Review: Astrel K are a band formed by Rhys Edwards of Ulrika Spacek. They're actually based in Stockholm rather than the UK, and it might be our imagination but it feels like you can hear that Scandivanian chill around the edges of their breezy, indie-psych sound on this, their debut album. Flickering i is led by single 'Is It It Or Is It I?', which showcases the accomplished, multi-timbral nature of their sound. They glide between romantic orchestration, jangly guitar and more textural, atmospheric touches for a sound very much not of this earth, albeit rooted in refined songwriting.

Review: For a generation who grew up in the '90s, the work of Tim Gane in Stereolab was often as much of an introduction to krautrock as that sound's actual progenitors. Yet this was only one string to his bow, with the band also traversing genre as effortlessly with abstract electronica as with tropicalia or French chanson. Gane now dwells in Berlin, and Cavern Of Anti-Matter marks his first bona side band project since Stereolab's breakup, enlisting the help of guest luminaries like Sonic Boom and Deerhunter's Bradford Cox for a vivid selection of delirious forays into the unknown that touch on sci-fi, techno and retro electronic tropes yet can't help but bear all the hallmarks of Gane's finest and most restless work.

Review: Cavern Of Anti Matter, the creation of Stereolab co-founder Tim Gane, return with third full-length 'Hormone Lemonade'. Recorded straight to tape over three hour-long sessions, there's a palpable immediacy and urgency driven by motorik rhythms and broad modular synthesis. Sixteen-minute long opening track 'Malfunction' undulates through passages of sci-fi krautrock and nu-disco with dexterity. There seems to be a kind of theme & variation aspect to the album, with elements echoing throughout, such as the rising chord patterns on the pseudo-Drexciyan tech of 'Feed Me Magnetic Rain'. Stereolab comparisons are at moments difficult not to make, especially on tracks like 'Phase Modulation Shuffle' and 'Outerzone Jazs', but the sonics of 'Hormone Lemonade' are unique enough to distance Gane's new project and place it in a category of its own.

Review: Ghost Power is a project from Jeremy Novak of Dymaxion fame and Timothy Gane, also spotted in McCarthy, Stereolab and Cavern Of Anti-Matter. The sound they're whipping up on this debut LP speaks to Library Music freakery with a distinctly 70s twist. It's plenty funky where it counts, cheeky to a fault, and it's embellished with all kinds of wild synth tweaking. Just take a listen to lead track 'Asteroid Witch' and you'll know everything you need to about this brand new, cosmically-charged project with an old soul.

Review: Before Oasis reformed, Noel and Liam were operating on two very different realms. Liam insisting that the wheel isn't broken so doesn't need to be changed, while Noel was all for changing the wheel and experimenting in the studio. He famously wound up the Oasis fanbase over the fact he had a scissors player in the High Flying Birds. Now, we're treated to said scissor player's brilliant solo album and Noel is a featured artist on the song 'Two-Love' - he plays bass and piano. It's a brilliant piece of baroque art pop that's playful and eccentric. Fully deserving of being signed to the esteemed Stereolab's Duophonic label, Le Volume Courbe, aka Charlotte Marionneau, is a sheer delight. Let's just hope there's more music to come soon as the album before this was in 2015.

Review: Modern Cosmology is a collaboration between Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier and Brazilian psych group Mombojo. Together it hears them produce an ultra-organic psych rock dream, six tracks of lumbering twangy wonder. Evidently drawing on the janky movement of plants found in nature, the albums moves at a similar pace, with Sadier's flat vocals and Beefheart-esque proto-cacophonies evoking something that is equal parts slapdash as it is lively. The given name for this, as coined by MC, is 'empty-sounding music'; but we think it's hardly the case, as it sounds to us more like fussy vines in a sonic greenhouse, curling around every available post and wall to grow, but still managing to look beautiful.

Review: Eight years is a long time to leave it between albums. In 2016, Strereolab's Laetitia Sadier gifted us the stunning 'Find Me Finding You', and we've been waiting for the follow up ever since. A veteran of the industry, whose career now spans three decades, she was never going to offer up anything but the good on this much-anticipated return, and Rooting For Love is more than worth the waiting time. First up, the orchestration and arrangements here are gorgeous, nodding to strange pop, operatic soft rock, curious funk and other, more difficult to define machinations. Then there's the themes and lyrics, which touch on everyone and everything from the collapse of our institutions to personal wounds of the past, healing and growth. The overall message: seek inner enlightenment to safeguard the world from what may lie ahead.

Review: On Rooting For Love, Laetitia Sadier issues a call to the traumatized civilizations of Earth: we're urged to finally evolve past our countless millennia of suffering and alienation. Her songs score the complexities and harmonies within this directive: organ, guitar, bass, synth, trombone, vibraphone, live and programmed drums, and a vocal assembly of men and women billed as The Choir, working intricate chord/tempo/and dynamic changes, as Laetitia's empathic presence leads the way. Spelling out a new sonic radicalism for a generation of listeners who'll need it, if they're to want to keep their ability to listen to music at all, hers is a moving Euro-indie utopian dream.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged/torn but otherwise in excellent condition***

Stereolab continue to trawl through their vast back catalogue on the fourth instalment of the Switched On compilation series. This edition, titled Electronically Processed, focuses primarily on rare and hard-to-find tracks (many tucked away on very limited seven-inch singles), with a handful of alternative versions, outtakes and previously unreleased cuts thrown in. Fans will find much to savour across the two-disc set, from Krautrock-tinged Chanson songs (see the rather fine 'Household Names' and Serge Gainsbourg-with-added-funk vibes of 'The Super It'), to more experimental instrumentals from soundtracks, and even the odd dancefloor-ready stomper ('Dimension M2'). In a word: essential.

Review: This is the album that marked a departure from a more guitar-y, orthodox approach of using drone style repetition to conjure a transcendental atmosphere. Instead, they embraced interconnecting and looping riffs, which was a creative lease of life for the band at the time. Co-founder Tim Gane has been open about his creative struggle before until they embraced this way of creating, which is more associated with hip-hop and electronica than motorik rock. The shift was a successful one with this album one of theirs one of the most celebrated in their decorated oeuvre. Opening cut 'Metronomic Underground' is up there as a highlight: melodies and ideas flow in and around each other in a dense yet hypnotic fashion. And the title-track has a magnetic groove as it invites you in and furnishes you with psychedelic sonic patterns, as chanteuse Laetitia Sadier's eerie yet beautiful vocals lure you in even further. Stereolab's music is like magic dust and this album is as strong a proof as any that they have that je nes se pais.

Review: Their sixth album and most commercially successful at the time of release, this is widely considered a masterpiece of beautiful art pop. Argued to be heavily influenced by experimental film, the title of the album is said to have come from two films by the pioneer Norman McClaren. Sonically, they were pushing the boat out there and have audiophile's still obsessing over what they did in the studio for this and applying that to their art. Despite indulging in sonics that seem out-there, there is an aspect of the familiar that makes it engaging and it's why it managed to break the Billboard Charts in the U.S. when it came out. 'Refractions In The Plastic Pulse' is a case in point: It's avant easy-listening, influenced by bossa nova. And 'Rainbow Conversation' is similarly stunning, with a samba shuffle driving things along and conjuring images of sipping caipirinhas on a sandy shore. Who knew Stereolab could be this accessible?

Review: Widely regarded as one of Stereolab's best albums, the deadpan title of their second album conveys, to an extent, what to expect. The track 'Pack Yr Romantic Mind' lives and dies on Tim Gane's noise rock bursts, which provide stunning contrast to Laetitia Sadier dream pop vocals. Gane and Sadier, as a songwriting duo, come from very different styles and ideas but it's the confluence of these that is the beating heart of Stereolab and why they're still revered more than 30 years on from when they released it. Another scorcher here to look out for is 'Jenny Ondioline', where static noise and thick, foggy post-rock ambiance gives way to a motorik beat that's Neu! and Can-level transcendental, as it whisks you into another realm, before coming back to a very present, belligerently shreddy distorted guitar outro. This is a band that pandered to no one's expectations but their own and let raw emotion guide them.
