Black Debtors (4:48)
Collaboration Of Doom (COD) (2:43)
Review: 26 year old Lagos trumpeter, composer and bandleader Etuk Ubong builds the heat for his forthcoming album Miracles with two incendiary shots of raw contemporary Nigerian funk. Fiery protest tracks amplified by pace and energy, "Black Debtors" is almost militant in its drive and fury before spiralling into a sensational jazz solo from Ubong himself. "Collaboration Of Doom" ups the chaos tenfold with whirling organs, wild time signatures and psychedelic layers of horns that build and build as the momentum increases. Gutsy raw funk.

Kibe Kibe (3:10)
Mama Matotoya (3:32)
Review: Destination Mombasa Reef Hotel, 1970s. The prestigious resort had a fittingly unique in-house band in the form of The Mombasa Vikings. Casting afrofunk and benga spells with raw energy, they were invited to Switzerland to record their only album African Songs, home to both of these stunning sun-kissed fusions. "Kibe Kibe" is a powerful bluesy jam with full effort from the horns and backing vocals. Meanwhile on the B "Mama Matotoya" gets heavy on the hammond with exultant results. Fully licenced from all original Viking members, Afro7 have smashed this one out of the park. Kibe up!

Do The Smasher (2:26)
Love You Didn't Want (2:34)
Review: Afro7 Records once again come through with a bit of new funk for fans of labels like Mukatsuku. Tanya Ria is a newcomer on paper, but if "Do The Smasher" is anything to go by, we can safely regard her as being a total pro - funkiness and vibrations running knee deep on this heavy floor destroyer. The flip of this 7" is a little more soulful thanks to the wailing vocals on "Love You Didn't Want", but we're still very much in GET DOWN territory here...

Mashena (3:07)
Samha (3:00)
Review: Hot in the slipstream of last year's self-titled debut album comes two brand new adventures from the London-based Sudan-exiled troupe. Both cuts recorded in Abbey Road Studios, both led and characterised by singer Regia Ishag's breath taking vocals; "Mashena" packs a vibrant punch with triumphant horns and insistent, urgent vocal repetition while "Samha" is a much deeper blues piece where Regia's Sudanese vocals take on a rhythmic pattern of their own over a dreamy, star-gazing setting.

Devil Go

Devil Go (3:40)
Jesu Kristo (4:33)
Review: While he lived a musical life that spanned from boogie to gospel before he passed away in 2016, Nairobi's David Waciuma didn't get to record much. He was known much more for his live performances with bands such as The Monks Experience then, later, Rapture Voices who he recorded these two records in the mid-70s. "Devil Go" is a thumping rhythm and blues call and response piece while "Jesu Kristo" hits with more of a frazzled bluesy funk. Both make you wish he recorded much more.
