that of a treacherous but sagacious journeys, is evinced, Odyssey kicks things off on a larger-than-life note.

Review: Skeleta marks the sixth full-length from Swedish theatrical goth rock entity Ghost, following on from 2022's retro stadium-goth swing for the fences Impera. Known for their high-concept aesthetic solely credited to mastermind Tobias Forge, who undertakes differing mantles and characters pertaining to each era and project, Papa Emeritus IV who fronted their preceding work has now been replaced by Papa V Perpetua, and while his predecessor was said to have been driven by ruminations on empirical reigns, the latest leader of the band of "Nameless Ghouls" is more concerned with "demonic possessions" and succumbing to "dark forces", with the album promised to be their "most unflinchingly introspective work to date" while showcasing "distinct individual emotional vistas". With big riffs, soaring hooks and a lead single as brazenly titled as 'Satanized', it's time for yet another era of overtly gothic and purposefully cheesy occult-rock.

Review: Serving as the follow up to 2022's critically acclaimed and super cheesy by design stadium-goth opus Impera, Swedish rock occultists Ghost make their grand return with sixth full-length Skeleta. The vision of Tobias Forge, renowned for his charismatic vocal cadence and immense range, but more so for his undertaking of different characters and monikers for each album cycle, the Papa Emeritus IV delving into empirical fallacies on their previous outing has been usurped by Papa V Perpetua, who promises to deliver his band of Nameless Ghouls' "most unflinchingly introspective work to date" while showcasing "distinct individual emotional vistas", touching on "demonic possessions" and the allure of succumbing to "dark forces". In other words, expect mammoth riffs, epic refrains, large doses of overt theatricality verging on camp, and on-the-nose song titles such as 'Satanized'.

Review: Filmed over two nights at LA's Kia Forum, boasting Tobias Forge's charismatic stage presence and a setlist dominated by recent hits, this is a great example for how powerful the band is overall. Tracks like 'Kaisarion' and 'Watcher in the Sky' shine, especially with powerful choral backing and the haunting saxophone solo in 'Miasma.' The show balances theatrical spectacle and genuine warmth, with Forge's message of kindness resonating amid the glitz. While the setlist focuses on newer material, omitting earlier cult classics from Opus Eponymous and Infestissumam, Rite Here Rite Now still delivers a full-bodied, exhilarating experience. New track 'The Future Is a Foreign Land' closes the album on a high, blending retro vibes with catchy melodies and reinforcing Ghost's evolution toward melodic accessibility. A perfect blend of their recent material and their talent at performing them live with a great production.

Both records proved him to be a master of hip hop, broken beat and jazz and able to call upon some of the biggest names in those scene from Jill Scott to Erykah Badu. Both of those timeless records, as the title suggest, are steeped in Black music traditions and so is this third one. Here the award winning Glasper (nine Grammy nominations and four wins) works with modern greats such as Gregory Porter, Q Tip, BJ The Chicago Kid, Ty Dolla Sign and many more to cook up another powerful statement for these troubled times.

Review: Given that he's spent much of the last decade producing other artists, recording collaborative sets and performing live, you could say that Robert Glasper's latest solo set - his first, by our calculation, since 2009 - is long overdue. Of course, while it may be his name on the cover, it's still a collaborative affair, with the assembled cast list including a wealth of musicians, rappers and singers from the worlds of jazz and hip-hop, including (deep breath) Bilal, Herbie Hancock, Yasiin Bley, Buddy and Terrace Martin. To fit everyone and everything in (one thing Glasper is not short of is great ideas), the GRAMMY-winning pianist has presented it as a non-stop mixtape. It's a format that allows his widescreen, eclectic vision to come to life.

This one is a rather non-traditional holiday release that brings a weight and musical funkiness to a genre and time of year that is often seeped in campy or classic holiday motifs. The film may show its age these days, but the Gregory Peck-starring horror remains an all-time classic, and that's in no small part down to Jerry Goldsmith's score. Just listen to the eerie choral chants opening up 'Ave Satani' and feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. This seminal horror soundtrack has now been repressed on a limited blood red and black splattered vinyl, all the better to channel your own demons from the comfort of your home.

Review: When Keyon Harrold lists the influences that he turned to during the creation of his rich and evocative new album Foreverland, he cites the likes of Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane, and, for a second, he becomes vulnerable; the list is too basic, too serious-music-listener-starter-pack. But, out of that moment of insecurity, he spins an indelible flex: "You are what you eat, and I have a pretty strict diet in dope shit. Taking in Keyon Harrold's career to-date, it's clear that the 'world-class trumpeter' (Essence) and composer is very serious about that diet. He's a jazz musician but in the most expansive sense, working with a list of dream collaborators: generational legends Keith Richards and Diana Ross; rap stars like Mac Miller and Nas; neo-soul icons Erykah Badu and D'Angelo; and modern soul stars Black Pumas and Leon Bridges. His circle of regular collaborators is formidable and includes his music industry mentor Common (who hired him for his first touring gig), his New School classmate Robert Glasper, and GRAMMY winners Maxwell, PJ Morton, Gregory Porter, and YEBBA. Even apart from its compositional intricacies and stylistic innovations, Foreverland is a triumph of resilience and empowerment. "What will be said when you're gone?", says Keyon. "If you're not living life - getting beat up, getting your heart broken, winning, losing - what are you doing? What about your life can people learn from? If you don't put yourself in the ring sometimes, there won't be anything." On Foreverland, Keyon takes life's challenges head-on - and emerges, in both music and in life, with a renewed sense of purpose.

Review: Ever since Los Angeles noise-rock trio HEALTH provided the score to Rockstar Games' Max Payne 3, both their sonic and career paths have veered down a direction that avid early fans still have trouble reconciling. Shifting from predominantly instrumental, spasmodic chaos to a unique form of laser-focused, industrial metalwave; their 2019 opus Vol 4: Slaves Of Fear newly established them as the ultimate electronic act for metal fans. While lockdown led to the Disco 4 collaborative albums, split into two separate volumes and boasting a remarkably dynamic array of features from the likes of alt hip-hop guru JPEGMAFIA, trap-metal phenom Ghostemane, hyperpop absurdist duo 100 Gecs, industrial overlords Nine Inch Nails and even groove metal legends Lamb Of God, their fifth full-length Rat Wars draws on the insidious influence from these more aggressive collaborators while simultaneously offering some of their most vulnerable, melancholic and fragile material to date. Complete with a Godflesh sample, it's rather fitting when considering HEALTH's attempts to marry such disparate yet equally punishing sonics mirrors Justin Broadrick's forays from decades ago. Grinding, mechanical percussion fuses to ethereal, androgynous vocals all drowned within EBM sickliness, whilst unpacking utterly nihilistic worldviews. Imagine Placebo or The Pet Shop Boys writing an album with Ministry, and you may start to have an idea of the war you're heading into...

Killer Mike explains, "This is the epilogue to MICHAEL. It reflects what comes after February 4th. Living with MICHAEL for a year, I realised I wasn't finished exploring this sound before moving forward." The album delivers a soulful blend of reflection and closure and encapsulates the essence of a transformative period in Killer Mike's career while also setting the stage for what's to come.

Review: Drawing from early solo work, Union Station collaborations and cuts with The Cox Family, this release captures Alison Krauss at her most crystallineibalancing bluegrass roots with a soft-focus country-pop shimmer that made her a staple of the 90s Nashville crossover moment. Her take on Bad Company's 'Oh, Atlanta' gets a wistful lift, while 'Every Time You Say Goodbye' and 'When You Say Nothing at All' centre her unshakeable vocal clarity. Originally released in 1995 and now considered pivotal to Krauss' rise, it showcases her Kentucky-born precision, Grammy-level delivery, and the rare ability to make both Lennon-McCartney and traditional gospel feel like personal scripture.

Review: Puerto Rican salsa singer Hector Lavoe first released La Voz in 1977 via Fania Records, a specialist imprint formed by execs Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci in 1964, homing in on salsa, boogaloo and latin jazz. Now reissued via Concord, the eight-track, heavy-set salsa album is a slice of Lavoe's life back in the 70s, encapsulating his jolly nature, not least born in part from his crediting for helping pioneer the genre in its early heyday. Listeners will also note the inclusion of 'Mi Gente' in the GTA: Vice City Stories soundtrack, but we've no doubt that, on stumbling on the album here on Juno, they'll appreciate every track here regardless of that chance context.

Review: Originally released in 2014 and celebrating its ten-year anniversary this year, Cope would serve as the fourth full-length from Atlanta alternative rock outfit Manchester Orchestra. Following on from the breakout success of 2009's Mean Everything To Nothing, and the critical and commercial acclaim awarded to 2011's sombre and expansive Simple Math, primary songwriter Andy Hull sought to restore some of his project's earlier post-hardcore proclivities with this raw, jagged-edged batch of crunching indie-core bangers, all recorded in-house at their (at the time) newly built home-studio. Both self-described as an "unrelenting and unapologetically heavy 38 minutes of rock" and elaborated upon as "Whereas Simple Math was a different palate with each song, a different colour, I wanted this to be black and red the whole time;" utilising their expanded platform and popularity, Cope was the sonic risk necessary to rediscover creative self-fulfilment and deliver some of Manchester Orchestra's darkest, most cathartic, and emotionally charged material to date.

Review: Makanda Ken McIntyre’s debut is a heady, off-kilter joy: angular but lyrical, warm but structurally daring, full of left turns and sly tonal shifts. The Boston-born reedist recorded it in 1960 at Van Gelder Studio alongside fellow alto saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy — an inspired pairing, given their shared fondness for flutes, extended harmony and unusual form. Released the following year, it’s a document of two singular voices meeting in a moment of creative alignment. There’s fire and freedom here, but also poise: ‘Lautir’ is both jagged and dance-like, ‘Head Shakin’’ lurches between hypnotic vamp and free-swinging release, while the ballad ‘Dianna’ quietly aches. McIntyre’s originals hold their own next to the Gershwins’ ‘They All Laughed’, which gets a cheeky, bop-leaning spin. Walter Bishop Jr. brings a clear-headed lightness on piano, Sam Jones is solid and swinging on bass, and Art Taylor’s drumming balances control and fluidity, anchoring the group without ever damping their spark. At just over 44 minutes, the whole thing feels like a conversation in motion — thoughtful but unresolved, expressive but never showy. Still one of the sharpest and most compelling debuts of its era.

Review: The Original Jazz Classics Series turns its attention here to the one and only Miles Davis, who worked with his quintet for the boldly titled Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet album. This period back in the mid-50s was a halcyon one for Davis and jazz and for that reason the band is often called one of the best in jazz history. Alongside Davis on his trusty trumpet, John Coltrane was on tenor sax, with piano from Red Garland, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on the sticks. This new version of this classic record has been remastered from original analogue tapes and been pressed to 180g vinyl so its sounds superb.

Monk's Mood
Review: Wedged between the high points of Brilliant Corners and Monk's Music, Thelonious Monk's fourth Riverside outing marks a quieter yet pivotal chapter in his discog. Recorded in 1957, a transformative year for Monk, it hears the pianist almost entirely alone at the keyboard, chancing a rare but studious view into his inner compositional world. This session packs a deeply felt solo reading of ''Round Midnight', one of his most enduring pieces, not to mention the cloistered but still group-recorded cut 'Monk's Mood'; the latter track holds special historic significance, as it marks the first recorded appearance of John Coltrane with Monk, alongside unbeaten bassist Wilbur Ware. Though less boisterous than its neighbouring releases, this session reveals Monk in the away-with midsts of a rare creative "zone": distilled, raw, and searching.

Review: Released in 1960 on Riverside, The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery was recorded in just two days at Reeves Sound Studios in New York City. With a small group featuring Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Albert Heath on drums, this album showcases Montgomery's groundbreaking thumb-picking technique and use of octaves. Praised as the pinnacle of his studio work, the album was a game-changer on the US jazz scene and cemented Wes Montgomery as one of the era's most influential guitarists.

Review: At just 21, Lee Morgan was already a seasoned presence in jazz when he cut Here's Lee Morgan for Vee-Jay Records in early 1960. Joined by an impeccable quintet - tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Art Blakey on drums - the session shutters a fiery sonic snapshot of hard bop at its finest; and though the personnel lineup reads like a one-off, the interplay mirrors the energy and cohesion of a classic Jazz Messengers date. Morgan, fresh off stints with Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie, channels the melodic clarity of Clifford Brown while pushing toward his own more assertive voice. The album stands as a sharp document of a young artist already in command of his instrument, and of a group who, even outside their usual configurations, deliver a set swinging with power, raunch and finesse.

Review:  Legendary Brazilian musician Milton Nascimento is often hailed as one of Brazil's greatest ever musical exports and for this album, he collaborated with NPR's "21st Century's jazz genius," Esperanza Spalding. Milton + Esperanza is an album produced by Spalding and one that blends urgent and timeless sounds together into something interesting and new. The album features guest appearances by Dianne Reeves, Paul Simon, Lianne La Havas, and others while fusing Nascimento's enduring musical vision and Latin spirit with Spalding's innovative approach to jazz.

Review: Opa's Goldenwings returns to vinyl after 50 years, offering a remastered take on the 1976 fusion masterpiece that has long been a coveted gem among jazz-funk collectors. Released by Craft Recordings via Jazz Dispensary's Top Shelf series, this album showcases the legendary collaboration between the Fattoruso Brothers, Airto Moreira, and Hermeto Pascoal. Goldenwings blends Latin rhythms, intricate synth work, and lush vocal harmonies into an exhilarating fusion experience. Tracks like the funk-forward title track and the cosmic 'Totem' highlight Hugo Fattoruso's mastery of layered keyboards, while 'Corre NiNa' and 'African Bird' bring a joyful and folk-inspired energy. The album's centerpiece, 'Tombo,' features an impressive suite that leads into the dancefloor-ready closer, 'Groove.' With all-analogue mastering by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, this reissue offers a pristine listening experience, complete with the original album art. Goldenwings is a fresh discovery for a new generation of listeners so this reissue will be a much needed one.

Review: Originally released in 1973, this is the tenth album from jazz guitar legend Joe Pass, widely considered his finest hour. Featuring the Pass original 'Blues For Alican' alongside a selection of standards including ''Round Midnight', it's a showcase for Pass's virtuosity as a solo guitarist. Across two sides of vinyl, he weaves his way through a diverse repertoire, from the timeless elegance of 'Night & Day' and 'Stella By Starlight' to the soulful melancholy of 'Here's That Rainy Day' and the playful energy of 'How High The Moon'. Pass's playing is both technically dazzling and emotionally resonant, his fingers dancing across the fretboard with effortless grace. This new edition, part of the Original Jazz Classics Series, has been lovingly remastered from the original tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl too.

Review: There are few finer alto-sax players in the world than Art Pepper. By the time of his death run 1982 his legacy was already assured after a fantastic run of albums such as his standout Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section. Plus 11 is right up there too, though: the 1960 jazz record saw Art work with an ensemble of 11 other musicians arranged by Marty Paich. It's one of a number dates the two played together that year but the only one with Pepper leading. Pepper's clarinet performance on 'Anthropology' and the alternate takes of 'Walkin'' are real standouts.
