Review: Few have ever matched the rawness and visceral hip-hop energy of the Beastie Boys, have they? To catch them live is no doubt one of the most explosive musical experiences of the last 50 years. If you never have, fear not, because an album like this one takes you back in time to be there in the flesh, in this case at Club Citta in Kawasaki, Japan in September 1992. It was a performance broadcast live on radio and it comes now on nice heavyweight vinyl with plenty of lesser-known tunes in amongst some of the bigger moments. A real must for collectors and fans alike.

Review: Is there any need to give an album of this stature the hype treatment? The Beastie Boys bowled into the 90s with one of their most monumental deliveries of their career on this, their third studio album. The second that crunchy break kicks in on 'Jimmy James' and Mixmaster Mike starts flaring on the decks, you know you're getting the absolute real deal. From the low down rap cuts to the instrumental psych outs, weirdo interludes and all out bombs, the Beasties showed the world what they were truly capable of. Do yourself a favour, cop a classic, given a true heavyweight reissue treatment across four big ol' slabs of wax with all the trimmings this record deserves.

Review: Time has been kinder on the Beastie Boys' first and most explosive hip-hop album than many would have thought at the time. Their combination of snotty nosed brat rapping and Rick Rubin's trademark production, combining raw, meaty breaks and metal riffs, was assumed to be a flash in the pan back then, but rather a fad it would turn out to be the inaugural offering in a stream of classic albums that would delight heads and also recruit millions of new fans over to the genre's side. Massive breakthrough hit '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)' is here , of course, but the tracks that sound the freshest now are the mean and lean 'No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn', 'Hold It Now, Hit It' and opening track 'Rhymin & Stealin', powered by beats originated by Led Zep's John Bonham. A laugh, yes, but seriously good at the same time.

Review: Beastie Boys Music is a new greatest hits compilation album that serves as a companion to 2020's Spike Jonze-directed Beastie Boys Story and 256-page photo book, Beastie Boys Book. The double vinyl affair takes in 20 classic tracks that span the iconic group's more than 30 year career, with the biggest of the big such as 'No Sleep', 'Sabotage' and 'Intergalactic' all making the cut. By now these are well worn classics, but their impact on rap cannot be overstated, and the tunes still get any party banging thanks to the immediacy of the beats and sharpness of the rhymes.

Review: "The Mix Up" is the new album by the Beastie Boys. For the first time every track is an instrumental. This spits hot fire! Mike D said that "even though The Mix-Up is a "post-punk instrumental" album, the Beasties have no plans to ditch vocals for good". In fact, they are currently planning another version of the album that will feature collaborations with "a pretty wide array" of "mostly newer" vocalists! Check, check it out.

Paul's Boutique (by Dan LeRoy)
Cat: 428432 Rel: 01 Jan 90
Notes: This short book is a history of the making of the second album released by The Beastie Boys, which was a pioneering masterwork of sampling-based music. It documents both the legal and social conflicts around the recording of an album, and the specific concerns raised by music that samples other music. The album would not be legally recordable today, and indeed its legality was nebulous even in 1989.

Alongside the funny stories, gossip, and the interesting depiction of mid-1980s New York and Los Angeles music scenes, the most interesting narrative is the account of the creative practices that led to the album, which have little to do with the standard story of lone geniuses or teamwork between a tightly knit group with clearly-defined roles. The producers, collaborators, sound engineers, performers, and the actual sound-samples all intertwine and interact within the social and musical milieus of regional club cultures, art, and music in complex and storied ways.

Left unexamined is the relationship between their practices and the standard texts of contracts between the parties that allocate various rights, royalties and fees: these details are only mentioned when they are a source of tension.
However, for people interested in how creativity actually works, and how significant (some would say great) works of art are created, it is a splendid account of the complexities that make copyright law an odd fit and a source of tension.
