Review: Since returning to action last year following a near eight-year hiatus, Pete Swanson and Jed Binderman's Freedom To Spend label has been on an impressive run of form. Predictably "Music and Poetry of the Kesh" is another doozy. It was first released on cassette way back in 1985 and saw experimental composer Todd Barton (then still finding his feet in music) and science fiction writer and poet Ursula K De Guin join forces for the first and only time. It's a curious but thoroughly absorbing and entertaining set that mixes and mangles spoken word passages, experimental choral pieces, crackling filed recordings, dreamy analogue electronics, Berlin School ambient, elements of pastoral folk and more than a few nods towards the giants of American minimalism.

Review: Originally out in 1987 through the Grabaciones Accidentales label, Pep Llopis' Poiemusia La Nau Dels Argonautes has remind something of a mecca among the more avid experimental diggers out there. The Spanish keyboard player and vocalist was a bit of a pioneer in his days, but it's only in more recent years that his name has proliferated across the electronic scene, and it's thanks to labels like Freedom To Spend that we are able to enjoy this music in its original format (and not have to pay some serious bucks on the second-hand market!). The LP itself is a wonderful excursion through vast, dream-like polyphonies that manage to create a world of their own. Much like the soundtracks of vintage games like Zelda, this album is in a category of its own, blending different, liquid-like synths with a charm that is rare to find elsewhere. Pensive, introspective but altogether euphoric, Llopis' music is an absolute pleasure to listen to. This is a special one - act fast!
