Review: "People have described their music as ambient, although that's a description they don't care much for. It's certainly atmospheric and there's something about their sunny-sounding guitar that seemed appropriate to a book that, although published in 1927, didn't become popular in America until the 1960s."
So says writer and director Gerard McInulty about The Durutti Column, the group he drafted for the soundtrack to his 12 Stars group production of Treatise On The Steppenwolf, first staged in Glasgow in 2003. This is what that sounds like - call it what you like, essentially it's just beautiful music to captivate and enthral, without insisting on itself - and you also get an additional trio of extended movements that were used to score the Human Avatars art installation at MOSI, Manchester, in 2005. Review: The Invisible Girls is the name of legendary new wave production duo Martin Hannett (famous for his work as producer for Joy Division, New Order and Buzzcocks) and Steve Hopkins's band, and also this new collection of rare and unreleased recordings made throughout their career. Many of them have reportedly never been heard before. In fact the first five tracks on the album are a selection of previously unreleased 'Moods' recorded at the famous Strawberry Studios between 1980 and 1987. Elsewhere there are rare solo tracks by Hannett plus fine collabs with Section 25, Pauline Murray, Nico and Crispy Ambulance.

Review: Under the New Order banner, Peter Hook, Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert have given us some of the most iconic music of the last 35 years. The band helped to shape dance music into how we recognise it in this day and age, and it's fair to say that they helped to transform Manchester into another district of Detroit and Chicago back in the 1980s. This new compilation, out on the Factory Benelux imprint, features some of their most important and genre-defining dance work between 1981 and 1985, when the term Be Music was coined. While not under the New Order moniker, all of these tracks were produced by its various members - Section 25, A Certain Ratio, and 52nd Street are just some of the names on here, as well as a rampant selection of contemporary remixes from the likes of Marnie, Tim Burgess and Factory Floor. This is just unmissable - 10 out of 10.

Review: Legendary Blackpool post-punk, later electronic band Section 25 - consisting of brothers Larry and Vin Cassidy - first formed in 1978. Initial associations with Factory Records and frequent touring partners Joy Division were more than enough to propel them into the limelight, and the ensuing glory translates well into the modern day - as evidenced by Retrofit, their seventh album. First released in 2010, the album features new versions of some of their classic songs, such as 'Looking From A Hilltop', 'Dirty Disco' and 'Girls Don't Count'. A nostalgic, dreamy, and honest Northern electro/synth sound predominates, harking back to an unmistakable golden age. Now reissued on Factory's Belgian counterpart Factory Benelux, we hear a fresh LP remaster and a new track, 'Uberhymn'.

Review: Hailing fro Poulton-le-Fylde, a small town close to Blackpool, on the North West coast of England, Section 25 emerged at a historic crossroads for Britain as a whole. A time when the country was questioning the ingrained class structures that had defined it for centuries, not least in terms of equity and equality, when the economy on which the nation ran was crumbling under the weight of plummeting demand, creating an urgent need to move forward and modernise. From decimalisation of currency to Thatcherite deconstruction of industrial sectors such as mining, by the time the 1980s arrived the UK was essentially in a culture war. What's clear is that as a result of this societal rift, a period of incredible creativity began - not least in terms of music - with bands like Section 25 prime examples. 36 years after their inception, 2013's Dark Light proved they still had an ability to capture some of that synth pop, coldwave and electro magic. Review: Factory Records has retained a cult following well into the 21st Century. The imprint lent at least part of its name to a L250million arts centre in its Manchester hometown, opened in 2023, and those famous yellow and black stripes from the Hacienda appear everywhere from property developers to cookie cutter bars in the city. Section 25 may not be the first band that springs to mind when thinking about that legacy, but in many ways represent just how deep the talent ran through the roster. Outliving Factory itself, the Preston, Lancashire group reformed after a 13-year-hiatus in 2001, partly driven by just how much interest there was in their back catalogue. In 2007, they releases Part-Primitiv, a spellbinding collection of weird electronica, spooky synthdom, Roland pop, and forward-punching post-punk. A vital reminder of the outfit's quality, the impact remains on this reissue.

Review: Album number six from cult Factory Records lot Section 25, Nature & Degree marked a new era for a group that had already enjoyed a 13 year hiatus, bringing their first period to a close as the 1980s drew to an end, and dark synth pop and post punk took back seats to emerging noises such as grunge, garage rock, and shoegaze. Returning to activity from 2001, eight years on they presented this record, welcoming new members Stuart Hill and Steven Stringer in the process. Beth Cassidy, daughter of the iconic vocalist Jenny, also joins. Musically, the record is a classy sounding affair, largely swerving the kind of raw, gritty, driving tracks the band are often associated with in favour of glittering synths and rousing overture pop, and lite indie. Which is certainly no criticism. Instead, the result is an LP which is packed with beautiful emotional qualities.

Review: Glasgow post-punk underdog heroes, The Wake, arguably never achieved nor received the success they were due with their excellent gloomy, shivering early work. Often unfairly compared to Joy Division, which only got worse upon their touring with New Order who were their labelmates at the time; it only feels like now, four decades removed from the release of their seminal debut, 'Harmony', that naysayers have learned to appreciate the work for what a cornerstone of the genre it truly was. The, 'Harmony & Singles', compilation has been reissued on Factory Benelux, then bounced to LTM then right back to Factory again, and here, we arrive at yet another reissue, commemorating a somehow criminally underrated staple of post-punk history, one decade shy of a half-century ago. Review: Joy Division manager Rob Gretton talented spotted X-o-dus in the late seventies. They were a Manchester reggae band who you might know from their single 'English Black Boys.' It was produced by legendary UK dub don Dennis Blackbeard Bovell and lends its name to this newly remastered compilation which collects together seven of the group's best tracks on 500 copies of vinyl. That epic ten-minute single opens up with its meandering leads and hooky guitar riffs, then the likes of 'See Them A'Come' and 'Society' further showcase the band's laid-back, deeply immersive take on dub.
