What A Problem
What A Problem (limited 12")
Cat: MH 220. Rel: 12 Jun 23
What A Problem (6:57)
Version (3:04)
Review: Horace Andy dropped one of his most well-known cuts back in 1987. It's a lovely rootsy dancehall skank in the form of 'What A Problem' that he produced himself alongside Michael Taylo and Andy Bassford. His mic work is exceptional as he twists and turns his vocals to ride on top of the drums and deliver his message with style and grace in his textbook smooth vocal tone. The version on the flip drills down into darker and more gritty dancehall vibes with the fat bassline front and centre next to plenty of echo and reverb.

Review: George Dekker was born Canic Agard in Jamaica in 1946 and went on to have a remarkable career in reggae. Despite the similar name, he is not related to Desmond Dekker, and his own career took off in the late 60s with The Pioneers who achieved international success and were among the first Jamaican acts to hit the European charts. Alongside his work with the group, he released notable solo tracks like 'Foey Man' and 'Try Love' and has collaborated with producers such as Leslie Kong and Bunny Lee. His new solo album, Right To Be Here on The Blue Beat Label, features renowned producers Mafia and Fluxy and is steeped in signature sounds and timeless reggae class.

Rise & Shine
Cat: HS 7001. Rel: 06 Nov 23
El Indio - "Rise & Shine" (3:46)
Lone Ark Riddim Force - "Rise & Dub" (3:47)
Review: Some proper sound system business here that deserves to be played nice and loud. El Indio's 'Rise & Shine' was recorded and mixed by Roberto Sanchez at A-Lone Ark Muzik Studio in Spain and is drench din sun. The horns are lazy and convey the feelings of a humid afternoon, while the vocals implore you to give all you can give and keep on rising. Interestingly they were recorded by Douglas Wardrop at Conscious Sounds Studios in London but sit perfectly in the mix. Lone Ark Riddim Force step up on the flip with their own lush dub which has plenty of effects and delay.

African Children (3:23)
African Dub (3:30)
Review: The Heptones are as esteemed as it comes when talking about dub and reggae. They were big dogs in the 1970s and brought an always soulful sound to their roots when the genre was already at its most vital and genuine. They also came with profound lyrics that resonate to this day next to their harmonious melodies and pressing conscious messages. Now for the first time their iconic 'African Child' comes on 7" directly from the legendary world of Jack Ruby. A heavier dub takes up the just as vital B-side.

Jason White

Loic Paulin & The SOA - "Jason White" (2:45)
Mellowmood & The SOA - "Poor Jason Dub" (2:47)
Review: Sound Of Thunder outta France lands at release number ten here with another gorgeous slice of lovers rock on 45rpm. It features contemporary producers and vocalists Loic Paulin & The SOA offering up A-side single 'Jason White'. At less than three minutes it is the definition of short but sweet but in that time it manages to make its mark with the yearning vocals really hitting home next to nice heat-damaged organ chords and a classic reggae rhythm. On the flip, Mellowmood spins out the sounds via plenty of mixing desk tweaks on his version 'Poor Jason Dub'.
