Review: Isao Suzuki's follow-up to his breakthrough album captures the essence of Japanese jazz in the 1970s, a period where the traditional swing style was redefined with a unique, more restrained approach. This album features exceptional interplay between Suzuki and saxophonist Kazumi Watanabe, with an added depth from pianist Kunihiko Sugano and drummer Tetsujiroh Obara. Notably, bassist Nobuyoshi Ino joins on two tracks, including a stirring rendition of 'Body and Soul', bringing a fuller sound to the ensemble and highlighting Suzuki's innovative use of the cello within the small group context. The music, originally released in 1974, avoids the dated, overly rigid patterns of some American jazz of the time, instead opting for more fluid and expressive forms. Reissued now, this album stands as an essential masterpiece in the Japanese jazz canon, showcasing Suzuki's ability to create timeless, intricate and captivating jazz that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Review: Le Tres Jazz Club revive a 1975 gem with this reissue of Masaru Imada Trio + 2's 'Green Caterpillar', originally released on the revered Japanese jazz label Three Blind Mice. Spearheaded by Fuzati of Klub Des Loosers, the label remains committed to exhuming essential jazz hystereses on vinyl, where 'Green Caterpillar' standing as one of its inaugural releases. Masaru Imada's masterful Rhodes control epitomises the album's sound, recalling the textures of Marc Moulin's Placebo, a key influence of Imada's. 'A Straight Flash' follows in the same spirit, while 'Blue Impulse' and 'Spanish Flower' capture the artist's modal jazz virtues. Heightening the appreciation of Japanese jazz outside its home country, Three Blind Mice have redeployed Green Caterpillar as one of the best wrought records for the achievement of international recognition.

Review: This 1973 jazz funk release shines with Steve Grossman at the helm, surrounded by a stellar lineup that's bound to excite both jazz aficionados and the Rare Groove and DJ communities. The original album, a gem from the iconic TBM (Three Blind Mice) label, has earned its place in jazz history, bridging the gap between traditional jazz and more contemporary sounds. Now, after years of anticipation, this reissue brings the record back to vinyl, expertly remastered by Bernie Grundman. The package includes the original liner notes, offering a richer experience for those revisiting this classic and new listeners alike.

Review: Le Tres Jazz Club presents the long-awaited reissue of Step!, the 1973 Japanese modal jazz masterpiece by Naosuke Myiamoto Sextet. First released on the indomitable Three Blind Mice label, we've an irreversible blend of hard-bop spice and deep modal oils on our plates here. Led by bassist Naosuke Myiamoto, there're star performances by Masayoshi Yoneda on piano, Takashi Goto and Takashi Furuya on saxophone, Kunji Shigi on trumpet, and Shoji Nakayama on drums. Notable for two compositions by the legendary Harold Land, including the lapping, soul-stirring, honorific 'One For Trane', the LP also contains three of Myiamoto's originals, the best of which has to be the celestial 'Where Do They Go'.

Review: Kunihiko Sugano's 1974 album, reissued by the revered TBM label, is a captivating showcase of his pianistic finesse. Known as a "piano magician," Sugano channels Erroll Garner's vibrant touch in compositions that brim with elegance and rhythmic ingenuity. TBM's remastering adds a fresh clarity to Sugano's work, meticulously handled by Bernie Grundman to retain the rich, analogue warmth of the original. This reissue, part of the revered Wa-Jazz series, appeals to both long-time jazz aficionados and newer vinyl enthusiasts, complete with insightful liner notes that connect Sugano's legacy with the label's enduring influence.

Review: Yet another star slice on Japan's genius jazz label Three Blind Mice, who've now reissued it again here, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio's Midnight Sugar, originally released in 1974, remains a landmark in Japanese jazz. Led by pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto - and with Hideto Kanai on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums - this stilly nighttime masterpiece is a true bask in a lamplit witching hour, nailed in the simple contrast of skeletal, swirling drum-brush playing and distant pianissimo. With striking renditions of jazz standards, including 'I'm A Fool To Want You' and 'The Nearness Of You,' where Yamamoto's delicate phrasing shines; the record's appeal rests in the trio's evident chemistry and Yamamoto's expressive yet precise touch.

Sleeve My Love
Review: The first album by saxophone player Takao Uematsu heard him flaunt his diaphragmatic abilities solo after a moment away from his merry band, the George Otsuka Group, which in turn took its name from the drummer whose rhythms you also hear on this record. Drawing clear inspiration from Joe Henderson, Uematsu's playing is marked by a distinctive blend of power, precision, and expressive depth that set him apart in Japan's jazz scene. Here on this curt suite in four movements, we hear insouciant tones meld with latent recuperations of structure, as on the bell-curving emotive peaks of 'TI' and the drum brushing deconstructions of 'Sleeve My Love', with gaping, catch-up rhythms handled masterfully by Otsuka.

Review: Girl Talk completed a celebrated trilogy of albums by Tsuyoshi Yamamoto as it followed on from Midnight Sugar and Misty and solidified his standing as one of Japan's premier jazz pianists. While Yamamoto continued to record and perform with producer Takeshi "Tee" Fujii for over a decade, Girl Talk marked a high point in his career. Together, these three albums set a standard in Japanese jazz and recording quality. Yoshihiko Kannari's engineering at Tokyo's AOI Studios is renowned for its clarity and energy, qualities that earned Girl Talk the prestigious Swing Journal Critic Poll "Jazz Disc" Engineering award in 1976.
