Review: Initially presumed lost in a warehouse fire during relocation in 2015, Suit Yourself Music has unearthed a treasure trove of 150 vintage 45s. After licensing and rebranding, these records are poised to become coveted rarities across diverse music scenes, from mod to dance. Among these finds is this lovely gemia lively, uptempo vocal rendition of Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones' jazz dance classic by acid jazz pioneers, The Night Trains. Featuring the soulful vocals of gospel singer Natalie Maddix, this release was slated for 2015 but lost until now. Secure your copy for guaranteed good times.

Moving In On Somebody's Heart (feat Darrell Smith) (2:52)
I Don't Know Where We Go On From Here (feat Darrell Smith) (3:27)
Review: As heard on the Northern Soul edition of the BBC Proms, this fresh slab of wax hears two slices of brand new soul written specifically for the mighty voice of Darrell Smith. Smith and his house band the Syphons are not only retainers of record label Suit Yourself, but are first and foremost a collective of multi-talents whose chops cannot be reasonably dismissed. Harking a series of 2024 releases from the band, 'Moving In On Somebody's Heart' perfectly captures the group's syncretisms of Northern soul, acid jazz, mod jazz and rhythm n' blues. A convincing throwback to the sensibilities of the 1960s, the A-sider comes replete with vintage production timbres and themes of parting and loss. 'I Don't Know Where To Go From Here', meanwhile, pits a raw and authentic vocal recording against a rejuvenative, romantic follow-up backing, contrasting to the A-side's sense of upheaval.

Sleight Of Hand

Sleight Of Hand (2:58)
Chancer (2:39)
Review: The Syphons are the esteemed house band at Suit Yourself Music and here the unveil their second release featuring the legendary Fay Hallam on Hammond organ. Fresh from supporting Darrell Smith on 'Moving In On Somebody Else's Heart/I Don't Know Where We Go From Here,' The Syphons again get the best from Hallam who showcases her mesmerising organ prowess here. 'Chancer' boasts a big beat reminiscent of 60s spy thrillers, while 'Sleight of Hand' exudes funky vibes and evokes scenes of 70s urban landscapes. Both tracks promise dance floor magic and plenty of good times. Another lovely 7", then.
