Review: The cult of Stardew Valley is real - the sweet-natured indie farm simulator became a runaway success for people wanting a little gentle escapism in their screen time. As well as the easy pace of the gameplay, the music composed by ConcernedApe was a big factor in the appeal. So much so, Coffee Date and DJ Cutman have created a fully-fledged tribute album they bill as "Lofi beats to farm and make friends to." If you're familiar with the game then you know this music already, and if not, perhaps this level of pleasant is exactly what you need in your life.
Review: As you might well have guessed from the title, Chilltendo Deluxe is a 24-track collection of tributes to the musical universe of Nintendo. They are all served up in a lofi hip-hop style with elements of chillwave and vapourware from producer Jokabi who also designed the artwork. These super covers take in music from Pokemon, Smash Bros, Mario, Undertale, Legend of Zelda, Chrono Trigger and Okami and all the compositions are licensed and have been used with permission. It's a superb soundtrack to a lay afternoon packed with subtle nostalgic hints to your lost video game-obsessed youth.
Review: There is a huge interest in video game soundtracks as well as game-themed LPs and tributes right now and few are as popular as Mikel's Zelda & Chill series. This third volume offers up 14 brand-new and super fresh beats from the world of the Legend of Zelda. It comes five years after the first volume which broke new ground and got rave reviews across the board. It paved the way for the trend that is now so popular and this new volume is another gorgeous one packed with zoned out sounds, deep cuts and classics from the much loved Zelda series including Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask amongst more.
Review: There must be something in the air right now because a whole bunch of superb video game soundtracks seemed to have arrived on our racks in recent weeks. First came Minecraft, Donkey Kong, Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion and now Tune In With Chewie on CameChops. Samus & Chill is a fine album that flips the the dark original Metroid soundtrack into something totally blissed out and laid back with lofi hip-hop, plenty of soft piano chords, smooth vintage synths and much more making this a really escapist listen.
