Review: Genesis' 1974 release stands as a cornerstone of progressive rock, blending evocative storytelling with layered, intricate arrangements. Peter Gabriel's vocals on what would be his final album with the giants bring the narrative to life, shifting from the reflective tones of 'The Carpet Crawlers' to the defiant energy of 'Back in N.Y.C.'. The instrumentation is equally vividiTony Banks' keyboards set an atmospheric tone, while Phil Collins' dynamic drumming anchors the complex shifts in rhythm and mood. The interplay between Steve Hackett's guitar and Mike Rutherford's bass adds depth to the sprawling soundscapes, delivering a record that still resonates with its bold ambition and emotional scope.

Review: He's played with everyone from Bowie, Lou Reed and Lennon - just the tip of a truly humungous session work iceberg - as well as his longstanding service with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, but Tony Levin's more than capable of whipping up a musical storm without any celebrity help. This is the bassist's latest solo affair, released in September 2024 and, together with a lengthy list of collaborators - among them KC guitarist Robert Fripp - it bends jazz, funk, rock and experimental soundscapery into numerous new shapes. 'Give The Cello Some' is a delight, answering the question "what kind of music would ZZ Top make if they were fronted by Captain Beefheart?" 'Road Dogs' kicks off half metal riffing, half Krautrock linear grooving before hitting a prog/jazz interface and 'Beyond The Bass Clef' is a serene, beatless, almost classical piece. Full of surprises, this is the sound of a master of the bass game following no-one else's lead for a change - and loving every moment.

Review: Released in July 1971, Harmony Row marked a bold step further into the post-Cream creative world of bassist Jack Bruce. Building on the stylistic breadth of his earlier solo release Songs For A Tailor, the album shakes up jazz, folk, rock, classical, and Eastern influences into a poignantly expansive, socially aware sound, with Chris Spedding (he of Sex Pistols demos fame) on guitar and John Marshall on drums. Bruce, meanwhile, assumed most other roles, from handling vocals, piano, organ, bass, and cello to sculpt what has since become known as one of his crowning achievements. This deluxe box set includes the newly remastered original mix alongside fresh stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound mixes by Stephen W Tayler, sourced from the original 16-track masters. It also features unreleased demos and session outtakes, a 1971 TV performance with Graham Bond, a 1972 German documentary, and an in-depth essay by Sid Smith.

Hergest Ridge (50th Anniversary)
Cat: V2013 50LP. Rel: 27 Jun 25
Review: Following the 2023 reissue of Tubular Bells, another Mike Oldfield gem Hergest Ridge now returns in a special anniversary edition with new artwork and sleeve notes approved by Oldfield himself, The release marks the first time both the 1974 original and the 2010 remix appear together on vinyl. The album was created in rural Herefordshire after the unexpected success of Tubular Bells and so captures Oldfield's retreat into nature and introspection. It was composed when he was just 21 and blends lush, pastoral soundscapes into two immersive suites that reflect a young artist balancing musical ambition with a desire for solitude.

Review: Hailing from Herne Bay in the south east of England, Kevin Ayers emerged as a pioneering figure in the nearby Canterbury scene. His second solo release with the Whole World is a testament to the experimental spirit of early 70s UK music, mixing progressive rock with psychedelia and avant-garde influences, blending whimsical ballads and intricate soundscapes. Tracks like 'May I?' and 'Rheinhardt & Geraldine' show off his knack for fusing carefree melodies with more experimental structures, while 'Underwater' and 'Clarence in Wonderland' explore the era's boundary-pushing approach to sound. Featuring contributions from Mike Oldfield and Robert Wyatt, the record's genre-defying nature helped cement Ayers as a key figure in progressive rock. Though originally released in 1970, this album remains an influential work, still resonating with contemporary artists drawn to its mix of playfulness and musical innovation.

Review: German progressive rockers Everon have returned after 16 years, led as ever by guitarist and vocalist Oliver Philipps. Known for their intricate melodies and deft fusion of classic prog rock with a modern sensibility, the band's latest offering showcases their signature sound that made them stand out in the late 90s and early 2000s. Despite the years apart, the group's musical chemistry remains intact, with their technical prowess and Philipps' emotive voice providing a solid foundation. However, this reunion comes with a heavy heart as recording process was marred by the sudden death of drummer and co-founder Christian Moos. The poignant 'Until We Meet Again' serves as a tribute with lyrics reflecting the sorrow of losing a close bandmate. Tracks like 'Travels' and 'Broken Angels' continue to embody Everon's knack for melodic rock with progressive flourishes, while 'Pinocchio's Nose' and 'Guilty As Charged' show their ability to mix heavier, more complex arrangements with accessibility. The band's blend of the epic and personal, coupled with their finely tuned musicianship, makes this a compelling return after such a long hiatus.
