Review: Elizabeth Madox Roberts' The Time Of Man (1926) is an episodic modern novel, tracing the life of Ellen Chesser, the daughter of poor white tenant farmers in rural Kentucky. Roberts treats the main character's movement through different landscapes and seasons waveringly, grappling with poverty, loss, love, and the push-pull between solitude and connection by way of a lytic narrative that shifts and resolves atemporally. Biosphere's new record carries the transmission chain further, naming itself after the novel while interspersing its hiss-topped drum machine actions with vocal snippets from Joan Lorring's radio play version. Review: Few have the depth and breadth of knowledge about music that Anglesey-based punk historian and author Jon Savage has, so to delve into the themed compilation he has put together is an education. Sticking to the idea of doing a musical voyage through the theme and idea of Space, Savage has clearly hit the brief. The Byrds 'C.T.A' sounds like an alien encounter; Devo's 'Space Junk' is quite timely in a lyrical sense, since experts are saying space is becoming a new frontier for war and there's satellite jams. There are some classics that you'd expect here - like Sun Ra - and it's great seeing leftfield icons Wooden Shjips included with their mesmerising cut 'Space Clothes' as theirs is contemporary psychedelia at its finest.

Review: Organic Analogue returns with a rediscovery of Beppu's rare dubbed-out electronica and circuit-bent techno. Andrew Hargreaves is the Manchester-based producer behind this alias which was first making waves back in the late-2000s. Back then it was three limited CDr EPs in 2009, which came with just 50 copies each, that made a stir and still stand up today. As such, the sought-after recordings receive a proper vinyl pressing and have been mastered by Miles Whittaker. Two distinct remixes from Demdike Stare also add further quality and contemporary context to the origins, which blend dub techno and braindance with textured noise. Review: False Aralia is a popular houseplant native to Taiwan but also the name of this new experimental label which has got us intrigued. We don't know who or what Iri Gram is but we do know having listened to this that they make intricately designed dub, minimal, ambient and sound art fusions that sound like nothing else but also conjur up familiar feelings and nostalgia for forgotten memories. All four are couched in dub with wispy melodies and frayed edges, smudged surfaces and poly rhythms that range from slow and bubbly to more urgent and fractured. They all endlessly mutate and leave you lost in a whole new sound world but wanting more.

Review: Cape Town ambient producer Jason van Wyk pares his sound down to its barest, most expressive elements, doing sound justice to the name Inherent (though he's always interested in ideas of transparency and simplicity, with the similarly themed Opacity dropping on Home Normal in 2017). He now leans into stillness in motion, folding ghost-traced piano lines and gauzy drones into long, slow exhalations, where just when things threaten to dissolve entirely, he rejigs the frame. Brittle guitars now creak in, synth arps flicker like faulty neon, rhythms emerge with princely precision. It's not a departure so much as a consolidation, as van Wyk revisits old tools with rewed restraint, preferring unembellished ambiences. Like the innate returns of close reading, we're invited to closely listen here, since glints of detail glister just below the surface.

Review: There is a delightful lightness of touch to these deep dubwise explorations on the newly emerging False Aralia label, set up by Brian Foote, who founded US leftfield institution Peak Oil. Drums lap like gentle waves, synths unfurl as softly as passing clouds and smudged, ghostly vocals from Loveshadow's Anya Prisk bring romance. 'Externalism 02' is brilliantly wistful - barely there pads hint at emotional pain but dissipate before you hurt too much. 'Externalism 03' is a more lo-fi and minimal work with shuffling drums and murky low ends coalescing into a tender and bubbling soundscape then 'Externalism 04' is a sonic collage that is always shifting its focus from flickering candles to blurry pads. Hugely experimental but warmly comforting sounds.

Review: Longfound Norweigan friends Erik Skodvin and Otto Totland pair as Deaf Center, a duo whose name plays cleverly on the notion of good hearing depending on a core of silence. Resurfacing from such nucleic muteness after five years, their new pair of extended pieces, Reverie, finds a disquiet daydream drawn from a rare live set transmitted in October 2024 at Morphine Raum, Berlin. Their first publication since 2019, it sees them in the fullest unconscious "zone", improvising, responding, encircling each other in real time. Smears of timestretched piano abound on 'Rev', while 'Erie' shoots for overtonal tension on an implied, rippling lakeshore. The music is at once gargantuan and contained, revolutionarily collapsing binaries of big and small.

Review: Serbia's Abul Mogard inaugurates his Soft Echoes imprint - after many a career-spanning stopover with Ecstatic, VCO and Light-years - with Quiet Pieces, an inward-looking suite unearthing stillness and submerged emotions scraped from the edges of memory. Assembled from archival sketches and fragments inspired by a late uncle's collection of 78rpm classical and opera records, the album reimagines faded moments through manipulated samples played at altered speeds, filtered through effects, and folded into new compositions. The result is a dream-static fusion of past and present, where Mogard's own recollections blur with an avuncular other's. The pieces shimmer with spectral density and tactile distortion, edging into abstractions influenced in part by Phill Niblock's Boston Tenor Index; Mogard pushes into rawer and rawer dissonances over the record's course. Marja de Sanctis's cover photograph, taken at the Temple of Jupiter Anxur, captures that same interplay of decay, reverence, and resonance.

Review: The twelfth studio release from Manchester duo Marconi Union reaffirms why they remain such a quietly vital force in ambient music. Formed in 2003, the pair's latest work arrives after a two-year process of reorientation i one that saw them scrap old habits, test new material live, and ultimately return to the atmospheric instinct that first defined them. The result is a seamless 55-minute composition split into nine movements: fluid, immersive, and full of emotional nuance. It's a brand new release that spans sequencer-driven passages, low-lit drone work and impressionistic electronics, all stitched together with an elegant sense of pacing. 'Eight Miles High Alone', the first piece completed and shared publicly, sets the tone with a solitary pulse and slow-building tension i its clarity and weightlessness shaping much of what follows. The music unfolds without force, evoking both disquiet and release. Though wordless, the journey speaks volumes. A sense of modern anxiety hovers throughout, yet it's counterbalanced by warmth, space and stillness. Review: Originally released in 2015, this reissue returns to the stunning debut full-length from Canadian electroacoustic composer Sarah Davachi, who is rapidly becoming a big deal in the world of experimental sounds. Emerging from brief but acclaimed releases on labels like Important Records' Cassauna and Full Spectrum, this album marked her as a unique voice within the world of minimalist and experimental sound. Trained at Mills College, Davachi's work reflects a deep understanding of synthesis and acoustic instrumentation, with a focus on patience, atmosphere and tone over flashy modular theatrics. Rather than overwhelming the listener with density, Davachi builds a deep listening album full of impressive tracks. Vintage synths like the Buchla 200, EMS Synthi and Prophet 5 provide an enveloping tonal palette that reveal the composer's intent to create a more intimate, hybrid sonic language. The opening track 'heliotrope' unfolds like smoke rising into a high ceiling, shimmering with evolving harmonic detail. 'wood green' moves from near-silence to a radiant calm. An album of introspection and careful design in a world of maximalist electronics, a rare piece of compositional grace. Its return in reissue form feels not only deserved but necessary.

Review: Its creator vanishing shortly after its 1978 release, SAB's Crystallization has quietly gathered a mythic status among collectors of Japanese ambient and environmental music (like you). Recorded in Osaka by a then 19-year-old "recluse" who later vanished into the Rajneesh movement in the US, the album remains to this day his only release, an unclaimed vapour dispatch of eerie, home-recorded precision. Though touched by the spectral fingerprints of Eno and the Obscure label, SAB's blend of synths, field recordings and classical motifs doesn't follow any clear school or tradition. This new edition, transferred directly from the original tapes in 24bit/48kHz, represents an early forerunner of the Kankyo Ongaku movement, in which there is renewed interest.

Review: SoiSong, the collaborative project of Ivan Pavlov (CoH) and Brit industrial music royalty Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle, Coil), was a brief but enduring exploration of electronica's least charted realms. Coming to in 2007, the duo fused Pavlov's raw digital landscapes and Christopherson's dark, whimsical touch, bringing a bold debut and stark break from convention, blending artificial vocals with live drums, jazz noir with tropical textures, and synthetic sounds. The boundaries of genre are brushed up against, with tracks like 'Dtorumi' and 'J3z' pushing the limits of post-90s electronic experimentation. A new mix of 'Lom Tum Lai Kwee', meanwhile, adds a hallucinatory grandeur, while the closer, 'Ti-Di-Ti Naoo', evokes transformations from rehearsal to performance.

Review: There isn't much info out there about this new and super limited ambient excursion from Mystery Circles, which leaves us only with the music. It's a charming and organic world of sound with lingering trumpet notes stretched out to infinity over textural motifs and sustained chords that are both melancholic and tinged with danger. Sometimes it's abstract sound design like on 'Glass & Steel' that gets the attention, at others more sweeping and traditional ambient like on 'Sounds From Light, Still In Darkness', but either way, this one is seriously arresting.

Review: Deaf Center's debut LP gets a 20-year anniversary reissue on CD, pairing the original 2005 album with 20 minutes of unreleased material from the same sessions. Originally out on Type, Pale Ravine marked the first full-length by Erik K Skodvin and Otto A Totland, who've since carved solo paths via Sonic Pieces. Drifting between chamber composition, shadowy electronics and the hiss of old tape, the record draws on their Norwegian roots and personal family histories. Grainy textures, ghostly pianos and wind-blown field recordings conjure a mood somewhere between forgotten reels of silent film and weather-worn Nordic folklore.
