Review: On Curve 1, Mura Masa takes a detour from pop-infused collaborations and returns to his roots with a record steeped in the spirit of club culture. Released on his own Pond Recordings, this fourth album is a statement of independence, reflecting both a shift in direction and a rejection of the narrative-heavy, hyper-commercialised approach that has often surrounded modern music releases. Curve 1 is enigmatic, playful, and ambiguousidesigned to resonate in both solitary listening sessions and the intensity of packed, sweat-drenched dancefloors. Mura Masa describes the album as a manifestation of a personal philosophy: to ignore the noise of the attention economy and focus on what truly matters. In this light, Curve 1 becomes more than an albumiit's an invitation for listeners to strip away preconceptions and find their own meaning within its layers. Tracks bounce between euphoric highs and introspective moments, leaving plenty of space for tension and release. With the launch of his own label and creative space in Peckham, Mura Masa continues to position himself at the heart of youth culture, pushing boundaries and fostering new talent. Curve 1 marks the beginning of this new chapter, full of possibilities and free from convention.

Review: Yumi Murata's Uterus Uterus is a jazz-pop classic from 1985. Yumi is a vocal coach and former singer who was active from the late 70s and through the 80s before opening her own Murata Yumi Vocal Training Room in 1991 and teaching ever since. This long-player was a later one out of the seven she released in all and is one of her most popular as it mixes up fusion, new wave, funk, pop and jazz across synth sounds. These are enjoyable and sophisticated sounds from this talented vocalist.

Review: The makings of Murcof's new album Twin Colour were first germinated in 2020, shaped by the early days of the pandemic lockdowns. The first volume in a new multidisciplinary project between Fernando Corona (Murcof), his daughter Alina Corona, and his colleague Simon Geilfus, Twin Colour is born of less conception and more studio heuristics, though it draws many of its inspirations from some of the 80s material that Murcof had laid down at the start of his career. As such, an impressive combo of tape-hissed coldwave and modern, progressive ambient is heard here, straying from Murcof's trickier material for something much more roughshod, tawny and dramatic.

Review: The Murder Capital sit at the forefront of a new wave of indie that's sprung up out of the Dublin scene after Gilla Band smashed the door down. The band are no longer Dublin-based, but spread out across Ireland, London and Berlin. They grouped together, though, for the recording of their third album in LA, steered by wise Grammy-winning producer John Congleton. The album has this frenetic sensibility running through it and it's what makes them such a powerhouse live act. 'The Fall' is guttural, raw, widescreen and teeming with ambition; 'Words Lost Meaning' is dirtier and wouldn't be amiss in The Kills' set with its sulky, fuzz-laden bass riff offering plenty of swagger. While 'Can't Pretend To Know' is more Nine Inch Nails with noisy tremolo picking on the guitar offering a grandiose backdrop for the charismatic lead vocal. They've leant into their mainstream aspirations here and sound ready to take on the world.

Review: The Irish music scene has rarely been in such rude and varied health. From Galway to Dublin in the South, up to Belfast and Derry in the North, Great Britain's smaller and - arguably - greener little sibling is making a lot of interesting noises right now. Each seems to be as captivating as the next, although few tear out of the starting blocks with anything like the intensity and energy, anger and tumultuous emotion as The Murder Capital. Blindness is album number three, following on from a debut that hit number two in the Irish charts and 18 in the UK, and a second - Gigi's Recovery - that achieved the number one spot in the group's homeland and 16 in the UK. We'd be shocked if part tres didn't do better. Always immediate and packed with personality, we finally hear the culmination of those preceding years. From post punk chug distorted through the fizz and crackle of humanity, though quieter moments deliver even more devastating blows, shades of everyone from The Killers (at their creative peak) to The Watchmen, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Savages and Idles ring crystal clear.

Review: Renowned DJ and selector MURO is a Jedi-level compiler and this new collection of his delves into Victor's extensive archives to spotlight a world of Japanese jazz, fusion and AOR. It take sin plenty of internationally known names like Yasuko Agawa on the sunset sounds of 'L.A. Night', Sadistics who offers the more psyched out guitar leans of 'On the Seashore', Yuji Ohno's neo-Balaeric bliss-out 'The Dawn of Seychells' and Hiroshi Fukumura's soul soothing Ry Ayres-style melodies on 'White Clouds.' These are luxurious sounds and timeless tracks with MURO's signature funky perspective making this a brillaint choice for brighter, warmer days.

Review: The legendary DJ Muro is behind this superb new P-Vine compilation, Diggin Groove Diggers: Best Of Tribe. Muro is a truly a-grade digger and one of his homeland of Japan's most famous. Here he collates together some of his favourite songs from Tribe, a rather legendary spiritual jazz collective from the Motor City. This music has been revered for more than 50 years and now for the first time gets put together on one album that is both a perfect primer for newbies and a great collection for those long-time fans.

Review: Fourth Wave's latest compilation feels like a musical postcard from Japan's vibrant underground, gliding through genres with effortless charm. Mari Nakamoto's 'Day Dreaming' sets a tranquil mood with her airy vocals drifting over soft, dreamy instrumentals. Yudai Suzuki's 'Midnight Calling' brings smoky sax riffs and laid-back grooves, perfect for late-night introspection. Yasuhiro Abe's 'Night Fish' dives into psychedelic waters, swirling with hypnotic melodies and unpredictable rhythms. Maki Asakawa's 'Kohi Hitotsu' radiates raw emotion, her voice rich with longing. Yuji Ozeki's 'Futaribun No Yume' blends traditional Japanese sounds with modern electronics, crafting a sound both timeless and futuristic. Jin Kirigaya's 'Matenro Monogatari' closes the collection with cinematic depth, its sweeping arrangement lingering long after the final note.

Review: Martha Skye Murphy's debut album Um is a groundbreaking blend of baroque beauty and electronic noise, creating a tapestry of sound that is both organic and artificial, hi-fi and lo-fi. Collaborations with artists like Claire Rousay and Roy Montgomery add depth to the album, which is the result of rigorous studio sessions with producer Ethan P. Flynn. Murphy's lyrics are evocative, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, from Ancient Roman torture to Fred and Ginger tap routines, creating a sense of longing and distant memory throughout the record. With its dreamy appeal and compelling vocal performances, Um is a stunning debut that displays Murphy's talent admirably.

Review: London DJ Paul Murphy has been entertaining jazz dancers since the late 1970s and is rightly cited by Gilles Peterson (amongst others) as a major influence. Here he offers up a taste of the up-tempo dancefloor jazz he's been championing for the last four decades via a fine compilation named after his once regular club night, Jazz Room. There's plenty of Latin jazz and fusion present (see Art Pepper's "Mambo de la Pinta", Lucas Van Merwijk's "4Beat Cha Cha Cha" and Terje Terasmaa's "Yatra-Ta") as well as African-influenced workouts (see the cuts by Rhythmagic Orchestra and Mamelon), the odd classic (Art Ensemble of Chicago) and a handful of more recent cuts, including an inspired jazz cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Blue Mode.

To finish off the campaign, they've decided to offer up this compilation of rare demo tracks, remixes and radio edits. There's plenty to enjoy across the set, with our highlights including the goth-goes-indie-dance goodness of 'Final Solution (Club Mix 2)', the mid-80s Bowie-esque 'I've Got a Miniature Camera', the ambient pop masterpiece that is 'Jemal (Version 2)' and spine-tingling acapella cut 'Cool Cool Breeze'.

Review: Former Moloko singer Roisin Murphy proves with this new album she is still a force to be reckoned with. It bristles with dance floor kinetics and fizzing electronic synths that come laden with her outsider pop vocals. Roisin Machine is a collaboration with Sheffield producer Richard Barratt and the results include tracks that touch on feelings of frustration and romance, modern Britain and plenty more besides, all with plenty of his rugged production, bit also plenty of super sweet rolling grooves and funky bass riffs. The hip-swinging 'Murphy's Law' is a particular highlight from, this perennially underrated artist.

Review: Roisin Murphy's new album is getting plenty of deserving spotlight from Ninja Tune who have served it up on several different formats, all of which are available from Juno. Whatever ti might sound like from the title, this new album from the disco queen is not a retrospective but an all new work. The tunes have been produced by the masterful DJ Koze, the leftfield Pampa Records boss. It crosses many genre divides with plenty of sing-along choruses, thoughtful lyrics and musical hooks aplenty presented in vivid colour. Recent singles 'Cuckoo' and 'The Universe' are big ones already and many more follow here.

Review: Back in 2020, Roisin Murphy restated her claim as one of the best vocalists in electronic music with her hugely successful and critically acclaimed LP Roisin Machine. A year on, after it sold out everywhere, it gets a special reissue treatment by Skint Records for National Album Day 2021 on limited, gold-splattered vinyl. The album was praised far and wide with multiple album of the year nominations, a ton of five star reviews and standout performances of the lead single on Graham Norton. Do not sleep on your chance to catch this limited edition reissue before it's gone again.

Review: Roisin Murphy seems to be getting more prolific with age. It's less than a year since the release of the critically acclaimed off-pop thriller Hairless Toys, and the Irish artist and former Moloko singer is ready to release the follow-up. Where its predecessor was bold, brassy and cheery, Take Her Up To Monto is an altogether more atmospheric affair, arguably closer in feel to her work with Moloko during the late '90s and early 2000s. Musically intriguing and largely downtempo in tone, it sees Murphy taking her left-of-centre take on pop in eccentric and evocative new directions. Even the album's most obviously upbeat moments - such as the cheery "Romantic Comedy" - feature musical backdrops that bristle with leftfield ideas and fuzzy, off-kilter electronics.

Review: Roisin Murphy has finally become a genuine top-tier star - an artist capable of packing-out venues with dynamic live shows, and whose every new musical move is headline news. Hit Parade is not, as the title suggests, a solo retrospective but rather a brand-new album produced not by regular collaborator Crooked Man, but rather another masterful maverick, DJ Koze. The pair has worked together before, so Murphy is in safe hands. Musically, it's a genre-straddling, style-bending affair whose strong songs - rich in sing-along choruses, thoughtful lyrics and musical hooks aplenty - are presented in vivid colour (with plenty of sparkling organic instrumentation). Recent singles 'Cuckoo' and 'The Universe', both instant classics, offer a neat summary of the album's many qualities.

Review: It may have taken longer than some anticipated, but Roisin Murphy is finally getting the plaudits she serves as one of the UK's finest vocalists and most inventive artists. It's taken time but finally the accolades are coming along with the of packed-out venues, dynamic live shows, and superb new albums. Hit Parade is a brand-new record made not with regular producer Crooked Man, but the leftfield Pampa Records boss DJ Koze. Review: Ignore the title of this one because despite what it may sound like, this new album from Roisin Murphy is not in fact a look back at her greatest hits, even though there have been many. Instead it's a new collection of new tunes produced by the masterful DJ Koze. The pair has worked together before, so Murphy is in safe hands. Review: A number of the many great full lengths penned by alternative pop star Roisin Murphy are currently being reissued and here we have Take Her Up To Monto!, a bold and adventurous exploration of electronic pop from 2016. It is another one that showcases Murphy's fearless creativity and boundary-pushing approach to music where distinct vocals, coupled with innovative production, create a dynamic and immersive listen. There is an infectious energy to 'Mastermind' and dreamy allure to 'Ten Miles High,' amongst a wide mix of influences from other genres and experimental soundscapes that confirmed once more than Murphy' is a true visionary.

Review: The second album by Murphy's Law, the amusingly entitled Back With A Bong, was originally released in 1989 and is a pivotal work in the New York Hardcore scene. Founded in Astoria, Queens in 1983, Murphy's Law played a crucial role in shaping the sound and ethos of the city's hardcore scene not least with their early albums in the '80s which were instrumental in defining the genre. They have remained dedicated to their hardcore roots and fans throughout their career and lead singer Jimmy G has consistently stayed true to the scene, which has earned the band a place as one of NYHC's all-time favourites. This reissue of their greatest album only confirms that.

Review: David Murray is a prolific American jazz musician. His particular skills lay in tenor saxophone and bass clarinet and he has recorded several well thought of albums. In fact, he has over 200 LPs as a leader and countless more as a sideman under his belt so is a true musical legend. In 2020, Mr. Mandel celebrated Murray's work with 'Murray Mondays' on Instagram Live and when Murray returned to New York in 2021, he recorded a solo tenor saxophone and bass clarinet session at Reservoir Studio. The result was exceptional, leading to this double LP which now gets reissued.
