Review: Limited with hard to find and sought after rare and deleted tracks. DJ Shadow is a genius behind the boards. DJ Shadow is what we call a hip hop aficionado. He started out from very humble beginnings in Davis California and has risen to rip apart bland hip hop!! High Noon incorporates all that is hip hop.

Review: Another collaborative effort from the consistently fascinating US ambient kings Past Inside The President, this time with Hendrix - not that one - and Wayne Robert Thomas, whose atmospheric guitar-led work has featured several times on the label before. If the average ambient album has its head in the clouds, this is more grounding, more gamboling in the fields perhaps than floating in the ether, with gentle flute and guitar giving the walls of synth sounds some perspective. That said, the closing track of the four, 'Retract R (Type K)', sizzles away like something by Growing or even Spaceman 3 left to fry in the sun. Magnificent stuff..

Review: Following on from last year's overdue reissue of hardcore mob SSD's 1982 debut full-length The Kids Will Have Ther Say, Trust Records keep the heat coming with an equally long awaited repress of what many fans regard to be the band's finest hour (or 11 minutes). Released the following year in 1983 and marking their first recorded output with the addition of secondary guitarist Francois Levesque, the Get It Away EP would serve as the vital stepping stone in transitioning from their frenetic thrashcore beginnings to an eventual all-out thrash metal juggernaut, with the sonic fulcrum deftly balanced for these seven chaotic cuts, including a frenzied reimagining of 'No Reply' by Buzzcocks. Available on vinyl and cassette for the first time in over four decades.

Review: Almanacs's new cassette for Mystery Circles finds the artist leaning heavily on the sounds of the indigenous music of his own Honduran culture. As well as that there are direct samples of punta and marimba music and its unique rhythmic structures, but all reworked through his own specific lens - a mix of minimalist, experimental and ambient music. It's an enchanting and escapist listen packed with real world detail. Even the title references that culture, as it is inspired by a speech from Berta Caceres, an indigenous and environmental activist who in 2016, was murdered by the government.

Review: G.Teixeira is an artist based in France and someone with a multi-faceted sound. His Almost Silent alias now turns out Undisclosed Fields Vol.1, a first release on Healing Sound Propagandist that takes the form of eight movements and six reworks. It's as dense as ambient gets, frankly, with heartbreaking melodies passing by and disappearing before your ears. Fizzing synth drones are layered up over crepuscular chords and the whole thing has you gazing off into the distance, your eyes glazing over as you happily get absorbed in the subtly shifting sounds, tones and timbres. This, then, is another high class album from both artist and label.

Review: ASC returns with a deeply emotive album on Past Inside the Present, showcasing a new chapter in his musical journey. Known for his versatility across electronic and drum & bass genres, James Clements channels introspection and healing in Loss. Quiet bird calls and field recordings intertwine with ASC's expertly crafted synths, creating a therapeutic sonic landscape. Each track evokes a range of emotions, from melancholy to hope, acceptance to sorrow. Loss invites listeners to embark on a poignant journey, where ASC's mastery shines through in every moment. It's a captivating and beautiful testament to the power of music as a form of self-expression and healing.

Review: Ambient Etudes For Bass Guitar & Pedalboard is a new album from James Bernard that collates a number of his ambient sketches and improvisations that the artist has made in the last 12 months. The music was made in three different locations and with three different bass guitars, and each time in a live setting, in one take, all captured using the sound-on-sound looping method with a single instrument and a pedalboard. The whole thing is coated in lo-fi fuzz and real-world dust and has a circular nature that means you're always going somewhere but never find out where. It's a perfectly soothing tonic for calming busy minds.

Review: Bicep's second album is shaped by the experience of touring their debut long player for something like three years, a period during which they honed and perfected their instinct for tracks that would stand the test of time and repeated listening. What develops is a distinctive style typified by a combination of ethereal sonics and cheeky, memorable instrumental hooks, only set to a variety of beats that reference and indeed fuse the plethora of different dance genres that have sprung up since the acid house revolution if the mid-80s. So we get everything from the electro-tainted 'X' to 'Rever', where an African choir floats over a subtle deep house shuffle and 'Saku', where UKG bass pressure and skippy beats provide a hypnotic background for Clara La San's sweet but ghostly voice.

Review: Using a variety of tape stocks, Black Swan creates a haunting atmosphere that evokes the sensation of uncovering long-lost, sacred recordings hidden in time on his ninth album, Ghost. The New York-based artist reveals that he was inspired by musique concrete and ambient while making the record, which is made up of 20 pieces that all form a continuous suite. Each track varies in length and complexity from short and sweet sketches to more elongated studies and that are made from intense layering and harmonic surges using an array of tape stocks. The result is a haunting, unearthly atmosphere that sounds perfect in this cassette format.

Review: Brock Van Wey hails from the Bay Area but his BVDUB project is known worldwide. It sees the American provide a near-constant stream of innovative ambient music on the Past Inside The Present label - this new double album comes just a couple of months after his last one, Fumika Fades, but is essential once more. There are plenty of intense and heavily textured tracks as well as more empty and escapist pieces with heavenly melodies and subtle vocals worked into to dreamy effect. As always he serves up the album in various formats and this is the double cassette version which lends itself to the lo-fi aesthetic perfectly.

Review: Clouds Without Water is a project that came about after the chance meeting of two ambient experimentalists. They were both in attendance to perform at the same electronic music festival but came together over their shared love of Bristol Sound. Working over long distances and through the isolation of the pandemic, they sent tracks to each other "without plans or discussion, only wordless questions buried in the music." What resulted was this album, which evokes celestial dreams, moon-lit otherworldly landscapes and plenty of deep introspection. It is space music for spacing out to.

Review: The debut studio album from East Coast hip-hop group De La Soul, 3 Feet High & Rising, initially released in 1989 by Tommy Boy Records, returns to record store shelves thanks to Chrysalis. The first of three collaborations with the producer Prince Paul, the album contains the iconic singles 'Me Myself and I', 'The Magic Number', 'Buddy', and 'Eye Know', and is widely considered one of the greatest rap albums of all time. Veering masterfully between a playful, comic register, whilst still deeply engaged in late 80s US politics, particularly concerning the African American experience, this truly is an album that does it all. A real cornerstone for any hip-hop lover's record collection.

Here the label presents a mixtape-style collection featuring live recordings from London's Notting Hill Carnival, spanning 1984 to 1988. Originally aired on NTS Radio in August 2018, this release marks a milestone in their 10th-anniversary series and it now comes on cassette. Highlights include sounds from renowned systems like Jamdown Rockers, Saxon, Java Nuclear Power, Killerwatt Turbotronic, Stereograph, Sir Coxsone, and Volcano Express. The audio, meticulously curated by the Who Cork The Dance crew, features contributions from Jayman, Ruff House, Keimo, Omar, Gee Wizz and Jah Humble.

This one is a specialty album that has a great mixture of breaks, beats and is one of the rarest released Shadow's LP's to grace the vinyl medium. Review: US-based Mystery Circles is the next stop for Hiroshi EBINA following a previous outing here last year. This new cassette is another beautifully organic ambient soundscape with delicate pads and a sense of quiet hope and atomism. The beauty of the album cover really portrays the majesty of the music within as gentle chords linger in the air above warm and fuzzy drones. Some pieces are more empty that others which only lends the appearance of a wispy pad all the more weight while some grow in stubby intensity as sounds are layered up and draw you in ever deeper.

He has served up similar here before alongside the likes of boss man zake and this time goes deeper than ever into slowly shifting soundscapes that are pregnant with emotion, grey in scale but with a real sense of melancholic beauty. Review: As if The Exploited's iconic debut album needs any introduction, 'Punks Not Dead', served less as a title and more of a rallying cry and reactionary throat-punch to those who looked down their noses at the scene, regarding it as a flash in the pan movement. Establishing the Oi-punk attitude as an essential component, delving into anti-establishment and anti-army topics, as well as laying the groundwork for a plethora of vital acts to come, if ever there was a list of quintessential, integral punk records, this would reside atop of the scuzzy mountain.

He's dropped ambient gems on the likes of Past Inside The Present and Modern Obscure but here serves up a superb cassette on Mystery Circles. Across eight pieces he concurs up a range of feelings from rose-tinted nostalgia on the beautifully tender opener 'The Light We Lost' to more uplifting feels on 'A Pile Of Thoughts' (feat Fu_k The Zeitgeist). 'Organism' has delicate vocal whispers from Patricia Wolf that make it all the more heavenly and a second appearance feature from Fu_k The Zeitgeist on 'Primal' is another standout.

Review: Hypnotism I is a new album from Foundation that the artist himself says has been a cherished part of his work since shortly after his previous work Mountain Ambient IV. We're told that its creation was a slow, immersive process that unfolded over months, with each layer evolving patiently. By composing intuitively, the album emerged naturally to reflect a glacial depth and subconscious growth. Its four pieces are all richly layered soundscapes with wispy melodies and dusty drones that sink you in deep and free your mind of all woes.

It's a superb showcase of the talents on their roster and includes a collection of music made by Italian composer Sofia degli Alessandri-Hultquist aka Drum & Lace between 2016 and 2019. There is also an album by London-based Will Bolton which finds the "beauty in ruins, decay and the details and textures of everyday scenes" and an album from People Galan and David Cordero which saw the pair send sound fragments back and forth over the internet and develop them until they both liked what they heard. It all adds up to a brilliant snapshot of some of ambient's best current practitioners.

Review: The Doober, the latest release in the Music for Saxofone and Bass Guitar series by jazz duo Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes, offers a unique take on covers from artists like Joni Mitchell, Judee Sill, and Sheryl Crow. Recorded live, the album captures the spontaneity of their performances, highlighting Gendel's vibrant saxophone and Wilkes' energetic basslines. Eschewing traditional renditions, the duo emphasizes textural exploration, transforming tracks like 'Rugged Road' and 'The Circle Game' into playful, experimental pieces. They started by sharing textural washes and snippets of melody with one another and then as the comms progressed they decided to work on a proper album as "audio penpals". Each track was written and finished before the next one was started and was then used as inspiration going forwards. It lends these lush ambient sounds a real sense of narrative.

Helsen's sound works on a grand (electronically) orchestral scale at times, the proverbial cathedrals of sound coming to mind, at others (see 'Duniskwalgunyi') understated and intimate. On first listen, it's the simpler moments like 'Whisper At A Party' that grab you, but the 17 track selection slowly reveals itself to be quite special on repeated rotations.

It's a thrilling, pacey listen that whisks you off your feet and through a world of juke, footwork and ghetto beats that are all drenched in soul. Review: Diners Club International recently served up this Hi Tech album, Detwat, on CD, but now backs that up with a limited cassette version featuring some bonus cuts. It originally got released on Omar S's FHXE label and is a sleazy and high-speed ghetto workout with filthy low ends aimed well and truly at the rump. Juke, footwork and plenty of spin-off styles are all chewed up and spat out with plenty of top collars and guests adding colour. There are pumping beats and fractured vocals on 'Money Phone', Drake style trap vocoders on 'TakeOffOnnaPorsche' and bright, reflective, optimistic chords over hurried beats on 'Glitch N Ass' (feat Cheapskate Skutta, Dastardly Kids) amongst many more highlights.

Review: With Heilun, Hyldipi makes a stunning debut on ambient powerhouse Past Inside The Present by presenting seven meditative compositions shaped by his native Iceland's raw, introspective beauty. Crafted entirely with guitar and minimal hardware, each track feels like a gentle conversation with nature, ephemeral and soul-soothing. From the delicate strums of 'Opnun' to the deep serenity of 'Hvild,' the album flows like glacial melt, patient and healing. 'Fadmur' blooms with aching emotion, while 'Kyrrd' closes the journey in subaquatic calm. This is ambient music for deep listening-an improvised, transcendental escape into stillness, where the ego dissolves and all that remains is presence and peace.

Review: The Number of the Beast was Iron Maiden's third studio album. It came and made a huge impact in 1982 and that original version is the source for this 40th anniversary edition. It comes on cassette tape for extra nostalgic value and the chart topping tunes still carry plenty of weight today. One of them is their first UK top ten single, 'Run to the Hills,' which impressively managed to hit number 7 in the first week of March in 1982. Notably, it was also the first album form the rockers to have Bruce Dickinson on vocals.

Review: Is there another artist around with such a singular vision as Jay Glass Dubs? While there's more than likely to be a few, it's certainly true that the Bokeh Versions regular has an opaque, mind-altering trademark ambient dub sound noticeably different from his peers. It's at the heart of his latest release, a short-run cassette for The Tapeworm that effectively applies his trippy "sound soup" style to the DJ mix. The two 20-minute tracks are not mixes in a traditional sense, but rather drifting, effects-laden collages featuring samples and snippets from not only his recordings, but also those from a wide range of obscure and well-known artists from across the musical spectrum, making for wonderful horizontal listening.

Review: Vital US ambient label Past Inside The Present welcomes Washington, D.C-based composer T.R. Jordan for a debut album that is focussed on the evolution "of personal relationships and the paths they take." The artist has formerly performed as The Greatest Hoax and here delves deep into contemporary classical and ambient music with a lo-fi feel and real sense of longing. The pads unfold slowly in gentle arcs, static drifts across the arrangements and muffled guitars peak through bleak clouds like little rays of hope. It is a work of subtle art and devastating emotionality.

Review: Dwell Time II is the second part of a three-part project on Past Inside The Present from T.R. Jordan. Each of the albums was made using the same material in the same time frame, and they are all part of one overarching and coherent suite that he refers to as "musical composting." This is the cassette tape version and it is full of grainy, fluttering howls, soft warbling pads, pastoral references like flowing streams and mossy rocks and plenty of grand spatial elegance that harks back to the likes of Hiroshi Yoshimura and early Brian Eno experiments. Another immersive offering from this fine label, then.

Review: Kilometre Club lands on the Indianapolis label Healing Sound Propagandist with a collection of sounds made using only one piece of gear, the Squier Bass VI, with the assistance of guitar pedals. Each one is a pure and cathartic meditation on minimalist drones that are deft and wispy. The compositions are smartly layered up and slowly ascend to the heavens with subtle spaces between notes and long tails making their mark on your heat. Says the artist, "this is an album for floating away while calling out vowels in reverse alphabetical order" - and we love it.

His meticulous curation for FMR showcases top-tier sound collages and experimental electronic music and that dedication shines in Lia Kohl and Daniel Wyche's latest release, 'Movie Candy. It's a captivating exploration of free-spirited electronic music that seamlessly blends cello, guitar, synths, voice, field recordings, and electronic treatments into a record that brims with both nostalgia and innovation. Wyche describes it as an homage to the obscure ephemera of films-like the allure of candy wrappers and the mesmerising cinema carpets-forging vivid memories that linger and evolve through time.

Review: Freed from the usually harsh time constraints imposed on the band as a result of 2020's COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, Korn found themselves happily chipping away at a sound they'd always spearheaded on 'Requiem', albeit with much more freedom and time on their hands. Full of nu-metal pine and telephoned-in emo vocal drawls, this latest from the band contains more sprawling arrangements and experimentations in recording to analog tape. Don't think this is Korn going retro, though: it might as well be called nu-nu-metal, it sounds so fresh!

Review: Ambient composer and improviser Tom Leclerc shares a series of moments with WILD in which the pair experiment and go off grid in their search for immersive ambient sounds. All of the session for this album on Giraffe Tape sharpened in the same day with a stripped back studio set up featuring minimalist synths and pedals. Both artist's own restive sounds meet in a new world where distant cosmic winds gently blow over pastural chord sequences. There is subtle movement in these tracks, some of which are darker and heavier than others which have more light, hope and joy.

Review: Austria band Lehnen embarks on something of a new beginning here as they unveil a new four-track work, Negative Space: Gradients, which comes on cassette via Past Inside The Present. This project was initially thought of as a four-song experiment and one that continues where the last album left off. That is to say with lots of lush synth layers and ambient textures of its parent album but all turned up a notch. It will still be familiar to fans but while the last album Negative Space funnelled post hardcore and post rock energy, this one joins things together and the result is a work full of healing compositions full of hope.

Review: Having debuted in mid-2021 with a cassette-only mini-album, the admirable but hard-to-find Sell, mysterious, Atlanta-based ambient outfit The Lifted Index delivers its debut album proper on Past Inside The Present. Described by its creators as "a mediation on our interconnected world", Hosts of Living Form was reportedly inspired by a combination of the life cycle of plant life (in their words, "death, decay, decomposition, growth"). Musically, it's a quietly picturesque affair in which ambient electronics, crackling aural textures, effects-laden pianos and the Duratti Column style guitar sounds ebb and flow to create fluid, organic soundscapes. It's all quietly impressive, but at its finest - such as on 'In Stones & Trees, The Bones of Things', and the lilting 'Eluvium Repose' - the album is genuinely breath-taking.

Review: After the shocking news of frontman Chester Bennington's untimely passing in 2017, many presumed it to be the sudden yet apparent bookend for nu-metal turned alt-rock megastars Linkin Park. Following a definitive greatest hits collection featuring the last known remnants of material recorded with their original vocalist, it's now clear that compilation served more as closure to the band's original era rather than the initially perceived farewell most fans ascertained. Returning with Dead Sara vocalist Emily Armstrong as well as new drummer Colin Brittain (following the departure of founding member Rob Bourdain), From Zero marks the eighth full-length from the group and first since 2017's divisive, pop-oriented One More Light. Taking its title from their original moniker of Xero, the material seeks to find a fulcrum between the band's more aggressive nu-metal beginnings and the latter-day electronic pop-rock formula, whilst sonically bearing familiarity to the musical entity fans have stood by for multiple decades yet altering the playing field to complement their vastly different new vocalist.

Review:  South London's Loefah has long been a pivotal figure in the UK's underground evolution, particularly on the bossier end of the spectrum. The cut figure is a master in the club too and this recording from the iconic Bloc Weekender in 2011 proves that as it now gets pressed up to a brand new cassette from the Never Sleep charity tape series. It showcases UK club futurism by blending hybrid transatlantic sounds with vibrant MC SP. Featuring soon-to-be Swamp81 classics, the set fuses Miami-style bass, hip-hop elements and UK hardcore into the darker, more melody-driven side of 2011 sounds. All proceeds benefit Lives Not Knives who support youth projects in South London.

Review: Returning with his redemption attempt follow up to 2020's We Are Chaos, industrial metal shock-rock provocateur Marilyn Manson seeks to skirt the numerous controversies and accusations accrued in the last few years with his most potent musical statement in decades. Signing with Nuclear Blast and enlisting the likes of Chelsea Wolfe collaborator/producer Tyler Bates to helm the project, his 12th full-length One Assassination Under God: Chapter 1 (indicating that more is sure to follow), offers up some of the heaviest and introspective material of his career to date, with cuts such as 'Nod If You Understand' harking back to the unhinged angst of Antichrist Superstar, whereas 'As Sick As The Secrets Within' breathes with the same mercurial synth-gloom as the strongest moments on Mechanical Animals. A cynical attempt to regain fan adoration, or the sound of a tortured artist finally coming to terms with his own demons and attempting to rediscover former glory and prowess, the interpretation is entirely your own to consider.

Pathways is his newest album and is another signature blend of deep techno, dub, and ambient sounds that explore fresh ground. This one comes on cassette - a fitting medium for his always hazy, lo-fi sounds, and opens with a gorgeous stargazer loosely tethered to a dreamy groove. 'Movement' is just much of a cosmic floater, 'Accident' has static electricity fizzing about an underwater chamber and 'Through' is a slow-motion dubscape. 'Exodus' and 'Calm' close out this beautifully unhurried exploration of the deep.

Review: Russian titan Monokle is back to once again traverse many different sound worlds with his new album Ultraflowers. It is one of a number of superb albums landing on Constellation Tatsu this summer and one defined again by its warmth. The title track is a lo-fi, scruffy and deep opener with persuasive breakbeats, while 'Glassy Eyed' is an ambient jungle trip that drips with watery melody. 'Night Objects' offers some introspection and 'Moths' is a glitchy future techno cut with smeared synth soul. '1000Work' layer sup more breaks with elegant ambient melodies and 'Predteche' casts you admit in the deepest corners of space.

For her part, Mulhearn harnesses the power of fire and ice, sunshine and torrential rain in tracks that are occasionally gentle and sometimes harsh. The textures are fuzzy and grainy but synths and strings bring light and hope. Kim Rueger's Belly Full of Stars alias finds her going deep into subterranean worlds of cavernous sound detailed with the finest of wispy melodies on' Ebon Flow' while 'Perihelia' has a more organic and summery feel desire being so pressurised and tense. These are enchanting sounds for sure.

Kokubo's traditional Japanese instrumentation defines the work as it sweeps you up and transports you to someone that is serene and introspective. Across four pieces here they do just that - each one unhurried and vast in sci, with delicate keys tinkling above yawning chords and spring day energies on 'Thousand Bells 1'. The second piece is a little warmer, with synth smears and distant breezes bring in all manner of elegant percussive sounds. Side two continues the exploration of the Far Eastern countryside on a sunny day in mesmerising and soothing fashion.

It is a complete coming together of these two revered Detroit musical talents following a string of great singles with one another since 2019. As you can expect, the grooves are dusty, complex and rooted in house but with plenty of influences from soul, funk and jazz. The vocals from Rose are as smooth as you like and take the form of soulful streams of consciousness. Utterly vital.

Review: It is almost a decade since the last album from Placebo but finally fans get what they have been waiting for after so long, a nine studio long player from the perrenial indie favs. The album was written after main man Brain Molko found out his neighbours were dying on him and it set him off on a path of wonder about how our privacy has been eroded in the digital age. The record therefore tells a true to life story through a paranoid lens and displays a complete disgust from modern life. A narrator features throughout to heighten the concept and it makes for a big return to the fray.
