In a modular synthesiser, it is easy to create complex results via complex means - patching an elaborate network of independent control signals, for example. This can be very powerful but also cumbersome to set up, and potentially difficult to control in a meaningful way. MultiMod represents a new approach: it takes a single control signal and copies it 8 times, not unlike a simple mult, except that it allows you to modify those copies by weighted adjustment of their relative phase and speed. The result is modulation that is related to the source, but not identical at each destination.

Phase sets the spacing of the signal copies in time, weighted by channel, with each progressive channel getting more out of phase from the original signal and from each other. Spread allows for varispeeding the copies by different amounts, with each getting progressively faster or slower than the original Signal. Time determines the range of time captured at the input and therefore also the depth of modulation across copies of the input signal when Phase and Spread are manipulated. MultiMod also includes Tempo, Hold, and Reset features, and a variety of Read Shapes for temporal rearrangement of input signals.

When the input is not patched, MultiMod generates an LFO that is copied eight times and manipulated in the same ways.

MultiMod is built with the latest DSP hardware which offers eight high resolution outputs, with signal input and output ranges approaching the upper limits of the analogue eurorack modular system. All I/O is capable of a 20V range at +/-10V, greatly exceeding the typical 0-5V CV input ranges on typical digital modules.

Notes: Another iconic Buchla module gets the Eurorack reissue treatment courtesy of TipTop. The 242t is the brand's unique voltage-controlled clock and trigger module, generating pulses based on a 4x12 matrix.

The Buchla and Tiptop Audio 242t Programmable Pulser is a reissue of the time-event-based generator from the 1970s 200 series. At its center is the Pulser, a voltage-controlled clock oscillator with a wide frequency range, extending up to audio frequencies, numerous outputs, and start/stop controls. The Pulser drives a programmable matrix with three rows of up to 12 stages: (A), (B), and (C). Stages are activated using the X/Y coordinate controls, and the total number of stages can be set using the (n) row. Clock and Reset inputs allow the 242t to sync with other devices, while the Reset input can also be used to control the number of stages with external pulses.

Notes: Tiptop's reissues of iconic Buchla modules continue with the 285 frequency shifter. Edgy, twangy harmonic modulation with ring mod options and stereo operation via sum and difference outputs.

Notes: The MCO MK II is a highly versatile digital VCO and voice module inspired by 90s/00s digital synths shrunk into just 6HP.

It offers a broad collection of unique, high-quality synth voices, each with extensive, customizable parameters. These parameters can be directly controlled or modulated through assignable internal and external sources. Certain per-voice parameters support audio-rate modulation, including FM, sync, and DSP. Xaoc Devices Samarkanda is a digital quad delay module with extensive patching capabilities and a lot of flexibility for signal mangling. It can be used as four entirely independent delays, a dual stereo delay, a complex/multi-tap or multi-channel delay, a quad/polyphonic resonator, dual chorus, dual flanger, reverb, looper (with sound on sound!), and granulator, or any combination of those. You can reverse the delayed signal, hold it, squeeze and stretch it beyond all recognition and still go back to the original piece of audio captured in the buffer! The internal lossless normalization (the signal doesn't leave the digital domain) combined with top-notch components (including 24-bit AKM converters and 32-bit internal processing) are responsible for high sound quality. Samarkanda has been conceived in the truly modular spirit. Not only can you control almost all its features remotely with CV/gates, but the external feedback path gives you the opportunity to process the delayed signal with other modules.

Samarkanda offers a wide range of delay times beginning at a mere 0.5ms and reaching up to 15 seconds per channel. That means that, by stacking its four channels, you can achieve up to one minute delay! There are two operating modes switchable individually for each channel. Analogue delivers pitch changes that resemble classic analogue tape and BBD delays. When you combine it with the looping Hold function, you can play Samarkanda with any 1V/octave CV source. By using the Sync function you can even loop single wave cycles. The Digital mode gives you a granular buffer-scrubbing effect (no pitch change) across the whole delay time range. You can seamlessly switch back and forth between modes without losing any information. You can use Samarkanda for multiple tasks at the same time - from four independent delay lines through any combination of channels processing the same signal up to a quad behemoth. You can also use the linking feature for ease of operation (the first channel in the chain acts as the main control source for the others).

As most settings operate on a per-channel basis, you can freely combine different features (such as analog/digital behaviour, delay time range, reverse and hold functions, etc.) in a configuration of your choosing. You can synchronize each of its channels separately to a different source, either via the Sync input, or by using the tap-tempo functionality (with multiplication and division galore). Should you ever get lost, the Purge button comes in handy when/if things start to spiral out of control!

Notes: The brilliant Perkons drum machine comes to Eurorack. A single hybrid drum voice with digital sound engine and analogue filter/overdrive, the Perkons Voice is flexible and supremely powerful.

Erica Synths Perkons Voice is a eurorack incarnation of the percussion voices from the PERKONS HD-01 Drum machine. Like on the drum machine, the module has hybrid architecture, featuring a digital sound engine followed by an analogue multimode filter and overdrive. Users can select among 13 sound generation algorithms and save up to 99 presets that can be recalled easily. Tune and Patch CV inputs are configurable for various CV settings and are tuned to 1V/oct. The Bruxa music synthesiser module is an audio alchemical experiment. Spill your sound into time, and let it decay through the filters to hear the results.

Bruxa is a collaboration between Make Noise and Alessandro Cortini. Inspired by Cortini's music and sonic experimentations, Bruxa embodies the seen and unseen, the sign and magic, the alchemy of sound. It is a new evolution of Tony and Alessandro's original prototype circuits which eventually became the Strega's Time/Filter Experiment. It is a multi-tap delay line with over a dozen unique feedback paths and multiple filters within those feedback paths aligned to allow for accumulation of noise, saturation and signal degradation.

While Strega is a complete synthesiser in a tabletop form factor, Bruxa is a Eurorack module designed to be used as one part of a Eurorack modular synthesiser. You will discover a number of differences in layout, signals, and sound. Living inside the Eurorack modular system, Bruxa encourages you to patch your own sound and modulation sources, yielding results surprisingly distinct from Strega.

The 259t is the largest and most complex analogue oscillator from Don Buchla's legendary 200 modular synthesiser. The 259 originated the concept of the "Complex Oscillator" in the 1970s and has been reissued by Buchla and Tiptop Audio in Eurorack format. The module consists of two oscillators, called the Modulator and Principal, with a middle section that provides voltage control over the internal modulation paths between the two oscillators, resulting in highly complex timbres. Additionally, the principal oscillator passes through multiple unique voltage-controlled waveshapers and crossfaders for further signal processing. Simply plug a universal power supply (laptop style) into either of the barrel plugs on the 4HP panel. Connect your modules via flying bus cables or the Bus Stick. For custom power systems, the Row Power 45 has a set of easily soldered holes for using large gauge wire or MTA156 connectors to connect to distribution bus boards.

Multiple Row Power modules can be powered from a single power brick by daisy-chaining with an inexpensive barrel cable. The Row Power 45 can also be daisy-chained to 4ms Company's Pod enclosures. Each power supply is independently regulated and protected for ultra-low cross-talk between rows/pods.

The Row Power 45 is compatible with the 4ms Row Power Shield. This device (sold separately) attaches to the back of the Row Power 45 and monitors the amount of current being drawn, as well as the voltages of the power rails. The information is sent over Bluetooth to be displayed on a phone or tablet.

Notes: A rock-solid all-rounder of a VCO, the Cycle 5 is a triangle-core oscillator with morphable wave shapes as well as conventional sine, triangle, saw and pulse outputs. Switchable octaves and 5th transposition make the module even more user friendly.

A small Eurorack oscillator that packs a punch: that's the best way to summarise Cycle 5.

At its heart lies a refined high-stability triangle core voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), with performance matching or exceeding that of much bigger and costly oscillator modules.

Instead of a coarse frequency knob, a 7-position octave switch is provided. This in combination with a perfect fifth transposition switch and factory pitch tuning, makes Cycle 5 an exceptionally straightforward and musical VCO to use: simply centre the fine tune knob, and the module will be instantly tuned to reference C.

Meanwhile, its dual precision volt per octave inputs add a great deal of versatility. For example, one could be used for pitch sequencing and the other as a generic exponential FM input, or both sequenced together for transposition effectsithe dual inputs serving as a built-in precision adder.

Sporting all the classic waveforms, ranging from sine wave, triangle, saw and square/saw, as well as a hard sync input and low frequency oscillator (LFO) mode, Cycle 5 makes for a real workhorse VCO. The novel trigonometric waveshaper results in a very clean sine wave, ideal for sub bass duty.

Cycle 5's highlight however, is its vari-wave feature. By adjusting the vari-wave knob, the waveform on the matching output will smoothly morph from sine, to triangle, saw, square and finally a very narrow pulse. The vari-wave parameter can be CV controlled, up to audio frequencies for some intense timbres.

Equally at home as a modest modulation companion to big VCOs, as being in the spotlight in miniature or polyphonic systems, Cycle 5 might just be the most multi-talented tiny analogue oscillator yet.

The Mimeophon music synthesiser module is a stereo, multi-zone colour audio repeater by Make Noise and soundhack, coded by Tom Erbe.

The Mimeophon (from Greek mimeo (repeat/copy) and phon (sound)) is a modern take on various historical sound copying, echo and repeating devices. It allows for Stereo modulations of Time, Space and Timbre of Mono or Stereo sound sources. The Mimeophon is capable of modulating and morphing time scales of repeated sound from micro-sound to note to phrase length while also colouring and spatializing the repeats.

Notes: Part of TipTop's exceptional series of Eurorack-format Buchla modules, the 264t provides four sample-and-hold circuits, plus a logic circuit designed to control polyphonic patches. Deceptively simple but surprisingly creative, like most Buchla modules.

Sample-and-hold's are essentially one-cell analog memories. They are useful for "remembering" the instantaneous value of a control voltage (a detected envelope, for example), for generating equally spaced steps from a constant slope input (as from a 281t envelope generator), and for converting any continuously changing voltage (a random voltage, for instance) into a series of discrete values.

The 264's sample-and-hold circuits have two operating modes: sample and track. In the sample mode, the value of the input is sampled and applied to the output whenever a pulse is received. The output remains at this value until the next pulse arrives. The track mode diers in that an input is applied to the output for the duration of the pulse. The output tracks the input until the end of the pulse and remains at a constant value until the next pulse.

To use the 264t as four independent channels set the separate/common switch to separate. A single CV can be set to all four channels by setting the operate/common to common and plug CV in the the back jack on the with right side.

The Model 264t includes a polyphonic adaptor, which performs the logic necessary to implement four-voice polyphony. Facilities are incorporated for fine tuning and f.m. modulating the oscillators; light emitters display the adaptor's operation.

Notes: Great value from Xaoc's pingable dual VCA, capable of creating organic, acoustic-style decay curves which replicate the dynamics of real-life instruments. Ideal for processing audio as well as CV.

Xaoc Devices Lublin is a high-quality dual VCA module with exponential CV inputs. On top of that, its two identical channels feature additional inputs for pinging. These inputs use an elaborate analogue circuit to model the dynamic behaviour of vactrols, allowing you to trigger a carefully crafted gain response that mimics the natural decay of plucked and struck acoustic instruments. Unlike lowpass gate modules though, Lublin reduces gain while retaining the full frequency bandwidth, so it is perfect for harmonically rich signals, like our Odessa additive VCO. The vactrol-like behaviour is just a starting point as the envelope may be varied within a wide range using a switch (natural, shortened and prolonged response) and a potentiometer, so you are not stuck with one decay characteristic. Therefore, you can use it not only to create bongos, but also for fat compressed kicks! The built-in gain control circuit (saturating CV instead of the audio signal) prevents distortion from excessive amplification. Lublin is DC-coupled, so you can use it to process CV as well as audio signals.

MetaModule Plugins

Already there are over 200 modules in third-party plugins from Bogaudio, Valley, ChowDSP, NANO Modular, and the list is growing. 4ms have an SDK available to make it easy for VCV Rack plugin developers to convert their plugin to a MetaModule plugin. 4ms' licensing terms are non-restrictive: developers are welcome to distribute their plugin in any way they wish, commercially or not.

Mapping Knobs and Jacks

The MetaModule has 12 knobs that can be mapped to virtual knobs. Each knob can be mapped to up eight virtual knobs, and each mapping can have a different range and offset. You also can save a group of mappings as a Knob Set and switch between Knob Sets with the encoder. You also can map the 8 inputs and 8 outputs to virtual module jacks. Also, the MetaModule is a USB MIDI host, so you also can map MIDI CC, note, gate, and other parameters to knobs and jacks.

Expanders

There are lots of ways to customize your MetaModule. A Wifi expander allows you to wirelessly transfer patches from your computer. Add eight more knobs with the Knob expander, or buttons with the Button expander. A CV/Audio expander adds more high-resolution inputs and outputs, and the Gate In/Out expander adds not only gate jacks but also TRS MIDI and I2C.

Under the Hood

There are six CV/Audio inputs, two gate inputs, and six CV/Audio outputs. The CV/Audio jacks are all 24-bit, 48kHz DC-coupled, -10V to +10V. A USB-C jack accepts MIDI devices and thumb drives. Patches and plugins can be loaded via a USB drive or microSD Card, and internal flash memory lets you save patches you always want to come back to.

The processor is more advanced than anything 4ms has used in the past, and is among the most powerful processors found in Eurorack. Startup time and latency are blazingly fast.

The 292t is a reissue of Don Buchla's low-pass gate from the 1970s, adapted for the Eurorack modular format. The module consists of four independent low-pass gates (LPGs) and retains the natural, percussive sounds of the original, all of which can be manipulated in real time using control voltages. The 292t allows you to mix up to four sounds from their individual outputs or through a summed output, functioning as a mixdown. Each channel can operate in one of three modes: a low-pass filter with a variable cutoff, a VCA with controllable gain, or a combination of both, producing Buchla's classic low-pass gate effect.

Notes: AXON-2 is an 8HP expander module for the SQUID SALMPLE, MFX and Pamela's PRO Workout that like the AXON-1 provides 4 additional freely assignable CV inputs but additionally adds manual offset controls and 2 additional 'performance' buttons.

The addition of AXON-2 increases the Squid, MFX or Pam PRO's total number of CV inputs by 4, greatly increasing the possibilities for vast modular manipulation. Xaoc Devices presents Batumi II - a greatly improved and enhanced new iteration of the modern day classic that is/was the original Batumi, preserving its layout and form factor. The premise remains the same: four LFO's with individual outputs for sine, assign and rectangle waves. The channels can operate independently or they can be linked - phase shifted, divided or multiplied (new mode alert) with regard to the first channel. Multiple major and minor improvements have been implemented, e.g. when synced to an external clock source, each channel's frequency slider selects a clock division for that channel's outputs.

Xaoc Devices have managed to incorporate the features of the original expander into Batumi II (sync mode switching and assign waveform selection) without changing the size of the module which opened up new possibilities for the new optional expander. The Poti II expander for Batumi II adds multi destination inputs for sine wavefolding, assign output waveform selection or rectangle pulse modulation with the destination set for each channel independently. Poti II also features frequency input attenuation as well as sine and assign output attenuation. All adjustments may be performed separately for each individual channel or for all channels simultaneously.

The Batumi II software has been rewritten from scratch to ensure best performance. The hardware has also been updated to allow for V/oct tracking and stable operation up to audio rates (more powerful CPU, precise, wideband converters, antialiased waveforms).

Notes: A visit to the Hainbach Studio Complex two years ago, led to a collaboration that would result in what is perhaps Joranalogue's finest design yet. United by a common passion for vintage test gear, the Joranalogue team joined forces with artist and YouTube sensation Hainbach.

Collide 4 builds upon on the lock-in amplifier concept, and brings it into the Eurorack world. These atomic age physics research instruments are known for their raw power when used in musical applications. Notes: Module A-124 is a special 12dB multimode filter using the "strange" filter circuit of the "EDP Wasp" (an analog synthesizer with black/yellow case built end of the seventies, manufactured by the UK company "Electronic Dream Plant" with Chris Huggett und Adrian Wagner). This design "abuses" digital inverters as analog operational amplifiers leading to distortions and other "dirty" effects that generate the specific sound of this filter. The filter is equipped with a band pass output and a combined low/notch/high pass output. For this output a control knob defines the relation between low and high pass signal. If both signals appear at the same level (i.e. middle position of the Mix knob) one obtains a notch filter. Otherwise the low or high pass signal predominates. The module does not feature self-oscillation in contrast to most of the other filters of the A-100 system.

The function and operation of this module is very similar to the module SEM VCF A-106-5. But the sound of both filters is very different! The only functional difference is the position of the sockets and controls, and the function of the controls CV2 (A-124: normal attenuator, A-106-5: polarizer).

The DATA is a digital platform for testing, measurement, and signal generation in Eurorack modular synthesis systems. It is a modular tool kit, with functions applicable to any system and style.

Use the DATA's scope to view the interactions between your control voltages and audio signals, allowing you to master your modules by understanding their voltage ranges, control shapes, and parameter responses. Use the DATA's dual waveform generator to dial in a precisely scaled LFO for CV control, or use the waveform's frequency "note mode" to effortlessly make dyads (two note chords). Use the DATA's clock program as a master clock or to divide or multiply an incoming clock signal, sending four different clock outs to gate modules directly or as control to sequencers.

The possibilities of the DATA are basically unlimited; with the included microSD you can update the DATA's firmware and we can continue to refine and create new programs.

The four handy knobs can act as active attenuators (unipolar) or attenuverters (bipolar) depending on the setting of the two-position switches above each one.

Each input is normalled to a precision +5V DC voltage source. With nothing plugged into the jacks, each knob controls a voltage range of 0 to +5 v or -5 to +5 v depending on the position of the mode switch.

Notes: Module A-130-2 is the slim version of module A-132-3 and offers essentially the same features. But the distances between the controls are smaller and rubberized small-sized knobs are used. The module is composed of two identical voltage controlled amplifiers (VCA). Each VCA has a manual gain control (also named Initial Gain) and a control voltage input with attenuator. The character of the control scale can be switched to linear or exponential. All inputs and outputs are DC coupled. Consequently the VCAs can be used to process both audio and control voltages (e.g. for voltage control of the level of LFO or envelope signals). The signal input has no attenuator available but is capable to process up to 16Vpp signals (i.e. -8V...+8V) without distortion. For the processing of higher levels an external attenuator (e.g. A-183-1) is recommended.

The amplification range is 0...1. Even with a higher external control voltage the amplification remains at 1 (kind of "amplification clipping" at 1).

- Gain: manual gain control (Initial Gain) in the range 0...1
- CV: attenuator for the CV input
- Lin/Exp: switches the VCA characteristic to linear or exponential, in center position the VCA is off (mute function)

The PrssPnt music synthesiser module is a controller in which several signals are generated by touching the printed copper wire at the bottom of the instrument. Touching PrssPnt, you become part of the circuit, generating a total of four simultaneous signals (two CV, two Gate).

The basic function of PrssPnt will be familiar to anyone who has used Pressure Points or 0-CTRL. It could be seen as a single "souped-up" channel of one of these devices. Since it is a single channel, the tuned voltage outputs are not relevant, and instead are replaced with more playable sensitivity controls and alternate pressure and gate outputs.

This stereo mixer comes with a built-in preamp that allows you to boost external instruments and microphones, making it a versatile tool for any modular setup. The 207t also features a six-channel mixer with a variety of signal routing options, including the ability to route channels to the monitor and L&R signal outputs, with per-channel control over loudness and panning.

Each channel has a Mon switch that sends the channel's signal to the monitor outputs, which are always full-volume and summed to mono, making it useful for basic monitoring applications or rudimentary mixing. The Prog switch sends the signal to the L&R signal outputs, with loudness controlled by the Level Adjustment slider and panning determined by the Channel Assignment knobs. On first blush, it appears to be a simple 8-stage sequencer - but there is far more functionality than first meets the eye:

There are two tracks (TRK 1 and TRK 2) that are variants of the single master pitch/gate sequencer, which is programmed via the PITCH sliders, PULSE COUNT and GATE TYPE switches. Each track interprets the master sequence in a variety of ways - creating complementary sequence variations that enable you to generate counterpoint, polyrhythms, and all manner of sonic movement (both subtle and extreme). Each of these tracks has its own playback ORDER, sequence LENgth, clock DIVision, SWING amount, SLIDE time, and track GATE lengths. Other track-based sequence variables are accessible from the TRACK MENU, and include Pitch Slider inversion; sequence note range; track transposition; and more. In addition, Tracks 1 & 2 both have multiple lanes of per-stage playback parameters, including: GATE override; PITCH override; RATCHet count; PROBability of playback; ACCUMulating transposition, and a dedicated CV lane. Each stage also has a SKIP feature, and a pitch SLIDE option.

8 separate and individual MODulation lanes are accessed via the MOD button. Each MOD lane has 8-stages of modulation values and its own playback ORDER, LENgth, and clock DIVision; and each lane is routable to one of Metropolix' two assignable outputs or to dozens of internal destinations, allowing for some sophisticated and powerful self-modulation.

A trio of AUX inputs allows for external modulation of user-assignable sequencer parameters for even greater variation, while two assignable CTRL knobs give you direct access to the parameters you want to adjust most frequently during a performance. With dedicated Pitch/Gate outputs for both Track 1 and Track 2; two totally user-assignable outputs (A and B); and internal MOD routing, Metropolix features a wealth of patching opportunities.

Metropolix also features a Loopy mode, allowing you to instantly play back short sub-sequences, or even "play" the stage buttons directly (like a 'keyboard').

Metropolix stores up to 64 preset configurations (in 8 banks of 8 presets), and all live settings are stored in EPROM, ensuring that your Metropolix will always power up exactly as you left it - even if you haven't saved them to a preset. By default presets can change all the structural (menu-based) elements of your sequencer without overwriting the front panel controls, but full recall is also available.

The operation of the Metropolix is optimized for live performance and jamming, with quick access to all the most important performance parameters, and the ability to greatly affect your sequences with a single slider or switch.

Sofia is a fully analogue voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) based on an original waveforming principle. It features a modern, well-calibrated, temperature compensated triangle core and two elaborate waveshaping and modulating sections. The sound is a mixture of a warm, saturated base tone and two ripple components. Besides its main output, Sofia offers access to individual components of the sound plus a multitude of modulation inputs allowing for extensive self-patching and animation of the waveform. To better understand the device, it is strongly advised to read through the entire manual before using the module.

Sofia implements and extends the classic computer music method for synthesis of formant sounds called FOF (fonction d'onde formantique), which uses a combination of simple, time-domain components (decaying sinusoidal waves) to achieve desired spectral characteristics.

In Sofia, two of such ripple elements are added on top of a slightly saturated sinusoidal base tone. Each new cycle of the base tone spawns a new pair of ripple elements. The ripples' density and decay rate may be adjusted over a wide range. Additionally, the elements may be warped so that their density accelerates or decelerates within the cycle. Finally, their basic waveform may be switched from sine-like to square-like for additional richness.

Despite the seemingly divergent frequencies present in the signal, it remains strictly harmonic due to how all elements are waveshaped from the core tone and therefore phase coherent. Thus, Sofia is not a complex oscillator in the Buchla sense; however, it goes beyond the traditional set of primary waves and wavetables, hence the name.

It boosts external signal to modular synth signal level.

With the Pico Input, line signals from, for example, a synthesizer, drum-computer, audio interface or smartphone can be raised to modular level. The module delivers up to 40 dB of gain. Thanks to its two channels, users can comfortably process mono as well as stereo material.

The Pico Input comes equipped with two signal paths. Each signal path features an audio input, a volume potentiometer and an output. Up to 40 dB of amplification are available. Using jumpers on the circuit board, it is possible to dampen the maximum gain to 20 dB. The module's first input is a stereo jack, meaning the user can connect a smartphone or tablet without any adapter cables. In this case, incoming signals are distributed internally to both channels.

Notes: Excellent value here. Analogue filterbanks tend to be pricy affairs but Erica's Resonant FB gives you all that creative control of dynamic equalisation with the convenience of digital control.

The Graphic Resonant Filterbank (FB) is a ten-band analogue filterbank with digital control over each bands' boost or cut.
