Review: This classic from Don Cherry (one of many, in truth) was recorded in 1966 and released by Blue Note in August 1967 and it features a stellar lineup including Gato Barbieri, Henry Grimes, Ed Blackwell, Karl Berger, Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark and Pharoah Sanders. This album was a follow-up to Complete Communion and blends the same famously passionate improvisation with subtlety and shows Cherry's exceptional ability to balance intensity and restraint. It is rather frenzied but also well-controlled and is maybe Cherry's most gratifying work for Blue Note.

Review: Recorded and released in The Netherlands by Gerry Teekens for his Criss Cross label in 1985, Chet's Choice marked one of the best studio albums from Chet Baker's final years. He would die in The Netherlands after falling from the window of his hotel room in Amsterdam on May 13, 1988. Chet's Choice presents Baker, beautifully captured in stereo, singing and playing the trumpet in an intimate trio format with guitarist Philip Catherine (born in England but raised in Belgium, Chet frequently worked with him from 1983 to 1988) and Belgian bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse on most of the tracks (three tunes were taped during a second session with Dutch bassist Hein van de Geijn). This expanded edition presents the full seven tunes from the original album plus three songs that only previously appeared on the CD edition of Chet's Choice, as well as five amazing never before heard alternate takes, which add nearly 40 minutes of unreleased music to Chet Baker's superb catalogue.

These recordings of legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans, laid to high-quality tape in 1964, were discovered last year in the personal archive of jazz musician Ole Matthiessen. Now fully mastered, it's a genuine unheard "Holy grail" - a set of recordings that show the versatility and quality of Evans' playing. Basically, it's a fantastic collection of piano jazz numbers, with Evans either playing solo, or accompanied by little more than a drummer and a double bassist. If you love jazz, you need this in your life.

Review: American blues legend John Lee Hooker released Born In Mississippi Raised Up In Tennessee yack in 1973. It's a studio album that has been praised by modern comic Stewart lee who called the nine minute epic 'How Many More Years You Gonna Dog Me 'Round?' "superb." The rest of the tracks are heavy on the horns from George Bohanon and Oscar Brashear and have plenty of backing vocal action with the likes of Robert Hooker also playing plenty of big organ parts. These are all long jams that really take you on a trip - with plenty of standouts.

Review: Catch The Groove: Live At The Penthouse 1963-67 does what it says on the tin; with all of the performances heard on this set having previously unreleased, Latin jazz vibraphone legend Cal Tjader is heard with a variety of quintets at the seminal Pacific Northwest venue; he's heard backed by pianists Clare Fischer, Lonnie Hewitt and Al Zulaica, bassists Fred Schreiber, Terry Hilliard, Monk Montgomery and Stan Gilbert, drummers Johnny Rae and Carl Burnett, and percussionists Bill Fitch and Armando Peraza. Part of a new series homing in on live jazz greats by record producer and "Jazz Detective" Zev Feldman, Tjader more than fits into this retrospective effort, with Feldman himself noting the bittersweet diminution of Tjader's popularity in the present era, despite commanding reams of attention from a massive audience while he was alive. All's well that ends well, then: this one comes as both a deluxe LP and CD edition for new-heads and completists alike.

Review: During the 1960s, jazz marimba maestro Cal Tjader performed at Seattle's Penthouse Jazz Club countless times, with many of these performances - made with various quintets and a dizzying array of sidemen, sidewomen and guest performances - being recorded for posterity. This superb double-disc set showcases these atmospheric, often lively recordings for the first time. Tjader is naturally the star throughout, dizzying the audience with mazy and mind-blowing Marimba solos, but at various points he steps back and lets his musical collaborators share the spotlight.
