Review: Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong came together first of all for their 1956 album Ella and Louis. Just a year later, the enduring jazz icons hooked up once more on Verve Records for the simply titled Ella and Louis Again. It was recorded at Radio Recorders and Capitol Studios in Hollywood and where their first album was all duets, this one features seven solo vocal tracks by either Armstrong or Fitzgerald amongst its dozen duet tracks. Louis only played trumpet on six of these tunes but there was such a vibe between the two artists that it was never seen as an issue.

Review: Following the extraordinary mainstream success of jazz legend Stan Getz's bossa nova era, he dropped this album produce by Creed Taylor. To this day, Sweet Rain stands out as an exceptional straight-ahead jazz album and it features an impressive young band including pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate. The album radiates vibrant energy that inspired Getz to reach new expressive heights and Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series presents this classic with analog tape transfers and remastered 180-gram vinyl, all packaged in deluxe gatefold format.

Review: The plainspoken title Previously Unheard Recordings was given to Stan Getz and Bill Evans' six-track set of rarities back in 1974. The result of a recording session completed over ten years earlier in 1963, all the pieces heard here shine bright lights on the pianist and saxophonist's synergistic powers, and come backed by auxiliary instrumental incantations from two bassists, Ron Carter and Richard Davis, as well as drumming by Elvin Jones. Emblematic of the cool jazz style, the overgirding mood is one of time-lapsed delight and lightness of being, but yet which is not fearful of life's downer moments; this loyalty to jazz's complexity of mood can be heard all the way from 'Night And Day' or the closing 'Grandfather's Waltz'.

Review: There remains great interest in the work of Astrud Gilberto, and much of it is being freshly remastered and pressed up on a constant basis. Her Look To The Rainbow is a captivating journey into the realms of what she did in the bossa nova and jazz. Released in 1966, it showcases Gilberto's ethereal vocals floating effortlessly over lush arrangements as tracks transport listeners to sun-kissed beaches with their infectious rhythms and melodic charm. Gilberto's voice often exudes a tender elegance, while the title track 'Look To The Rainbow' radiates with hope and optimism. With its seamless blend of Brazilian flair and jazz sensibility, this album remains a timeless classic.

Turnaround (20:17)
Review: In this newly reissued collection of bass-led duets, the great Charlie Haden collaborates with Don Cherry who plays trumpet and flute, Archie Shepp on tenor, pianist Hampton Hawes, and trumpeter Ornette Coleman across four tracks. Hawes' performance on the Ornette-penned 'Turnaround' stands out as a straight-ahead highlight on this exploratory album, although the other three are also standout works that offer plenty to get stuck into. Released as part of the generally excellent Verve By Request series, this one is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man in Detroit so sounds magnificent.

Originally released in the midst of the vibrant 60s jazz scene, the album showcases Hamilton's exceptional talent as a drummer and bandleader, with a seamless blend of jazz, funk, and soul, dynamic rhythms and melodic improvisations. It came in 1996 on the Verve label and is the sound of the great American musicians offering up his own jazz renditions of classic and more contemporary rock and r&b tunes. The star-studded sextet also features saxophonist Michael Brecker, guitarist John Scofield, bassist Dave Holland, percussionist Don Alias and drummer Jack DeJohnette with some of the original tunes by the likes of Peter Gabriel, Prince, Kurt Cobain and Stevie Wonder.

Review: Released on the Cadet label in 1968, The Peace-Maker was the first of ten collaborations between the great tenor saxophonist Harold Land and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. With a group including pianist Joe Sample, the session results in a lively, lyrical, and high-quality jam. Critically hailed "one of the finest if little-known jazz LPs of its era" by AllMusic, the album is an impressionistic bask in the joys of composition, replete with affecting jaunts such as 'Angel Dance'. This Verve title is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man in Detroit.

Review: Johnny Hartman's I Just Dropped By to Say Hello, now reissued on 180-gram vinyl via Verve By Request, is a testament to his exceptional vocal artistry. Known for his deep, velvety baritone, Hartman delivers a collection of intimate ballads with impeccable enunciation and emotional depth. Standouts include 'Wee Small Hours of the Morning' and 'Sleepin' Bee', where Hartman's voice is smooth, relaxed and rich, free from the harshness that can plague lesser pressings. Recorded by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, this album benefits from his masterful engineering, with every nuance of Hartman's voice and the supporting ensemble sounding pristine. The stellar musicianship includes Hank and Elvin Jones on piano and drums, Milt Hinton on bass and guitarists Kenny Burrell and Jim Hall. Illinois Jacquet's tenor sax adds further texture to several tracks. Often overshadowed by Hartman's work with John Coltrane, this album stands on its own as a jazz vocal masterpiece. The warm, natural sound of this reissue makes it an essential addition to any collection, demonstrating the enduring magic of Hartman's voice and Van Gelder's brilliant production.

Backed by the exceptional Oscar Peterson Trioifeaturing Ed Thigpen on drums and Ray Brown on bassiHenderson more than holds his own. His rich, expressive voice brings new depth to classics like 'All or Nothing at All' and 'You Are My Sunshine' which font his unique style and vast emotional range. Rather than being overshadowed by his legendary accompanists, Henderson rises to the occasion which helps make this a standout gem in vocal jazz.

Review: Freddie Hubbard's final release for Impulse was The Body & The Soul, an album he released in 1963 and that features both an all-star septet and a string orchestra. Hubbard originals feature and showcase notable musicians such as Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone, Cedar Walton on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. This release stands out in Hubbard's fine discography and highlights Wayne Shorter's exceptional arranging skills, all now pressed up to 180-gram vinyl at Third Man in Detroit.

Verve are focusing on Coltrane's live albums in particular; 'Crescent' almost certainly tops 'Live At The Village Vanguard', again featuring the unparalleled performative chops of Trane's fellow jazz peers McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones - his Classic Quartet. Across only 5 tracks, the fab four achieve every possible blue-noted peak and trough, from extended trumpet, piano ('Bessie's Blues') and drum ('The Drum Thing') solos.

Review: Verve By Request repress Elvin Jones and Richard Davis' Heavy Sounds, one of the few recorded collaborations between the drummer and bassist ever laid to disc. The title is debatable if not misleading, as we'd wager that most listeners would typify this record as decidedly 'light' in feel. Recorded for Impulse in 1967, a session originally intended to be a trio date morphed into an 11 1/2-minute duet, on the album Summertime, between drummer Jones and bassist Davis, after the guitarist did not appear. The following day, saxophonist Frank Foster and pianist Billy Greene joined in to round out the rest of the cuts including 'Elvin's Guitar Blues', which features Jones' only recorded guitar performance.

Review: At just 22, Samara Joy is still rather young to be kicking it in the jazz world. It's a genre that requires life to be lived somewhat before real emotions can be distilled into the mic. However, here she makes her Verve debut and showcases a voice that evokes great legends of the genre like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Her phrasing, tone and vocal control place her among these icons despite her youth and Samara's voice, already rich with timeless elegance, carries the weight of jazz's history while still feeling remarkably fresh and exciting. With this remarkable debut, she is surely poised to become a defining figure in jazz music.

Captured over three days, the album features her touring band of young, rising jazz musicians, delivering a collection that blends timeless standards with new originals. For the first time, Samara delves into lyric writing, adding a personal touch to the album. Her remarkable voice shines throughout, accompanied by tight-knit arrangements and performances from her band, reflecting the camaraderie and energy they've built on the road. The album serves as a studio snapshot of their live performances, bringing to life the musical community she's fostered with her peers. Since her self-titled debut in 2021, Samara Joy has garnered widespread attention. Her second album, Linger Awhile, hit number one on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. With this new release, Samara continues to fulfill her vast promise with her future potential as a leading voice in jazz.

Review: Kenny Burrell's A Night At The Vanguard shows the jazz guitarist at the height of his powers, supported by an exceptional trio featuring Richard Davis on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. Recorded live in 1959 at New York's Village Vanguard, the album captures Burrell's spirited yet relaxed performance, blending elements of blues and bebop seamlessly. Burrell's technique shines throughout the album, effortlessly navigating chord solos and single-note runs with precision. Tracks like 'All Night Long' and 'Broadway' stand out, displaying Burrell's impeccable sense of swing and mastery of the guitar. Haynes's dynamic drumming adds depth to the trio's sound, particularly on the energetic rendition of 'Well You Needn't. The vinyl pressing, handled by Third Man in Detroit, delivers a clean sound, allowing Burrell's music to shine. The accompanying photographs by Francis Wolff add an extra layer of authenticity to the package, making it a worthy addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection. Overall, A Night At The Vanguard is a superb example of Kenny Burrell's talent and influence as a jazz guitarist, reaffirming his status as one of the genre's most iconic voices.

Review: Kerouac's third and final album, originally released on the Verve label in 1960, saw him ditching the jazz accompaniment that its two predecessors - Poetry for the Beat Generation and Blues and Haikus - boasted, instead concentrating on the musicality of his craft in its rawest form. One critic at the time even likened his voice to a saxophone in full flow. Readings from several of Kerouac's famous works Desolation Angels, San Francisco Blues and his landmark novel On the Road are included among the mesmerising selection here, all delivered direct from the source.

Review: This session captures multi-instrumentalist Roland at a pivotal point in his career, shifting from Verve's jazz-centric domain to the broader, more commercially attuned Atlantic Records. This shift in label mirrors the album's approach, melding hard bop, r&b, pop and Latin influences into a refined yet emotionally charged recording. Stripped of excess, the interplay between piano, bass and drums offer a taut yet expressive foundation, allowing the lead instrument's voice to alternate between fiery intensity and delicate introspection. The album's compositions reflect the artist's expansive range, moving from simmering blues to modal explorations, each piece showcasing a unique facet of his musical identity. At its heart, a deeply affecting ballad stands out, its after-hours melancholy that hits all the right notes. In contrast, rhythm-driven pieces pulse with kinetic energy, bursting with sharp phrasing and infectious grooves. 'Fallout', tinged with bossa nova influence, juxtaposes playfulness with restraint, while 'Alfie' reimagines a beloved pop standard, reshaping its familiar contours into something bold and brassy. A vital document of an artist stretching his reach, bridging accessibility with deep musicianship. The balance of exuberance and restraint, structure and improvisation, makes it an engaging listen. For those that know it well, an underappreciated yet essential piece of his music catalogue.

Review: Originally released in 2016, now reissued All for You (A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio) by Diana Krall remains a timeless tribute to the legendary Nat King Cole Trio. In this album, Krall masterfully blends her piano and vocal talents, evoking the spirit of Cole without directly mimicking him. Standout tracks include the lively 'I'm an Errand Girl for Rhythm,' 'Frim Fram Sauce,' and 'Hit That Jive Jack,' where her playful energy shines. Russell Malone's guitar work adds a rich layer, particularly in his standout solos. Krall's interpretations of ballads like 'I'm Through With Love' and 'If I Had You' reveal an influence reminiscent of Shirley Horn, adding depth and emotion. Supported by bassist Paul Keller and joined by pianist Benny Green and percussionist Steve Kroon on select tracks, the album's sound is both consistent and intimate, perfectly suited to Krall's style. Without the orchestral embellishments of her later work, this album highlights her jazz roots. All for You stands as one of Krall's finest achievements and a proper tribute to an all time legend.

Review: La Clave's self-titled album from 1973 is a refreshing mix of Latin rhythms and the vibrant sounds of the city of San Francisco. Formed by nine musicians from Mexico, Panama, Cuba and Puerto Rico with Benny Velarde at the helm, the group blended their rich cultural backgrounds with the soulful and experimental music scene of the Bay Area during that period. This unique mix created a joyful, energetic sound that still lures you in to this day, which is why this mini-classic gets reissued as part of the Verve By Request series.

Review: 1997's Slow Traffic to the Right found Bennie Maupin navigating between cerebral jazz and deep funk with style and ease. Though generally known for his abstract leanings and serious musical demeanour, here he showed a lighter side - not least because he is actually smiling on the album cover - while diving into grooves shaped by his time with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. With help from rhythm masters like Mike Clark and Paul Jackson, Maupin swaps out ECM austerity for signature Oakland bounce, so tracks like 'It Remains to Be Seen' and 'You Know the Deal' excel with newfound swagger without abandoning his jazz roots. It's a compelling pivot into accessible, funky and smart jazz soul.

Review: Jazz legend Max Roach recorded his Moon Faced and Starry Eyed album originally back in 1960. It now gets reissued some 60 years later and remains a jazz classic that for some reason is often rather overlooked. It features Roach alongside his mega-talented group with Ray Bryant, Julian Priester, and Stanley and Tommy Turrentine all playing while Abbey Lincoln is on vocals for two tracks. They are 'Never Leave Me' and a cover of Cole Porter's 'I Concentrate On You' and sit well with other gems like 'Come Rain Or Come Shine' and the standout title cut.
