Review: On Rosal, Luna Maria Cedron gently brings together the complex influences and facets of her existence, in a complex interweaving of Latin musicalities, ranging from Occitan lyrics, flamenco, and popular Venezuelan ballad styles. Using these structures as a starting point, Cedron gradually moves into an increasingly electronic palette, deploying everything from reggaeton to hybrid abstraction - this begins in a relatively limited fashion in the form of a drum machine backing up a slow flamenco song ('Rosal'), before gradating into more hard-driven bops towards the latter half. As if to convey an increasing defiance, the LP's uptick in trajectory matches the increasing theme of upset at its heart and a railing against the status quo.

Review: The good folks at Compost have put together a second volume of their Future Sounds of Kraut compilation and once again it is packed with exciting new takes on the age-old genres. Compiler Fred Und Luna features a couple of times including with the celestial synth charms and light electronic rhythms of 'Monotonikum' and elsewhere tried and tested talents such as Thomas Fehlmann with his widescreen cinematic cut' 'Permanent Touch' and minimal favourite Roman Flugel with his delightfully melodic and innocent 'Rules' bring plenty of class the adventurous and accomplished double album. There is plenty to get stuck into here for those who like their sounds sleek, atmospheric and star gazing.

The many facets of Frith's musical oeuvre shimmer in vibrant and unique colors, but stand as one rainbow monolith of musical creation, never disintegrating into esoteric eclecticism. Review: Canadian post-hardcore art-punk collective, Fucked Up, have been releasing projects at a ludicrously prolific rate ever since their 2001 inception, yet even by their own standards, they've gone majorly overboard in the past few years. Following on from 2021's epic Year Of The Horse EP and the 2022 follow up Oberon EP; named after the king of fairies from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, 2023 saw the release of their sixth full-length One Day (with all member's individual parts recorded under a strict 24-hour time limit) while 2024 birthed two sequels in the form of Another Day and Someday (both recorded with the same mantra). Their eighth album overall, with a promise to take a much-deserved hiatus following release, from the opening squall of 'City Boy', the band's reliable concoction of proggy, art-rock inspired chaotic hardcore is unleashed with allusions to Greek tragedy and even a chorus-like back and forth between the vocals and lyrics, conjuring the type of poetic, epic, theatrical spectacle not traditionally standard for the punk scene. In Fucked Up terms however, it makes perfect sense.

Review: Norwich is much more than the butt of Alan Partridge jokes it appears. Having turned their back on London and relocated to the East Anglian city, the three-piece - Joe Barton, Mickey Donnelly and Louie Rice - set up a rehearsal studio and recording space in a former brutalist shopping centre and sound like they've found inspiration. Venturing into recording with the dazzling sense of experimentation that we associate with the experimental rock scenes in Germany and France in the late 60s, they've come out gleaming. This is a highly contemporary stretching of what a band built around drums, bass, and synth with deliberately abstract vocals can do. On 'Judas Gap' they tear up the rule book and let the hiss of analog tape provide atmosphere. The bass guitar sound would likely give engineers at Abbey Road nightmares, but it's sort of the point: it's an irreverent counterpoint to pop music and there's beauty in recording things how they sound without masking it. 'Misprint Maker' is a fever dream, intense and unsettling but thrilling at the same time. 'Gipping' has what sounds like a cow as an intro. It's absurd but feels like The KLF would be proud. They played their first gig at Cafe Oto in Dalston and immediately found a label to release this album - it's no wonder they were snapped up as they're truly fascinating in their approach.

Review: Beth Gibbons releases her debut solo album Lives Outgrown. Notably containing ten songs that were in total written over the course of ten years, the overarching mood is one of saying farewell and musing on the bittersweetness of loss. The English singer and notable Portishead member's solo efforts often operate with this affect, but Gibbons' latest is of special import, given the length of time over which these songs were crafted and occasionally performed over the years. Review: Alabama post-rock trio Glories share An Expanse Of Colour, a medially lowercase and lo-fi cruncher that nonetheless still delivers effectively sublime washes of wordless extremophile rock feeling. Recorded between 2020 and 2023, we find it no wonder that these compositions took years, as they resound like hefty undertakings for a collection of tracks allegedly born of the threesome's respective basements. Dedicated to the memory of their friend, a mood of loss and finality is also, as is often the case with Glories, present throughout, with 'Sad As The Fog standing out especially as the glacial dirge descendent upon said wake.

They were signed to Fiction records (home to The Cure) and released two astounding albums of dark and industrial-sounding alternative rock. This is the second and final album from the San Diego/London band, whose history has been blighted by grief. Shortly after completing this album, their bassist Jimmy Fernandez suddenly died from a brain hemorrhage, brining an abrupt, unexpected and tragic end to the band. However, their legacy lives on thanks to the power of the music they've left behind. Highlights from this staggering album include 'Tremolo Song', which has a punishing, dark, swaggering, Stone Temple Pilots-esque feel. It's pretty much impossible not to get very, very excited about the prospect of a new Godspeed record. The outfit pretty much wrote the book on huge, epic, fantastical chamber rock with a punk edge when they first set about trying to soundtrack the decline of Western civilisation back in the late-1990s, and following reformation circa 2010 have only felt more relevant.
State's End! is a fitting addition to a back catalogue almost-entirely comprising landmark records, and while very much in the same vein as the band's previous, it's also original enough to confirm the group are still as incomparable as ever (albeit some have noted this album takes them one-step closer to a latter day Pink Floyd). Soaring, rousing, tense instrumental rock that also packs a vital message - the world needs to change tact before all is too late - it's likely this will be one of the year's most essential releases.

Review: Anches En Maat is the first new album from Grails in over a half-decade - following the masterful Chalice Hymnal in 2017 - and their first album recorded with all members in the studio together since Doomsdayer's Holiday in 2008. A strange mixture of 1980s softcore, daytime soap opera lounge and nods to musique concrete make this the group's most challenging full-length project yet, with the likes of 'Black Rain' and 'Sad & Illegal' seeming to toe the lines of everything from lost cinematic soul to elemental prog, with the spectre of film seeming to haunt its every lilt and impact.

His own output or that of the label he runs, Blue Chopsticks. Whatever reference rings truest, the American composer, guitarist, pianist and vocalist is an enigma responsible for a broad back catalogue of credits, projects, experiments and other. Whistle From Above lands in February 2025 and immediately proves Grubbs' continued genius and refusal to sit still. According to the limited information we have, he began developing these new guitar pieces - best described as somewhere between Fender drone, ambient noise, and musique concrete - following "months of shutdown woodshedding" in which he became "reinvigorated". Review: Habitat Ensemble is a new musical collective that is led by musician Marius Houschyar and this is their self titled debut album on the delightful Music From Memory. The group has roots in the south of the Czech Republic where, we're told, outsiders and creatives have been meeting at a summer school since the 1990s. It was in the summer of 2022 that this group came together, inspired by the idea of exchanging the down cultural and musical ideas through music. What they cook up is unashamedly experimental outsider works that collide mad mixing desk trickery, Perry's trademark vocal mutterings and plenty of occult sound designs. Melodies are smeared and smudged, rhythms are drunk and off balance and moods range from balmy to bonkers, often within the same damn track. A maverick collage, for sure.

Review: Originally formed in 2000 in Middletown, Connecticut, the duo of Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga, better known as Have A Nice Life are one of the earliest instances of a truly internet-based underground band. Using primitive platforms to easily distribute early material, by the time their opus Deathconsciousness arrived in 2008, they had already amassed a devout following which was amplified by the debut album's crushing marrying of distorted, harsh shoegazing, blackened atmospherics, nauseating drone and industrial post-punk. Avid fans would begin to track down sporadic demo versions and outtakes from the record spread out across the digital landscape and compile the cuts onto an unofficial bootleg titled Voids, which would later be released on limited cassette with the pair's blessing. Courtesy of The Flenser, and following last year's remastered streaming release, Voids finally comes home to vinyl with its first official pressing over a full decade on from inception, and expands the original compilation to include alternative, raw, lo-fi, otherworldly renditions of material from their two subsequent LPs The Unnatural World and Sea Of Worry.

Review: It's been a busy time for Hawksmoor, with the critically acclaimed Telepathic Heights album arriving last year and a re-release of the stunning Saturnalia landing on Library of the Occult earlier in 2024. Now we have a brand new studio collection waiting to be explored, and it's every bit the record fans will have been hoping for given the track record here. Owing plenty to seminal German electronic acts such as Cluster, Neu!, Michael Rother, Can, and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, there's also plenty here rooted in more melodic synth schools of music alongside the ambient work of Brian Eno and more. The result is something that sounds at once modern and old, timeless yet out of time. A work of extraordinary talent and just a little bit of genius, we'd say it has been worth the wait but the remarkable thing here is just how prolific Hawksmoor seem to be.

Review: Ever since Los Angeles noise-rock trio HEALTH provided the score to Rockstar Games' Max Payne 3, both their sonic and career paths have veered down a direction that avid early fans still have trouble reconciling. Shifting from predominantly instrumental, spasmodic chaos to a unique form of laser-focused, industrial metalwave; their 2019 opus Vol 4: Slaves Of Fear newly established them as the ultimate electronic act for metal fans. While lockdown led to the Disco 4 collaborative albums, split into two separate volumes and boasting a remarkably dynamic array of features from the likes of alt hip-hop guru JPEGMAFIA, trap-metal phenom Ghostemane, hyperpop absurdist duo 100 Gecs, industrial overlords Nine Inch Nails and even groove metal legends Lamb Of God, their fifth full-length Rat Wars draws on the insidious influence from these more aggressive collaborators while simultaneously offering some of their most vulnerable, melancholic and fragile material to date. Complete with a Godflesh sample, it's rather fitting when considering HEALTH's attempts to marry such disparate yet equally punishing sonics mirrors Justin Broadrick's forays from decades ago. Grinding, mechanical percussion fuses to ethereal, androgynous vocals all drowned within EBM sickliness, whilst unpacking utterly nihilistic worldviews. Imagine Placebo or The Pet Shop Boys writing an album with Ministry, and you may start to have an idea of the war you're heading into...

Review: LA based industrial trio HEALTH have had quite the curious trajectory from their confrontational noise-rock beginnings, to providing the acclaimed score to Max Payne 3, all the way to redefining themselves as a gritty, synth-metal behemoth on 2019's Vol 4: Slaves Of Fear. Review: The difficult second. Apparently not for composer and producer David Jospeh. Once again delving into the latter work of Mark Hollis with and without Talk Talk for jumping off points and inspiration, this time the lead artist drafts the muse's son, Charlie Hollis, to play piano on no less than four tracks, alongside band veterans Robbie Macintosh, Laurence Pendrous, Andy Panayi, Martin Ditcham and Simon Edwards. Listing all the other musicians who have contributed here would be a long task, so let's cut to the chase. This is lush stuff, which incorporates but never obsesses over elements of jazz, post rock, ambient and soundscape. It's vast and also notably intimate, like finding the perfect spot of seclusion and shade under a beautiful tree while gazing out over endless horizons.

Review: Talk about appropriate names. There's something about Helen Island that sounds as though it has been cast adrift, washed up, and left to establish its own thing. The Parisian enigma's work feels ghostly, haunted by a past that has vanished into the ocean mist. Whether they'll ever be reunited is the real question, but mystery is the joy here. Whether it's at the uptempo, synth pop hued 'Hot Zone Regular Day', or the weird and wonderful psyche-electronica-field style 'Forever Starts Today', breathy samples on 'Indivisibl' or the innocent contemporary classical-cum-ambient plucked strings and keys of 'Restless Lovers' and 'Gore Lore', the whole thing is a strange and beguiling ride through the outer reaches of popular music.

Review: Hankerers after 90s band musicians turned Y2K solo electronica artists will water at the mouth at the first play of this one. Her Space Holiday was the first-time solo alias of Marc Bianchi, the American indietronic musician known for his membership of the bands Indian Summer and Calm. Turning his hand to solo soundcraft at the turn of the millennium, and releasing under Skylab and Tiger Style - the latter of which saw to the release of the first edition of this record, albeit with a different sleeve design - Bianchi's solo output would echo the post-hardcore humours that characterised his group work, except for the fact that it would also somewhat electronify them into contrition, resulting in every logical conclusion from lasery broadcast neofolk ('Snakecharmer') to anxiolytic hyperballad emo ('Through The Eyes Of A Child').
