Get What's Right (3:51)
Review: In our eyes, Children Of Zeus can do no wrong. Then again, they've yet to release a duff record, so it's hardly a controversial opinion. Their latest outing on First Word is another two-track gem. A-side "Royal" is particularly sumptuous, with the Manchester duo delivering a soul slow jam so deep, sugary and musically rich that you might want to take it home to meet your parents right away. Honestly, it's seriously seductive. Flipside "Get What's Right" is a little more hip-hop flavoured (check the crunchy breaks) but every bit as smooth and soulful, with the pair's vocals riding atop a suitably twinkly, late-night musical soundscape.

Children Of Zeus & Black Milk - "Won't End Well" (3:06)
Tall Black Guy & Allysha Joy - "Sip Of You" (3:36)
Review: Contemporary hip hop projects don't come much hotter than this one, with features some of the genre's most vital modern talent talents on the legendary First World label. First up we have Manchester outfit Children of Zeus paired with Black Milk for 'Won't End Well,' a gloriously sweet cut with hard-hitting bars, deep beats and soul to spare. The one and only beat maker extraordinaire Tall Black Guy then joins forces with Allysha Joy for 'Sip Of You.' It has swirling and spaces out synths, gentle beat lurches and angelic neo-soul vocals up top. Perfection.

All The Way (feat Tyler Daley & Kaidi Tatham) (4:00)
All The Way (feat Tyler Daley & Kaidi Tatham - Flutestrumental) (3:59)
Review: A warm welcome back to the Darkhouse Family, Cardiff's finest purveyors of soul-fired instrumental hip-hop and jazz-funk flavoured broken beats. The good news is that "All The Way", which features the combined talents of guests Tyler Daley and Kaidi Tatham, is every bit as good as anything on their superb 2017 album "The Offering". The A-side original version, in particular, is superb - a languid chunk of head-nodding hip-hop soul rich in double bass, drowsy jazz horns, twinkling pianos and impassioned, emotive vocals. That said, the instrumental flipside revision, which includes extended flute solos where the vocals once say, is also impeccable.

Seismic Shift (4:33)
Elevate (4:01)
Review: Eye Of The High make a welcome debut on the mighty First Word Records label here with some stellar Brit-funk goodness. This vinyl-only release from the collaborative project headed by DJ and producer and see time Talking Loud artists Femi Fem and Glen Scott opens with the glorious 'Seismic Shift.' The drums are tinged with an Afro skip, the vocals are reminiscent of a 90s heyday for this sound and the cosmic synths stretch out to the sun. 'Elevate' has more funk in its bones and steel drums laced into the skipping groove. Two fresh and feel-good gems for sure.

Criminality
Review: Formed via the Broadway musical Fela!, The Fontanelles serve up their debut on the consistently exciting (and wonderfully unpredictable) First Word imprint. The result is two pieces of raw, emphatic Afro funk. "Pinprick" has a touch of the snake charmer about it with eastern minor key phrases and wild jazz noodles on the muted sax. "Criminality" comes armed with much more gusto with lively drums and a powerful carnival attitude. Strange name but apt... Anyone with a penchant for Afro funk will have soft spot for The Fontanelles before long.

Faded From The Jump (3:31)
Review: First Word Records present an AA side collaboration from [ K S R ] and Konny Kon (Children of Zeus) titled 'Part of the Plan/Faded From The Jump' on 7" vinyl and digital. 'Part of the Plan' channels classic soul, echoing the timeless feel of Stax and Atlantic, with [ K S R ]'s rich vocals and Konny's laidback production. 'Faded from the Jump' explores future r&b and neo-soul, capturing their Manny street soul essence. A true showcase of modern British soul music.

BBQ & Pimm's
Review: Home to the likes of 6ix Toys and Kidkanevil, First Word know their funk like a vicar knows his bible. You can add the French hip-hop minded duo Souleance to that talent list, too; here they've given us four sterling jams that sit perfectly between smoky home listening and naughty club bashing. From the eastern European skank of "BBQ & Pimms" to the stop/start disco horn fusion of the title track via the trad-funk sizzles of "L'Insouleance" there is nothing not to like across the whole EP.

Guili (4:46)
Toro (3:46)
Review: Fulgeance and Soulist continue their beautiful collaborative work together with a record that will tickle you pink. Literally... 'Guili' means tickle in French. Paying homage to acts like Azymuth, 'Guili' is a full adventure that never sits still as the synths and drums lead us into a carnivalesque groove laced with plenty of acid and a delicious slap bass section. 'Toro' continues this organic, live groove feeling with even bigger keys and loose limbed drums driving us to an almighty and chaotic breakdown. For added magic Art Of Tones is on side with a crucial remix. What a session.

Schack
La Ville Rose
Tryin'
Review: Chunky grooves from French production outfit Souleance, who released this brand new single ahead of the release of their debut album La Belle Vie. La Gourmandise features three tracks; first up, "Schack" has soundtrack stylised brass stabs, handclap rhythms, female wailing and a killer bassline. Up next, "La Ville Rose" uses heavy breaks underpinning a melancholic female vocal, while "Tryin" is a modern day soul fired love song with sampled vocals and stuttering beats.

Tall Black Guy - "I Will Never Know" (feat Moonchild - 14KT IAMABEENIE remix) (4:25)
14KT - "The Power Of Same" (feat Muhsinah - Tall Black Guy remix) (4:01)
Review: First Word's latest must-have 12" sees label regulars Tall Black Guy (AKA hip-hop beat-maker Terrel Wallace) and self-proclaimed "chop artist" 14KT (real name Kendall Tucker) remix each other's tracks. The latter steps up first to re-configure Wallace's Moonchild collaboration "I Will Never Know" as a folksy, bass-heavy chunk of slipped soul/jazz fusion dripping with folksy acoustic guitars and ear-catching vocals. Wallace repays the compliment on the flip, delivering a warm, crispy and R&B-influenced hip-hop soul revision of recent single "The Power Of Same", featuring the seductive vocals of Muhsinah. If soul, jazz and hip-hop all float your boat, this should be an essential purchase.

Tall Black Guy - "One To One"
Mr Thing - "Changes"
Eric Lau - "Chop For Mr Thing"
Kidkanevil - "Loopin' III"
Review: Record Store Day Edition: Concepts for the annual Record Store Day don't get better than this. Tall Black Guy, Eric Lau and Kidkanevil were invited to Mr Thing's gaff and explore his sizeable vinyl collection. They could sample anything they wished... But, as the title says, no vinyl could leave his house. The result is four examples of pure sample artistry. Eric Lau's "Chop For Mr Thing" takes a Latin strummer and stretches out its harmony over a nagging beats with really cool edits and space. Kidkanevil opts for a sludgier hip-hop approach where one simple loop opens and closes at different spaces over a nod-heavy beat. Elsewhere Tall Black Guy gets dreamy with a tripped out vocal sample and some stunning slippery bass action while Mr Thing provides the best schooling with a classic Dilla style loop that twists the full emphasis on one vocal cry and a weave of classic hip-hop cuts.
