Review: His twelfth album in as many years, G-funk enthusiast XL Middleton should be known to all boogie devotees. Opening with two synth-charmed instrumental jams, things get real as the Chromeoisms of "High On Your Love" start nagging at your singalong psyche and the Zapp & Rodgers-style robo-erotica of "Exception To The Rule" kick in midway. By the time you've jittered and spluttered to the crazed slap-bass of "I'm Ready" and swooned to the retro R&B delights of "You Know It's True" you'll be ready to rewind and press play all over again. Review: It's no exaggeration to say that XL Middleton is one of the world's greatest purveyors of revivalist G-funk, P-funk, synth-funk and boogie. While he's been serving up rock solid sets since the dawn of the Millennium, it's taken record buyers a little while to catch up. "2 Minutes Till Midnight", his latest full-length effort, may well be his strongest outing yet. With a combination of laidback raps, soulful vocal snippets, colourful synthesizer lines and head nodding drum machine beats featuring prominently throughout, many will draw parallels with the likes of Slick Rick, Warren G, the Dogg Pound and the man credited with popularizing the style, Dr Dre.

Review: If you think you know a cooler cat and more brilliant boogie producer than XL Middleton right now then you're lying. His Tap Water very much set that reparation in motion when it arrived back in 2016 right when modern funk was making a comeback thank to Dam Funk et al. It's a hard to find original that still stands up and now it has been followed up by a second volume of brilliantly squelch analogue funk, dazzling boogie baselines, lush sci-fi chords and retro future fills, vocals and hooks.
