Review: In celebration of 50 years in the performing arts, Idris Ackamoor presents Artistic Being for Record Store Day 2025-a powerful blend of jazz, spoken word and activism. Featuring the voices of acclaimed actor Danny Glover and stage legend Rhodessa Jones, this record captures highlights from the Underground Jazz Cabaret, which was performed during Black History Month 2024 at The Lab in San Francisco. Co-produced by Ackamoor's Cultural Odyssey, the release fuses poetic storytelling with evocative musical textures while reflecting on social justice, identity and resilience. Artistic Being is a profound statement from a visionary artist.

Review: There have been plenty of retrospectives on the absolutely essential work of Sun Ra and his Arkestra over the years, but trust Strut to go that bit deeper when they elected to focus on the Sun God himself. As the extensive title suggests, this collection places the focus on proceedings in the hands of Marshall Allen, the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current band leader. The results mean In The Orbit Of Ra feels a whole lot more personal and indepth, with over 25 years worth of Sun Ra-lead music documented. It's all been fully remastered from the original tapes and is pretty much the most conclusive introduction to the work of this pioneer one could hope for. In addition to the 13 track double vinyl set, this release also includes the double CD edition which includes a further 7 Ra gems!

Review: Arthur Russell's legacy has remained strong long after his untimely death in 1992, most notably in recent times with the highly respected music critic Tim Lawrence unveiling his must read biography last year; this follows a documentary Wild Combination and a collection of cover versions released by Electric Minds. It is perhaps this latest musical project presented by the good people at Strut Records that will be of most interest to fans of Russell's work. Arthur's Landing is a collective of musicians who worked with the producer and cellist throughout his varied musical career. Led by guitarist Steve Hall, the ever morphing group of musicians have made a commitment to sustaining Russell's musical legacy and have spent the last few years touring and performing new arrangements of tracks from the Russell canon and they present twelve of them here on this enlightening album which has been produced by contemporary NYC icon Brennan Green. As well as presenting unique takes on both well known and unheard Russell tracks - witness the shimmering beauty of their take on "Is It All Over My Face" for instance - the album sleeve notes have detailed memoirs from the members of Arthur's Landing discussing each track, making this a truly special album. Strut surround themselves with so many great music projects you'd have to wonder what a gaping hole would be left if they weren't around.

Mulatu's Mood

Review: Generally accepted as the father of Ethio jazz, Mulatu Astatke releases his first studio album in over twenty years through Strut. Mulatu Steps Ahead signals somewhat of a new approach for the veteran who also engages with western jazz in favour of his more familiar, native style that has made him such a pioneering artist during the 60s and 70s. Having been making jazz music for the last 50 years, Mulatu Astatke has worked with some of the greats of the jazz world. On this album, he recorded with members of the Either/Orchestra in Boston, with members of The Heliocentrics and some of the UK's leading jazz and African players whilst also adding contributions by traditional Ethiopian musicians in Addis. The album follows on from the success of both the acclaimed Inspiration Information collaboration and recent Strut compilation, New York "Addis " London.
Mulatu Steps does not focus on his past roots however, indeed much of it was recorded in the States. The result is a more traditional sounding jazz record than we are used to from him. But that is not to say there is less intrigue and personality woven into it though. In fact, each track on the album tells its very own story. Opener "Radcliffe" reflects on his time as a lecturer at Harvard University.
"Assosa" adapts traditional music from the Assosa tribes of North-Western Ethiopia, "Mulatu's Mood" re-works a Mulatu jazz fusion composition from the early 1990s into a new swinging Afro high life arrangement and "Derashe" deals with the traditional diminishing scales of the Derashe people of Southern Ethiopia. Although different from his previous work, Mulatu Astatke continues to keep jazz fresh, contemporary and up to date whether it’s African or American. Let’s just hope it’s not another twenty years until his next studio album.

Review: Strut has the honour of delivering the first ever compilation of Balka Sound's iconic 1980s recordings, many of which have gone on to inform and influence a multitude of artists from across the globe. Hailing from Congo-Brazzaville, and led by celebrated vocalist and ngonfi player, Nkibi Lusialala Albert, the outfit's deft ability to capture the spirit of traditional Balka music from their homeland and make it completely fresh, and their own, is showcased in full across this 15-track outing.

Quite unlike anything you've probably heard before, it's hard not to feel completely intoxicated and transported by the lush, deep sounds, but the back story is equally captivating. Forming in 1972, Balka Sound rose through the live ranks before finally getting a deal to put out an album at the end of the decade. Studio output blossomed in the 1980s, but as that era cascaded into the 90s civil tensions, then outright civil war cast things, including the players, to the wind. Regrouping for a year in 1996, more fighting - during which their studio was looted and trashed - finally forced them to call time within 12 months of reuniting.

This was one of NYC's most influential spots during the city's thriving art scene of the mid 70s and 80s. All Your Goodies Are Gone (feat Mayer Hawthorne)
Miss Millie (feat Kings Go Forth)
Review: Two tracks taken from the new self titled album on Strut from guitar legend Dennis Coffey, the man responsible for the B-Boy classic and million-copy selling ''Scorpio''. Dennis was also a member of the Motown Funk Brothers backing band and was key to bringing heavy wah wah guitar to soul and R&B during the late 60s. Stones Throw artist Mayer Hawthorne assists on the A Side, covering a George Clinton penned track with Mayer's vocals sounding soulfully sweet. On the flip Milwaukee outfit Kings Go Forth get to grips with a new composition, a fantastic dancefloor shaker with funk rock overtones and heavy on the Hammond organ. Tough stuff all round - Dennis Coffey is back!

Review: Strut continues their work from the archives of Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids with a first ever vinyl release of Ackamoor's debut avant-garde / Afro-jazz recordings from 1971 with The Collective, based out of Yellow Springs, Ohio. If avant-garde is just vanguardism, then it almost certainly follows that The Collective were at the vanguard of 1970s chromaticism and spiritual jazz. 'Idrissa's Dream' is a beautiful and natural slice of free jazz, incorporating Afrofuturist tropes.

Review: Thanks to an upsurge in interest in zouk, the synthesizer-heavy tropical style that emerged from the French Antilles in the early 1980s, reissues of superb but hard to find gems from the style's original heyday are becoming increasingly popular. This one from Strut Records is a peach. Originally released in 1988, "Las Pale" is the sole album from Feeling Kreyol, a female trio from Guadeloupe assembled and produced by local studio buffs Darius Denon and Frankie Brumier. It remains a brilliantly effervescent and colourful set, with the trio adding strong and attractive to distinctively tropical drum machine rhythms, shimmering synths, kaleidoscopic melodies and jangling guitars. In other words, it's a giddy blast of electronic tropical brilliance. Don't sleep.

Review: Jazz has always been as much about great collaborations as anything else and that is very much the case with the modern scene. Proving that is Flock, a new coming together of five talented musicians Bex Burch from Vula Viel, Maisha's Al MacSween, Sarathy Korwar, Dan "Danalogue" Leavers and Collocutor's Tamar Osborn. They got together for the first time in March 2020 for a Boiler Room show and some memorable streams during lockdown. Strut Records were listening in and managed to get them in the studio together to try something fresh. The resulting improvised sounds focus on "breathing and listening to each other", explains Bex Burch. It makes for a wild, innovative ride.

Review: UK supergroup Flock returns with their highly anticipated second album, Flock II. Featuring Bex Burch, Sarathy Korwar, Tamar Osborn, Danalogue and Al MacSween, this new record pushes creative boundaries with fresh tracks born from their magnificent collective spirit. Unlike their debut, Flock II was recorded over a week in 2022 in the serene Welsh countryside using inventive "jump-off" devices like shape-based diagrams and strobe effects to inspire each composition. Set in a converted country church, the resulting soundscapes are both intense and hypnotic as they weave together a personal journey through their most atmospheric sounds.

Review: With the capabilities of modern discology allowing for the current deluge of disco 'edits', most of which do little beyond extending an intro for ease of mixing, it would have been an intriguing prospect to see what disco edit progenitor Walter Gibbons thought. Sadly we'll never find out, but current edit profiteers could do worse than check out this retrospective of Walter Gibbons remixes compiled by Strut. Nominally split between the 70s and 80s, the first section documents the imaginative reworks of the Salsoul catalogue that helped cement Gibbon's reputation whilst the second focuses on the mid eighties period where he worked closely with Arthur Russell. It was a chance encounter at the Salsoul office which afforded the then 22-year-old Gibbons an opportunity to remix Double Exposure's "Ten Percent", which became the first commercially successful 12inch release. That mix is one of seven tracks which aptly demonstrate the percussion heavy style Gibbon's branded Jungle Music, with the closing 11 minute mix of Betty LaVette perhaps the most impressive example. The second section provides more sonic intrigue, starting off with a previously unreleased remix of Arthur Russell's "See Through", which is followed by Gibbons seminal take on Dinosaur L's "Go Bang" and perhaps the masterpiece of his career - a nine minute remix of Strafe's "Set It Off". Strut have delivered yet another superlative retrospective here. Released on a double LP with a limited bonus mix CD, this is not to be missed!

Good news - it's just as good, as Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids return to form with a first new album in three years. This one is as epic they come, exploring all manner of jazz and Afro-future sounds with core Pyramids members Ackamoor on sax, keytar and organ joined by flutist Margaux Simmons, Sandra Poindexter on violin and Bobby Cobb on guitar. Tracks take in hard-hitting socio-political commentaries and laments for lost loved ones as well as some nice and hazy cosmic trips.

Review: When it comes to compilation making there's probably no two safer names in the art than Strut Records and Optimo's JD Twitch (and maybe the one Trevor Jackson too). This time around though, surprise surprise, Twitch collides a choice selection of oddball rarities and mythical classics from Germany's original post-punk and DIY scene, and in the process gives the behemoth Vinyl-on-demand label a dashing run for its money. There's a staggering amount of music to be discovered here that will send your mind running down one of Berlin's dank strasses or a Dresden ditch, but after hearing tracks like "Your Turn To Run" by Malaria! or Twitch's own edit of Christiane F "Wunderbar" you may be left wondering why you've been listening to Talking Heads and "Eisbear" this whole time.

Review: There's a beautiful story behind this project... US artist Chief Boima found videos of blind Sierra Leon musician Sorie on YouTube. A successful remix and an even more fortuitous Kickstarter campaign later and Sorie finds himself on a US tour and in the studio making a body of work with Boima that Strut are about to release. It starts right here with the low end pulsations and trembling marimba and heartfelt vocals of "Belle Wahallah" and the softer, slower, steadier early morning cries of "Yeanoh". Complete with remixes from Boddhi Satva and Hagan, this is a stunning package.

Philadelphia International All-Stars - "Lets Clean Up The Ghetto" (re-mastered Stereo extended version)
Review: Legendary New York DJ Danny Krivit follows up his recent Edits By Mr. K release on Strut with a third 12" plucked from the album featuring fat 'n' loud pressings of two of the exclusive edits featured on the Music Of The Earth LP. Milton Hamilton's "We Have All The Time" (from the Disco Madness album from '76 )is flipped with a new stereo, full length edit of Philadelphia International All-Stars' social commentary classic, "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto" from 1977. Danny's edit removes some of the vocal parts and beefs up the instrumentals. Limited to 1,000 copies worldwide.

Review:
Strut re-kindle their involvement with one New York's most revered DJs and re-edit pioneers, Danny Krivit, with a fresh album of essential new, rare and classic re-works, past and resent.

As a producer, Krivit is the acknowledged "King Of The Edit" and has been a major influence on today's re-edit culture. From early classics like the 'Feelin' James' and 'Rock The House' JB cut-ups during the mid-'80s, he has released over 300 unique versions, often under the mysterious 'Mr. K' moniker. After releasing a batch of his finest edits on the 'Edits By Mr. K' compilation in 2003, Strut now delve back into the tape cupboard for an all-new edition, bringing together some of Krivit's secret weapons in a wide-ranging selection covering soulful disco, funk and jazz.

Review: Late Philadelphia reedman Byard Lancaster's lesser known classic 'My Pure Joy' was recorded for the Black Fire label in 1992. Backed by a band made up of fellow Philly musicians such as percussionist Keno Speller and Baba Robert Crowder, other influential figures like Tunde Kuboye also featured and help to lend it its richly musical, afro drenched sound. Full grooves, trademark flutes and plenty of spiritual, positive vibes abound throughout the tracks which surfaced as one of the label's final CD releases in 1995 and has never before appeared on vinyl.

Review: This is a special sampler 12" taken from the Various Artists compilation Defend Your Planet that Avoidant Records put out. It features a heavyweight crew of electro mainstays, first of which are The Advent & Zein Ferreira. Their 'Defend Your Plane' is a turbo powered cosmic assault with skewed synths and high speed drums. Assembler Code's 'Line Of Sight' doesn't let up, powering on through sheet metal snares and juddering drum programming and then man like Carl Finlow layers in prickly melodies, dark sci-fi energy and booming bass. Analogue master Versalife shits things down with the shadowy 'SH09.'

Review: The back catalogue of Jimmy Gray's Black Fire record label is full of jazz gems, though few are more sought after than the sole album from spiritual jazz ensemble Lon Moshe & Southern Freedom Arkestra, Love Is Where The Spirit Lies. Recorded over an 18-month period, the set was initially released on vinyl - in small numbers - in 1977 and briefly returned to stores on CD in 1993. This is the first vinyl edition since, with the tracks now stretched over two slabs of wax to ensure a louder cut. Musically, much of what's on offer is sublime, with Moshe and his talented collaborators delivering spiritual jazz cuts that variously draw influence from soul-jazz, jazz-funk, free-jazz, modal and heavy Latin jazz.

It was thought to be a lost recording until it recently showed up and now gets fully revived by Strut. There are strong political links between these countries which no doubt adds weight to this musical link up. It is a great exchange of cultures from parables to laments on child abuse to tunes that fuse reggae, jazz and post-punk with township styles.

Review: Recorded in New York in 1966, Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata" - her first for the legendary Reprise Records imprint - has long been considered one of the most important and influential South African albums of all time. Strut certainly thinks so and has offered up a "definitive version" that contains both mono and stereo mixes of the album, alongside new sleeve notes that tell the singer's remarkable story in vivid detail. Musically the set is rooted in jazz, but also incorporates sounds, rhythms and instrumentation not only reflective of Makeba's home country, but also nods to American soul, Latin rhythms and calypso (the latter showcasing the influence of her mentor, Harry Belafonte).

Review: This is the cult classic and historically important debut album from Malombo Jazz Makers, a group that was formed in Mamelodi township near Pretoria. It came in 1966 after they had become a well known and loved band who toured across Africa with the second iteration of their line up. It featured Mamelodi-based guitarist Lucas "Lucky" Ranku who was brought in to replace the troubled and erratic genius that was Philip Tabane who had become chaotic on tour. With that lineup change came a change of name from their first years as Malombo Jazz Men. The album fused South African tradition with new jazz thinking and for that reason remains classic.

This long yet impressive album weaves across a sonic landscape in five movements, blending electronics, sax and voice and binding them all together via the deft use of intervals and improv. A strong and moving debut from the clear clarinetist and the percussive polymath.

Review: Strut take the initiative from last year's critically lauded Inspiration Information collaboration between Mulatu Astatke and the Heliocentrics by pairing the latter up with another engrossing figure in Lloyd Miller. Born into the pulsing environment of 1938 New Orleans and raised on a diet of jambalaya and jazz, a move to Iran in the late 50s sparked what has become a lifelong obsession with the music of Persia and Eastern Asia. Miller has previously collaborated with drummer Catto and bass player Ferguson from the Heliocentrics on the Jazzman released Lloyd Miller Trio EP and this album marks the onset of a blossoming musical relationship between all. It is "Electricone" which previously featured on that EP that opens OST in such mesmerising form with the strains of wood wind and taut percussion preparing your ears for a hypnotic journey through subtle eastern jazz arrangements tinged with a soft edge of psychedelia. Miller's appearance behind the microphone on "Lloyd's Diatribe" dukes it out with the pensive guitar flavour of album closer "Sunda Sunset" for the highlight of an all round impressive listen.

Review: Second time around for Joey Negro and Sean P's peerless collection of post-punk era New York club cuts, a compilation that proved hugely influential when it was first released way back in 2000. The track listing strangely omits one track present on the original release (the full 16-minute version of Steve Miller Band's "Macho City"), but otherwise it's a faithful reproduction. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the eccentric electrofunk of Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice" and P-funk influenced strut of Material's "Over And Over", to the skittish jazz-goes-dub disco bustle of Don Cherry's "I Walk" and the low-slung percussive voodoo of Nicky Siano's "Move". The undisputed master of NYC leftfield disco, Arthur Russell, is represented via cuts from Loose Joints, Dinosaur and Indian Ocean.

Review: Leeds and London-based fusionists Nubiyan Twist has a great track record, but even by their dizzyingly high standards, Freedom Fables is extra-special. Akin to a soul-fired smorgasbord of intertwining influences and inspirations, it sees the 12-piece ensemble joined by a string of headline-grabbing guest vocalists and musicians (think Ria Moran, Pat Thomas, Cherise and K.O.G) to effortlessly join the dots between soul, Afrobeat, Highlife, jazz-funk, dancefloor jazz, hip-hop soul and much more besides. The results are uniformly outstanding, with our picks including raucous Afrobeat-meets-jazz workout 'If I Know', the dreamy hip-hop-soul of 'Buckle Up', and the slick, high octane jazz-soul fusion of 'Wipe Away Tears'. Undoubtedly one of the most entertaining albums we've heard so far this year.

They effortlessly fuse all those standards together here on a record that is global yet local, worldly yet personal, with cues from highlife, Latin and hip hop also colouring the expressive and lively grooves. Fine musicianship as ever defines each tune, as does great vocal and lyric work from each and every one of the many guests. The lurching beats and conversational sax of '24-7' feat Ego Ella May and heart warming soul of 'Wipe Away Tears' (feat Nick Richards) are personal favs here at Juno HQ.

Review: J. Plunky Branch and his band, the Oneness Of Juju, are absolute units of the US funk scene. Active on the circuit for 30 years, their style blends a peaceful mix of African jazz, funk and blues, and has seen them go as strong as they were upon their initial formation in San Francisco. Now, though, they throw a curveball: focusing more on the instrumental side of things, the new album 'Bush Brothers And Space Rangers' lays down a slew of tunes that were specially recorded without the use of a single guitar, which helped spur on this album's more soulful direction.

Review: Some fantastic 1970s recordings of The Pyramids get drawn together for the first time here on this collection from Strut. Masterful saxophonist Idris Ackamoor leads this group of students from Antioch College in Ohio. They were absolute pioneers in the afrofuturism world and made a trio of albums produced without any label backing or distribution between 1972 and 1976. These are intense sounds with famously African-styled percussion. Up top are the vocals which take the form of songs and chants, with added power from the horns, African instruments and some smart arrangements that are flowing, long, and hypnotic.

At the truly spiritual end of the soul jazz spectrum, the concise catalogue of The Pyramids spans a short space of time but reaches far and wide. Now Strut have gathered together those early iconic works and remastered the three original LPs Lalibela, King of Kings and Birth / Speed / Merging, presenting them in a box set alongside an additional first-pressing of their live session for KQED TV in 1975. Packaged with a 12-page booklet featuring extended interviews with the group and a wealth of unseen photos, this is the perfect document of a groundbreaking force in spiritual jazz.

The definitive Egyptian jazz album blends the best of Black American jazz with plenty of rich Islamic traditions and Egyptian folklore and now gets reissued by Sturt across a glorious double gatefold with an insert. These storytelling tracks range fo flute laced percussive numbers that are loose, happy and airy such as on the excellent 'Mervat' to more swinging, jazz lounge groovers like 'Black Butterfly.' There is real cinematic drama in 'Upper Egypt The King's Valley' as well as plenty of other highlights on this essential jazz album.

Review: 1973's Egypt Strut, a rare album from jazz bandleader Salah Ragab and his Cairo Jazz Band (a collective of musicians who were then serving with him in the Egyptian army), has long been considered one of global jazz's "crown jewels" - an inspired, hard-to-find set that offers arguably the greatest fusion of Afro-American jazz, Arabian music and Sun Ra style spirituality ever committed to wax. This CD reissue has been marketed as the "definitive" version of the set. It expands on the original recording by adding eight previously unreleased recordings from the sessions that led to the album, as well as liner notes that tell the whole remarkable story of Egypt Strut's concept and creation.

Review: Those who dig disco reggae - and specifically sun splashed, dub-wise covers of disco classics - should already be aware of the brilliant Risco Connection, a late-'70s outfit from Toronto helmed by former Studio One drummer Joe Isaacs. Original copies of the band's various singles and EPs have long been very tricky to find, so this first 'official' retrospective is more than welcome. It not only showcases the full-length vocal versions of the band's key singles - including killer covers of McFadden & Whitehead's 'Ain't No Stppping Us Now', Diana Ross's 'It's My House' and Inner Life's 'I'm Caught Up' - but also a swathe of alternative 'version' mixes, dubs and lesser-known original compositions. It's brilliant, beguiling and joyously life-affirming.

Review: Risco Connection were the perfect reggae-disco crossover act, founded by Studio 1 sticksman Joe Isaacs after he moved to Canada in the late 60s. Searching for a sweet spot between the plush orchestration of disco and the upbeat shuffle of rocksteady, he embarked on a series of covers with a strong cast behind him, taking on the likes of Chic's 'Good Times', 'It's My House' and a version of 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now' which became a staple at David Mancuso's mythical Loft parties. This collection gathers together all the singles - vocals, dubs and all - and comes packaged with an interview with Isaacs and liner notes, restored and remastered and sounding better than ever.

Review: Ah Strut, the label that's happy to dig that bit deeper off the beaten path comes up trumps once again with The Lost Tapes, a retrospective of obscure Romanian band Rodion G.A. Fronted by the half-Hungarian, half-Romanian Rodion Ladislau Rosca, Rodion G.A. recorded from 1978 to 1984 during a time of significant political repression in Romania, when artistic censorship led to a polished music scene that was marginalised to a network of festivals and small gigs in the restaurants and clubs of seaside towns. Rosca's music stood apart from the prevailing rock heavy sounds of late 60s Romania, embracing primitive electronic equipment that included an East German Vermona drum machine and Casio VL tone alongside effects pedals which were multi-tracked using multiple Tesla tape machines. This collection digs through the mass of private recordings Rosca made, and provides some thrilling insight into a dense world of raw electronics.

Review: More RSD 2014 gear incoming! This year was a real deluge but the surprises never seem to be over given the arrival of one of the most obscure records we know. Strut completists will know all about Rodion GA from that excellent retrospective of the'80s era Romanian experimental outfit, but Delta Space Mission is near impossible to find in its original pressing. Thankfully, we can always count on Strut to release something totally bonkers and sought-after! This record is basically a dream for anyone whose into synths and anything space-age-related, with tracks such as "Bau-Bau" and "Planeta Misterioasa" really sounding like something out of a far, unknown and unexplored corner of the universe. "Study/Signal/Longing For Home" is another sublime slice of extraterrestrial funk, where odd bleeps and computer-game melodies collide for a battle to the death. Terrific.

Review: By the time Patrice Rushen released Straight From The Heart in 1982, she was undoubtedly at the top of her game. The set remains one of the finest albums of the post-disco/boogie era, offering an enticing mix of genuine club classics (see 'Forget Me Nots', which was later heavily sampled by Will Smith on 'Men in Black', 'Number One', 'Breakout' and 'I'm Tired of Being Alone') and overlooked slow hams ('Where There Is Love', 'If Only' and the seductive 'Remind Me'). This expanded, double vinyl edition of the album is probably the definitive version, featuring as it does extended 12" versions of the set's most revered moments, not to mention a louder, more DJ-friendly cut.
