Obsession EP
Cat: PHONICA 015. Rel: 21 May 15

Deep House
Obession (5:49)
Show Interest (5:08)
Eye Contact (6:03)
Rise Fall Run (7:09)
Review: Our pals over at Phonica Records have always moved with the times and their label is a prime example of how up-to-date they are with the underground dance scene. The imprint's fifteenth outing comes in the form of a 12" EP by Art Crime, a Russian artist who previously appeared on Willie Burnett's WT Records as well as providing the artwork for his recent Black Deer outing on Rush Hour's No 'Label'. "Obsession" itself is a pumping house number with a noticeable disco shade, "Show Interest" is more cavernous and on the techno side of things, while "Eye Contact" is moodier in character, and "Rise Fall Run" goes for a lo-fi approach in true outsider style. Brilliant house tunes.

House Organ For The Lonely (8:33)
Fumana Prophecy (6:49)
Rhythm Paint (5:55)
Review: Following his adventures with Effraiim Kent earlier this year, Sweden's Alex Berg makes his debut on Phonica with a triplet of slinky, pared-back minimal tech work-outs. Each track representing a different side of palette 'House Organ For The Lonely' eases us in softly with Innervisions style pads and a molten, ever-evolving bass bedrock. 'Fumana Prophecy' takes us much deeper down Berg's rabbit hole where the bassline stays fluid but the pads are replaced by more rhythmic elements and low end shades. For the full Berg blow-out flip for the trippy, sexy harmonic affair 'Rhythm Paint'. Think 'Erotic Discourse' but more mangled and off-beat to suit these strange, unnerving times.

L'Avventura EP

Deep House
L'Avventura (dub) (7:02)
L'Avventura (main) (7:36)
Nokturn (6:14)
HG (6:56)
Review: Since making his debut on Rhythm Section International in 2016, Polish producer Earth Trax has proved to be one of the major players in the revivalist dream house movement. He's at it again here, delivering another swathe of tactile, ear-pleasing and mood-enhancing cuts. "L'Aventura" is available in two tasty variations, both of which are underpinned by snappy drum hits and thickset synth bass. The "Main" mix makes great use of fluttering synthesizer flute lines and cascading pianos, while the "Dub" is a little more stripped back and percussive despite the presence of plenty of humid synth sounds. Elsewhere, "Nokturn" is a masterful exercise in eyes-closed sunrise nostalgia, while closer "HG" massages your ears with all the sensuality of a forgotten Morenas production.

Truth (main street mix) (5:45)
Truth (Back Alley mix) (6:17)
Old Way, New Way (7:05)
And Then (6:17)
Review: Long-time collaborators Earth Trax & Newborn Jr collide once again for another London/Polish lesson in house music rudiments. Bumping with a classic 1990 feel but 2019 muscle, "Truth" hits home in two different ways; the big room hooky crossover vibe (Main Street remix) and a deeper, acid-tinged introspective twist (Back Alley mix). Flip for two more blasts of foundation magic; "Old Way, New Way" hits with classic synth-pipes and Mr Fingers dreaminess while "And Then" closes the show with a wry Balearic head nod. Turns out you can handle the "Truth".

Forgot Who I Was (7:42)
Remembering (5:48)
Review: After his recent releases on X-Kalay and Craigie Knowes, Melbourne's Escape Artist returns to Phonica where he has previously released his well-received Energy Breakthrough EP. Once again here he shows his love of serving up euphoric and energetic cuts with the A-side, 'Forgot Who I Was,' building great intensity with delicate melodies and a shifting bassline. The B-side, 'Remembering', offers a contrasting yet complementary vibe that keeps on with the previous track's two-step rhythm while evolving into a more uplifting direction with ambient techno elements and acidic breaks. It's potent stuff.

FindAWay2Day (6:44)
Something Inside Of Me (3:55)
Down All Day (5:18)
Daywun (4:19)
Review: Eli Escobar's previous release was a dusty, digital-only mixtape full of J Dilla-inspired hip-hop head-nodders, so it's nice to see him return to the dancefloor via what we think is his strongest EP of club cuts since his time releasing on Classic Music. 'FindAWay2Day' is sunny and life-affirming, with the NYC producer adding smile-inducing chords, loved-up pads, sampled vocal snippets, disco guitar licks and eyes-closed sax sounds to a solid foundation of shuffling house drums and boogie bass. 'Something Inside of Me is a tech-tinged chunk of hazy late-night deep house hypnotism, while 'Down All Day' is a rushing, ultra-bright chunk of piano-house retro-futurism and 'Daywun' is a contemporary deep house take on hip-house. Luscious stuff all told.

Too Hot To Sleep (4:34)
Troubled Mind (7:21)
Black Acid (5:08)
Work & TV (5:47)
Review: Frankfurt legend Roman Flugel continues on his decades long winning streak, this time appearing outside of his usual base of hometown heroes Robert Johnson the in house label of Phonica Records with the Black Acid EP. There's a tougher side to Flugel that we haven't heard in a while on opening track "Too Hot To Sleep", a bleeping and cyclical techno tool that's not quite as aggressive as his Acid Jesus or Alter Ego material, but equally impressive. It's more the Flugel we know on "Troubled Mind: this deep and atmospheric slow burner merges the organic and synthetic superbly, where soothing bell tones merge with dusty electronics. On the flip, we have the sublime "Work & TV" hypnotizing you into submission on this minimal composition full of whirling melodies and stripped drums awash in deep trails of reverb.

Gene On Earth - "Club Jacket" (5:34)
Huerta - "Hit The Bit" (6:48)
Subb-an & Luther Vine - "Sunday Roll Through" (7:02)
Keisuke - "Ride It Out" (6:44)
Review: It's 20 years up for London's Phonica Records, a fine place to go for a dig but also a rather good label for those who like fresh electronic sounds. They are marking the occasion with a series of samplers of what they do and this is the seance in the series. It's a global affair with artists from all over contributing, starting with man of the moment Gene on Earth and his chord-laced house bopper 'Club Jacket.' Huerta then comes through with 'Hit The Bit' which is an amped-up tech house party starter and Subb-an & Luther Vine combine for the deep and slinky sounds of 'Sunday Roll Through.' Keisuke ends things with the funky loops of 'Ride It Out.'

Easy Tiger (7:21)
RIP Ralph (5:21)
One For The Club (7:56)
Snake In The Grass (8:26)
Review: Cardiff's Harrison BDP has become increasingly prolific of late. Over the last 12 months he's released no less than six EPs for the likes of Berg Audio, Shall Not Fade, Lost Palms and Standalone Records. Easy Tiger, his second missive of 2021, sees him return to Phonica Records after an absence of three years. What's on offer is deep house with a twist. Take opener 'Easy Tiger', for example: while it boasts some resplendent Korg M1 organ sounds and warming pads, the beats that sit beneath boast the chunky swing of turn of the millennium UK garage. This hybrid style is explored further on the two-step-goes-breaks-via-deep house flex of 'RIP Ralph' and the wilder 'Snake in the Grass', while 'One For The Club' sounds like early '90s progressive house with a darkroom twist.

Review: Following his Fade Back From Reality EP on Shall Not Fade sister label Lost Palms a few months ago, Cardiff's Harrison BDP is back with another killer - this time on London's Phonica. Uplifting 'power' house vibes abound on the explosive "Life Unlimited", while the dubby and hypnotic cyclicality of "Fish In The Tank" perfectly nails that sound of tech-house that we're particularly fond of at present. Find a real special treat on the flip in the form of "It's All Good" - a soulful and funky breakbeat driven number perfect for any set.

Joakim - "EAHR"
Panoram - "Alpha Marmara"
Psychemagik - "Triumph Of The Gods"
The Draughtsman - "Fade To Green"
Review: As the famed London establishment toasts ten years in the game, the first vinyl sampler from their chunky two disc compilation is out, featuring four choice cuts for those who want the tunes on wax. First up Joakim is in a particularly soaring mood with "EHAR", all analogue tweakery and cyclical rhythms with a distinctly optimistic feel. Meanwhile Panoram is laying down a more jammed-out, jazzy flavour of downtempo on "Alpha Mamara", which Psychemagik follows on from with the sumptuous disco strings and Schifrin funk of "Triumph of The Gods". The Draughtsman meanwhile gets into a much more mechanical frame of mind with the last track, falling into a broken beat and letting rich harmonies slowly form from hushed tones, exercising great patience and subtlety in the process.

Medlar & Red Rack'em - "Morning Light"
Moire - "Solar Signs"
STL - "Freaky Fingers"
Review: The vinyl pressings of the expansive two-disc compilation for Phonica continue with this diverse selection from an impressive cast. Sheffield hero Lo Shea is in a mischievous mood with the skipping beat and gruesome bass of "Home", while Medlar and Red Rack'em join forces for the chunky dub house of "Morning Light". Moire has a more techno-inclined approach on "Solar Signs" that features plenty of hopeful synths and an audacious breakdown, and then STL brings the leftfield goodies with the characteristically edgy throwdown "Freaky Fingers" choc full of rasping drums and carnival whistles.

Gigha
Review: Phonica's in-house label heads north of the border once more to secure some more superb electronic music from the Lord Of The Isles. Though nominally falling under the deep house banner, there's always a lot more detail and intrigue in a production from Lord Of The Isles and that is certainly the case with both "Greane" and "Gigha". Both tracks are the Lord in long form mode with 10 minute A Side "Greane" wedged between the dancefloor and a more melancholic place. Live kicks certainly give the track some driving energy but the wonderfully pitch bent synths and bass pulses add a degree of sonic personality (and introspection) that sets the Lord apart from your contemporary deep house chancer. "Gigha" is slightly shorter but captivates from the off thanks to some apparently synthetic string flourishes which eventually give way to a throbbing rhythm that just builds and builds.

Lost Empire
Review: Since surfacing with prime fromage-free edit material for Cole Medina's American Standard label, Scottish producer Lord Of The Isles has graduated to fully fledged original productions with some great releases on quality imprints like Cocktail D'Amour, Ene and the lesser spotted Unthank label. A freshly announced debut on Shevchenko adds to his growing cache, as does Year Of The City, this excellent four track induction on the newly relaunched Phonica label. A hallmark of any release from Lord Of The Isles is a nice balance of styles and this 12" is no different. The title track sets the tone, as the producer invites us on a journey into the dark heavily arpeggiated future, one driven by some brilliantly loose rhythms. Following this, "FS01" eschews the need for drums, instead implementing all manner of atmospheric drama via some brilliant synth play, while "Forkx" is a full on Motor City Soul epic. "Lost Empire" is an ambient outro whose brief duration has you begging for more.

Low Tension (2014 remastered original) (4:45)
Low Tension (FOOG remix) (8:37)
Low Tension (Utopian mix) (6:37)
Review: Utopia Records is a new joint venture from Alex Bradley, celebrated digger and formerly involved in the seductive London event series Love Fever, and Soho establishment Vinyl Factory. The inaugural release from the label may well be of archival nature, but Utopia promises to wider in remit moving forward with "official re-releases and remastering of obscurities to contemporary and cutting edge club and home listening music" laid out in the sales notes. As opening salvos go, things look very promising indeed with a trip into the early '90s deep house Japanese scene in the company of production masters Manabu Nagayama and Soichi Terada. "Low Tension" originates from a very pricey split release on BPM from 1991, and comes backed with remixes from Yukihiro Fukutomi's Foog project and Bradley himself as Utopian.

Moonwalker
Review: In line with the ever present allure of coldwave synths and soundtrack sensibilities in house music, Phonica serve up this colourful trio of jams from emergent Michigan producer North Lake. Following on from appearances on Sweatshop and Resista, here Isaac Delongchamp gets to further demonstrate his gift for warm synths and intricate melodies over the simplest of grooves. "Marlborol Noir" is all fuzzy basslines haunting leads, while "Suomi Kutsusu" is of a much sunnier disposition with its open-topped chords and nagging open hats. "Moonwalker" veers towards electro territory with its illustrious arpeggios and uptempo strut rounding off a rich and varied EP of up-to-the-minute synth house.

Review: Nuage has taken an unusual shift towards broader horizons, after making his initial name in drum n' bass. 'Pink Television' is definitely an EP that shows off this change in direction; they are meticulous exercises in ambient techno, house and breaks, humanized to Nuagey nuance. 'Don't Forgive Me' is the highlight: filtered out soul vocals and monotone FMs provice a Bicep-like sense of urgency, before flourishing arps build to faux-elysia that never quite peak.

Review: London's vital Phonica is a store and record shop of great repute amongst underground music fans. It is now a mighty fine 20 years young and to mark the occasion has put together a series of fine samplers that explore the sort of varied and vital sounds it deals in. This first one kicks off with the evergreen Nya and bouncy piano house bumper 'Broken Needs'. Ninos Indigo's 'Luna' then gets a nice future-facing electro rework from Shanti Celeste that gets you on your toes and Dam Swindle then bring some loopy and feel-good house vibes to 'Allright (Just A Tribute)', a real nod to Chez Damier's early sound. System Olympia's 'A Mezzanotte" is twinkling nu-disco with Italo arps to get lost in.

Review: London's Phonica Records is celebrating being 20 years strong, not only a shop but also a label that serves as a breeding ground for all manner of new musical talents. What better way to mark the commencement of its third decade, then, than with some new music? 20 Years Of Phonica: Sampler 3 pulls together artists from the electronic vanguard, starting with Paramida & E-Talking's 'Read My Lips' which is an acid-laced 90s techno revival. Dauwd's 'Slam' is stripped back and pulses with acid and Daniel Avery's 'Bell' is languid, melodic and gorgeously serene techno. Willow's 'Willbush' is a skeletal minimal rhythm with some nice wobbly bass weight.

One Night Stand (Slow Drumapella mix) (5:33)
Review: Miguel Barros aka Spanish pop-house hero Pional is up next on Phonica, doing what he does best on the XME EP. It could quite possibly be his most interesting EP yet. This follows up some terrific releases by him recently on Permanent Vacation, Hivern Discs and Counter Records. Glittering FM tones outline a deep and emotive groove on "XME" while the Quiet Ceremony mix up next ventures down deeper and more hypnotic territory. On the flip, the Madrid native delivers an eerie minimal techno composition on "One Night Stand" with its sparse and introverted groove giving the emotive vocals an added sense of isolation. The Slow Drumapella mix isn't as morose - by contrast, it injects a nice sense of bounce and groove into it.

Review: Phonica make a welcome return to the releasing fray with this illustrious set of tracks from Slow Life regular S Moreira and his hitherto unknown cohort Xinner. It's a dense and immersive techno experience that draws upon the comforting melodic lilt of the early 90s while giving everything a potent modern sheen. "Communication Breakdown" has plenty of dub techno running through its veins, albeit with a generous sprinkling of space dust, while "Through The Rings Of Saturn" drops the dub and opts for the interstellar kind of synth play that made The Martian so fun to listen to. "Orbiting Around" meanwhile takes a diversion into Mo Wax flavoured broken beat, and then Moreira delivers a standalone "Spacedub" of "Communication Breakdown" that revels in its displacement.

Review: James Priestley and Giles Smith are stalwarts of the London scene (and the duo behind the legendary Secretsundaze parties) and make a rare release outside of their eponymous imprint - appearing for local institution Phonica here. "Still Hope" sees them collaborate with Anthony Anaxagorou, a British born Cypriot award winning poet and essayist. His powerful vocal delivery accompanies the duo's emotive exploration in deepness. They deliver a remix up next in the form of the Secretsundaze Poems In The Heart Floor version, which goes for a second wave Detroit style of vibe. Speaking of which, the Motor City's favorite son Wajeed takes over the B side with two magnificent remixes. The Waajeed Detroit Hardcore dub goes for a massive Panorama Bar style vibe, while the Waajeed Searching dub goes into deeper and more evocative territory for the late night.

Review: As Stereofuse, Martin Worner and Thorsten Diegel released a handful of well-regarded EPs during the early to mid 2000s before splitting to concentrate on solo work. Undoubtedly the most sought-after of these is 2003's Casino EP, a Teutonic tech-house classic that has recently been changing hands for large sums of money online. Here is gets a new lease of life via a Phonica reissue. Opener "Black Jack" remains a near perfect exercise in bouncy, hypnotic deep house/tech-house fusion - all trippy looped riffs, breakbeat-house beats (very popular back in '03), spacey flourishes and booming bass - while "Hot Slot" and "Royal Flash" sound like they may have inspired the recent Parisian tech-house movement. We could go on. Suffice to say, you need this in your life.

Review: London wax institution Phonica continue to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a label in deep-digging, highly eclectic style. This fourth sampler continues to hint at a much larger VA album with a wide range of sounds across the techno/jungle axis. Tim Reaper & Comfort Zone get us in the groove with the savage drum funk of 'Subterranean' while Toby Tobias eases down the tempo and takes us to some mystical places on the Balearic-on-Mars funk of 'On My Mind'. Meanwhile on the flip Shy One goes full-on Co-Op / Bugz vibes with its sparse broken beat jazziness while Orphic's Kieran Jandu closes the EP on a bumping early 90s-inspired techno roll-out. Happy anniversary Phonica.

Review: Under the Yak alias, Steel City producer John Randall has previously plied his wares on Version, 3024 and R&S, offering up distinctively percussive tracks that sit somewhere between techno and bass music. His latest outing - this time for Phonica Records - delivers more hard-to-pigeonhole goodness for discerning dancefloors. Opener "Zip" peppers African style tribal drums and raw Motor City techno bass with the kind of ear-catching bleeps that were once a Steel City staple, before the jumpy and upbeat "Guevenne Groove" wraps positive, glassy-eyed synthesizer motifs around sweaty, loose-limbed live drumming. "Fret" is a spaced out, bass-heavy two-step number laden with intergalactic electronics and undulating bass, while closing cut "Gerudo" brilliantly joins the dots between tribal rhythms and shimmering deep house.

Review: Sheffield selector Al Zanders stamped his authority all over 2016, delivering acclaimed EPs for Wolf Music and his own A-Z Records stable. Here his seemingly unstoppable rise continues via a fine two-tracker for Soho store Phonica's in-house label. First up is the magical "There is Rhythm", a warm, trippy and pleasingly bass-heavy deep house cut rich in saucer-eyed synthesizer arpeggio lines, layered hand percussion, sparkling pianos and astonishingly loved-up breakdowns. The glassy-eyed feel continues on the virtual flipside, where he underpins psychedelic-era dream-pop samples - drenched in copious amounts of reverb - with a crunchy drum machine beat. By rights, it shouldn't work, but it most definitely does (thanks, in no small part, to the righteousness of his mind-altering analogue bassline and sweaty percussion hits).
