Review: Has A Shadow have found themselves lurking iin the psych scene of late, yet this Guadalajara-birthed troupe have a decidedly more sepulchral and sullen approach, stalking an audial graveyard equal parts haunted by the post-punk filigree of Bauhaus, the motorik attack of The Soft Moon, the murky drone of The Sisters Of Mercy and the languorous swirl of Deerhunter. Repetitive and rapturous, 'Sorrow Tomorrow' is a considerable alchemical triumph, with sunglasses-after-dark cool co-existing happily with experimental elan.

Review: 40 years after the band's formation, The Jesus & Mary Chain have delivered their eighth studio album, their first full length release of new material for seven years. Admirably, the Reid brothers have refused to rest on their laurels and offer-up something undeniably nostalgic - catnip for long term fans if you will - but instead have fused elements of their familiar sound and style with plenty of fresh ideas. There are audible nods to Suicide, Kraftwerk and the improvisational practices of jazz, but also tons of fuzz, feedback and aural chaos. It's an invigorating mixture that's best exemplified by 'Jamcod', where the pair's red-raw guitars, low-slung bass and acid-fried vocals rise above a skittish electro beat, the slipped shoegaze-goes-dreampop flex of 'Chemical Animal', and the pleasingly spiky and punchy 'Girl 71'.

Review: Everything from their name down would lead one to suspect that Sonic Jesus were every inch the workaday psych band, yet 'Grace' displays a troupe ready to expand and elaborate on their original paradigm to broader horizons. The relentless hammering rhythm section is still in place, as well as the tendencies towards audial maximalism, yet the melodic melancholia aligns this languid foursome more with the contemporary worshippers at the church of Joy Division such as Editors and Interpol, using synth textures and experimental approaches to elucidate their midnight moods. Spiritually with their heart still very much in the '80s. Grace nonetheless shows Sonic Jesus displaying substance to match their sunglasses-after-dark style.

Review: Smokey, heavy, whiskey-soaked and dramatic, Manchester's The Underground Youth provide us with a new album following the two they dropped in 2017. There's something incredibly UK about the band and their sound, which comes with a touch of Madchester about them too for good measure. Album opener "Sins" is about as drastic as anything Nick Cave could come up with, while there's echoes of Joy Division in Craig Dyer's voice throughout, while simultaneously there's something undeniably post-punk about the band's radical production. Edgy, raw and stone-faced yet full of flavour and deep seated in the malaise of melancholic shoegaze, this album title sets it all up really: Montage Images Of Lust & Fear.

Review: This Manchester based troupe have made a name for themselves in the more traditional end of the psych scene of late, yet their sound owes just as much to the post-punk of the early-'80s as it does the lineage that follows from the Velvets through Loop - these languorous and deliriously melodious ditties bring to mind the gorgeous gloom of The Chameleons, and what one used to term 'raincoat bands' in times of yore, yet filtered through JAMC attitude and BRMC swagger. Nonetheless, the songcraft and grasp of atmospherics here show that there's more to this band than Ray-Banned and leather jacketed cool.
