Review:
For the first time ever since the mid-80s, Robert Fripp's God Save The Queen is now avaialble on fresh vinyl once more. It was the second solo album from Fripp and is made up almost entirely of so-called 'Frippertronics,' which means much of the record was performed by improvisation. Under each track are solid drums and bass to get the grooves going and guitar loops for the five tracks were recorded live in concert during 1979. It's a real left turn of an album and one that can be as mesmerising as it can wild.

Review: Robert Fripp's pioneering work in electronic music reached its influential peak with the so-called Frippertronics tour of 1979. Creating compelling soundscapes out of tape loops might not seem revolutionary now, but it certainly was at the time, and out of the tour came this limited and highly prized album, perhaps the most sincere recorded document of Fripp's creative breakthrough. Now Let The Power Fall is being pressed on vinyl for the first time since its initial release on Editions EG in the 80s, and it comes with additional versions of '1984' never heard before.

Review: Back in the early-to-mid 1990s, Robert Fripp collaborated with numerous ambient house-era electronic artists, including the Orb (see the largely forgotten FFWD>> album) and The Grid, who invited the long-time Brian Eno collaborator to recording sessions back in 1992. While some of the latter material made it onto their '90s albums, much of Fripp's work - dreamy guitar textures, drone works and other electronic experiments -was left in their archive. Leviathan is based around these unissued recordings, with Dave Ball and Richard Norris adding their own new sounds to create a string of beautiful, meditative, and picturesque ambient compositions that sit somewhere between their own ambient works, Norris's recent modular electronic explorations, and the forementioned FFWD>> project.

The Sheltering Sky (Cap D'Agde, Aug 26th) (9:32)
Review: Sheltering Skies, the live album from King Crimson, offers a compelling snapshot of the band's dynamic 1980s line up. Recorded during a vibrant performance in Frejus, France, in August 1982, the album captures the band at the height of their powers. With material from their recent albums Discipline and Beat, King Crimson performs a blend of intricate compositions and improvisational abilities. The excitement and energy of the audience are palpable throughout the recording, reflecting the band's ability to stun crowds with their unique blend of progressive rock and experimental jazz. Classics like 'Red' and 'Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part Two' are performed with renewed vigour, enhanced by the freshness of the lineup and the enthusiasm of the musicians. This release marks the first time this live recording has been available on vinyl, pressed on 200-gram discs for optimal sound quality. For fans of King Crimson and enthusiasts of progressive rock, Sheltering Skies" promises to be an important release for fans of the band.

Review: King Crimson of the 1970s sounded very different from the band that made this Discipline album with a newly formed line-up of Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Adrian Belew and Tony Levin seven years after the band first broke up. It is now 40 years young so gets the requisite reissue treatment and has also been remastered for the occasion. It comes on a mighty hefty 200g vinyl so can be played extra loud, just as it should. The record mixes up electronica, funk, pure pop, modern avant-garde and much more and was a chart success in many different countries around the world.

Review: USA, King Crimson's second live album, originally released in 1975, gets a well-deserved deluxe reissue. This album captures the band's final performances from their 1974 "USA" tour, showcasing one of their strongest line-ups: Robert Fripp, Eddie Jobson, David Cross, John Wetton, and Bill Bruford. The reissue features the original six tracks plus three additional songs from the 2002 30th Anniversary Edition. Recorded primarily at the Casino in Asbury Park on June 28, 1974, with one track from the Palace Theatre in Providence, this album exemplifies King Crimson's live prowess. Highlights include the thunderous 'Larks' Tongues in Aspic (Part II),' the atmospheric 'Exiles,' and the intense 'Fracture.' The inclusion of 'Starless,' from their Red album, is particularly noteworthy, as it's one of their finest compositions. '21st Century Schizoid Man,' a staple from their debut album, and the improvisational 'Asbury Park' add to the album's diversity. The deluxe edition's sound quality is exceptional, with added violin and keyboard parts by Jobson enhancing the experience. This reissue surpasses Earthbound, their previous live album, in every aspect - musicianship, setlist, and production. USA stands as a quintessential live album, capturing King Crimson at their creative peak.

Review: Music Is Our Friend serves as the final release from progressive rock giants King Crimson; a live album recorded during their 2021 US farewell tour. Originally planned for 2020 but delayed an entire year due to the pandemic, several shows were to be moved due to extreme weather, though the band didn't end up cancelling a single date. Labelled as an official bootleg, the primary bulk of material comes from the final Washington stop, apart from the last four cuts which were taken from the pre-tour "Friends & Family" show in Albany. Spread out over a beastly 200 gram 3xLP collection, clocking in at a mammoth two and a quarter hours, and spanning their decades-long, monolithic discography, this bootie is a must have for fans, who, for no other fathomable reason, may never get to experience purchasing a new release adorned with the moniker of the great king ever again. At least we still have Robert Fripp's YouTube covers with wife Toyah Willcox to entertain us into oblivion.

Review: King Crimson's iconic 1974 album Red returns with a stunning 50th Anniversary reissue on a 200g import double LP set, showcasing a fresh audio experience. The first LP features new 2024 stereo mixes by Steven Wilson, renowned for his meticulous work in remastering classic albums. The second LP delivers David Singleton's 2024 Elemental Mixes, offering a distinctive sonic perspective with enhanced instrument separation and previously unreleased elements. Recorded during a period of intense touring and creative evolution, Red stands as a pinnacle of Crimson's 70s output. The band, then a formidable trio, crafted this masterpiece at London's Olympic Studios, incorporating contributions from former members and friends. The album's powerful fusion of progressive rock elements has cemented its status as a seminal influence across decades, and with Jason Mitchell's mastering at Loud Mastering ensuring optimal sound quality, this reissue is an exciting release for collectors and aficionados, promising a richly detailed listening experience of one of rock's enduring classics.

Review: King Crimson's 1973 album Larks' Tongues In Aspic hears its 50th anniversary reissue version, and will be celebrated with two comprehensive sets, a 2 CD/2 Blu-ray set and a double LP on 200 gram vinyl one. With a heavier emphasis on live improvisation, doomy buildups, percussive acoutremenets and a buzzing but pristine rock grandeur, Larks' Tongues in Aspic was nonetheless recorded over a short period from mid-January to the beginning of February 1973 and released in March, doing justice to the band's rep for quick turnarounds and veneration as performing masters.

Review: Following the meltdown of the original King Crimson lineup, Ian McDonald and Michael Giles brought brother Peter Giles back, which helps to account, in some ways, for the resemblance of this album to the 1968 Giles, Giles & Fripp recordings. An effort by the pair to reignite their solo careers after a tumultuous end, this is an especially popular curio for King Crimson fans, but nonetheless came as a flop in the wider commercial arena. McDonald and Giles were together known for exploring lighter, more pastoral themes and sounds, retaining many of their earlier King Crimson-emic curiosities but refusing to indulge its darker, doomier tendencies - a theme certainly on display here on this Panegyric reissue.

Review: The legacy of XTC simultaneously reveals the inner workings and inflexibility of the music industry and how easy it is to be incredibly talented and forward-thinking yet still languish in relative obscurity. Of course most musos are pretty familiar with these New Wavers, but at least some of that knowledge has been garnered retrospectively, through revisiting and reappraising.

'Oranges & Lemons', first released in 1989, is the band at their smash hit-potential best, and also on the cusp of their eventual decline. It's as fresh as any that came before - far more than just New Wave happening here (synth pop, DIY indie), and nobody was looking to reign anything in, allowing the sprawling contents to span two whole discs unabridged. Another piece of compelling evidence to say that XTC's main problems were the fact managers and labels didn't really get what they were aiming for, musically, rather than their notorious avoidance of tours.

Review: XTC's cult 1984 album 'The Big Express' was essentially just that - a 'big expression' of brash indie noise, tempered by the shadow of the industrial old Wiltshire town in which the band grew up, Swindon. In true post-punk fashion, the band combined the electronic Linndrum with guitar, bass and vocals. But the 'Express', in their words, wasn't just self-expression; electronic rock, to XTC, also reflected the quite literal concept of the 'railway express', reflecting Swindon's reputation as one of the core towns behind the UK's railway system. A remarkable album, and a slice of history at that.

Review: The reissued and remastered CD of XTC's Skylarking, now with added bonus material including a 5.1 mix, revisits the band's dynamic collaboration with producer Todd Rundgren. Released in 1986, the album showed the band's transformation into a studio-only group after frontman Andy Partridge's decision to stop touring. The album featured the band's breakthrough hit 'Dear God' that helped catapult them to one of the leaders of alternative music . This remastered edition enhances the intricate, lush arrangements of tracks like 'Summer's Cauldron' and 'Season Cycle,' highlighting the album's day-in-the-life concept conceived by Rundgren. Rundgren's influence is evident in the album's seamless transitions and cohesive narrative, despite the behind-the-scenes tension with Partridge. The producer's knack for innovative arrangements and Partridge's introspective lyrics blend into a compelling collection of songs. Colin Moulding's pastoral contributions, such as 'Grass' and 'The Meeting Place,' add depth and charm to the album. The added 5.1 mix and bonus material bring a fresh perspective to this classic, allowing fans to experience Skylarking in a new light. From the upbeat 'Earn Enough for Us' to the reflective 'Dying' and 'Sacrificial Bonfire,' the album remains an important piece in XTC's creative growth and Rundgren's visionary production.

Review: XTC's 1986 album Skylarking, under the production of Todd Rundgren, is a remarkable example of chamber-pop that traverses a single day through its evocative tracks. The recording process was marked by friction, with Rundgren's dominant style clashing with Andy Partridge's precise vision. Nonetheless, Rundgren's choice to structure the album to reflect the progression of a dayifrom the morning's 'Summer's Cauldron' to the evening's 'Dying' and 'Sacrificial Bonfire'iprovided a unifying narrative arc. With amazing material like 'Dear God', this made for a winning combination in laying out the album as a whole. Songs like 'Grass' and 'The Meeting Place' highlight the band's flair for pastoral storytelling, while "Earn Enough for Us" poignantly explores themes of love and financial struggle. Despite the behind-the-scenes turmoil, the album's lush arrangements and insightful lyrics present a whimsical, profound perspective on the natural world, establishing Skylarking as a standout work in XTC's catalog. Now, reissued by Steven Wilson, this version is perhaps the most ideal one to have.
