Review: Los Angeles crusted hardcore bruisers CNTS delivered a venomous statement of intent with their beautifully titled 2019 debut full-length Cunts, but sadly only had a brief opportunity to tour in support of the project before the world closed its doors in early 2020. Unfortunately, any and all future plans would be put on hold following vocalist Matt Cronk being injured in a car crash which resulted in a surgical error leading to a paralyzed vocal cord. Though members turned to other projects whilst awaiting/praying for Cronk's recovery (both drummer Kevin Avery and guitarist Mike Crain are members of Retox with the latter also being part of the Mike Patton-fronted Dead Cross), it wouldn't be until the winter of last year that, against all doctor's predictions, Cronk's voice would return and with it, a bevvy of new gripes and grievances to expel. Sardonically titled Thoughts & Prayers, and receiving distribution through the aforementioned Mike Patton's Ipecac label, prepare for an even more depraved batch of jagged, fuzzed-out, cynical and severely pissed off hardcore headcavers.

Review: Following their succinctly titled 2019 debut full-length Cunts, the Los Angeles based hardcore mob of the same name (sans the one vowel), would only briefly tour the project before the 2020 pandemic put a stop to all live shows. During this time, vocalist Matt Cronk suffered from a paralyzed vocal cord as result of a surgical error following a car crash injury. With other members Kevin Avery and guitarist Mike Crain keeping busy in Retox while the latter also serves as bass-man for Mike Patton-fronted Dead Cross, Cronk recovered against any medical predictions and between his personal strife and the state of utter division across the US, he has a whole load of hate to get off his chest on their cynical sophomore statement, Thoughts & Prayers.

Review: The first official album released through Ipecac Records; the label of absurdist vocalist extraordinaire Mike Patton (Faith No More, a million other projects), was this self-titled debut from Fantomas, originally unveiled in 1999. A supergroup with no absolutely zero desire to make it easy on listeners, this culmination of Melvins mastermind Buzz Osborne on guitar, Mr Bungle/Tomahawk/regular Patton cohort Trevor Dunn on bass and Slayer's Dame Lombardo behind the kit, would coalesce all of their most extreme creative proclivities into one bizarre maelstrom of avant-garde cacophony that can barely be fit into the metal genre. Intended as the musical accompaniment to a fictitious comic book, with all track titles even listed as chapter/page numbers (a unique theme that would follow into all subsequent albums), the work has since been praised for its sonic abandon and artistic fearlessness, with one critic once referring to their avant-garde jazzy grindcore as "dada-metal". The project would also finally offer Patton the opportunity to prioritise his experimental forms of voice music and scat singing over traditional vocal cadence or standard lyricism.

Review: Originally released in 2005, the fourth (and subsequently final) album from avant-garde metal absurdist supergroup Fantomas (made up of Faith No More vocalist extraordinaire Mike Patton, Melvin's Buzz Osborne, Slayer's Dave Lombardo, and Mr. Bungle/Tomahawk/reliable Patton bassist Trevor Dunn), furthered their "dada-metal" sonic experimentations to literal cartoon levels of bizzarro wonder. Pulling from plunderphonics to craft a 30-track audible calendar of obscure holidays throughout the month of April, the pieces warp and meander like a grindcore band playing lounge music for anime soundtracks. If that sounds ludicrous and alienating, don't worry, as that only indicates you're sane. Considered almost too challenging for even the most devout of Patton's faithful followers, can you handle the unhinged mayhem of Suspended Animation? The record also comes complete with an accompanying mini-calendar to track the hallucinogenic journey.

Review: A collaborative album made and released by Mike Patton and NYC's hip-hop DJ trio the X-Ecutioners, General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners is a landmark album in the big-smoked turntablists' discog, thanks to its then-newfangled embrace of elements of two nascent genres: free jazz and glitch. In fact, the album is themed around a war between the two vastly different styles, which makes it a worthy, but lesser-known contemporary to many other artists fusing the styles at the time, such as Amon Tobin. However, this album is more in the vein of Wu-Tang than future angst; this reissue via Ipecac serves to rejolt its underground infamy.

Review: Gone Dark, the sophomore album from Human Impact, pushes the boundaries of noise-rock with a fiercer, more streamlined approach. The band, composed of Unsane's Chris Spencer, Cop Shoot Cop's Jim Coleman, Made Out of Babies' Eric Cooper, and Daughters' Jon Syverson, delivers a potent blend of taut grooves, jagged guitar riffs, and raw vocal intensity. This release is not merely a cry from the void but a powerful declaration of defiance against a world teetering on the brink. Following their self-titled debut, Gone Dark represents a significant evolution, capturing the visceral energy of their live performances. Spencer emphasises the band's intent to create something rawer and more aggressive, which is evident throughout the album's tightly interwoven tracks and interstitial pieces, mirroring the flow of a live show. Recorded with co-producer Andrew Schneider at Austin's Cedar Creek Studio, the album benefits from the newly solidified rhythm section, with Cooper and Syverson's contributions adding heft and precision. The result is a cohesive, relentless sonic assault that showcases the band's full understanding of their identity. Gone Dark is a potent, focused statement from a group that continues to refine its craft, delivering an album that is enduring, resilience and aggressive.

Review: Mosquito Control and The Red Sea served as the first two officially released EPs from Boston post-metal outfit Isis. While the band had recorded two early demos prior, these projects marked the first formative material before settling into their unique brand of atmospheric, heaving prog-sludge by the arrival of their full-length debut Celestial. While somewhat rough around the proverbial edges when compared to their later works, this collection still teems with nuanced aggression and an artistic finesse that put their contemporaries to shame. Originally released in 1998 and 1999 respectively, this compilation offers longtime followers and newcomers alike a chance to experience these vital experiments more than two decades after the fact in their most undiluted form.

Review: The Jesus Lizard's return with Rack marks a significant moment for fans of post-hardcore. Their first album since 1998's Blue, this release is a testament to their enduring influence and sound. 'Hide & Seek,' the lead single, is a vibrant track that showcases the band's signature style, with David Yow's vocals leading the charge. The album as a whole feels fresh yet familiar, with nods to their past but a clear focus on new directions. Recorded with producer Paul Allen, the band sounds as tight and energetic as ever, showcasing their remarkable chemistry. Overall, Rack is a welcome return from a band that has left an indelible mark on the post-hardcore genre.

Review: Grunge heroes The Jesus Lizard return after 26 years with Rack, a raw and intense experience reminiscent of their early 90s work with Steve Albini with plenty of the chaotic energy and tight musicianship that defined the band's legacy. The lead track, 'Hide and Seek,' is a rampaging opener filled with hooks that showcase the band's ability to merge aggressive rock with catchy elements. Other tracks, like 'Moto(R)' and 'Lord Godiva,' blend humor and grit, while 'What If?' and 'Armistice Day' explore moodier, more introspective territories. The album maintains a polished yet raw sound, balancing sophistication with pure, punk-rock mayhem. David Yow's vocals remain as unhinged as ever, supported by Duane Denison's piercing guitar riffs, David Wm. Sims' powerful bass lines, and Mac McNeilly's thunderous drumming.

Review: The Jesus Lizard's first new music in 26 years,' Hide & Seek', is out now via Ipecac Recordings, and it's turning heads everywhere. Produced by Paul Allen, the track is a thrilling precursor to their forthcoming album, Rack.. The Chicago noise rock iconsiDavid Yow, Duane Denison, David Wm. Sims, and Mac McNeillyirecapture their legendary raw energy and chaotic brilliance. 'Hide & Seek' boasts hooks and an abrasive edge that Yow humorously questions as "pop." Recorded live at Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney's Audio Eagle studio, Rack features 11 tracks that blend lunging momentum, nuanced instrumentation, and Yow's signature unhinged vocals. The band's chemistry shines, with Yow's confessional lyrics and Denison's piercing leads delivering emotional punch. Embodying the balance between sophistication and punk-rock abandon, Rack will excited 90s rock fans without a doubt. The Jesus Lizard's return is more than a nostalgia trip; it's a reaffirmation of their influential legacy and a thrilling addition to it.

Review: Melvins' back catalogue is so strong that they could make a living just re-releasing the hell out of it. But Melvins' Buzz Osborne is a true punk and has such an unrelenting passion for music that they will never stop. The good thing is that he is under no illusions that he's great... Melvins in 2025 sound absolutely incredible, like Black Sabbath good. The line-up for this album takes things back to 1983 as the band's original drummer Mike Dillard makes a relatively rare appearance. It's only the third album he's made with Buzz Osborne, but absolutely is it gold when it happens. Dillard famously played in a short-lived pre Nirvana group with Kurt Cobain called Fecal Matter and there's certainly parallels to Nirvana's frantic approach to drums on this album. In terms of the rest of the music it's tuneful in a heavy way and it's that balance between the two that was the cornerstone of grunge and you can hear how Melvins became such a prevalent influence, playing a role in shaping the sound of Nirvana, Soundgarden and countless others.

Review: The trailblazing godfather of grunge, Buzz Osborne, is the sole constant member of Melvins, but he's not burned his bridges. He's invited back original drummer Mike Dillard (with who he founded the band in 1983), along with Void Maines and Ni Maîtres, for the third Melvins 1983 album, the previous two being Tres Cabrones (2013) and Working With God (2021). They're on the form of their life with the new album; it is ferocious and exhilarating. A standout is the lead single 'Thunderball', which is a celebration of the drums. You can hear Dillard hitting his snare with unparalleled force and nailing countless fills. Meanwhile, Osborne's melodic and heavy guitar playing strikes a perfect balance. Vocally, Osborne has the highest level of conviction; he truly belies his years. And with Black Sabbath calling it a day very soon, we need Melvins 1983 more than ever.

Review: The Melvins, known for their unapologetically experimental and abrasive sound, continue their legacy of sonic exploration with Tarantula Heart, set for release via Ipecac Recordings. The album, featuring a five-track lineup, including the sprawling 19-minute opener 'Pain Equals Funny, which displays the band's penchant for pushing the boundaries of conventional music. One of the album's defining features is the incorporation of dual drum parts, with longtime Melvins drummer Dale Crover teaming up with Roy for an impressive display of rhythmic complexity. This collaboration adds a new dimension to the Melvins' sound, further solidifying their reputation as pioneers of unconventional music. Recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Toshi Kasai, a longtime collaborator of the band, Tarantula Heart adds to the album's eclectic sonic palette. While The Melvins may never achieve mainstream success due to their avant-garde approach, this album stands by their unwavering commitment to artistic integrity and innovation, making it a must-listen for fans of boundary-pushing music everywhere.

Review: San-Fran experimental rockers Oxbow dedicated their eighth album Love's Holiday to familial renewals, marking the point at which guitarist Niko Wenner's two children were born shortly after his father's death. Despite the immediate inspirations, the album also cycles through many of the more all-encompassing kinds of live humans may encounter, from romantic to tragic. We hear the band segue through gargantuan plains of looping guitar and reverb-drenched vocals from lead vocalist Dan Adams; ostensibly, it sounds closer to an exploration of grief than commonly received ideas of "love", although relatively few pop-cultural ideas of love keep it real enough to reflect the strife that comes with it.

Review: Alessandro Asso Stefana's debut self-titled album showcases his diverse musical range as he effortlessly incorporates instruments and styles from rootsy folk and primitive blues to psychedelia, soundtracks, and ambient explorations. Drawing from the Smithsonian Folkways archives, he integrates Roscoe Holcomb's historic voice for a great blend of past and present. Each track unfolds like a little musical vignette that merges various instruments from different eras-such as the Marxophone, pedal steel guitars, and psychedelic organs. The second half of the album features Holcomb's voice, bridging folk traditions with modern improvisation and in all the record suspends you between earth and sky.

Review: Legendary composer and producer Jean Claude Vannier - best known for his work with Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin - is back following his 2019 collaboration with Mike Patton on Corpse Flower. While loosely categorised as French pop, this instrumental album also fits within the classical realm thanks to its mandolin and accordion. Vannier brings nearly 60 years of experience to this album which features artists like Vincent Beer-Demander and Gregory Daltin. The results offer a poetic, orchestral soundscape that seamlessly intertwines mandolin, accordion and unexpected orchestration to evoke deep emotion.
