Review: Initially released in 2020 as part of the Sub Pop single series and following on from their harrowing and epic fourth LP May You Be Held, this monolithic 18-minute cut from sludge/post-metal supergroup trio Sumac was originally pressed on a 7" which couldn't fit the track on a single side, leading to it being split into two halves. Now the lengthy opus finally receives a 12" one-sided repress, allowing for total immersion into the trudging heft, heaving doom, caustic drone and perplexing free jazz flourishes which all arise. Made up of Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists), Brian Cook (Russian Circles, These Arms Are Snakes, Botch) and Aaron Turner (Mamiffer, Old Man Gloom, Isis), Sumac have grown into a uniquely vicious entity all of their own prowess with Two Beasts serving as a high watermark of their grandiose heaviness and visionary approach.
