Review: Surprisingly, long-serving underground rap duo Armand Hammer (AKA ELUCID and Billy Woods) have never recorded an album under the guidance of a single producer. Haram, then, is a unique item in their discography, produced as it is by a lone beat-maker, sometime Mobb Deep, Dilated Peoples and Ghostface Killah collaborator the Alchemist. Musically the album is alternately pin-sharp and drowsy, with sparkling synths, obscure instrumental samples and warming tones riding loose, jazzy and largely laidback hip-hop beats. As you'd expect, ELUCID and Billy Woods are in fine form throughout, spitting rhymes that their label accurate describes as a mixture of "the profane and the pure".

Review: An atmospheric, dreamy and top-notch hip-hop album from Billy Woods here, 'Church', produced entirely by longtime Armand Hammer collaborator Messiah Musik. More or less a ghostly, lonely meditation on subjects such as substance use and tracing one's heritage back to its roots, the songs contained herein are raw, sleek and to-the-point lessons from a most-respected US rapper. Opener 'Paraquat' weaves through multiple noir beatswitches as Woods ruminates on suicide by viologen. Meanwhile, weird beats like 'Swampwater' - on which it proves difficult to discern the track's rhythm thanks to the outer-edges-reaching of Messiah - only help prove Woods' MCing skill.

Review: It's barely a year old but Brooklyn rapper Billy Woods and Los Angeles record producer Kenny Segal's Hiding Places has already assured its place in Hip Hop history. The hugely acclaimed and - until this reissue - hard to find record from these American talents is a quiet gem with deeply pensive lyrics and mellow, lo-fi beats. Mothermary, Elucid, and Self Jupiter all guest and there are painfully honest revelations about fear, doubt and death that make it all the more emotionally involving. There is suffering and outrage aplenty here, but it makes for an album of real depth.

Review: Billy Woods is a real album specialist whose own personal history often tells the tale of world history. The New York rapper works once more with Los Angeles producer Kenny Segal for what is another superb road-trip album that mixes up all the key elements you need in such a record - a good sense of humour and a hint of dread, as well as good eats and better smokes with plenty of lyrical style and great technique. Maps is a concept album of sorts with the pair acting as road warriors well-versed in the horrors and wonders of the world. It is taught and thrilling with next level storytelling.

Review: Doseone teams up with New York prodder Steel Tipped Dove for a sharp-edged, forward-charging record, playing talents of both back at full voltage. After not quite finishing another ShrapKnel record, Doseone felt a creative jolt in the other direction, after which knife-tip moment he would reach out to fellow artists Dove and Fatboi Sharif. Such redirections often cause the creative process to loosen, and here was no exception, with APNC going from a stagnant entanglement to blistering rollout. Within weeks of receiving the first beat pack in late 2023, dose had recorded five tracks; and by Spring, the end was in sight. Though not typically down for guest spots, Dose called on a tight circle of kindred spirits - Open Mike Eagle, M.Sayyid, Billy Woods, Fatboi Sharif, Myka 9, and Andrew Broder on turntables - whom all lend the project extra scratchy, verbal dimensionalities. The result is a taut, unsentimental record that marries Dove's vivid, shape-shifting production with Doseone's most surgically precise writing in years.

Review: Chaz Hall is Lucid, a pretty prolific solo MC as well as a member of groups like Armand Hammer, Nostrum Grocers, Cult Favorite, Lessondary and Small Bills. His I Told Bessie album landed back in 2022 and picked up critical praise from all quarters. The record is a tribute to his grandmother's memory that comes imbued with plenty of his own personality and exudes that textbook dark and murky mood. There are plenty of abstract, unconventional tracks here that brood in rhythmic minimalism as well as a rather chaotic lyrical style that rather keeps you guessing. Frankly, that makes it all the more of an alluring and wondrous treasure.
