Review: Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, the mysterious steel pan outfit from Hamburg, have amassed a cult following around the globe. With a slew of classic 7"s and three critically acclaimed full length albums, they set a high bar for themselves, one which they clearly intend on pushing to even higher heights with this new offering. On their fourth album BRSB, Bacao return with more of the same, but more of the same with them is of course inherently different. Covering songs that span genres, and range from mega-hits to underground album cuts, they make them their own with their unique approach to the traditional steel pans of Trinidad and Tobago. While part of the allure of a new Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band album is finding out what covers they choose, it is equally intriguing to see what original tunes they've cooked up alongside these, and this record is foul of standout originals. from 'In The Crosshairs' to 'Grilled' to 'Treasure Quest'.

Review: Ghost Box founder Jim Jupp returns with a new album from his flagship project, Belbury Poly, and this time around he's doing things a bit differently. Compared to the usual winsome minimal synth soliloquies, he's recruited a full band to round out his sound on The Path. As a result, this isn't like any other Belbury Poly record to date, even if past collaborator Christopher Budd returns on bass and guitar. Elsewhere, Midlake's Jesse Chandler lends some flute, clarinet and key tones, Max Saidi holds down the drums and Justin Hopper offers his narration to the record. Striking on a slinky, library-meets-lounge style without losing that hauntological charm, it's a bold new direction for Belbury Poly.

Review: Chicago artist Justin Kay was hugely prolific in his day and world under several different nom de plume. Now some of his best work is being revisited for a series of posthumous releases. He traversed several different sound worlds with equal aplomb from bright pop to sludge metal via IDM. Under his Cosmic AC alias he manages to mix up equal parts ambient bliss with breakbeat action, raw techno and emotive house. The standouts of this Continuations album come thick and fast from the high speed jungle breaks of 'Blue Whirl' to the jazzy downtempo delights of 'Hedge Clipper' and plenty in between. See also the majestic pop serenity of closer 'WTWIRDYMTBOWSA.'

It comes on the band's home label of First World and bares plenty of their signature sonic hallmarks - dusty, undercooked production, lazy hip hop beats, and gorgeous vocals that sit somewhere between neo soul, golden era boom-bap from Tribe and something else a little unique. Review: A-grade record collector and accomplished DJ Degiheugi has toured with DJ Shadow, dropped plenty of great albums and is a master of smart sampling. Some of his earlier albums are in the process of being reissued at the moment and Aquilon is one of them. It has been remastered for the occasion and cut to translucent blue vinyl 17 years after it first arrived in 2005. It's a worldly mix of downtempo beats and hip-hop grooves with plenty of colour and vibrancy. Some cuts are all about the body-popping beats and others are real late-night mood-setters.

Review: Over his long and illustrious career, Dennis 'Dego' McFarlane has made music in many complimentary styles, but it's been broken beat with which he's been associated with for the least two decades. Alongside his friend and regular studio partner Kaidi Tatham, he's developed a particular strain of "bruk" that incorporates elements of jazz, electrofunk, soul, boogie, jazz-funk and, more occasionally, hip-hop. It's this fluid, attractive, synth-heavy sound that's at the heart of The Negative Positive, his first solo full-length for two years. It's as well-made, soulful, slick and musically rich as you'd expect, with a series of stellar vocal numbers joining a swathe of similarly impressive instrumentals.

Review: Kabala Records label head Manuel Kabala is back on his own imprint with a new record that leads you into intriguing alternative dimensions. It follows on from his well-received debut Polaris as he further explores spirit, mind, jazz, blues, frenzied rhythm and electric invention. Review: Kid Sundance was last on our favourite Munich-based breakbeat label Ilian Tape in 2022 when he dropped the superb Tien Seconden record. Now he returns and once again the SP1200 is at the heart of what he does on this entry into the Ilian Beat Tape series. It's a magnificent selection of 13 tracks that are variously lo-fi and frazzled, super soulful and stoned, and blissed out and jazzy. Each one hooks you in for different reasons and the whole thing makes for a nice listen overall as well as offering up plenty of heat for hard-working DJs who like whipping through short but sweet joints.

Review: Zoltan Nagy AKA P60 has spent the last four years slowly building up his Midnight Fashion label and its dedicated downtempo offshoot, Midnight Fashion Chill.
