Review: Tyler Myroon AKA Abstrakt Sonance has released some of his most potent music since joining Truth's Deep, Dark and Dangerous label, so hopes are naturally high for this first missive for the imprint in two years. Title track 'Ishtar' is particularly potent, with the self-proclaimed "bass music force" wrapping clandestine chords and creepy melodies around punishing dubstep drums and gargantuan sub-bass. The EP's other instrumental cuts, 'Behind Closed Eyes' and 'Nightmares', offer deeper and hazier variations on a similarly bold and aggressive theme, while the two vocal cuts - and in particular opener 'We Nuh Pay', where Killa P, Long Range and Crowell trade verses - sound like future party-starting classics.

Review: Fent Plates keeps it utterly deep with this new selection, Slowed & Reverb Versions. It's the work of Aether and comes pressed on white marbled vinyl in mad limited numbers. The beats are seriously heady and kick off with heart aching vocal slurs stretched over a lazy rhythm. Elsewhere the likes of 'Should Have Known' is another codeine paced sub-aquatic crawl with heavy-hearted hits and linger, melancholic vocals drifting forlornly. 'Together We Will Live Forever' is a divine closer with delicate melodic droplets and more drowsy vocals sure to slow your pulse and chill you right out.

A Song For Hope
Review: Amazingly, this is the ninth album from experimental D&B veteran ASC. Those who've followed his career to date should know what to expect; an atmospheric and all-enveloping sound that uses traditional D&B rhythms and structures sparingly, instead flipping between clandestine electronica, IDM and shuffling ambience (see the crackly opener "Spheres", which recalls his recent work with fellow experimentalist Sam KDC on the Decayed Society LP). It's a fusion that delivers real quality, from the late night '90s vibes of "Glass Wall", and guitar-laden Balearica of "Oneironaut", to the beatless beauty of "A Song For Hope", technological grooves of "Prometheus", and glitchy oddness of "Stay True".

Review: The somewhat shadowy ATOS pairing of Amoys and Truenoys follow up their 2013 Deep Medi Musik debut with a self titled album that offers a more comprehensive representation of their fractured, soulful take on the nebulous bass music scene. Short for A Taste Of Struggle, the name alone should hint at some of the themes explored lyrically on this fifteen track album, as Amoys and Truenoys expound on a sound that sits somewhere between Massive Attack, Submotion Orchestra and Burial. Whilst there have been plenty of producers utilising sampled vocals within dubstep it's nice to see a duo attempt to adapt the framework to song writing to such atmospherically loaded effect.

Review: Bassnectar goes deep into his own take on dubstep here with a new album The Golden Rule on Amorphous Music. It comes across a triple selection of coloured vinyl and wastes no time in getting heavy. 'The Golden Rule' rides on saw tooth synths and slapping synths with 'Unlocked' (feat Rye Rye & Jamalski) bringing some vocal energy and 'I Am Another Yourself' then gets all screwy on some mad bass mutations. Elsewhere Bassnectar collaborates with Rebelwise on the exotic sounds of 'Prayer Song' and Hyper is peak time and maximal jump up for rave times only.

Optimism (4:41)
Review: Released just months ahead of the moment he stepped away from the music industry indefinitely in summer 2020, Bassnectar's All Colors album enjoys a surprising vinyl release. Sonically the album sees him re-exploring his hip-hop and west coast breaks roots with all manner of big swaggering grooves and sludgy basslines (see 'Rewind The Track' and 'Off The Grid') Elsewhere firing moments of EDM hype flare up throughout ('Uebok Gotta Run') and there's even time for a little fast lane D&B action ('Nice & Easy') Other highlights include the 8-bit euphoric likes of 'Rise & Shine' and the finale 'Optimism'. A colourful trip.

Review: James Blake's debut album is undoubtedly one of 2011's most keenly awaited releases, and its arrival via his own (major label funded) Atlas imprint ensures their is no lull in momentum for a producer who enjoyed a watershed 2010 with releases on Hessle Audio and R&S. The results here differ wildly from his previous sonic excursions - gone are the shimmering R&B soaked melodies of "CMYK" and the sheer experimentalism of the Klavierwerke EP, which saw the young Londoner depart from the confines of the dancefloor and enter a realm where there was only a passing reference to rhythm-based music. Instead we are treated to Blake's own yearning, raw voice, delicate pianos and an underlying sense of melancholy. Ubiquitous single "Limit To Your love" and the crackly sonic terrain evoked on "The Wilhelm Scream" are among the most immediately pleasing moments, but there is much to explore here. It's a fascinating opus and surely the catalyst to a long and fruitful career at the top.

Review: A heavyweight ensemble of drum & bass minds take on Break's most recent set of productions, pushing them deeper into system territory. The Bristol veteran revisits his own material alongside a dream team of remixers including Skeptical, Calyx, Mefjus and The Sauce, each adding distinct bite and tension to the originals. Alibi's flip of 'Headshot' is all murky propulsion and low-end snap, while L-Side draws out the yearning in 'Gunshot Love' with Liam Bailey's vocal laid over thick, heaving bass pressure. Charli Brix floats through Break's own icy rework of 'Lost', while SP:MC cuts through the dense, noir-streaked paranoia of Skeptical's 'Box Clever' edit. Clean but rough, emotive yet primed for damage, this is high-grade d&b from a cross-generational cast who know exactly how to thread vocals and subs without compromise.

Sounding so different, so removed and far away from anything else, it changed the game entirely - and created a whole school of imitators in its wake. Now repressed by Hyperdub, this is a rare opportunity to grab it on fresh wax. Review: Under the Calibre alias, Dom Martin has never been afraid to supplement his main drum & bass work with tracks that explore different musical styles. He's gone one step further on this album for Craig Richards' label, the Nothing Special. Stripped of all jungle intent, Grow impressively shuffles between jazzy future garage, hazy post-dubstep soundscapes, warm, breakbeat-driven grooves (the early Blu Mar Ten style bliss of "Thunder Fog"), throbbing futurist dub (the brilliant "Over The Top"), and, perhaps most surprisingly for those keen on D&B, four-to-the-floor deep house (the clandestine "Mention"). The fact that it's all rather good confirms what many in D&B already knew: that Martin is a hugely talented producer.

Review: St Albans-based Daniel Richmond has quietly built a solid reputation as a purveyor of woozy, atmospheric dubstep via a series of quality full-lengths. In the past, he's been compared to Burial, though Richmond's music and rhythms lack the paranoid, panic-stricken intensity associated with dubstep's self-styled man of mystery. There are some similarities, though, not least a love of subtle melodies, quietly upbeat compositions and wrong speed vocal cut-ups. This third album is arguably Richmond's most confident and swaggering, a typically robust set that fixes floor-friendly rhythms to his usual dreamy soundscapes.

Review: Given her current popularity, it's no surprise to see all-conquering house hero Maya Jane Coles mixing the latest instalment of !K7's long-running DJ Kicks series. The diminutive DJ/producer is in fine form, too, and here eight of her selections are presented across two slabs of vinyl The tracks are as deep, melodic and groovy as you'd expect, with a strong vocal theme running throughout. Stand-out cuts here come from T Willliams ("Analog Tour") and Caribou (his thrilling remix of Virgo Four). A neat vinyl-shaped accompaniment to the mix itself.

Review: Dom Tarasek aka Commodo has already appeared on perhaps the biggest dubstep labels around, and he made his name from the string of releases on Mala's Deep Medi Muzik - not exactly a bad place to start your career, that's for sure. However, he's now branching out to other quality households, and this new LP on Black Acre feels just right in every single way. Right because his deep, brooding sound fits ever so well with the rest of the label, and right because How What Time flows perfectly as an album unit. There are three tunes on each side of the two slabs of wav, and they work as perfect, tidy trios that carry the same sort of leftward bass sound, one that never goes to deep as to become abstract, but also never gets too violent as to become silly. All in all, it is masterfully executed dubstep for the 2016 palate. Killer.

Review: Hyperdub's year of excellence continues apace with the release of Playing Me, the long awaited debut album from Cooly G. Emerging as a key figure in the UK funky scene some four years ago via some highly prized Dub Organiser CDrs, Cooly's musical progression has been charted via a series of EPs for DVA Music and Hyperdub. On this thirteen track album what is most apparent is the confidence this South London producer has in her own singing, a voice that sounds dipped in pain and anguish at times. At others Cooly utilises her vocal delivery as an integral part of the music, which draws from all manner of UK music history of recent times whilst very much sounding part of her modern house template. Oh and there's a Coldplay cover to end the LP too...

Review: Danny Scrilla and Kromestar on an eight-track mini album flex. We're not sure what we've done to deserve this but we'll take every ounce of its cosmic majesty while we can. Every bit as spacious, dreamy, innovative and barbed with contrast as you'd hope; highlights include the triumphant classical drama of "Superconductor", the super-warped trippiness of "Like Thunder", the staccato 22nd century grime theatre of "Hive" and the toxic Ivy Lab-style sludge of "Fractions"... But let's face it, the whole darn thing is a highlight. In the field of cosmic bass and weirdstep, collabos don't get any better than this.

Review: Amid much anticipation, Distal's album crash lands on Tectonic in a myriad of electronic styles all thoroughly typical of the plucky Atlantan. There's raw juke-isms on "Preach On Hustle", where the Chicago style gets slowed down and spread out, while on "Around The Fire" you'll find a swung techno framework full of alluring melodies just under the surface. There's melodica-baiting dubstep on "Rattlesnake", while electro gets pitched down for the peak time banger "House Party Five". Everywhere you turn, Distal's supremely developed production stands out, whatever vibe he's turning his hand to. In the end, that skill becomes the glue that holds this free ranging album together.

Review: When it comes to dubstep, Distance (AKA DJ/producer Greg Sanders) has pretty much done it all. Since making his debut in 2003, he's released two fine albums on Planet Mu, mixed a volume of the Dubstep Allstars series, and laid down a string of killer 12" singles. With this history in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising that Dynamis, his first full-length for Tectonic, sees him look further afield or inspiration. While heavyweight sub-bass and the rhythmic swagger of dubstep remain at the heart of his productions, the album also incorporates elements of dubstep, experimental electronica, IDM, electro, ambient, and even Nine Inch Nails style fuzz-rock intensity.
