Kairo Bancou Moulu
Cat: FNGR 006/AJX 638S. Rel: 31 Mar 22
Kairo Bancou Moulu (4:43)
The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

Blacker (4:17)
Cubafro Con Amigos (4:17)
Review: A reissue of two historic, important cuts by The Ballistic Brothers. 'Blacker' and 'Cufabro Con Amigos' helped define the transitional crossover between early 90s funk and breaksy electronica in the UK. The Ballistic Brothers were the sonic thesis, antithesis and synthesis of Ashley Beedle and David Hill, both of whom later went on to work behind the scenes in the music industry, but whose earlier contributions are still duly noted. 'Blacker' appeared on their earliest album, The Balistic Brothers vs. The Eccentric Afros Volume 1, and was symptomatic of the sonic stirrings of breakbeat, acid jazz and broken beat at the time, channelling a string-laden suspense, and a wise, sampled vocal snippet from Gil Scott Heron. Heron's wisdom undercuts the track, and hears his musings on race and moral superiority.

Mercy Mercy Baby

Mercy Mercy Baby (2:45)
Mercy Mercy Baby (instrumental) (3:02)
Review: Puerto Rican music legend Ray Barretto has a seriously impressive biography, including spells with the Tito Puente Orchestra and the acclaimed Fania All Stars. This tasty seven-inch single serves up one of Barretto's best boogaloo-era cuts, 1968 single and Acid album track "Mercy, Mercy Baby". It remains a fine song, wrapping a jaunty salsa rhythm in various boogaloo aural hallmarks, including impassioned vocals, funk-influenced horns and an incessant piano riff. Interestingly, this edition doesn't feature the original single B-side, but rather a previously unissued instrumental version. Shorn of the vocals and pop production, it feels breezier and heavier, with additional trumpet solos that will wind their way into your subconscious.

Top Brass

Top Brass (3:36)
Top Brass (Bare Essentials mix) (3:41)
Review: Composer Matt Berry aims to mimic the classic iconic Library Music label KPM with this new outing on Acid Jazz. It is the first in a series of such releases and it does a fine job of following in the label's tradition of providing the musical bedrock for classic British TV series and international movies. KPM used composers such as Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield and Berry proves he is right up there with this 7". 'Top Brass' is a funky instrumental with dramatic strings that add a sense of tension to the rude boy swagger of the rhythm. On the flip is a more stripped-back 'Bare Essentials mix' which is just as good and a little more menacing.

Beatmaker (3:00)
Beatmaker (instrumental) (3:09)
Review: Actor, producer and musician Matt Berry teams up instrumentally with vocalist Emma Noble on this alt-funky, psychic single jam, which comes to limited 7" wax. Lyrically, 'Beatmaker' is a rags-to-riches tale of the son of a tailor-maker who makes it big - "they know that you're the gravy-maker". Gradually, though, our protagonist's penchant for financial conquest and accruing assets begins to bite him in the foot. Ironically, that's not something you'll learn so readily after you inevitably cop the wax!

No More Me Me Me (3:57)
Hypnotoad (2:34)
Review: Some 30 years since their debut album, the British jazz quartet Corduroy are still going strong with their incredible organ jazz and vocal stylings on a new 7" 'No More Me Me Me / Hypnotoad'. 'No More Me Me Me' is a zany vocal time capsule, with a tongue-in-cheek style that brings to mind Blur's 'Park Life' or literally any B-52s song. Alternatively on the B-side is something much more in Corduroy's playing ground, a sensational instrumental jazz number with an organ focus. This is another incredible 45 to add to any jazz collection.

Um Brilho Novo (2:59)
Rua Nova Barao (2:48)
Review: Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier has decided to launch a new series of seven-inch singles on his Acid Jazz Records offshoot, Fingier Records. Known as World Got Soul, the series begins via FIngier's first collaborations with Brazilian jazz singer Josi Dias. She's in fine form on A-side 'Um Brilho Novo', a superb slab of jazz-tinged Brazilian soul rich in energetic funk breaks, mazy vibraphone and flute solos, heavy bass and razor-sharp guitar licks. Even more energetic and dancefloor-ready is flipside 'Rua Nova Barao', a fine fusion of South American dancefloor jazz, funk breaks and sweaty samba rhythms. Like the A-side, it sounds like a guaranteed floor-filler.

Family Tree (Disco mix) (4:37)
Family Tree (2:53)
Review: Working with its sister label OST Recordings, Acid Jazz releases a new version of 'Family Tree' by Family Tree, on a smart-looking label based on the look of the original's Ananda label. For the first time since 1975, this new reissue comes with the Kevin Beamish Disco version and a shorter disco mix, as was initially compiled. Handcrafted by 'I Specialize In Love' hitmaker Sharon Brown and her group Family Tree, this eponymous disco-funk sheller is an unpolished study of musicianship above overproduction; the drums are dynamic and dry, lending ample space to Sharon's nostalgic familial reminiscences.

Girlfriend (instrumental)
Review: A six-headed funk/jazz group, The Filthy Six pluck one of the highlights of their second album The Fox for this here single for the venerable Acid Jazz label. A cover of Michael Jackson's "Girlfriend" would be hard to get wrong, but the crew make the song their own with a mix of Hammond organ, brass, Dap Tones drums and some raw and deliciously soulful vocals. Much needed 7" bad boy here!

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
Cat: AJX 400S. Rel: 22 Jan 16
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (feat Brendan Reilly - radio edit) (4:55)
Iguana Strut (5:05)
Review: Any self-respecting funk dancefloor will always react to a good Michael Jackson cover version, that's why there have been so many over the years. Adding to this canon of Jacko cover versions are London jazz funk troupe The Filthy Six who bring their take on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" to this 7" shaped return to Acid Jazz. Long term fixtures of the label, this seven is in fact a prelude to the upcoming third album from The Filthy Six, due on Acid Jazz later this year, and their dashing live funk take on one of MJ's finest cuts will probably remain a dancefloor favourite long after. DJs don't sleep on the taut instrumental cut "iguana Strut" that lines the flip - it's just as good.

I Love Without A Love
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Jo Ann Hamilton hailed from Georgia and was brought up on a diet of soul, Motown and r&b. At the tender age of seven she joined the Gospel Choir from the Melton Chappel church and then got into the disco scene. Five decades later she has linked with Kevin Fingier in Buenos Aires, Argentina for this fantastic new 7" that is imbued with classic funk, soul and swing. Opener 'September' is a massive Northern Soul gem that would have slayed back then and still does now. On the flip is the more obscure 'I love Without A Love' which is funky, tropical and infectious.

Beads, Things & Flowers (instrumental)
Beads, Things & Flowers (vocal)
Review: 'Beads, Things And Flowers' originally dropped in 1993 as part of the newfangled acid jazz continuum at the time. Recalling the dub-rap stylings of trip-hoppers like Massive Attack and the sampledelic confluence of jazz and electronica, this track certainly presents an interesting fusion. Newly reissued on 7", the dark power of the tracks' vocal line is fleshed out by its contrast to the B-side, which for all intents could have originated from a completely different context, and we wouldn't have batted an eye. An unusual cut spanning two starkly different emotions.

Get The Music Now (short version) (4:24)
Africa (short version) (3:42)
Review: Ipa-Boogie's self titled album is a super rare one that is super expensive even if you do manage to find a copy. Thankfully, for the first time ever on 7" vinyl, Acid Jazz kindly serve up short versions of 'Get The Music Now' and 'Africa', which both come from said full length. These are some of the only recordings known from this obscure band, and they first came in 1978 but still sound ahead of their time. This release, it is also worth noting, kicks off a new 45 series from Acid Jazz entitled Albarika 45, which will focus on many rare singles and unknown versions throughout the forthcoming year.

The Great Akerman (instrumental) (2:50)
Review: Fingier Records is a new Acid Jazz sub-label that is back with a brand new 7" from The Kevin Fingier Collective. It's a real dance floor heater that is perfectly aged and authentic as it mixes up Northern Soul and r&b with driving guitar rhythms and steamy piano chords. The horns are killer but the vocal is the icing on the cake. On the flip things get Latin flavoured with the bossa-tinged mod jazz of 'The Great Akerman' which is defined by lush flute and organ vamps. This is a great taster of the full length to come from The Kevin Fingier Collective.

Review: The always outstanding Acid Jazz welcome back Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier with his fantastic collective. They secured a huge hit with the rifts single 'Don't Wanna Cry No More' and this follow up is another must-have instrumental double sider. Opening up is 'Latin Dynamite', an explosive cut with plenty of mid 60's fusion vibes and a perfect mix of mod jazz and boogaloo. Flip it over and you'll find the more obscure but groovy 'El Basement', a big R&B dancer with a killer flute solo, some big horn leads and slapping hits, all tope doff with a screaming Hammond organ. Review: Following an overwhelming response to its release as an advance single for the Kevin Fingier Collective album 'Not Strictly Soul,' 'Only For Me (feat. Jo Ann Hamilton)' now arrives as a 7" single on Fingier Records. This release is strictly limited to 500 copies and marks Jo Ann Hamilton's third collaboration with The Kevin Fingier Collective. Review: The legendary Afro funk fusionists Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou Dahomey have got unlimited amounts of big tunes in their back catalogue and the fiery 'It's A Vanity' is one of them. It has fat and chunky drums with trademark horns leading the way next to the impassioned vocals. Review: Benin funk supergroup Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou have an essential discography that takes in some of the most definitive afro-funk sounds you can hear. The Acid Jazz label serves up a couple of such betters here with 'Kpede Do Gbe Houenou' layering up the driving grooves, killer horns and wild keys into something intoxicating. Less intense but just as good, 'Ma Wa Mon Nou Mi O' brings the guitar work to the fore, with plucked and funky riffs underneath the imploring vocal work that's up top. Both tunes have been restored and remastered.

Review: Acid Jazz Records' has got a licensing agreement with legendary Benin label Albarika Store that is seeing them put out some of the best music to have ever come from West Africa. Benin's almighty Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey made plenty of it. This latest 45 is another stunner with plenty of raw screams, wails and grunts all adding extra life and vitality to the already trilling guitars and bustling drum rhythms. Add in heavy percussion and you have a real heavy Afro psych-funk tune. The flip is more deep and soulful, and just as good for different reasons.

Purple Mountain Majesty (5:20)
Review: The Acid Jazz label opens it archives to turn out this magnificent slice of northern soul from the legend that is Dean Parrish, a man who sold over a million records and worked with the likes of Jimi Hendrix. It's 10 years old but still bangs and is maybe one of the best records of his career. The psychedelic 'It's Time - Purple Mountain Majesty' is a hard hitting tune with layers of percussion, amour nines, bendy guitar riffs and soaring vocals that have female backings for extra richness. The version on the flip is more tense, steamy and rousing.

Earthsplosion (3:36)
Review: Maestro Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier returns with a brand new 45 on his Finger Records imprint, this time lifting the curtain on Santa Fiebre, the newly tipped red-hot rhythm & soul outfit from Buenos Aires. Forged in the fire of the Argentinian capital comes this rip-roaring band, debuting a rootsy, double-clapping, firebrand form of Latin soul. Fingier's in-house production backs up the band's taseringly tasty performances, as 'That's Where We Go' is heard to riff highly on brasses and bombast, and 'Earthsplosion' predicts a future detonation beneath our shared subterranean mantle, producing a bubble-bursting, Hammong-hummingl, bongo-banging funk stank of cosmic proportions.

Ward is an American singer who came up singing gospel in church, which is not a surprise when you hear her raw and visceral delivery here. This new compendium, 'Firebird', charts the DJ and producer's latest sonic explorations, blurring the boundaries between every influence from contemporary jazz, UK electronic dance, and Latin dance styles from bossa nova to salsa. It also contains several examples of what is known as his 'East Coast' sound, which pays homage to the fusion of jazz and funk and which spread throughout UK nightclubs as far back as the early 80s.

Review: Chris Bangs is a legendary figure within the UK jazz-dance scene whose extensive CV includes coining the term 'Acid Jazz'. While he's always been more of a DJ than a producer, his occasional musical outings are always on-point. 'Firebird' is his first solo album since 2008, though it was naturally created with the help of an impressive cast-list of experienced musicians. It was intended to be a collection of dancefloor-friendly tracks that explore his major musical influences - Latin jazz, jazz-funk, Brit-funk, jazz-fusion and so on - and in that regard he's hit the brief. The set's many highlights include the sun-splashed Brazilian heat of 'Samba Do Sueno', the up-tempo, extra-percussive heat of 'Firebird' and a brilliant Batacuda style cover of 'Kitchen (Cosina)' by Dom Un Romao.

Review: The jazz and broken beat revival continues apace as we race through 2019, so original pioneers of the sound are rightly coming back into focus. Enter the Brand New Heavies, one of the key acts of the mid-eighties who sound as good on this brand new album as ever. It's littered with funk-licked pop, crystalline acid jazz and singalong songs that range from tender ballads to soaring soul. Angie Stone, Beverley Knight and other vocalists lend their tones along the way, but importantly TBNH is not a revival or self-satisfied celebration. Instead, it feels like a forward-looking and accomplished album that takes the band in subtle new directions.

Review: British soul singer Dee C Lee started her career singing backup for Wham and the Style Council, before embarking on a solo career that included an early release on Mo Wax. By the late 90s, she'd pretty much stepped back from music though - making this new album for Acid Jazz a genuine surprise (it's her first new release for over a quarter of a century). It's rather good, too, with Lee's sublime and emotion-rich vocals soaring above 'heritage soul' style tracks that variously offer nods to bossa-nova ('Don't Forget About Love'), disco/jazz-funk fusion ('Be There In The Morning', with its excellent horns and fluttering flutes), and Motown-style stompers (the uplifting excellence of 'Walk Away').

Review: Dee C Lee has been singing and performing for over 40 years now, perhaps most famously with Paul Weller's Style Council although teaming up with Guru on his Jazzmatazz. This amazing soul singer has now released her most recent album Just Something which his her fourth album overall and her first since 1998. The tracks that are getting wide play and buzz include the beautiful and soulful single 'Walk Away'. Also, last year's double sided single with the positive and wonderful 'Don't Forget About Love' along with the more funky 'Be There In The Morning'. Each song is strong in their own right. Kudos to the Acid Jazz label for releasing this on vinyl for us to enjoy.

Review: This long-lost 1973 album from Graham Dee is a fabled record from the man who was a key figure in the 60s London session scene and later a prolific songwriter and producer, and it is now released on vinyl for the first time. Dee was a renowned session guitarist who played with legends like Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck as well as artists such as John Lee Hooker and The Walker Brothers. After working with them, he became an in-house producer for Atlantic Records and honed a distinctive 'British Soul sound.' In the 70s, he moved to the U.S., writing songs and working at the legendary Muscle Shoals. Mr. Super Cool was only rediscovered in 2019 and it's clear to hear Dee's unique talent on a record that offers a fascinating glimpse into early 70s recording.

Review: Ferry Djimmy's life sounds hard to believe - a schoolteacher and boxer in the late 50s in Benin, he wound up in Paris as a policeman on missions alongside Jacques Chirac, and it was there he recorded his first two singles. They didn't quite make a splash but when he returned to Benin he caught on with the country's authorities and was given a budget to start a label to inspire the youth towards the Marxist-Leninism direction the ruling party had taken. Taking his cues from Fela Kuti, he recorded most of the music himself and now the sound of Revolution Records represents Afrobeat at its most vital, just outside the established lore of the Nigerian hub. Djimmy's heavy brand of funk comes to life on this dedicated collection on Acid Jazz, with 16 tracks which rank as the most authoritative overview of his work to date.

Review: Ferry Djimmy is quite the character - he is a mysterious Afrobeat figure who also was a former schoolteacher, boxer, Jacques Chirac's bodyguard, and well as being a legendary Beninese musical visionary. He recorded this album sometime in the mid-1970s in support of the revolutionary leader of Benin at the time - Mathieu Kerekou. A fire is reported to have turned all but 200 copies to dust so it is mega rare and expensive to get an original. Acid Jazz reissues it here in all its fiery, lo-fi, gnarly Afrobeat glory. This is a fully licensed project with all new and in-depth sleeve notes by Florent Mazzoleni.

Review: Forget the Hateful Eight, cos The Filthy Six are back in town with a new album! More Filth is the jazz sextet's third album, arriving via regular home Acid Jazz, and features their Michael Jackson cover "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin" which has already been burning up dancefloors. The rest of the album is geared towards the dance too, taking influence from Staxx as much as it does Blue Note or Prestige. Ray Charles was the inspiration for "Watch What You're Doing To Me", whilst the remainder is filled with what we've come to expect from Nick Etwell, Dan Drury, Mark Brown, Nick Nigel Price, Pete Whittaker and Simon Lea. A rock-solid rhythm section, smooth organ lines, tight brass and taut guitar.

Having already reissued a number of key releases, the long-running London label has now put together this retrospective of his solo work. It contains material from albums and singles recorded between 1972 and '84, plus a couple of cuts that were previously unissued before they appeared on wax earlier this year (most notably the brilliant "Positive Forces"). Naturally, there are plenty of must-haves present, including classics such as "Cool Out", "Lover's Holiday", "So In Love With You" and "Closer To The Source", making it a near perfect introduction to Hutson's sensual musical world.

Review: If you've had your ear to the ground in the field of contemporary jazz, you might have picked up on Fingier Records, the label headed up by Argentine producer Kevin Fingier. More than a label, it's served as an artistic statement populated with killer 7"s informed by classic soul, funk, jazz and samba, and now Acid Jazz are doing the honourable thing and gathering together these rare gems and presenting them as a cohesive compilation. Guest spots from Diane Ward, Jo-Ann Hamilton and Gerri Granger, Brazilian singer Jose Dias and Senegalese vocalist and percussionist Abdoulaye Badiane are all backed up by Fingier's band, and the results sound even more powerful when taken in one full hit.

Review: Acid Jazz Records are master compilers who here turn their focus once more to Les Sympathics De Porto Novo Benin. It's part of the label's reissues series focussing on rare sounds from legendary Benin imprint Albarika Store and is a second album from one of the most notable groups to hail from Porto Novo'. This 1970s collective, founded by Herman Laleye, is famed for its heavy rhythm section and vocals from Gangbo Bonheur, Armand Pognon playing blues-tinged guitar and Camille Zanou's on the organ. Rather than straight-up Afro-beat, Afro-funk or Latin, this band fused it all seamlessly into something new.

Review: British four-piece Mother Earth were hugely active during the heyday of the acid jazz and Brit funk scene of the 90s. They might not be as well known as peers like Incognito but that will always do them a disservice as they penned plenty of great tunes. You Have Been Watching is one of them, and Stoned Woman, reissued here, is another. It was recorded in a studio in a Tottenham industrial estate studio and brings all new colour and character to the tried and tested formula of the time - rock licks and funky drums sit next to a proud reference to Blaxploitation soundtracks from the 70s.

Review: During the early 1990s, British four-piece Mother Earth was one of the most active bands on the acid jazz scene. While they never had the runaway success of, say, Incognito or Galliano, they produced a string of quietly impressive albums. You Have Been Watching first appeared 22 years ago in 1995 and remains notable for its heady mix of psychedelic rock, Hammond funk, soul and jazz-rock influences. While much of the acid jazz music from that period hasn't dated well, Mother Earth's songs still resonate all the years on - a reflection, perhaps, of the weighty subjects and themes often covered in their politically aware lyrics.

Review: Acid Jazz's announcement of the 30th anniversary 2LP remastered edition of Mother Earth's The People Tree is a momentous occasion for fans of acid jazz and soul music alike. Originally released in 1994, this album holds a significant place in the genre's history, blending elements of soul, funk, and folk-tinged rock from the 70s with a modern twist. The special edition reissue boasts the original album, along with three previously unreleased tracks and six making their vinyl debut. Remastered from the original analogue recordings, this release promises to breathe new life into the beloved classic. Featuring guest appearances from iconic artists like Paul Weller, Dee C Lee and Simon Bartholomew of Brand New Heavies, The People Tree is a testament to the collaborative spirit of the acid jazz scene. Notable bonus tracks include the previously unreleased alternative version of 'Apple Green,' an alternate take on 'Illusions,' and the title track itself. First-time vinyl cuts offer fresh perspectives on tracks like 'Jesse' and 'Slide Sweet Baby,' adding depth to the listening experience. The album's presentation is equally impressive, with a beautiful 'wide-spine' layout, printed inner sleeves, and insightful notes from label-founder Eddie Piller, accompanied by unseen photos from the original cover shoot. Overall, this anniversary edition of The People Tree is a album worth your time as it often selected for one of the best examples in the genre.

Their only album and surviving high-quality recording is 'Ogassa Original', released on the enigmatic record label Albarika Store, whose archives are still being scoured by the modern label Acid Jazz for the purpose of reissing their best and most obscure pressings. Recorded at EMI in Lagos, the four songs heard on this LP, from 'Avale' to 'Gbe We Gnin Wa Bo', feature an ensemble of voices and performances, each full of gratitude for continent of Africa, familial rites, and matters of the spiritual.

Review: Acid Jazz Records' ongoing licensing agreement with legendary Benin label Albarika Store turns out another treasure here. This one shines a light on traditional voodoo ceremonial music from Orchestre Poly Rythmo De Cotonou Dahomey. It was rebased in 1974 as one of Albarika's earliest offerings and finds the band playing on a large ceremonial Sato drum, which is played with wooden stick beaters and reserved only for special ceremonial occasions. Full of traditional rhythms and ritualistic grooves, it's a deeply spiritual funk sound that cannot help but connect on a deep level.
